What IS D2 to you?
Something I wondered about after seeing some "_____ is a core gameplay aspect of Diablo!" remarks in various D3 threads. To you, what is Diablo 2? What do you consider to be the core gameplay? What do you think is a great part of it, and what do you think was done poorly in your view of what the game is?
To me, Diablo 2 is primarily an action game, with tons of variety coming from the addition of RPG elements. I love when a character can fight more effectively depending on how they use their skills rather than simply boosting stats and skills high enough to brute force everything.
The greatest parts of the game are the battles with Diablo and the Ancients, since you need to be actively engaged instead of just taping down your attack button.
The worst parts are places like the Maggot Lair where you don't have much choice besides brute force. Also the endgame's excessive reliance upon super rare, but super powerful items.
