Low Level Random Tournament, Round 2

Sorry to post a quest so soon after my last post but please explain to me what forum time is. The times I see on the forum are in my local time zone GMT+10 so I don't know when we are allowed to start.

US EDT is GMT -5

I get to get in on this one! not just hear about it! I got 2 ('sin that'll be new) & used one of my rerolls to get 3-Claw Mastery.

OK, this sounds interesting, I´ll join. I feel a need to mix up the TWD tourney with something quicker and less serious. It will be interesting to see how far the characters will go.

Since I can´t bring myself to NOT do full clears, I´ll go with /players 1 all the way (except in areas with act bosses). Not so much for the points (as an obsessive full-clearer, I´m not particularly fond of the scoring system  ) but to keep the game quicker and (hopefully) less dangerous.

A question: what about the first waypoint in each act? Do we get to count that one on the scoring sheet? Thus, do we all start with 99 points?

My participant will be a Paladin named Mort and his first three points will go into: Sacrifice.

No rerolls used.

The town waypoints do not give any points.

Also, clearing everything and gaining a few levels is not necessarily a bad thing. Yes, you get more points for doing things at a lower level, but later things count for more points, and if you survive farther than others, even if you get less points earlier on, your total may come out much higher. Check the score sheet from the original tournament and you'll see how things turned out.

I don't think a couple points early on is going to make you lose if full clears mean you make it further than the other participants. I believe AE noted something to this effect in the first thread (which contains some interesting (if not quite as applicable this time around) advice).

I rolled a 1, so I'll play a Zon named Xerious (not quite serious ;) )
Then rolled another 1, so I start with Jab

Deja vu... exactly the same start as last time  But with the rule changes I should have a chance to develop some javalin skills.

I played last time at P8, hoping for better gear drops. This worked pretty well, but I'm going to tone it down this time to go a bit faster through the quests.

i'm getting a bit bored of sc so i'll give this a try.

rolled a druid with poison creeper, no rerolls needed

Thanks to AlterEgo for the responses, and I did miss #14. :-)

I might think about playing, but if I may ask one more question....

I have never done a tournament before, and I might have questions during the tournament, care to help newbies get used to the idea so we are doing it correctly?

I probably will play for kicks, but it will take a bit of helping to explain to my wife how it works (why I need to know first to be able to explain to her). She plays for an hour or two daily, but I am hoping her last outing with hardcore hasn't spoiled her to bad where she won't try it again. I think it is a neat idea for a tournament. Totally random and you don't know what you will be training.

Should I (and my wife Tundra if she is interested) decide to play, do we just start now and report here our progress per the rules on the first post? I will re-read the rules again to get another grasp of how it is played.

EDIT: Just read the rules again, you can roll for your character now (and first skill?) but the tourney doesn't start until 10/15/2004.

goltar25,

"Also, an example of how the random skill selection works. Let's say you are a Necromancer, starting out. Your initial skill table would be something like this:

1-Amplify Damage
2-Teeth
3-Bone Armor
4-Raise Skeleton
"

I have never seen a Necromancer skill sheet, so don't really know the skill trees. I just now looked at the few characters I have built and funny thing is; I only now figured out that maybe all characters get 10 skills per tab? Don't laugh, I never paid attention to that before.

But using your example, I still don't know how to random the skills. Can you explain using a barb, sorc, amazon; as I have played them and at least can view their trees locally here to understand.

Who knows if my or my wife will get a barb, but for example's sake, I thought it would be a good one to explain. The barb has like 6 skills for weapons. I am hoping that someone who rolled a barb wouldn't have to randomize all 6 weapon masteries, but I don't know.

There are 3 tabs for each character, there are 10 skills in each tab; and only some skills can be used as you approach the level needed to use them. I am not quite understanding. So before the tournament begins, can you go a little more in depth or shed some light to the last tournament so I can review how it was played?

How the skills are determined is by looking at all three of your skill tabs. Any skill that you can put a point into at that time based on your level, prerequisite skills, and maxed skills, is assigned a number.

All of the skill tabs for every class, along with details of each skill, can be found on either Arreat Summit or purediablo.com.

As an example, a level 1 Barbarian has these skills available: Howl, Find Potion, Sword Mastery, Axe Mastery, Mace Mastery, and Bash. So if you get a Barbarian, you would assign a number to each of these skills, like this:

1-Howl
2-Find Potion
3-Sword Mastery
4-Axe Mastery
5-Mace Mastery
6-Bash

You don't necessarily have to have this order, but some way to differentiate them for random selection. Let's say you get Sword Mastery. You would then put your next three skill points into Sword Mastery. Your next skill selection would still have the same options, because no new skills will be available yet (you will only be level 3 or 4, depending on whether or not you've gotten the skill point from the Den of Evil quest yet or not), and nothing will have been maxed yet. So let's say that your next skill is Howl. You will put your next three points into Howl. Now at the next skill selection, you will be either level 6 or 7, so new skills will be available to you. These are now: Howl, Find Potion, Shout, Taunt, Sword Mastery, Axe Mastery, Mace Mastery, Polearm Mastery, Throwing Mastery, Spear Mastery, Bash, and Leap. You would then assign a number to each of these, in the same manner as before, and a skill would be randomly selected from these.

