Unfinished Business Sept -- Progress Thread

After my 7x7+2 and untwinked 99ers, there are still some builds I've wanted to make or rebuild with better gear. My Runeword Bonanza Sept provided an outlet for one Sept's worth, and the 2H Melee Sept is providing another. But there were still some longstanding builds on my to-do list that I wanted to get through and didn't fit into those projects. Hence, the Unfinished Business Sept, which has overtaken the 2H Melee Sept in terms of progress, with 5 of 7 complete and the sixth in Hell.

So I figured a Sept thread was warranted and would help provide motivation to finish this project up, as breaks for XP runs with my untwinked 99er Druid who is moving again. There aren't real rules for this Sept, except as per my usual, all characters will full clear A85 areas. Due to build and gear choices, some will drop to p1 in Hell, so no p-setting restriction here. Updates on the last two characters will be posted here, and Mat/Pat links for the others are below. A high-level summary of the build/gear concept for each class is below, with more detail on each (including impressions for completed characters) following that.

  • Assassin – Fleshripper Kicker with Dual Dreams (Matriarch Blade, Level 83, 10/2/21, MP)
  • Barbarian – Cow King BarBearian with Last Wish and HF Infinity Merc (Patriarch Ursine_Bovine, Level 82, 4/2/21)
  • Druid – Earthshifter Fury Druid with Reaper Might Merc (Patriarch Aldur, Level 86, 4/15/21)
  • Necromancer – Bone Necro with Might Insight Merc (Patriarch McCoy, Level 84, 4/5/22)
  • Paladin – Ice Ranger with Conviction Aura and Faith Rogue (Patriarch Craft, Level 81, 3/27/22)
  • Sorceress – Chain Lightning/FO Sorc with Insight Merc (Matriarch MFO, Level 83, 10/9/21)
We finished up Craft after my Untwinked 99er Druid pinged in early March, and also had leveled the Necro to A1 NM. Once the Pally Pat'ed, we pushed the Necro through NM and then posted Mat/Pat threads for the Sorc and Pally. And then finished up the Necro.

Amazon
Gear: Windforce, fun rare gloves and boots, razortail, Fortitude, Kira's, Atma's for amp, Harmony switch

I hadn't found Windforce during my 7x7+2, and never revisited the Windforce strafer once that item dropped. I had used as backup for my Ice Ice Maiden, but the real deal was fun to make from scratch and quest through. She was p5 through A4H, and dropped to p3 to finish. Very powerful, no deaths, and the merc also was sturdy with few deaths. Gear could have been min-maxed, but it was fun to use rares.

Assassin
Gear: Fleshripper, Dual Dream, Trang's gloves for poison % damage, otherwise standard kicker

This is another build I'd thought about making but didn't have gear during 7x7+2 to make happen. Mainly, the Fleshripper was missing. Yes, the lack of synergy for Dream Holy Shock is limiting, but dual Dream is very solid on its own, and fast DTalon with the lightning damage and crushing blow and other mods from weapon and boots is quite strong even without Infinity. The Confuse from Dreams is great crowd control to boot. I really enjoyed her, especially after several years of wondering how this build would turn out. Because I played her in an all ladies MP group, Infinity wasn't available, and she more than held her own. But once the Infinity merc was swapped in after Mat'ing, it was even more powerful as expected.

Barbarian
Gear: Last Wish/Beast, dual HotO switch, Cow King set, other gear to fill gaps

This was a really fun playthrough and a character that I am quite proud of. I love Cow King set, and it's my go-to twinking option for melee characters for Normal into NM. My 7x7 focused on using all Elite sets, so I didn't actually use this a set to build around end-game. Last Wish is a fun item to have and use, and worked well for my Runeword Bonanza Frenzier, and why not go with Beast to shift and get the aura on offhand? So the dual mammal build was born. As noted in the write up, Last Wish didn't work as well for him, with blind target overriding life tap, and the Phase Blade had limited damage. But at p1, it was very fun and engaging for the playthrough.

Druid
Gear: Standard Earthshifter Fury Druid, per Liquid_Evil's guide.

Meh? It was a pretty classic build, and centered around a cool item. But I'm definitely looking forward to the eTomby Fire Mauler in my 2H Melee Sept much more compared to this guy. So it was fun to tick this one off, but I was also happy to finish him up.

Necromancer
Gear: ? I'm pretty sure I have a nice 3 Bone Spear 2os wand with decent secondary mods, but I haven't checked carefully yet. But otherwise, I finally have a full backpack of Fungal GCs, which I didn't have for the Bone Necro in my 7x7. I'm hoping this one is stronger and can keep up at least a p3 setting through Hell.

This is a build I have wanted to revisit after my underwhelming experience during my 7x7. This was the only Necro Pat that I didn't thoroughly enjoy, and I had chalked it up to limited + skills. Hopefully the full skiller backpack and more experience with using Bone Prison effectively makes for a fun playthrough.

Paladin
Gear: Ice Bow, Dream helm, Razortail, CoH, Mara's, rare gloves and boots

I built the Ice in the Shadow Bow with this guy in mind. I'm hoping it's a fun playthrough, likely on p1 the whole way. My last ranger was abandoned due to tedium on single target and lack of crowd control, but I think the balance of offense and defense here will work well.

Sorceress
Gear: Griffon's, Fathom, Vipermagi, CtA Switch, +skill options and 117 FCR

She was not as much fun as I remembered from my experience with this build from the 7x7, even with stronger gear. I think also at this point that I don't find Sorcs as fun for playthroughs, due to ability to teleport through, and challenge of discipline not to do so. I definitely found myself moving quickly to finish her up, even needing to go back to complete full clears for A85 areas. But she went through on p5 the whole way, and was plenty powerful dual element Sorc.

