How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

Hi all.

The runes I have so far are - Nef, ith and Tir.
Can I make any good weapons for myself out of those?
Are their any weapons I can make similar to the polearm recipe? High damage mauls or swords combined with runes maybe?
Any good weapon that would beat my current one would be great.

Also, with attack rating, what does it actually do? I notice it doesnt increase a weapons damage, what does it do? Make them hit more often or something?

With those you could make nadir, but that's in a helm, i can't think of any other runewords right now. There are some cube recipes for weapons, i'll list the ones you might find interesting:

Code:
4 Health Potions (of any type) + Ruby (any type) + Magical Sword --> A Magic Sword of the Leech

    * ilvl = 30. (Quite low.)
o The sword must be magical, and this recipe will reset the stats, always granting "of the Leech" suffix (4-5% Life Stolen Per Hit).
o There is a chance of getting a random prefix as well.

1 Diamond + 1 Staff + 1 Kris + 1 Belt --> Savage Polearm Class Weapon

    * ivl = 50.
o Creates a polearm class weapon with the Savage prefix (66-80% Enhanced Damage).
o May spawn with a random suffix as well.
o The polearm type will randomly choose from a Bardiche, Battle Scythe, Bill, Halberd, Lochaber Axe, Partizan, Poleaxe, Scythe, Voulge, or War Scythe.

3 Chipped Gems + 1 Magic Weapon --> Socketed Magic Weapon

    * ilvl = 25.
o This recipe rerolls the stats on a magical weapon, setting it with new, random modifiers and 1-2 sockets.
o Magical weapons that can not have sockets, such as throwing weapons, will spawn with new modifiers but no sockets.

3 Standard Gems + 1 Socketed Weapon --> 1 Socketed Magic Weapon

    * ilvl = 30
o This recipe rerolls the stats on the weapon, creating a new magical version of the same weapon, with random modifiers and 1-2 sockets.
o Any type of gems may be used, but they must be normal (between flawed and flawless) in quality.
o Magical weapons that can not have sockets, such as throwing weapons, will spawn with new modifiers but no sockets.

3 Flawless Gems + 1 Magic Weapon --> Socketed Magic Weapon

    * ilvl = 30
o This recipe rerolls the stats on the weapon, creating a new magical version of the same weapon, with random modifiers and 1-2 sockets.
o Magical weapons that can not have sockets, such as throwing weapons, will spawn with new modifiers but no sockets.

These recipes can roll some nice weapons for your level, but most likely wont. There's also crafted items, but that's (in my experience at least) rather expensive at your level. I'll list the recipes you want to know anyway:

Code:
Blood Weapon

Magical Axe (any)
+ Jewel (any)
+ Ort Rune (#9)
+ Perfect Ruby Blood Weapon

Preset Mods:
1-4% Life Leech
+10-20 Hit Points
+35-60% Damage

Caster Weapon

Magical Rod (any)
+ Jewel
+ Tir Rune (#3)
+ Perfect Amethyst

Preset Mods:
4-10% Regenerate Mana
+10-20 Mana
+1-5% Mana Steal

Hitpower Weapon

Magical Blunt Weapon
+ 1 Jewel (any)
+ Tir Rune (#3)
+ Perfect Sapphire

Preset Mods:
5% chance of casting Slvl 4 Frost Nova when hit
Attacker Takes 3-7 Damage
+35-60% Enhanced Damage

Safety Weapon

Magical Spear (any)
+ Jewel (any)
+ Sol Rune (#12)
+ Perfect Emerald

Preset Mods:
Reduced Damage 1-4
Reduced Magic Damage 1-2
+5-10% Defense

For the matter of attack rating, you are correct, attack rating(AR) is important for your chance to hit. It isn't the only factor for your chance to hit though, the diffrence in levels beween you and the monster is also very important. When you attack a lvl 1 monster with a lvl 30 character you will almost always hit, no matter your ar. If you try to hit a level 35 monster with a level 30 character you will miss a lot. most melee characters aim for 10k ar at the end of hell i beleave( don't know for sure, the only character i played wich needed ar always had enough through skills, so...) but hell is pretty far still. You should be able to get enough ar from skills untill late nightmare at least...

I finished the first quest. I get to choose an item to put sockets in. Should I choose my maul? Will I keep it for a long time?
Its current damage is 55 to 88, its a very good weapon, fast and strong. If I socket it, which would be the best gems/runes to add to it?

Also, I hear now that I've defeated diablo, I can unlock the secret cow level. Can I?

you can't open the cow level untll you've finished de difficulty, so you need to defeat Baal (the actboss of act 5) first. I would save the socket quest untill you find something really worth keeping (gear that's good in hell, mostly exeptional en elite set/uniques. The act 5 socket quest is the only way to get sockets in a set/unique(green/gold) item that doesn't have them on its own. If you do choose to add sockets to your maul now (you'll probably replace it soon no matter how good it is, items that drop in nightmare (exeptional items) are usually even better) you could add a amn rune or skull for extra life leech (and thus survivability) or an elemental rune/gem for extra damage. there's other options, but for low level chars these usually are the best in a weapon (unless its a caster in wich case a tir rune can be very nice too)

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

Helllo.
Thankyou very much for the help.

