The answer is..... that's OK just equip all of the set items and thereby activate that obsession item. However, you cannot claim a 5 point bonus for your equipment if one of those set items is needed and it does not mention one of your obsessions. That means that you will want to save those other regular items that did have the proper references in ATMA so that you can legitimately claim your bonus at the end of the difficulty level.

To put it simply, you can equip set items as long as the item has an obsession reference, or that item is needed to activate an obsession reference on another set item.

Now, that may not be as obsessive as not allowing it, but from what I have experienced, by the time it becomes an issue for someone, they will likely not want to use any of the gear anyway. One advantage to this may be having something to equip in NM. Those exceptional items are going to be hard to find and a few set items may be very comforting. Therefore, hold on to all of your set items in hopes of filling out the set and giving yourself something to wear in NM.

I would be interested in seeing if this helps anyone. If you find that you can take advantage of this, give us a post with details on the set items you use.

Here you say you cannot claim a bonus, and in your last post you say you can. as for the part where you say that I was wrong, I actually meant to say that, but I guess my english just isn't good enough to make you understand

Oops. Sorry bout that. I started this char a little before i posted in the very beginning. At first he was called Obsessive. After i posted i realized that there was already a toon named that so i used Atma to change it to Obsession. Sorry for the confusion all.

Just a minor update. OBSESSION made it all the way through the dessert and collected all the staff pieces without a hitch. The blessed aim merc made it very easy to hit anything and everything. I think i will keep him until the end. Currently just begining the Arcane Sanc. Recently, i have been choosing the right path to the summoner on the first try. Lets hope that this streak continues.

After my last update, I did continue playing Nerullan a bit, I think until rescuing Cain, today I continued and finished act I nightmare. He did have an NDE in the catacombs due to me failing to see a goatman who promptly blocked the entrance for my army, I did manage to get a townportal out somehow and stayed alive. I really missed not being able to hotkey the townportal. Andariel took ages, and I had to travel back to the jail a couple of times to raise a new army, since I quickly ran out of bodies in the catacombs. It was a good thing I did not do full clears so I could still kill things and use their bodies. As you might have guessed, Andariel was done at players 8, and not having decrepify was what made it though. For that matter, all was done at players 8, except the tower cellar level 5, which did yield two runes from the Countess, eth and tir iirc.
After starting nightmare shabbily dressed (savage partizan for the merc, jewelry, rare war spear, stealth armour, safety belt, blood crescent and cleglaw's claw for Nerullan), Nerullan and his merc are now fully dressed, although it's a different merc right now, a mighty merc, who showed his valour by already gaining all the five levels he was behind upon hiring in the Lut Gholein sewers.
Nerullan's last actions were gaining a level and gambling, when my computer suddenly decided that I'd played too much Diablo already and crashed the game and/or wine. Luckily I could still open my character, at least in atma (I still have to try in the game, but after resaving in atma it should be okay), to see that I did not lose the hotspurs I had just gambled. Anyway, I'll call it a day, and if I counted right, and no one posted simultaneously, I even reach the top of the list in spite of not having maxed a single obsession yet.

Two more gear questions:
It was said before that you could use set item A with set item B if at least one of them got an obsession by that equipping, now I do have two items of a set, of which item A already has an obsession affix and item B not, however, by equipping item B I get another obsession affix on item A, fulfilling the above requirement. My guess is however that this is not allowed, since item A already was equippable and item B gains no obsession affix, am I correct?

What's the verdict on circlets and coronets? I assume circlets and coronets are normal, tiaras exceptional, and diadems elite, since the diadem is an upgrade of the tiara which is an upgrade of the coronet. On the other hand, with level requirements, it makes more sense to regard the coronet already as exceptional and both the tiara and the diadem as elite.

Edit: I must add I will have to move again through a small part of the Rocky Waste thanks to the crash (I was gambling in town but had already cleared a bit), but I should not have to kill too much again, since I will go counterclockwise this time.

So far I cleared all areas and killed all bosses in p8, no problems occured and I had a few good drops, too (although not from Mephisto).
Found a rare Orb with +2 to my obsession skill, MDR-3, +18 Mana (to name the most important mods). Esp. nice are the gloves, which grant me 22%MF, 24% Fire Resistance, 14% Cold Resistance and 76% More Gold.

I'm currently Level32 and need 17 more levels to max out my first obsession. Don't know if I'll manage to do that until NM. I think about making a "Leaf" Staff, I think I can afford to lose a Tir and a Ral rune

Would grant me +3 to all Fire Skills (i.e. to FW) and to Warmth...very nice indeed, because Warmth is no synergy and thus has not even one point.

Planning to run Act IV on Friday.

I have only one charm that is pretty weak, GC adds 1-3 fire damage. No real NDE lately, a couple of times my life was dropping pretty quick do to carelessness. I am moving slowly, but trying to stay persistant hoping for some nice drops soon. Going to have to be careful with elemental attacks because resists are still kind of weak right now.

That settles it! I am going to spend the rest of this evening going through all the posts and collecting all of the magnificent decisions that I have made (and then immediately forgotten about). I apologize for the mistake. I will stand by the original decision. You cannot claim the five points when using a set item whose only purpose is to allow another set item to be used.

I have never tried to upgrade a corontet or a tiara, but based on your statement that a coronet upgrades to a tiara and a tiara upgrades to a diadem, I go with your first assessment:

This was actually required as most of her equipment was sold when moving into Nightmare, including her javalins. Since Plague Javalin doesn't work without the Javalin part, gambling at Gheed was required. Over and over and over and over and over again. Finally a Tangerine War Javalin was obtained and she could venture forth, going as far as saving Cain before settling down for the night to swap stories with the rogues.

The end of A2 was about what was expected. Sadly, the arcane sanc streak was busted. I did, however, get it right on the third try instead of having to go all 4 ways.

Duriel was a little tougher than i expected though. Of course this is the first time i have faced him with a melee character so i really didnt know what to expect. Luckily, i set the player setting down to 1. His HF aura just about did me in. Got zeal locked and almost didnt make it to the portal in time. After about five trips to town to resurect my moron, the oversized bug finally fell. What did i get for my efforts? 2 flawed gems and a scroll of town portal! Oh well, hopfully Meph will be kinder to me, if i can get past all those pesky flayers.

A2 did give me a few grailers: a crushflange and a Hsarus' iron stay.

I don't think he can do that, but what might be possible is to rewrite the first post, with all the details on rules that have been decided on since, and ask a mod to replace the original with the new version. That way, people who want to join later can also easily see all the rules right upon joining.

I have a question about stat points. Are the 5 points from the act 3 quest spent the same as level ones? I am assuming they are but just want to make sure.

I would feel cheated if I stopped doing them now with this character, Ive alredy wasted so much time doing full clears. Normal full clears are pretty dumb with very few unique mobs.
