Set/Unique Item Worshippers Tournament II

SUWorshipper has defeated Andariel, and made it to act 2. Found my second S/U item in the Catacombs. Then, naturally, Andariel dropped me bupkus, on players 5. And, it wasn't exactly the easiest fight with Andy, either. Kind of dicey, and got nothing out of it to boot.

Bob is berating me for my lack of postings. He has made remarkable progress this week, and informs me that if I don't tell you all about it, no one will bask in his glory. :badteeth: This was enough to guilt me into posting.

"Let me 'splain...No, there is too much...let me sum up"

Bob has Mutilated Mephisto, Devestated Diablo, and is getting ready to Assassinate the Ancients.

Like several of you, I am using a Act 3 Cold merc now, named Ajheed. He kicks some serious rear. The only place I have slowed down at all is in the tunnel areas in act 5, since most of the mobs have inherent cold resistance. Other than that, its just a matter of freezing them in place while my posse mows them down. That's right, my posse. Bob runs with 3 wolves, 3 ravens, a spirit and a vine, not to mention Ajheed. He has a screenful.

Luck of the draw opened up my summoning tree early on, and so I built on that. Most skills in all 3 trees have at least one point in them now, however, which means none of them have very many. So Bob relies on Ajheed for killing power a lot. I spend a lot of time recasting my ravens, vine and spirit, but the wolves only die to lightning that I've noticed. They are tough.

Current gear is:
Headgear: Isenhart's Horns
Amulet: Tancred's Weird (gambled, strangely enough)
Weapon1: Culwen's Point (got this from the chest at the end of Infernal Pit)
Weapon2: Isenhart's Lightbrand (+ another in storage)
Armor: Isenhart's Case
Belt: Arctic Binding
Ring1: Nagelring
Ring2: Angelic Halo
Boots: Hsaru's Iron Heel

Ajheed's Gear:
Headgear: Duskdeep
Weapon: Angelic Sickle
Armor: Angelic Mantle
Shield: Hsaru's Iron Fist

This brings my total equipped to a respectable 13, lacking only gloves and 2 shields. In the meantime, I have made up a Ancient's Pledge shield, bringing all my resists to max in Normal.

I have just 5 points in elemental so far, all random; 11 in shapeshifting, also all random; and 25 in summoning, 11 of them at my discretion. I still have 7 points left over, trying to decide what I need. Thinking about upping my oak sage a bit. Oh, and the Culwen's Point gives me +1 to all, which helps a lot.

The only time I ran into any trouble was on Diablo. I cleared the room on /players8, and intended to change to /players3 for Diablo....intended is the key word here. This fight was incredibly drawn out. I went back to town for mana pots about 20 times so I could keep casting wolves to keep him tied up while Ajheed beat him down. I bet it took 45 minutes. Not what I had intended at all. And once again, I was rewarded with Rares...

So far, Bob has not found a single S/U from an act boss. Not One!! That has to be some kind of record. Granted, he only has about 40% magic find, but still...

Oh, and last thing before calling it a night tonight, Bob and Ajheel went up against Nihlathak. Refresh my memory if you will...When did they change his AI so he can run all around the entire level?? I always used to just clear until I found him and then kill him there. I cleared the first hall, no luck...found him in the second hall. He proceeded to teleport away continuously, passing through the middle area and into the only other hall I had cleared *whew*. Fortunately he died here and I didn't have to take on uncleared halls while chasing him around. I'll remember that for next time.

Up next: Ancient's Way! The waypoint in the Frozen Tundra was right outside the entrance, which I took as a good sign to stop there.

Surprisingly good stats for such a lowly dagger. ITD is excellent for speeding up your kills.

I'd recommend that, for you and your pets. It hakes a huge difference in the tankability of your wolves. They'll regen life much faster.

Don't forget the Angelic set bonus. For Act Boss kills, equip your Mantle/Sickle/Ring for 50% MF. Another ring = 50% more MF. If you find the amulet, you'll get the additional 40% MF full set bonus.
Another MF possibility: If you find another piece of Tancred's, the amulet set bonus is 78% MF.

I've seen that, only once though...
It was frustrating!

Melica: "Whoever that Berserker was, a pox on him and his stupid Headgear!"

Yep, our outfits had now been "completed", on the second level of NM Sewers.

Radament went down easily enough (a Resist Posion Shrine helped with that) but now I faced a major dilemma: Stuck at -8% lightning resist, there are now lots of beetles and possibly lightning mages coming up this act. Stony Tomb is just around the corner, and it can have stairs traps with both of the above critters! Of course, I could skip the Tomb for later, but that doesn't really solve the problem. Besides, nasty LE bosses can wait anywhere.

I did what I felt I had to do. I used the Radament skill point to get Fade, then I went back to Normal Larzuk to get a socket. I didn´t have a PTopaz at the time, so the best lightning resist option (such a gem in a shield) wasn´t available. I decided that Hawkmail was the item most likely to stay on for a long time. Melica's main strength is her mobility, so CBF has top priority. I put an Ort in Hawkmail. With Steelclash held and Fade on, lightning resist was now 41%. Much better.