I socketed a piece of body armour. it has 200 defense. It only got 2 sockets from it unfortunatley but I added to runes to it, one is 30% lightning resist and 30% poison resist. Now I have 75% fire resist, 75% lightning resist and 50% poison resist.

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

You might even be able to shop a better weapon, btw. You see, the vendors in town that sell weapons/armor restock whenever you leave town. So if you have the first waypoint, you can check larzuk for good weapons, then hit the wp and leave town, then immediately re-enter and check larzuk again.

This assumes you've got some gold saved up, which may not be true after your disaster with diablo.

Here's a general rule of thumb that's true basically throughout the game. If you get stuck and can't get past a certain area, either your gear needs upgrading or your character needs to level up. If you dont have uber gear saved away, the solution to these two problems is the same: go back to the last area that you felt confident in, and kill everything you see.

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

Hi all.

I am having a big load of trouble trying to kill the minions of destruction, in the throne of destruction area.
They are so hard to kill and pile me, kill me instantly.
I have about 25 dead bodies their, and am struggling to get my armour and weaponry back.
How do I defeat these minions? Im level 36 now.

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

I'd recommend leveling for a bit. I'm usually around level 42-45 when killing normal Baal with normal playing. And especially if going untwinked leveling is a good way to go. If the Worldstone Keep gives you too much trouble go back to the Ancient's Way tunnels for leveling.

As for the Minions of Destruction, they are the hardest of the five minion waves especially for melee characters. One advice I'd give is that you try to position yourself so that your merc (or your bear summon if you're using it) are taking the hits if you yourself can't take them. If the merc has life leech on his weapon he should be able to survive for a while. Feeding him with lots of potions helps to extend that period even further. With you not taking the hits you should be able to take them out with time, eventually.

You can also try to fight the wave in smaller packs by luring them away from each other. This is hard however as the minions tend to run back to Lister.

Also if you're currently playing with the /players 8 command, you could try cutting back to a lower setting (before the wave spawns).

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

hello thankyou for the post. i ended up luring them one by one and using the bear as a tank. I then killed baal, didnt get really good drops but some were ok. now I've finished the game.
What do you guys do when you finish the game?
Keep playing the same account or create a new one?

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

I think most of us don't call it "finishing" unless we kill Baal at Hell level. ;)

On the other hand, if this was the first time you've played through the game it may be fun to try one of the other classes. You've already got some gear, so it should be a bit easier this time. I suppose you know how to use ATMA to transfer items between different characters? If not, check out the stickied thread at the top of the SPF.

By the way, I really enjoyed reading this thread. It brought back memories of the first time I played the game and had similar problems killing Diablo.

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

Hi thankyou very much for your post. No I've got no idea about the atma thing so I will try that.

I am thinking maybe starting back as a barbarian or a necromancer, which out of the 2 do you guys and girls favor? which is a funner class to play?

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

Now that you've finished the Normal difficulty you could enter the Cow Level on that difficulty. That's done by retrieving the Wirt's Leg from Tristram and combining that with a tome of town portal in the Horadric Cube. Be careful however not to kill the Cow King who resides near the fort looking structure in that level, because if you kill him you won't be able to open the portal again for that difficulty. Take care though as the cows can be very deadly. ;)

Normally after the Normal (pun intended?) difficulty people usually start on Nightmare (which is now an option every time you want to play your character) which is obviously harder but also rewards with better weapons and other items. And after Nightmare there's Hell. The Hell difficulty is... well, Hell. Especially for untwinked characters and more so for untwinked melee characters.

But there's no set rules for what to do. It only depends on what you yourself want to do. The possibilities are endless. Usually people get a few characters through Hell and start MF'ing for better gear. Then make a few new characters and MF some more. The cycle continues. When this gets boring the general SPF madness begins. Unbelievable challenging tournaments, run marathons that would make your average Joe go nuts, the occasional MF Olympics, the list goes on.

If you like your current character I recommend you take a shot at Nightmare. If it proves to be too much of a challenge you can start a new character. There's lots of builds to choose from in the stickied guide thread. If you wish to aim at finishing Hell difficulty probably the most popular build for untwinked play is the Fishymancer (that's a Necromancer using Skeletons, named after the forum member Night_Fish). Then there's the ever so useful MF chars, the sorceresses. As I said, the possibilities are endless.

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

thankyou all.

I just looked and I had no idea if i started nightmare id still have all my stuff. I thought its just like starting again from scratch, only at a harder dificulty. I am going to try complete nightmare now.

I could level up for abit on the cow level in normal, then I could start nightmare, right?
Do the drops from normal continue on in nightmare, or do they go back to the bad drops like clubs and daggers etc.

What is Mfing?

Also, If I keep going the way I am, putting skills on werewolf and summon grizzly, aswell as lycanthropy. Will I have a chance at defeating hell? Or because I put no skill points into any elemental stats, and put some into werebear aswell instead of just werewolf, will I fail in hell?

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

Hi.

