With Diablo 3 around the corner - and without PvP in a foreseeable future - I think it’s
the right time and last chance to try bringing some more players to the SPF PvP Scene
and maybe even starting something more regular - and hoping that we can continue
to duel here and there for a long time.


Why PvP?


It’s a LOT of fun, it pumps you full with adrenaline, it’s a great excuse to make some
awesome characters and one more cool thing you can do with Diablo 2!

Rules



It goes without saying that first you have to comply with the SPF rules with special
attention to those that can make you not eligible to MP/Trading.


Everyone can play with several sets of rules:


[highlight]RS0[/highlight] - No rules at all!!! If it’s legit you can use it!
Not usual but it can be great for some fun and trolling times!


[highlight]RS1[/highlight] - Standard Bad Mannered Rules
Taken from the PvP Guide and those we’ve been following the last years:


The rules most commonly used nowadays are intended to prevent inherent imbalances in classes becoming too dominant and leading to too many one sided matches. Obviously this doesn't always occur, and it is still possible to completely negate attacks under these rules, but in general if it’s just a standard game don’t stack and absorb someone to the point that their damage becomes insignificant. Save that sort of thing for tournaments. They’re fairly comparable to what’s being regarded as GM in public games on Battle.net, with a couple of exceptions, the main ones being the bans on Decrepify, Bone Prison and recasting Cyclone and Bone Armour.

No potions (except mana potions), mercs, wells, or shrines.
No recasting Cyclone and Bone Armour.
No minions that cannot be summoned in town with the exception of Decoy.
No Holy Freeze, Decrepify, Slow Missiles, or Bone Prison.
No mass slow (>10%), no mass poison from items (>200), no mass replenish (>25).
No curse charges (this includes Slow Missiles). Chance to cast is acceptable.
No over absorb. Limit 2 items per element with the standard ban on Rising Sun and Black Oak.
Mana potions are allowed for all characters except ES based sorcs


[highlight]RS2[/highlight] - SPF ‘14 PvP Rules
After some discussing along this thread we agreed on a set of rules:


General PvP rules
1. Mana potions are allowed for all classes (except for the ES sorceress).
1. a) It is allowed to drop potions in front of blood moor entrance. Same applies to arrows.
2. No minions that cannot be summoned in town with the exception of Decoy.
3. Replenish life is capped at 50.
4. Slow is capped at 10%.
5. Poison damage from charms is not capped at all.

Skills
6. Banned skill are: Slow Missiles, Holy Freeze, Meditation, Prayer, Cleansing, Iron Maiden, Decrepify, Bone Prison, Life Tap and Clay Golem. Those skills are banned in any form or shape, regardless of their source. (Doom, Exile, Lawbringer etc)
6. a) Items containing banned skills charges aren't banned but using those charges is. (Marrowwalks, Sanctuary etc)
7. Cold Mastery is capped at one point only for Blizzard sorceress class.
8. All charges from items are allowed, with exception of banned skills. (Oak from Hoto is allowed, Wolves from Crescent moon are allowed)
8. a) Lower resists from wand charges is only allowed in team duels.
9. No recasting Cyclone Armor.

Absorb
10. Maximum resists are capped at 85 without any absorb.
11. 75 resists + 20% absorb is allowed, 80 resists + 12% sorb is allowed.
12. Two Ravenfrosts are allowed as long as you have 175 cold resists or less.
13. Banned items: 1.07 LoH, Rising Sun, Blackoak Shield, Hotspurs, Thundergods Vigor.
14. Resistance stack is not counted as absorb.

Prebuff
15. Call to arms can be used from stash for all classes (no buffing with any additional items, including shields; just gear you use)
16. ES can be prebuffed with maximum two items
17. Prebuff is fine for low tier pvp characters (Cold armor sorcs, wolfbarbs, fuzzydodgers etc)


[highlight]RS3[/highlight] - Old GM Rules
Not used often, posted here for completeness:


Equipment Rules
* Bugged, hacked or duped items cannot be used – 1.07 crafted items are included in this category.
* All “1.07/1.08 vita” items like Arkaine’s Valor, Harlequin’s Crest, Baranar’s Star and Gerke’s Sanctuary are not allowed. The 1.09 or 1.10 versions of these items are acceptable, however.
* Items with the “Slows Target by X%” modifier are not allowed on physical-damage attackers (for example, Cleglaw’s Claw or Blackhorn’s Face). A caster character like a Necromancer or Sorceress, however, can use Blackhorn’s Face or other items with the “Slows Target by X%” modifier if they want.
* Items with the “Knockback” modifier are not allowed on any character class. Skills that provide a knockback effect (for example, Smite, Bash, Charge or Leap Attack) are still allowable.
* Total Life Replenish from items and skills combined is limited to 25.
* Poison damage is limited to 200 from items, per player. Poison damage from skills (for example, Venom or Poison Nova) is allowed in any amount.
* All duellers may use items that provide auras, with the exception of the “Doom” runeword as it provides the Holy Freeze aura.
* Each character is only allowed to wear two sources of +max resist/absorb per element. For poison, Poison Length Reduction gear will count as absorb. For example, you may wear 2 Ravenfrosts or 1 Ravenfrost and a Guardian Angel, but not 2 Ravenfrosts and a Guardian Angel. Items like Thundergod's Vigor with both +max resist and absorb will count as both of your two sources for that element, so you may not wear Thundergod's Vigor in conjunction with another item that provides +max resist lightning, +max resist all, or +lightning absorb. Finally, putting points into the paladin's passive resist skills will count as a source of +max resist.
* The Rising Sun amulet is not allowed on any character class.
* Blackoak Luna is not allowed on any character class.