I finished the 'Ice' Pally Ranger on Sunday , so finally getting around to post the Mat for MFO, the Sorc in this Sept, and then Craft, the Ranger. Neither character was super exciting, so I didn't think they warranted a standalone Mat/Pat thread, so putting them directly here. The Necro is at the Anya rescue in NM, so he'll be into Hell for the weekend. I'm enjoying him quite a bit, with a fun mix of gear, and he might end up finishing up this weekend. We'll see . . .
 
Matriarch MFO, Chain Lightning/Frozen Orb Sorc

This Sorc was the fifth character in my Unfinished Business Sept, another Sept to revisit builds from my 7x7 with better gear or tick off another build variant that I haven't done. MFO was a character that I rushed through NM to get two personalization quests to make two prizes for MFO 2020. I then picked her up last fall and respec'ed to CL/FO, a build that had been my favorite from the 7 sorcs in my 7x7.

I had thought it would be quite fun based on what I remembered from the prior one, but even more powerful due to better gear to choose from now. It was a little disappointing, I think likely because the number of playthroughs I've done at this point compared to back then. She was solid on p5 with no deaths, and I tried to limit teleporting through, but I was definitely ready to finish her off when I got to A5 Hell.

Hell HF was a Hel, and nothing much of note dropped, except these cute rare gloves:

I skipped Infinity to make sure I used both skills for the immunes and because Insight is nice, and maybe the Infinity would have been a better choice for excitement. But this build is quite strong, and I think the main issue for me was that the nostalgia expectation was a bit too high :D

This Pally was the sixth character in my Unfinished Business Sept, another Sept to revisit builds from my 7x7 with better gear or tick off another build variant that I haven't done.

I had been planning to rebuild a Ranger for some time after I abandoned my first attempt from the 7x7 due to tedium of left-click only ranged single target attack. As mentioned elsewhere, I built my first 'Ice' in a non-Zon bow and used it on my Frost Maiden, specifically because of my plan to build the Ranger around it (and for use on Mercs):

Craft himself was a character that I'd played through A2NM in the Orange You Glad That Rune Dropped crafting tourney, but retired because I'd mistakenly created him in SC and couldn't muster the motivation to finish him out if he wouldn't get Guardian to complete my HC Tourney Sept. So I dusted him off for this purpose, blitzing quickly through NM to reach lvl 65 and be able to equip the Ice bow. I then equipped the bow, did two NM Baal runs, and set forth into Hell.

The build concept was the Ice, with HF synergies, Dream helm with HS synergy, Conviction for high-radius boost to elemental damage, CoH for skills and resists and some fun rares to balance out resists, and Sharp charms for solid physical damage nad some AR boost to ensure everything hit. Razortail provided some pierce.

It worked as planned, with Faith from the merc allowing fast firing, and he was plenty strong at p1 with no deaths. The confuse from Dream provided crowd control when needed and really rounded out the build, along with the Returned spawns from the Merc's Faith. The faster walk allowed him to be very mobile and line up his shots from good vantage, with the occasional pierce and frost novas provided some fun graphics. I bumped up to p3 a few times, but the kiting that became necessary on ocassion wasn't what I was after.

All the same, the single target left-click still was a drag; if it were possible to swap aura to left click and normal to right, this guy would have been a blast, and I'd likely have played through at p5. Hell HF was a Gul, which was fun, and the Ancients were something of a challenge due to unbreakable LI and CI rolls and the A1 mercs AI making it hard to separate them. But it eventually happened:

McCoy, 'White' Bone Spear Necro with Insight Might Merc, Level 72, Act 1 Hell
Alright, the last character in this Sept is now to Hell. It turned out I had two 2os +3 Bone Spear wands, but they were both in HC. But Craft lucked out and found 3 BS/3 Attract/1 Summon Resist Wand that got 2 sockets at Larzuk and was equippable at lvl 48:

He got another White wand at lvl 35, and was standard melee twinking gear up until Spirit sword, when he made the switch to bone spear. The merc was also solid as always. He was sitting in A1 NM when I finished Craft last weekend, and he made it through A1 NM through last night and then the rest of NM today.

I didn't want to sink 156 strength, so looked at options, and realized it would be fun to actually use Darkforce (I have one +3 P&B skills option), which he was able to equip near the start of A5 NM. He is actually at the 125 FCR breakpoint with Darkforce, White, SoVM, Trang's gloves, a caster belt, and a 17FCR amulet. With a backpack full of P&B skillers, he is at 46 BS, which is quite powerful.

He has revives (7) and skeletons (4) as his crowd control, rather than needing to worry with bone prison. I am finding it more enjoyable to not need to un-summon the prison, although I still have it hot-keyed in case we encounter a real challenge in Hell. Looking at his set up, I don't think the 125 breakpoint is really worth it, especially given how stretched he is on resists (I ditched the cube to allow some Shimmering charms to keep him >50@ in Hell). So he will likely swap out the ammy and belt for Mara's and likely Verdungo's or a rare with FHR. I will also look at other glove options because that FCR isn't needed, but the +2 curses is still helpful for radius on Amp.

I'm planning to keep him at p3, and likely p5 for A1 and A2 at least. He's very powerful, and I'm finding him enjoyable and the challenge of lots of hotkeys depending on needs has been fun. I'm hoping to finish him up this weekend, but we'll see how the higher p-setting affects time for each Act.
