U consider ATMA storing cheating?

Heya,
Just wondering what is your opinion in this matter:
In my opinion, muling stuff found by one char to other char just to make a build work better is playing unfairly. But one of the faults i found on D2 is the storing space. So i found to be fair to use ATMA just for an extra storage space AND JUST for the char u are playing..

What are your toughts about this?
(sorry if this was debated previosly, but i coulnd't find nothing pointing to this issue... if there is please give me the link)

Thanks!

It all depends on your stance towards twinking really. I use the Storage feature in ATMA to mule off items, but I don't move them back onto the characters I found them with, as I like being completely untwinked. I'm doing that so that I can give away items to people who do twink once I'm done with them. I figure its better for someone to get use out of it rather than just deleting it.

No i just consider it a time-saver for me =D, because i could do exactly what atma does with my two computer connected by LAN and a crap load of mules lol but atma saves you all that time and keeps everything organized and easy to find and get to =D

-K69 (just my 2 cents =D)

I'm sure this has been debated long before my time here on the forum, but I have no problem with it. ATMA is THE major reason I'm playing D2 again. Just the chance to put together characters with uber gear for once is worth it to me. Prevents the old boredom from setting in. I have nothing but respect for the non-twinkers, especially in Hardcore. It's just not my particular cup of tea. :)

I think almost everyone here on the forum consider ATMA really helpful for single player and don't consider it cheating. The use you make of it is yours and you decide in what way you want to use it, as long as it doesn't interfere with other people's game.

ATMA provides an option to mule. If you want to play untwinked you can. If you dont mind muling, with ATMA you can too.

Muling is done as well on battle.net since you always find items that would be great for another character. I find the purist route the most fun since any item in the game can be better then what you use now. It gets a bit boring if you just build a character to equip it with your uber gear and powergame it through normal and nightmare using the best low uniques and sets available by muling.

Its all about options. ATMA provides some important choices there, no one forces you to use it.

ATMA is what made SP a fun experience for me, and what allowed me to get away from the realms with all the rushing, PK'ing (HC), idiocy and lag. (I still occasionally play HCL, though.) Needless to say, I don't consider using ATMA cheating, since all of the items in its database were found by the same player (me), and it's me playing the game, not my characters. ;) I do start untwinked pet projects every once in a while, just for a challenge, but I find 1.10 Hell rather demanding for solo, especially if you do not only play cookie cutters, even if you do mule.

But it's a matter of preference. The beauty of SP is that you can do whatever you want, without ruining the game for others (or having it ruined by others). I'd not cheat, because I quite enjoy the game and want to continue to get fun out of it (and I'd be bored after three days if I cheated), but if someone wants to do that, I don't mind. What I do mind is cheating and exploiting on the closed realms.

It's just because there a situations, and specially to an hardcore players like me, in wich i could give my right arm for that item that i had to throw away a couple of quests ago just bcause i ran out of the already tiny storage space.
(I really consider this a serious defect of the game. We could ask Meshif or Warrif for some lease space on their caravans and ships, or buy a donkey, or whatever... everything is better than that "purse" they call stash)

The one single thing I don't understand about atma is this: it has a dupe detector now, why doesn't it automatically delete dupes? Is there some good that could come of allowing people to have two of the same item?

Other than that yeah, I wouldn't be playing D2 without ATMA.

For the record, I know of at least one person who actively *uses* ATMA to dupe. He's not on this forum though, so no worries about trading.

I just dont think 'stash space' should be your limiting factor in this game as it is now. It should not be a quest for inventory management. Most of my untwinked wont mule however, so I know the feeling. If you decide to play untwinked, dont use ATMA for those characters other then to move away items, just never mule towards the character (lets say you find a zod with an untwinked sorc.. quite useless and best muled away).

If you play twinked (the general battle.net style) ATMA is your solution.

I remeber back in the 09 days when i played close bnet. When i allways needed someone to help me muling or some of my friends needed help with it. Now in single player thanks to atma i can mule on my own, and again i like to twink heavy.

arrrgh! not another one of these!

is there even a point to this debate. :grrr:

uuu....i'm using an optic mouse, does that makes me a cheater since i can target better in my games? :innocent:

I HATE my optic mouse. Its a M$ branded one and a gift from my girlfriend so I cant just ditch it without severe consequences. But the pointer jumps to a corner often while playing and it almost killed me a few times (and I normally play HC). So dont get me started on that one ! O wait, you already did....

Well, I guess it depends on how you define the word 'cheating'.

If you go by the rules Blizzard has established for non-Bnet/SP, then practictically nothing is considered cheating. If you go by the rules established for B-net, then it is a third party program that gives its user an advantage over a nonuser, so it is cheating. So a lot depends on how strict your interpretation of 'cheating' is.

As far as twinking goes, Bilzzard does not consider it cheating. They make a statement that twinking 'is not supported'. And that the limited stash size is an intentional design feature. But twinking is definitely an intended part of the game. Otherwise there would be no point to allow 'looting' of HC characters. And in describing this feature they specifically mention recovering the items from your dead HC character for use on other characters. Muling/twinking is an intentionally risky activity, so a program, like ATMA's, that makes it safe and easy is clearly giving its user an advantage. Once again, muling/twinking is a personal decision, everyone can play it however they want and everyone is right on the topic, for their own gaming.

Personally, I use ATMA's, and I consider it to be a cheat. Just as I use information extracted from the game program (FCR breakpoints, weapon speed breakpoints, etc.), even though doing so is cheating from a strict interpretation.

Official forum stance: Using ATMA is not cheating (settled after much tears and bloodshed. If you think the rune wars were ill tempered you weren't around last year from the Great Forum Combustion of 2003).

However within the SPF there is a great variety in playing styles. Some people twink a lot, some people not at all. There are probably people who don't use ATMA at all. I know there are some purists who don't use ATMA because it allows you to retain maps (since muling via TCP/IP requires you to reset the map). It's a tool, and its entirely up to you how you choose to use it.

This is what I use Atma for:

I mule off gems and runes only into a separate stash for each of my characters. I mule uniques and sets that I don't use into a HC Grail that I have. I help my brother(4 yrs older than me) to twink to his heart's content. Besides, without twinking you wouldn't have the wonders of flaming rabies or a wolfBarb builds. It's just a choice that you have to make. I personally don't twink my HC characters but have no problem twinking my SC ones.