I still played with great care, and it paid off. No real trouble over the next areas (admittedly, Stony Tomb had no stairs trap to speak of). Geshef is just excellent against resurrectors. I faced the Retuned in a doorway, and brought down a couple of Meteors, while Geshef handled the freezing. When it was clear, I just charged in, cast CoS, brought down a few Meteors on the Hollow One while Geshef froze him. Piece of cake.

Two cool finds in Halls of the Dead:
* Arcanna's Sign. This (for some strange reason) very hard-to-find amulet was a grail item for me. I prefer Civerb's ammy for now but Arcanna's has MF potential.
* Sazabi's Mental Sheath. +1 All Skills and...resists! Excellent. Unfortunately, Melica has to gain another level before she is strong enough to wear it.

Melica's Primary Gear:
Milabrega's Diadem
Civerb's Icon
Bloodrise (or Death's Touch, depending on my mood)
Hawkmail 'Ort'
Milabrega's Orb
Death's Hand
Nagelring (25)
Hwanin's Blessing
Nagelring (28)
Infernostride

Weapon switch (I switch to this in tough situations):
Spineripper
Steelclash

Geshef, level 55 Cold Iron Wolf
Sazabi's Mental Sheath
Angelic Sickle (Storage only, I want it available in case I find other Angelic items)
Rockfleece
Milabrega's Orb

I really want to find a Sol (or Amn) rune so I can upgrade Bloodrise. :prop:

Wow! Hooray! An update.

So, finally having found the time to play, I've managed to leave the only empty places in act 2 to be half of the false tombs, and the true tomb. Nyx has reached level 27, and is having very little difficulty. It takes a while to whittle things down on P8, but once I get to act 3 and can offload one of my weapons, I'll be speedy again.

No new S/U were found in those dungeons. I was sure Kaa's tomb would have one, as it was gigantic, and was really where I had to stop playing before I went crazy. :)

Nyx, Level 27 Assassin, 5 S/U equipped, Next Area: More False Tombs! Yay!

Got through some more areas without much trouble. I have learned to reduce the danger quite a bit lately. Waiting for the right moments to move in (and move out!) helps a lot.

Melica's rune luck has been horrible. Her highest runes up to NM Claw Viper Temple has been Amn x1 and Thul x2, which is really bad considering I have been on /p8 the whole way. Imagine my surprise when a friggin' LEM rune drops in there! I didn´t even know they can drop this early.

Lum or Pul would have been better but Lem is used in the recipe for upgrading exceptional unique armor so it may be used later. Hmm, a Steelclash Monarch does not look bad at all (base blocking would be 72% for an assassin!; although it does have a steep STR requirement:tongue: ).

Allow me to introduce Destroyer Bob!

Bob has finished Act 5 without any serious problems. I did have to turn the player setting down for the Ancient Tunnels since I didn't want to be there all night. And also for Lister and Baal. At the settings I chose, everything went smoothly, if not always quickly.

I took Insane Wayne's excellent suggestion about the Angelic set and am now sporting 91% MF. Even so, Baal was kind enough to drop me 5 magical items and a gem. That makes 5/5 for the bosses so far. Actually, I didn't find any additional S/U all evening. None, Zip, Nada. Bah, I say. Bah!!

The one good find I did come across was a Sol rune in WSK2 from one of the teleporting guys. I thought about upgrading my Culwen's Point to help with cold resistant/immune killing, but the strength & dex requirements are a bit out of reach right now. Guess I know where my points are going for a few levels. Nice find on that Lem rune, by the way, jiansonz!

The False Tombs: Part Two, or how I learned to stop loving normal items and pick up the unique.

So, the only thing left for Nyx to do is clear the True Tomb and take out the big bug. I'll be glad to get out of the act, I've about had my fill of undead.

There's been a relative lack of items this Act.... until now. The Sparkly Chest in the next-to-final Tomb coughed up the Axe of Fechmar and the Skewer of Kirintz, which means I have to get an Act 3 merc immediately since I have three one-handed swords.

The next tomb was equally as kind, giving an Umbral Disk and a Manald Heal. I've got all my sword/shield slots filled for right now, and will only lack a single shield come Act 3. This is much earlier than I'd have liked. Now to get a good weapon, I'll have to do some upgrading.

And, amid the flourishing fields of S/U, Nyx hit level 28, getting a second rolled point into Cobra Strike.

Duriel is next, and I have a feeling he'll be greedy.

Nyx, Level 28, 7 S/U equipped, Next Area: Duriel!

Don's resting on his laurels after reaching the City of the Damned WP, with another Level and Unique item under his belt (not lieterally), not to mention a couple of fancy shmancy skill points via the Izual quest. Don's string of finding unique items from innocuous looking containers continued, putting him at 3, as a swift kick to the face of some Trapped Souls revealed a second unique ring, another Nagel, albeit a much better one (73/21 compared to the 55/16 he was already wearing). Off came a rare ring that added 22 to mana and 2% mana leech (in addition to some other mods), and down when Don's mana, faster and faster, but them's the breaks. Level 32's point was wastefully spent in Polearm Mastery, but Don used his quest points in a much better fashion: 1 into each of Battle Command and Find Item, the latter on which I decided to gamble with, considering Don's currently mostly wasted ~120% MF and the fields of corpses he either converts into potions or leaves behind.

