OT: What is it about books?

Ok, so I know for a fact that I'm not the only bookworm in the SPF :loving:

So I want to know, what is it about books that captures your mind? What makes you love reading so much? And who is your favourite author?

For me it's two things;

a) I love to learn new words, and just generally improve my language skills.

b) I love the ability to delve into the stories and adventures of a book. It's like the world stops existing, I'm just living in a different world where I have no cares or worries!

Favourite Author: David Eddings

Re: OT: What is it about books?

Books can be immersive and a form of escapism!

Helps improve my own creativity which is something I struggle with. I tend to think of something and then realise it is a direct derivative of something I saw/read/heard >_<.

I also agree with your 2 points.

I also like Eddings, George RR Martin, Kathy Reichs, Will Adams and many others.

Re: OT: What is it about books?

+1 to choice b. Books just take you away to another place. A good author can make me forget where I am and what I was supposed to be doing. I really like Nelson Demille and Wilbur Smith for cheap paperbook "trash" books that are quite amazing.

I'm a history geek, so I really get into biographies and auto biographies. The River of Doubt by Candace Millard is a fantastic book about Theodore Roosevelt's expedition in South America that I would highly recommend to any fellow history dweebs.

Re: OT: What is it about books?

Yeah I like Wilbur Smith too as they are nice and short usually, which makes a nice change of pace from the other end of the spectrum which is huge series like ASOIAF and most of Eddings' work. I like Robyn Young too - I'm readng her Brethren Trilogy right now.

Re: OT: What is it about books?

For me, its the release from this world when you get a good book. You just want to read. No matter what. I started reading Eddings when my first was born and i was happy to do the night feeds so I could stay up and read........just slept at work instead..

Eddings is great so is Gail Z Martin realy good books. Currently reading Jack Whyte books about the Crusdaes/Templars. Only just started but really got me. Coffee went cold this afternoon reading

Re: OT: What is it about books?

Ken Follett is also quite good.

Robyn Young was well timed as her books are to do with the Crusades and I had just had the urge to play Age of Empires 2 which had some nice tie-ins.

Re: OT: What is it about books?

I come from a family of book lovers. When we moved to this house ten years ago we had more the 3000 books and we've added at least another thousand since then. Eddings is my favourite author too, but I also read a variety scifi/fantasy/horror authors. I tend to read a lot of non-fiction as well. I have a fairly large collection is old science textbooks. I've been a nerd, or is that is geek, for a very long time.

To give a twist to this thread, it has to be a physical book too. I find reading from a computer screen or a Kobo-thingy very difficult.

Re: OT: What is it about books?

Kindles are just wrong, the papery feel is part of a reading experience for me.
Do you guys find you read books over and over? I read one called 'The Gargoyle', a very clever book, and I read it 5 times in a month

Also, Tess Gerritsen is another good author. She does sort of investigative, although my main interest is fantasy! :loving:

Re: OT: What is it about books?

I concur, it must be a physical book, I love the feeling and it is not a strain to read. Also I like not having to worry about battery and I can flip back and forth much easier if I am looking at a map or whatever.

Re: OT: What is it about books?

Has anyone actually answered the question?

It's the same thing with boxes.
