[2018] Tournament: Set/Unique Worshippers 2017 [by jiansonz]

Finished Act 2 just now and managed to get a ammy which was pleasing as i had been using vipers one. One shiny Noky relic taking S/U count to 5. Also had failed set spiked shield, axe as well as failed gold great axe and gargoyle head. Duriel was oddly quicker than normal even if several skellies were busy playing in the corner.....

Got through Act I, and Andariel rewarded my persistence with my first three items... two meh, but one about the best you can hope for at this stage of the tournament. Just picked up my Cube in act 2, with no further S/U luck yet... Onward!

Main trouble in Act IV Nightmare wasn't the progress, it was making sure I lost as little loot as possible.

Three kinds of creatures can make me lose out on drops of they get slain up towards the very edges of the early areas, or over lava in the later areas: Finger mages, Dark Familiars and Burning Souls. The first two flee when they get hurt, which can complicate things. I do not have the kind of crowd control that some other classes have, and my barbarian friend uses Bash a lot, which may lead to monsters making a run for it. My methods for trying to prevent it from happening:
- Cast a Decoy right next to the monster Vikhyat is fighting, on the side away from him.
- Same idea as above, but place Viri herself there instead.
- (special for part of the City - and great vs. a Champion bat pack) Use walls (preferrably corners) on the few buildings that are around.

My first Valkyrie on the last session was great, with both poison damage and ctc Amp:

That Valkyrie survived the entire RoF. She soon died in the CS. Doom Knights dish out heavy poison damage with their spectral hits, and getting Amped and Decrep-ed as well eventually were too much for her. I did save her about three times with town healing, but was then too slow the next time.

Vikhyat wasn't a fast killer (he's still using Bloodletter) but with the life steal he is better at surviving than when he uses Blade of Ali Baba. Viri poked a few Charged Strikes at almost every 'megademon' critter in the act, softening them up for Vikhyat.

Resists for Diablo:

Even if his Firestorm can hurt a lot if you stand right next to him, this resist setup still led to that plan.
I took him on /p3, not bothering with any CB items (Crushflange, Guillaume's).
I trusted in the raw power of Charged Strike.

Aha, so he prefers attacking Vikhyat. I gave him a few potions but figured out they wouldn't last at the rate he would need them. I didn't want to move now that I was in position. Didn't want any unpredictable mess. Diablo had already used Bone Prison twice right at the start of the fight - jailing Vikhyat. So I let him have his way with Vikhyat.

If I'm not close enough for the lightning hose to miss, this can get very dangerous. I was super ready with the rejuve buttons...

The Firestorm didn't cause me any great scare, but some sort of potion was needed every time he threw one. Not that he got off that many. Resurrected Vikhyat for the killing blow. Had to do it again, but the next time he got close enough for the hose to miss, and scored the kill.

S/U finds weren't many, considering the huge MF number we're wearing at the moment.

It's because it's kind of a disguised Nazi salute - each 8 standing for the 8th letter in the alphabet "H". I don't dare to write more though, because I don't want to get banned :p you can google it though.

Up to the River of Flame, level 32.

The good news is, I've found 16 S/U items... thanks, Gull Dagger!

The bad news is, 3 of those items have been Cleg's gloves, 3 have been Berserker's Hatchet, and none have been particularly useful for a sorceress (aside from the Gull itself, which I suppose will actually pay off someday).

Duriel and Mephisto both dropped zilch, nuthin', nada. Diablo's next!
 
Sorry Skunk about the Deeds. I got a Gull right off the bat, A1 Normal like you, and all the act bosses in normal stiffed me too.

However, the power of the Gull cannot be denied any longer. We've gotten a MAJOR haul the last act in NM. 98% of all monsters in the act died while I had that on so I have to give much of the credit to that silly dagger (poignard). Here goes...

We started off in the Bloody Foothills with quill rats and hawks. I don't particularly like fighting either of them. The quill darts are hard for my old eyes to see and the hawks move quickly in a random pattern and often fly right past the merc and hit AndrewNiteTorch. Not particularly dangerous unless it is a quill rat boss with an aura or extra strong, but we got through it. Every time I play, the Bloody Foothills seems to get bigger and bigger. I guess I'm tiring of that area...

In the Frigid Highlands, this group of slow-moving Blunderbores allowed me to spin around like Andrew was in a washing machine, banging off of all of them and keeping them from being able to surround Gulzar. I have noticed that a combat shrine helps our AR quite a bit but not the damage much. I guess that is because Charge already has a very high %ED and the shrine adds a small proportional percentage.

On our way to rescue Anya, we were able to pin one boss against the wall and another boss against the banks of the Frozen River. Neither could move very much and you can see where I used the opportunity to switch to the Cleglaw's here to get some extra damage. For a simple set, I love the CB and DS and scaling damage and AR. We rarely miss an attack.

This boss Frenzytaur never caused us much trouble. I think he came out of an Evil Urn. I didn't mind popping those guys because Gulzar's HF aura and the Cleglaw's Brace make them crawl. Even when frenzied up they took a few seconds to take a swing. I only worried about the pack teleporting directly onto Andrew, and that didn't happen.

The Icy Cellar had gloams, so I ran Salvation pretty much the whole time unless I knew we were in the clear and had led some bad guys to an otherwise safe area for some killage. Even with Salvation their lightning hurt!

