1.13 Public Test Realm online!

Re: 1.13 Public Test Realm online!

The FE explosion and Gloam lightning "nerfs" are in actual fact bug fixes, so I can't see why anyone would cry over that. Personally, I always hated having to stack lightning resistance on every damn character purely because of Gloams, where I might have otherwise chosen to give more weight to other aspects of my characters. The real disappointment is that they didn't also fix the Inferno bug, which would have made those winged demons much, much more scary (and probably those frozen thingies too), and been an ample compensation for losing overpowered gloams.

My real disappointment is the lack of bug fixes: AR bow bug, inferno bug, CoS bug, HotO Ravens/Peace Valkyrie "poofing" bug, D/A/E bug. Making the game work as intended should, in my view, be a high priority.

I would have also liked to have seen some effort to make some of the useless low level skills a bit more useful (e.g. Raven, Magic Arrow, Bash, Teeth).

As for the IM removal on OKs, I always thought it was a bit unfair on those who, unlike me, like to get up close and personal. In a similar way I've always thought the everything is immune to something approach was unfair on sorcs in particular. Basically, I don't like things which overly punish those who go down the specialisation route. I would love to see immunities disappear, coupled with a significant nerfing of the ability to lower resistances (e.g. cap LR and Conviction at 50%, maybe 1% per level, do the same with CM or switch to a damage boost like the other masteries), so that every build can kill every monster, but some will go down very slowly for those who choose specialisation over versatility. I would do something about Amp Damage (and maybe Decrep too) at the same time - instread of a flat -100%, make it progressive.

On the upside I love the nerfing of cheesydins, more for the thought of all those who will be rather upset by it than anything. I also love the increased rune drop chances. Probably could have went a bit further (to the point where Last Wish became an attainable dream would be a good point to aim for, I mean look at the stats on the thing! Massive damage + Might Aura + CB + ctc Life Tap + ITD + PMH + Blind + Fade = massive amounts of win!).

As for respeccing, I don't really care too much one way or the other, but I suspect the quest reward and item collection routes are both being tested to figure out which is the best way to go in the final patch.

Good news Jason, afaik they only reduced damage done by Gloam uniques/champions - Gloams and Burning Souls, at least in the PTR, are still bugged and scary. :)

*facepalm*

I just thought of something else - I wish they would make it so you could summon wolves and a bear together. A pure summoning Druid is not really a viable build as it currently stands (well it is, but it requires rather a lot of patience and skill point investment for a few summons or even just one), and I doubt even if they allowed 5 Spirit Wolves, 3 Dire Wolves, and a Grizzly all at once whether it would go close to matching a Fishymancer.

Re: 1.13 Public Test Realm online!

I'm excited by some of the things in this patch, and honestly, one of those things is the ability to re-spec. I'm clearly in the minority here, but let me explain:

1. I don't have much wealth, and I probably never will. I have the ability to do runs, but not the willpower. Item farming as fast as I can is absolute tedium to me. That means I can never expect to have certain items/charms/whatever.

Figuring out where I need to place stat/skill points is often frustrating for me. Usually I'm waiting to see what sort of end-game weapon drops (This is worst for Barbarians, not being able to drop the points into a mastery). Other times I place a bunch of points in strength to equip something, and then end up with a bunch of strength-boosting gear.

So when I do stumble upon end-game gear, I like the idea of re-optimizing the build. I'm going to consider that my reward for beating the game.

2. I hate getting off the ground. I'm so sick of Act I-Act III normal, I can't even tell you. Hate it. And a big part of why I hate these acts is that thanks to "careful planning," your character hasn't really come together yet. No mana, 10+ saved up skill points, can't equip decent gear yet... Ugh. Just awful. If I could use whatever that command is that jumps you straight to Act V without becoming a social pariah here, I would.

The re-spec in Nightmare allows you to actually play the game through Normal without having to hate life. I'm going to put points in energy (*gasp*), and not handcuff my enjoyment of the game just so that I can survive better in Hell difficulty. When I get to Nightmare, I'll fix my character, and be ready to face the nice middle-portion of the game (To me, the most enjoyable portion of the game is late normal - nightmare, where you level up frequently, your skills rip through enemies, and you get to watch the build come together).

What's more important to me is the my fiancee will be able to re-spec her characters. It's been pointed out that these changes aren't really aimed at the hardened veterans. Re-specs will allow my woman to make a character, make it her way, experiment with skills, but not be SCREWED when we get to Nightmare and Hell difficulty.

3. Re-building characters that I've messed up (or are otherwise unhappy with) does nothing for me. I've done it, it's a total rehash, and if I'm going to experience the leveling process, I want it to be a new experience. New skills, or at least a new skill progression. Rebuilding a javazon just to avoid the D/A/E skills, or a blizz sorc because she had too much strength and not enough vitality, those were BAD experiences. If I have the option to optimize without starting from scratch, that brings a tear of joy to my eyes.