As for the weapon masteries, yes, you could in theory end up with 3 points in each mastery. However, that is why you have the 10 rerolls, to reduce the chances of something like that happening (unless you want it of course).

Also, with both you and your wife playing, make sure there is some way of distinguishing your two characters. The preferable way would be for you to each post separate, same as my wife(water_moon) and I are doing. It could in theory also work if you post both of your updates, and specify which is which, but the first way would be better.

I hope that answers everything, but if not, ask away, and I'll give what help I can. Or someone else (go AE  ) may pop in with the answer.

I'd like to be in on this. I rolled a Sorc using Fire bolt. I guess I won't reroll anything. See you guys on Friday!!

Char. Sorc
Name. Randi

Think I got it now.

Begin of game, you have x number of skills available. Randomly chose skill will get the first 3 points. When you receive the 4th skill point; you need to randomize another choice. That 4th point and the next 2 will go into that skill. When you receive the 7th skill point in the game, you again randomize the available skills and the skill chosen gets that point and the next 2. I think I have it, correct?

The wife has her own account (Tundra) but she says she is not ready to play another hardcore. :-) She is happy just mf'ing with her barbarians.

I rolled a 4 which was a Druid, which I don't like much, so I went with my first reroll and got a (5)Necromancer and I ended up with 1 which was Amplify Damage.... ok time for another reroll and I got a 2 which was Teeth, and I was thinking if I get teeth and Bone Spear, Bone Spirit, mabey prison too... yes a bone necro. 3 rerolls already so that hurts pretty bad.

Name: Helios
Character: Necromancer
First Skill: Teeth

Goltar25, I just wanted to let you know that I will be playing in your tournament. I haven't drawn a random number yet and character; as well as the first skill selection. Figured I would wait until I heard back from my last post that I understood the skill selection finally. :-)

I will post in the next 24 hours my random character and his/her starting skill.

Rolled a 6, means Paladin. Checked all skill available at Level 1 (1=Prayer, 2= Resist Fire, 3=Might, 4=Sacrifice, 5=Smite) and I rolled a 1. If I did it all correctly, I will be playing;

Name: Randomizer
Character: Paladin
1st Skill: Prayer

This shall be interesting.

9. All updates should be posted in this thread, or if this one gets too large, in the current thread for the tournament. Also, all updates should include your Clvl at the completion of each quest/waypoint for the score sheet. If you do not post your Clvl, you will get no points for completion. I will attempt to keep scores updated at least daily.

16. The tournament will begin Friday, October 15, at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time. (Same as forum time if you’re unaware of U.S. time zones.) Players may sign up at any time until the tournament ends, though the sooner you join the better.

Came in to see what time the tourney starts, so I have about 24 hours from now. I believe it is 09:00 PM EST now as I write this.

And to also check on format (in the rules) on how you want us to post our quest/waypoint numbers. Is there a certain format that has been tried and trued; thus widely accepted as the way it should be?

23hrs, 57min, 48 seconds to go. :-)

Is it too late to sign up? If not, then I rolled a paladin with sacrifice. No rerolls, although I probably should having never played hardcore at all or melee in single player or a paladin in a few years. I bet I die quick. I'll think up a name tomorrow. I've got to get some sleep.

We're off! And I'll give the first character update of the tourney :D

Xerious the Amazon started with Jab as her first skill. My hope is to develop a spearie with some javalin skill on the switch. I set it to players3 to try for decent drops and experience - at least on the monsters I decide/need to kill.

She went all the way to the Outer Cloister in the first session. Great luck with maps let her do it very efficiently. Her best find was Death's Guard. After killing Blood Raven she was awarded a Cold Rogue - works for me. One NDE with Treehead Woodfist. He and his fanat-enchanted pack spawned within sight of the entrance from the passage. He ambushed Xerious and luckily I had my fingers on the rejuvs and was able to duck back into the passage a couple times.

Skill rolls were ok. After 3 in Jab I rolled #1 - Jab again. 7-9 went to Critical Strike  Next rolled #8 - Fire Arrow, ugh, reroll. Then #5 - Crit Strike again. So that's six in each skill. My next roll was #4 - Impale, yuck, reroll. Then #10 - Cold Arrow, um, reroll again... Followed by #6 - Crit Strike for the third time. Would have liked to see something else, but will have to do.

Xerious the Spearazon wannabe, lvl12 Outer Cloister

WPs: 1-lvl1 (sprinted right to it), 2-lvl7, 3-lvl9, 4-lvl10, 5-lvl12
Quests: Den-lvl4, Blood-lvl5, Cain-lvl10, Countess-lvl12
Skills: Jab=6, Critical Strike=6
Rerolls used: 3

Good luck to all!