The Halls of Pain greeted us with this mild (!) stair trap. There are also two vile mothers there also. I dislike those baby belchers. They are a real pain for Andrew and Gulzar. Andrew ends up sniping at them to take out the mothers' health but he always absorbs drive by gougings from the pups while doing it. That tactic won't work as well in the next difficulty... In this case I made a mad dash for safety through uncharted areas, which I don't really enjoy much but I was able to lose a couple of the champions and I can do two at a time no problem.

Nihlathak was surrounded by a ton of minions and so we took it slow but we got him after clearing out the room and letting Gulzar absorb about 50 corpse explosions. Sorry buddy! I tried to redeem the bodies, but Nihlathak was just quicker sometimes.

The Ancients were pushovers. I did them on /P1, did that cost me experience? I can't remember these days.

The Throne of Destruction had Gulzar bugged invisible again, which is a blessing in that he can get close to Baal without getting decrepified, but was tough against the last three waves since I had no shield. Fortunately AndrewNiteTorch is very fast. The first two waves saw a lot of Redemption as the aura until the carvers and skeletons were cleaned up, and back to Conviction for the heavier duty fights. The third wave guys sent about 200 hydras at me, because they didn't have any other targets I guess and Andrew kept running away like he was in a Monty Python movie. Eventually they went down. The fourth wave was fun and is what is shown here. Back and forth we pushed them around until Gulzar dropped a few. The minions were the same way even though they pushed us all the way back to nearly the stairs.

Baal was fun, he cloned himself a couple times and we dodged tentacles and smote him to within an inch of his life before switching to the Gull poignard for the killing blow. He dropped a really nice knife.

Now, you're probably wondering based upon that last picture and my teaser at the beginning of the last post about what weapon I used in the Throne. I actually did use Cleglaw's Brace against Baal but I was trying out something in the Throne that I was hoping to get for a while and finally did in the Ancient's way. It has 143%ED (a low roll) but 30% CB and 50% Slows Target, and blinds enemies too, which does come in handy.

These also dropped, making two game changing drops in a single area! Gore Riders give me an extra 15% DS and CB and some OW too. Nice! A big upgrade over the Sander's Boots I was wearing.

My other drops for the act are below. One of the amulets was Tancreds (worn with the armor for the 78% MF), the unique one is Nokozan, the Pike is ethereal, the Lum and Pul are my second complete set (both still not used) and the Gul is just a neat if useless drop.

Blood Raven didn't stand a chance. I pushed her back and forth from the Crypt to the Mausoleum until she was dead. Easiest fight ever!

Our drops in the act (really, only the Blood Moor, Cold Plains, Cave and Burial Grounds areas) so far. The gloves are an upgrade from the Cleglaw's, the Death Mask is a good one for Gulzar (he'll make his target even slower), the Crown was an Iratha's (woo hoo! We also have the amulet for extra resists when we're done with the Tancred's) and the Sazabi's armor is a grailer for me.

If you had the runes to upgrade two weapons, would you do the merc weapon (a given based upon how I play but I don't have anything really better than the Battlebranch at this point) and the Gull dagger (I do still plan on using it quite a bit) or the Heart Carver (a 199% ED example but it would do 2000-3000 damage before 50% DS if upgraded) or the Minotaur (would be a monster weapon, hitting 40% harder as an elite as opposed to the exceptional now). Both the Heart Carver and Minotaur would require significant investment of skill points, which I have been saving for just such an occasion.

That's all for tonight. Andrew has now found 76 S/U items, has completed Berzerker's and Cleglaw's sets (mostly both retired except Cleg's gloves are still in game stash) and we've gotten major upgrades in helms, gloves, boots. Now we need a better belt than the Hwanin's, which I still use for the PMH (but I could also use the Blackhorn's Face for that). We also need a good armor with some good resists like Tal Rasha's or Goldskin or SOTV.

He's at level 76 now, at the Cold Plains WP.

You CAN'T get close enough for it to miss in Normal difficulty, it hits at point-blank range!

@OldSoldier: Great progress, and some very nice finds.
(My merc wouldn't mind one of those rune sets, a Bloodletter Falcata would be cool...)

I am pretty sure The Ancients give the same XP regardless of players setting. The individual kills don't provide any XP, just the reward for defeating them and (IIRC) it's always the same.

Yup, that's in NM Tristram! Good old Griswold. Earliest I've ever seen a high rune (by a long way). Took me a while to register as I've been reading Ith as Ist since the start of the tourney so i don't really believe my eyes anymore. Shame it is completely useless for Roland.

@OldSoldier I've Guardianed with an upped Minotaur before. The list of mods make it a very useful end game weapon.

Hey, Caliph here. I got banned for spam apparently. Maybe I posted too many screenshots and/or my account was too new :(

Anyways, if someone could help me get un-banned that would be awesome!

In other news, I beat act5 norm. I found a few more S/U's, but most of them were duplicates. However, in cows I found a bloodthief and a sol rune, which I used to up the bloodthief. That should make a nice NM starting weapon for my merc. I used the socket quest on a wormskull helm I found & put a flawless topaz in it -- hopefully doing this early will help. I also came across a griswold's edge, which I am now using (serpent lord on switch for mana).

I'm curious as to what a 'Dancer' build is. DTalon as main skill? Something else?
I can imagine that Serpent Lord is a nice weapon for a kicker, as long as the boots are 'big'.

A dancer is, to my knowledge, focused on the combination of kicks & traps, mainly DS. I've gotten to the point where DS is a bit stronger than my kicks, probably due to sigons falling of on /p8. I've stacked my inventory with +elemental dmg charms, but the going is still somewhat slow without DS. If I can get a 3rd sigons piece to drop, I'll happily take the 50% bonus from the boots.