Progress report and a Question

RiverSue is at the Inner Cloister WP. She has just found her second shield, Stormguild. Up until this point, she was still using a unique Rogue's Bow, but with the shield she can now wield two one-handed melee weapons. Wonderful.

She decided to change mercs. She hired a cold rogue merc and gave her the Rogue's bow. That seemed appropriate. The Act 2 merc was trying his best with the Razortine, but he was dying or chewing up potions whenever the going got the least bit tough. At least the bowyer will stay back a ways and let the Valkarie do her thing.

Question: When I get my next shield, I can increase my S/U holding by hiring an Act 3 merc. Am I allowed to go back to Normal difficulty act 3 to hire a merc or must I wait until NM Act 3???

RiverSue is still trying to find a ring and an amulet to get her full complement of twelve items.

Gibsu has been through the desert and smacked down Duriel. A few interesting finds along the way:
  • Arctic Mitts gives us nice resists when combined with the two other set pieces, so it replaced Sander’s Taboo. I could equip the Horn for the full set, but it’s not worth it.
  • A Nagelring, even with only 16% MF is still more useful than my dual Cathan's Seals, so it stays. I also found Cathan’s Sigil, but the partial set bonuses aren’t great IMO and I’m not likely to equip a third from that set.
  • Best of all was Aldur’s Rhythm. So far it pwns compared to Bloodrise, and I’ve used two of its three sockets for fire (28%) and lightning (28%) resist jewels.
Still no shields, though.

Andy dropped me a Crushflange unique mace, which made me grimace. I'm hoping for something uber-neat like tarn or torch of iro soon before I have to move my wand or totem. I also rolled another point into Amp Damage. Whoo ha.

Thanks! I found a Cleglaw's Claw in Catacombs level 3 just before going down to face Andariel. Andariel was not easy on P8, but the Valkarie (about the 20th recast) killed her with a little help from RiverSue and Civerb's Cudgel (a very little help).

Now I will go back to normal Act 3 and get that merc that I have been hoping to get for some time. They are not that much different from the cold NM Rogue merc, but I prefer them (besides, it allows me to increase my S/U count by one!).

Oh, Andariel dropped essentially nothing at all. Meaning that she dropped an Isenheart's Case and a Gnasher hand axe. I thought that my crushflange was pretty weak, but the Gnasher is even worse. At least Crushflange has some crushing blow.

Edit after getting the Normal Act 3 Merc:
RiverSue's S/U Equipment

Weapon 2 Crushflange Mace
Shield 2 Stormguild Large Shield

Devak's S/U Equipment

So far, I have found a total of 28 S/U items. As the above list shows, they are not very good ones. My 42 magic find is part of the problem, my luck accounts for the rest.

SUWorshipper has completed the Viper Temple, and is waiting to enter the Palace. A chest in the Lost City dropped a Shadowfang Two Handed Sword, which my assassin needed like a hole in the head. That made me have to ditch my two claw setup, as I had the shield on my weapon switch.

Not sure, but it seems only 3 S/Us at this point is pretty darned low. Well, Andariel dropping none helped. The MF's been around 40ish, for quite some time, and is creeping upward.

And now, Nyx has left the sunny desert for the muggy, muggy swamp.

Duriel's True Tomb was huge. Very huge. I'm VERY happy to be done with lightning beetles and resurrecting undead for a while. It's not difficult, as any decently equipped Merc can dominate the whole act (and often does!). He certainly earned his keep this act for me, and I'll be sad to fire him, though. I did get a lot of mileage out of an Act 3 merc last tournament, though, and I think that having him actually level up with me will be handy.

In breaking with tradition, Duriel actually coughed up a set item among his drops. I was exceptionally disappointed when I saw the words 'Bone Wand' glowing green at me.

Then I paused and thought for a moment.

"Wait. This could be good. 20% Fast Cast? Nah. +enhanced damage? Maybe. Mana Steal? Eh. +25 Mana? But I have no traps!

....wait. What's this? +25-75 cold damage? Alright! Rock ON!".

It's a reliable source of heavy, shattering cold damage. On top of what my cold merc will do. I've also got the three lowest 1-handed swords to fall back on. Rixot's for bosses, Crescent for things I want to poison, Skewer for Ranged baddies I want to blind...

Life, as they say, is good. Tomorrow will start with the acquisition of a Cold Mage, and much chaos with the wand. Maybe I'll even find my beloved Bloodrise....

SuJez the Paladin has begun his quest and has been gifted with 2 Sets/Uniques, and he's only just finished rescuing Cain. His first find was the trusty Pelta Lunata, from a casket in the Mausolem. It was then followed up by the Inferno Cranium, dropped in the cave level 2, by a dark stalker type monster. The skill rolls have been decent, with quite a number of points into sacrifice, which has been a great skill for clearing hard monsters quickly, with a level 1 holy fire as the aura. I have not yet used any of my free skill points.
