@Zefimas: You're welcome to post your updates/experiences in this thread, hopefully you'll progress faster than I am!

@all: How do you feel about the allowed versions ruling (1.12 and 1.00 only)?
As a couple of people are having issues with this, I wonder whether we should:

1) Keep things as they are.
2) Allow any version, but have the requirement that it is shown after the player name. I know this gives advantages to some versions, but if we all have freedom to use the version of our choosing, this (IMO) removes the right to complain that "X is using v1.yy and I'm using 1.zz, it's not fair"

I think that, as the "tournament" is already underway, we should take a vote on it.
Voting/opinions on this is only open to those forum members who are listed in NagisaFurukawa's post above (post#40), and the closing date is 9am GMT on Friday.

If the vote is taken to "open things up", any version will be allowed from 9.01 GMT on Friday.

Abstention is implied agreement with the majority. As there are 9 of us still alive and in the list at this time, a tie is impossible.

I don't mind anyone using whatever version they feel they like more. This is just to get the furthest, as long as there is no real "point" system I feel it is all good!

How about just a separate table for each version that people choose to play? That seems the simplest.

All in all Mephisto wasn't a problem, the Fire enchanted Council in Travincal got taken down through damage return from the Golem, so no one had to take its Corpse Explosion, the same went for the one down in level 3 that has Aura (luckily not conviction this time) and Lightning. At the mana burn council there was a ton of Blood Lords, shooting Meteors from the sky, while I just ran in there, blindly trying to hit them I suddenly realised my health dropped like crazy in the Meteor fire. 405 Life isn't worth much with 0% fire resist, luckily I had the full rev in the belt, drank it and ran out of there as fast as I could. With help from The Vortex we managed to spread some of the Blood Lords while other focused on the Golem which made it quite easy.

Mephisto was no big deal, though one of his frost balls hit The Vortex, luckily we aren't someone who goes down in one hit :)

Of interesting items, we found a unique crossbow from Mephisto, the third unique, after The Woestave and The Vortex gambled a Nightsmoke. Only Nightsmoke have been kept. A magic amulet with +47% lightning resist and 5% life leech also dropped, which I'm using now, having 75% lightning resist and some damage return will be good against Diablo, and also a +37 mana ring dropped which The Vortex uses now.

We've also earlier found quite a lot of set items, most of them I've got to use, these are: Death gloves, Sigons helmx2, Sigons shield, Isenharts helmx2, Angelic armor and Angelic sabre.

Of rares we've found quite a few weapons for my Paladin, he's now vielding a War Hammer that gives him 45-115 (or something in that range) zeal, where he earlier used a very nice flail that gave him a 4-45 damage zeal. I still hope we'll gamble Rixots soon, and of course a Tarnhelm for the Necromancer.

An update, a bit more than the promised hour later (some of that RL stuff that pops up from time to time).

Well Andy was no match really, I lowered the players setting to 1 for the fight with andy, or rather I forgot to up it to 8 ;) - That might have been why it was as easy as it was. I cleared the front end of her lair from shaman and fallen. After that it was stab and run, repeat. I didn't even need the prebuff from antidotes. She dropped a Berserkers Hatchet and not much else worth a mention.

I almost forgot - I found no less than 2 (TWO) Rixot's Keens during questing, and one 27% nagel.

As easy as andy was, Radament was difficult. It proved close to impossible to clear the area around him, so as to apply the hit and run tactics that worked so well against andy. I had to re-hire a merc 7 or 8 times just for Radament. Once the area was cleared it was easy though.

Skills are that of a daggermancer for now - 1 point in all available curses and a 1 point Gumby.
I can't wait to get Poison Nova, still quite a long way to go.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to need some skeles to serve as meatshield but I'm reluctant to spend the points though, because I'm hoping I can do all the crowd control I need with my curses. Time will tell.

Right now, I'm on my way to get the Horadric Cube.

More on that in next update.

Pushed on through Act 1 last night over a few gin and tonics. Had a couple of NDEs (one resulted in/caused by near spillage of a fresh drink over the keyboard), but nothing a quick chug of a 'juve and running away couldn't fix.

Andy was incredibly mean, with nothing of any note at all being dropped.

Also I changed my mind for the third time about how to play this barb. I've finally settled on a conc barb (slow and steady) rather than a 'zerker (devastating but unsuited to my playstyle in HC) or a frenzybarb (I fear IM too much).

From reading the replies, unless there is any major upheaval, all versions will be allowed as from tomorrow. I will PM the people who have expressed interest but been put off by version restrictions.