4. Starting a build at max level doesn't give the experience of playing that build. This goes back to my joy of the mid-levels. I don't worry about re-specs taking away from replayability simply because I wouldn't want to start playing a new character totally maxxed/twinked. There's a reason they're called "builds."

I have other thoughts on the patch, but since the re-specs seem to be the #1 hot topic, I thought I'd sound off on it.

Re: 1.13 Public Test Realm online!

Rhyme,

What you say about the respec makes a lot of sense, in my opinion. I originally was looking at it from the perspective of taking a high level Pat/Mat and re-skilling to something completely different. However, from a new character perspective, using it for levelling and getting a character started makes a lot more sense, and does mean that lesser used skills will get some play time (instead of the twinked rush to 30 for end-game skills).

Re: 1.13 Public Test Realm online!

I didn't even mention how enormously useful that re-spec in normal is. Imagine, there you are, level 5, you get your bonus skill point, and you say, "No no no!!! This is all wrong!!! I don't want 10 in strength, 7 in dexterity, and 8 in vitality!!! I want 8 in strength, 6 in dexterity, and 11 in vitality! Also, I've totally rethought that whole 'point in a cold armor' business. That baby is going straight into warmth. Ahhhhh... Character saved."

I don't disagree with the general consensus that re-specs dumb the game down somewhat, but I felt it necessary to point out that even in this community, not everybody is an elite runner, or an elite hardcore pro (neither of these terms should be taken as derisive. I'm jealous of your wealth and commitment, and I don't look down on it at all), and some of us would appreciate the opportunity to freely optimize the characters we do have. This patch will make my gaming experience a little bit better, and it will make my woman's experience A LOT better... So try to keep us in mind as well. You don't have to be a pre-teen or retarded to like your games a little bit on the easy side.

Re: 1.13 Public Test Realm online!

What rhyme said. Although I've allready said I like the patch. Well, anyway, I've got a little question...

How soon is will we have a final patch? An educated guess anyone?

Re: 1.13 Public Test Realm online!

A good thing with the respec is that you can revitalize your old and broken high level characters again! All those level 90 grandmas and grandpas will get a second chance again.

Re: 1.13 Public Test Realm online!

Ummm. . . it took them a year for the beta version, yes? I vote 2-8 months.*

While I am educated, my guess is based more on dissatisfaction with the current version rather than any direct knowledge of the goings on at Blizzard, except for the fact that they seemingly left the SP community out in the cold. Again.

Re: 1.13 Public Test Realm online!

^ Yeah, and to shove more poo into our faces, our beloved RRM was given to the Cattlenetters too. :( All Blizzard needs to do now is give them some generic form of ATMA/GoMule, and they'll have everything we do.
Wait, they'll still need somehow convert a population of 500,000+ ten to thirty year old players who engage in mindless griefing from morning to night due to the protection of the internet's anonymity into nice people who know when to use "you're" versus "your" versus "ur" versus "u". Yeah, that'll take a long while.

Yeah, I'm somewhat happy about it too.

I'm going to fix my 1.10 Rabies/FC Druid and my 1.10 Bone/Skelliemancer Hybrid.

My Clvl 96 (was not 98 as I remembered, but at least it's 90% done its exp bar :() Windy with 200ish STR and barely any DEX and VIT will also get fixed. :alright:

Since over 50% of my characters were made prior to my 'Enigma', 'CtA', huge pile of uniques, etc., I'm in the process of rebuilding most of them from scratch, including my Hammerdin, Fishyzon, Frenzy Barb, Zerker, etc. Respec might speed things up a bit, but I'm thinking not to go this route, because I actually want to enjoy their journey to Hell.

Lastly, I can rebuild my currently level 60 Frozen Armor/Chilling Armor/Blaze Tanksorc currently stuck in Nightmare...

:D

Re: 1.13 Public Test Realm online!

I'll take the criticism for my too easy comments...with the caveat that 95% of the players still playing the game, especially at this forum are twinking to the gills, and the things that made the game difficult (at times) to those parties have been diminshed with the patch.

It is a difficult game untwinked, and ultimately I may try an older version just to keep my visits to the site more than the dailies and possible trades.

Like I said I hope there is more coming in the final patch, if they add some more items or RWs I'll be tickled pink...

So many comments, most of which could get me banned

I find it interesting that most of the comments I've read in the community forum 1.13 thread are positive, contrary to the posts here. Seems that blizzard may have delivered to their target audience after all...

Yeah! They should make D3 impossible to play single ;)

Re: 1.13 Public Test Realm online!

Meh... I've archived off my 1.12 characters and stashes for a while.... upgraded to 1.13 and am enjoying the crisper Mac OS X graphics whilst starting a handful of HC characters from scratch.

Let's see how it goes.

Re: 1.13 Public Test Realm online!

Checked paladin forum: No thread on 1.13. Curiouser and curiouser.

U

Perhaps now that hammerdins have been nerfed paladins are back to being not too popular, .09 style, and the paladin forum will be deserted but for the occasional Smiter build questions to handle Uber Tristram :scratchchin:
