Etdlahq Memorial Bar - your shelter from forum crashes

I've had a box of sci-fi book for the last twenty-five years or so. It is full of Asimov, Burroughs, Van Vogt, Jack Vance, Jack Williamson, and a number of others; great 60s and 70s pulp sci-fi (with a smidgen of 50s and 80s thrown in for good measure). I cannot get rid of them, but I cannot get into that style of story either. So the box just gets take out a few times a decade, is inspected, and dutifully returned to storage. *sigh*

@TheNix - I wouldn't mind if it were every couple of months, but we reset our modem nightly (housemate doesn't like sleeping with the modem on in her room, so we turn it off before bed. We can only have it connected through a wall in her room, and have considered having a cable going through the house into the hall.) Our IPs get reset every time, so it will always change.

I've been playing a fair bit of Magic Arena lately. I've always enjoyed the concept of the game, and it's quite fun to actually play it. The virtual currency is a huge bonus.

I've been playing it a fair bit too. I played Mtg back when I was in highschool and arena is awesome given you can play ftp.

It's something else. It's the electromagnetic radiation.

em radiation ... really?

I've always liked the idea of MtG, but not the need to buy random cards to build a deck - it's an expensive hobby, - but I've also never had anyone to actually watch or play it with. The artwork, details, intricate synergy design and all is amazing, so love Magic Arena being free to play AND online, with easy ways of earning coins to build decks.
One of my clients who went to PAX was given a deck of MtG cards. They don't play, and offered the deck when I said I saw the cards at their place and have been interested, but they may've gotten rid of them. I haven't seen them for a long time, but went through each card for the artwork and description.

I started slowly with building a basic red deck that gave good results, and have seen some black cards I want to try to incorporate into it. But it's so hard to find the right number of lands, as my luck in cards is just (and has always been,) so unbalanced. Most of the time, with 20/60 (1/3) Lands, I've drawn 10 lands in a row, or had a hand with 5 lands, and only drawn more land. Alternatively, there's the mana drought... I seem to come across that more than I should have, statistically.
So I'm trying to fine-tune my Red/Black deck as I get new cards. I think it's reasonably strong, but some of the games have been so close and really challenging. Others... Have been absolutely shocking due to the random luck factor.

As to the router emitting radiation, I somewhat agree with her, but it's a very low priority for me, and there's mixed research - most of the research I saw previously was from someone selling anti-radiation screens and shields, who was clearly promoting fear to the audience to trigger them to buy protective equipment. I still agree with it to a point. There's so much electromagnetic radiation and electronic devices nowadays, but it's the day and age we live in. My bigger concern is when an infant in a pram is given a mobile device, AND knows how to use it, and is exposed at such an early developmental age (physically, mentally and composition,) throughout their lifespan. I've had extremely poor eye-sight for my life, but with infants being given "distractions" to hold at a tiny distance from their eyes for so long, at every opportunity, the muscles in the eyes won't develop as well to focus at a range as they grow. And poor long distance eye-sight (short-sightedness and the need for glasses/contacts/surgery) is becoming more prevalent in young people.
But, I respect her choices there, and the modem is unfortunately in her room, so we turn it off at night, resetting our IP. Maybe eventually we'll get a cable and put it in the hall, but it's something we work around at the moment.

I've played my share of MtG and still regularly play it, though with very old decks that get hardly ever updated. Since it is indeed expensive.

I like red decks to, they are mostly quick aggro and have a whole lot of cheap ass creatures to throw at the oponent.
I've always played 60 with 20 mana sources it beeing lands or creatures that could be sacrificed for mana, I also made sure some lands had a special, like 'search for a forest or mountain card and put it in to play tapped then shuffle your deck.' if you have some dual lands like taiga you can search that one. or 'Sacrifice this land and destroy target land.' tap it for mana then sacrifice it and take out an openents land.

I will certainly be playing arena once I have a gaming rig again.

I played MtG once. Someone let me use a green deck and I accidentally beat someone really good. So that was it. One and done baby!

Make a deck, then vs a friend. :)

My combo red/black deck could be amazing IF everything lined up. But it's almost impossible to get it working that way. But there are numerous other win strategies IF they line up. The challenge is that there are so many hard counters to what I try to get going, that some cards just hard shut it down.

This was a very close game, which I thought I lost. His deck was a BLUE CONTROL/MILL deck. Lots of counter spells which ruined most of my attempts at casting creatures, and Sphinx's Tutelage to mill me out.
- I had a card that lets me place a Duplicate Token of the creature played with Haste for one RED MANA. So, I play a creature with HASTE without playing my RED MANA from my hand first, in order to rush his health down. But the duplicate didn't trigger, and I shortly realised it used all my red mana to cast the creature, while I was still holding a red mana to play... That mistake almost cost me the game.
- His turn, he mills me down to 3 cards, and then he leaves the game, leaving me confused.
- My turn, and I play the last few that I needed and look through my cards. One of my creatures had Menace, so he could only block one or the other, not both my creatures.

I love how much detail there is in the game. You have to really pay attention to what the cards do, and how they interact, as there are so many tiny details that easily get overlooked.

@Kitteh: We all have too little time.

That's why I love my food chain goblin deck so much.
A dozen win possibilities but if everything lines up its a first turn kill if I go second, second turn kill if I go first.
I hope I can recreate something like it in Arena.
In this deck I either win with the combo of food chain, goblin recruiter and goblin ringleader. Bringing about 20ish goblins into play on turn 1 or 2 (or later).
Another win possibility is just playing so much goblins and overwhelm the opponent.
If you get a Zo-zu the punisher real early you make it a hard decision for your opponent to play a land and take 2 damage or play no land.
Siege gang commander with it's tokens and you can launch them for 2 damage.
Krenko, mob boss doubles your goblins every turn.
Plus a bunch of other helpfull goblins and special lands or elvish spirit guide to help with mana.
So either hand you get, will let you do something that might help you win.

Yeah 1/2 turn kills are not possible on Arena. Arena works is predominantly Standard (Type 2 in the old vernicular) and hence the cards are not as broken as they used to be.

*protects Blue tongue lizards*

I saw my first bluey of the season yesterday at the beach. Great to see them out and about.

*Also protects our eastern brown snakes; tiger snakes can look after themselves...*

Magic Arena is rough. Using only my Red deck, I got to... I don't know what to call it. You get +1 score for a win, -1 for a loss. So I got to rank/score ~27 with my plain red deck, although it wasn't consistent. But when I added Red/Black, my score dropped to the teens. And now I've made a beginner Blue Mill deck, and I'm down to score 3-6... Even with 34% mana, I regularly get mana-drought, drawing up to 7 hands (over two games) with under 2 mana! And the next game, 5 mana cards in a row, after starting with a hand of 4 mana/3 spells.