I will also redo the tables tomorrow am - I think purplelocust's suggestion of 1 table per version seems the most sensible.

So far act4 has been nice and easy. There has been some annoying internet drop outs, for some reason. Hopefully it won't happen in the Chaos Sanctuary.

after playing a little bit of classic I reconsidered my char choice. I am now playing a Chessadin ... booooooh :whistling:.... but it solves the damage question. His name is "Louie" so if he survives he will be "King Louie" (gogogo Jungle Book) :smug:.

so far I am doing fine on P8 killing one monster at a time.

As of now, any version/patch is welcome. If you wish to switch to a different version, please do so and change the table below accordingly.

Nothing to report from my progress, except that I strongly suspect MF is broken in classic, as I have had no good drops at all...

I also miss charms and jewels more than I thought I would too.

Not much to report yet but I did get a chance to start out, at least.

@Thyiad: if by "fishy" you mean fishymancer, there is one important issue with classic skelemancers to be aware of. The skellies do not travel with you from act to act. So you can't do the standard "go to Cold Plains to raise an army" method of getting started from later acts. Leaving the Pandemonium Fortress in Act 4 is quite a hurdle for Classic skelemancers- no merc and you need to kill at least one monster yourself to get going there. There are solutions (golem, Attract, bone spear, etc.) but it's a complication that never arises in LoD.

Update.

We've finished the RoF and did also manage to beat the Chaos Sanctuary, pretty impressive we just did it on the exact time we had (I accidently pushed the b.net button and download 1.12 so I had to reinstall, which made us 10-15 minutes late).

We took two drops at the Hellforge, as I can't host game my drop was the first drop, The Vortex going to act1 and unpartying worked, and impressive enough a flawless and a perfect diamond dropped. I'm certain, if it had been possible, a zod would also have dropped :).
I used our previous found flawless diamond together with the new flawless and the perfect one in a 3 socketed tower shield, to realise that I'd +10 strength from my shield, which meant I couldn't equip the extra resist for Chaos Sanctuary, so I had 0-30% in all resist for this area. I tell you sometimes those fire Oblivion Knights seemed to remove 50% of my 430 life bulb in a single hit. As I was also very scared of Iron Maiden my paladin used a marvelous spiked club, dealing 8-10 zeal damage, he actually did get IM'ed while zealing once, minor damage as expected luckily :).
However it showed that Oblivion Knights couldn't be converted and other converted monsters would be decripified and couldn't keep up with the OK's, so we had to take them out the good old way, that was with a tiny spiked club, zeal, smite, might aura, amplify damage, a little wand and a blood golem that I don't know how much damage dealt. Surprisingly the damage was actually rather good, and if it wasn't for the fear of IM, I think me war hammer would have taken those OK's down in one hit.
Lord De Seis wasn't as hard as expected, but due to some major lag during the fights, and knowing how easy I could go down to zero life, I often used my full revs when I lagged, which meant I ended up at the fight against Diablo with 1 full rev and otherwise health potions.

The tactic against Diablo was pretty clear We'd stand in a corner where he wouldn't be able to hit us, I'd remove any prisons that'd capture us with my hammer, and then Diablo would get the honor to take damage to self on the Blood Golem untill he was down, well that's the tactic, but while running for the corner I lagged, and as Diablo was following me and I could see I was taking damage, though nothing was near I used the last full rev, and a couple of health pots afterwards, just to realise shortly after that Diablo had shifted target to the Golem, and taken it out in one hit, without loosing any major damage :(. He'd often use his lightning attack against the Golem it seemed, so it was pretty clear that I had to try to get some good hits in on Diablo while the Golem was distracting him, ready to run away while drinking health, hoping I wouldn't lag.

Anyway I'd from hsaurus shield, angelic armor, isenhart's helm, and 2 rings, a damage reduction of 9 I believe, that together with 75% lightning resist (an amulet with +47% lightning resist we found before the battle against Mephisto, also with 5% ll), made his Lightning attack very dealable, actually on about the same level as a normal flayer shaman could do, which meant I could use a single health pot for every time he used his lightning attack, and survive without any problems. Likewise, eventhough his melee attack did hurt, it did also hurt himself rather badly, and was also something that could be healed away, so it ended up with Diablo getting a beating by a Paladin who had expected to pretty much only be useable for converting OK's in the Chaos Sanctuary for dealing with the OK's in general, and having to clear some prisons while his powerful Necromancer ally would take care of the bad guys :grin:.