I used the atma thing. And forgot to click save and exited it all. Now When I try load diablo, my user account profile, it loads a slittle bit and then comes up with an error saying - Unable to load game, bad inventory data.

Any ideas?

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

The drops on Nightmare basically pick up from where the left at the end of Normal Act V. You do get the occasional club and dagger, but overall the drops are better. More exceptional (all items have basically three different version of them, one for each difficulty, exceptionals are the "nightmare" items and the much sought for elite items are the "hell" items) items begin to drop and by the end of Nightmare also elite items begin to appear. Also magical and rare items get better mods on the higher difficulties.

Are you investing in any offensive skills, like Feral Rage or Fury? A common werewolf build is the Furywolf which uses the Fury skill as the main attack with the occasional Feral Rage attack to keep the Feral charge going.

When playing with a melee character your success is greatly determined by the weapon you have. Some builds get by with less, but some require a lot from their weapon. But the rest of your gear matter just as much, for example each difficulty applies a resistance penalty for your character. This penalty is -40 on Nightmare and a whopping -100 on Hell. Other things change as well, mainly monster stats. Monster get immunities for different elements and even physical immunities so that normal attacks can't harm them.

MF'ing is short for Magic Finding which consists of loading your character up with gear that has the mod "Better Chance to Find Magic Items" on it and then running certain monsters or areas of the game for unique/set (or whatever) items. Popular targets are all act bosses (except for Duriel, since he's hard to get to) and Super Unique monsters (monsters which always appear at the same places) like Pindleskin. The areas that people run for items are usually the areas with a level of 85 (The Pit in Tamoe Highlands, Ancient Tunnels in the Lost City, etc. on Hell difficulty that is). The area level of 85 means that normal monsters can drop all but three items in the game and special monsters can drop every item in the game (this is a game mechanics thing).

Also I'd recommend you run Normal Baal for levels instead of the Cow Level since the Moo Moo Farm is generally not a good place to level up.

Edit: I got to get rid of the parentheses in mid-sentence. I realize it makes the text very hard to read, but I just can't get rid of it...

Edit2: As for the ATMA error, I can't say. Eventhough I try hard not to use ATMA when the character is open, accidents happen. But I've never gotten an error because of that. :(

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

thankyou very much for your help.

I dont suppose you know if their is anything I can do with regards to the atma thing?

thankyou.

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

It looks like I'm going to have to start a new account, as I am no longer able to acess my current one. What a bummer.

Hey N'thraxx. Out of curiosity, what characters do you like the best in the single player mode? What builds did you make them when you first started out? Like I am.

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

Atma makes back-ups for your characters everytime you use it. There should be a file named your_character_name.org. Delete your original save file and replace the .org at the end of back up with .d2s.

Maybe this solves your problem if ATMA really made a back up on your first try. If it solves your problem make sure never to use ATMA again while your character is still open in diablo.

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

Wow it worked!@!!!!
Thankyou so so much. To all of you.
I am going to stay with this account now, and check out the cows for abit.]

I just went into normal mode and noticed that all the maps are gone. The waypoints are still their but everything else is not visible, does this mean I have to go through it al again and find the dungeons etc?

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

The maps are rerolled everytime you change difficulty or play in TCP/IP games so yes you have to search them again. Everything else however stays, so it's usually only a minor inconvenience. However, sometimes when you're running a certain map, let's say for example a good Lower Kurast map and accidentally press the wrong difficulty, let's just say it's very frustrating. *rant*

I restarted when 1.10 came out and as so many before and after me I started with a Fishymancer (great guide in the stickies) and enjoyed it. After that I believe I made a Hammerdin, a Paladin using Blessed Hammer. It's one of the most overpowered builds in the game although it might be a little hard to aim the hammers at first since they travel in a spiral.

Then I made the character I've enjoyed the most and also the one that I've played the most. My Blizzard Sorceress. With an immensely powerful attack she can kill anything in the blink or few blinks of an eye, even on Hell with /players 8. Excluding of course monsters that are immune to cold which have to be left for the merc to handle. Playing the sorceress through Hell is a task, but a task that can be done. I think I just skipped everything cold immune. But after you're through Hell, it's all MF. I've probably leveled her from 87 to level 94 doing nothing else but MF runs, mainly Pindleskin.

Also my Lightning Trapper Assasin, Wind Druid and Fanatic Zealot were fun to play, but no char has yet to pass my blizzsorc in played hours. This could change though as I'm currently running Lower Kurast with my Lightning Sorceress. ;)

Re: How do I defeat Diablo? He kills me and my team in 1 hit.

Oh btw, about bad inventory datas, you can try loading the character again in atma, and remove all his equipment and inventory and stash items one by one, while trying to enter the game everytime you remove an item. Once your chracter can be loaded, ti means the last item you removed is the corrupted one. Just put it on a spare character and delete the character (along with the corrupted item), and your character should work fine (you can return the other removed items back to the character. If problem arises again, it means more than 1 item were corrupted. Rinse and repeat previous steps).
Not that it matters much since you already restored you character via backup, but it might become handy to remember this method if one day your character item file got corrupted just after getting a good item that is not on the backup file yet.