One last question before making a 1.06 table:

Is softcore with a "one death and you're out" also acceptable?
Because by reinstalling everything, I haven't got any high level character, and with that comes no hardcore mode for the moment being -.-

My barb KingKong has made it safely through act 1, there weren't too many NDE, except for Tristram where I was swarmed by mobs when all of the sudden Griswold casted Amplify damage (thank god for Leap) and Andy, who was more dangerous than I thought:crazyeyes:
Atm he has killed Radamant without too much trouble, and is headed for the cube with the experience of 14 levels of bashing and brawling, with most of his points atm put in mace mastery (you didn't expect a character named after a monkey to be wielding anything else but a big log of wood did you?)

The thing I miss most is precious /players 8,
because leveling on p1 is slooooooooow!!

Two questions before ending this post:
-Is MF broken in 1.06 like it is in 1.07, as in having to cross certain benchmarks to actually come into effect?
-AR, the bane of every melee character: without charms, how do I raise it?
Simply use weapons with ar on them?

It's EmperorMoo's call, but one thing you could do is to get someone else to send you a hardcore char, if someone can make a hardcore 1.06 char.

because leveling on p1 is slooooooooow!!
I've only been playing with 1.00,1.07 and 1.12, when trying to do this, but it has worked on all of them. In my experience you get clearly most experience pr. time frame, by skipping den of evil, getting to level 2 in blood moor, level 3 in cold plains, 4, maybe 5 in stony field (cast a tp near the stones, if you aren't going for the wp), 5 to 6 in underground passage, and then continue to outer cloister (though remember to get the scroll from the tree), getting some very good experience in tamoe highland you'll be level 7-9 before/after taking down tristram through your tp in town (which you can access as soon as you return to town through your inner cloister wp).

At level 6 you can also use poison potions, which gives you a much needed AoE attack for increased speed, which is something the barb really doesn't have.

The main problem with this can be you can have a hard time hitting the opponents and you need to fill up with a lot of potions before when making the tp in stony field as you'll have to keep that one up for saving time.

That's in my experience the fastest way to level on /p1, with a sorc/druid/assassin I can often get to level 8 in 12-15 minutes, with a amazon/barbarian/necromancer/paladin it usually takes 25-30 minutes, which is also quite fast if you ask me. Continueing from that point, you should hit about level 11-12 after having defeated Andariel and could be in Far Oasis during 1 hour if you're quick (that's if you don't do radement, and avoid most stuff on the way), where those poison portions will make havoc on the itches, the beetles and those saber cats, which always comes in big crowds, which means an AoE attack will get you a giant experience boost. Often you can rerun that area to hit level 17-18. From that level I'd probably continue playing, and doing the temples + full clears in act4 will probably get you to a decent level in a pretty decent time. I don't know if this is valid for 1.06, but it is for 1.00, and probably for 1.12 with my act5 experience in mind, as well, so make sure you are level 25 when entering nightmare, or I think you won't get very much experience during the rest of the game.

Yes I think you'll have to find stuff with + to attack rating, I suppose rings also spawns with +100 attack rating in that version and with an increase of 400% from your items you get to 200*5=+1000 attack rating, which probably is pretty decent in that version, though I can't say for sure. You could also raise dexterity, but I don't think it's worth it (something along the lines of +20 attack rating pr. level IIRC).

I don't know if this is valid for 1.06, but it is for 1.00, and probably for 1.12 with my act5 experience in mind, as well, so make sure you are level 25 when entering nightmare, or I think you won't get very much experience during the rest of the game.

Best experience for versions 1.00 - 1.06b is in act 4 because in act 1 nightmare you will get very low experience.
Also for nightmare and hell good leveling is in Maggot Lair level 3 due to fact that young maggots actually GIVE xp when killed. Just wait until they hatch to a large number (near Coldwurm) and let the xp flow.

@zefimas & all: SC with one death and it's considered deeds is totally OK (due to the highly relaxed nature of this tournament), but personally I'd prefer if you didn't as I find (in my case, for sure) that playstyle is influenced by whether you are playing HC or not. I tend to take even more ridiculous risks than usual when I'm SC. The first death of any SC char can be entered in the "Deeds" table, and that will be treated as the furthest you got.

I haven't played at all since Friday, as I just haven't had the time: this is the first time (16:40 on Sunday) that I've had time to turn the PC on since Friday afternoon. Looking forward to cracking on through the rest of Act2 tomorrow evening though.