Faster Run/Walk Restrictions
Maximum of 110% frw combined from skills, gear, and charms. For example, a Barbarian with 30% frw from Increased Speed can have no more than 80% frw from gear and charms. The skills that give frw are Frenzy, Feral Rage, Increased Speed, Vigor, and Burst of Speed. If you're going to be using any of these skills, plan your frw accordingly.


Banned Skills
The following skills are not to be used at any stage of a duel. They may have points invested in them as a pre-requisite for higher-tier skills or for synergy benefits.
* Lifetap
* Amplify Damage
* Iron Maiden
* Bone Prison (Necromancer)
* Decrepify (Necromancer)
* Blessed Hammer and Concentration at the same time (Paladin)
* Holy Bolt (Paladin)
* Holy Freeze (Paladin)
* Blaze (Sorceress)
* Teleport (Sorceress)
These items may not be used in the form of class skills, o-skills granted by items, charges, or chance to cast when striking.


Skill Restrictions
The following skills are capped or have limitations regarding their use in duels.
* Bone Armour (Necromancer) - It cannot be cast more than once per duel.
* Cyclone Armour (Druid) - It cannot be cast more than once per duel.


[highlight]Melee[/highlight] - A good brawl is great for the bones!

Rules
Soft rules are intended for friendly, open session melee PvP games. If using these rules for a tournament, only the Hard Rules apply.


The Soft Rules
- Play to the spirit of the rules, not the letter.
- WW Barbs and Smiters are banned by default, but if you want to join a game for some BvB duelling on The Cold Plains for example, you may. If you want to duel with other melee builds you may, if you ask first and get agreement from the other players in the game.


The Hard Rules
Both the Standard BM Rules and the Melee PvP Rules apply.


Standard BM Rules
The standard BM Rules all apply as usual:
- No potions (except mana potions), mercs, wells, or shrines.
- No recasting Cyclone and Bone Armour.
- No minions that cannot be summoned in town with the exception of Decoy.
- No Holy Freeze, Decrepify, Slow Missiles, or Bone Prison.
- No mass slow (>10%), no mass poison from items (>200), no mass replenish (>25).
- No curse charges (this includes Slow Missiles). Chance to cast (ctc) is acceptable.
- No over absorb. Limit 2 items per element with the standard ban on Rising Sun and Black Oak. Mana potions are allowed for all characters except ES based sorcs


Melee PvP Rules
- Duel take place in Nightmare.
- Faster Run/Walk (FRW) is capped at 110 total from skills and equipment.
- Teleport is banned for all classes.
- All ranged attacks are banned. This includes mind blast.
- Only a single elemental aura type may be active at one time. Conviction is allowed in combination with elemental auras, as long as there is only a single elemental aura active.
- Rabies, Smite and Whirlwind (Barbarian's) are banned by default, but see Soft Rules section above.
- Whirlwind is allowed for Assassins.
- Life Tap is banned, including from Chance to Cast.


[highlight]LLD[/highlight] - Low Level Dueling
Quoting jdkerr here:


What are the rules?


Well, characters obviously cannot be higher than lvl30. We also prohibit glitch-rushing your character through the game, so characters cannot have completed any quests past "Normal" difficulty. For practical purposes, there is no reason to complete any quests past the first one in Act 4 Normal.


Beyond that, I think we use the standard SPF PvP ruleset:


-- No potions (except mana potions), mercs, wells, or shrines.
-- No recasting Cyclone and Bone Armour.
-- No minions that cannot be summoned in town with the exception of Decoy.

(I am not sure if the absorb rules are relevant, actually, since most of the absorb gear cannot be equipped at lvl30. There is a problem with fire sorb, though. Do we just ban any resists over 75%? I did not find anything in the last thread. Any ideas?)



Item restrictions



Apart from those in the rules there isn't usually any item restriction.
Since ATMA Bugged items still split SPF’s opinions and the same can be said, in a lower
degree, for bringing forward items from older versions or characters levelled in older
versions, if you'd prefer dueling without it feel free to let the other players know.
That way they can swap characters or some items.

All of my characters are built for RS1, but I would love to try some GM teleportless dueling.

If you really want to be complete with the different rule sets, what about the melee-duels rule set?

@pyro: if you want to play GM duels, let´s do GM duels, I think that it provide a lot of fun and GM tournament I played years ago was very nice and there was lot of fun but rules must be very ballanced like that time e.g. btw. most nice of that rules were: no items with runes higher then Vex, max 4-5 skillers in inventory and no mana potions

from my side, I would like to play PvP a lot to the future, I agree with nulio
during June I am going to move to new flat where my connection will be good and I will be able to play each day so it is good chance for me

I have lot of characters made for RS1 with IR1 restrictions but I can easily switch for IR2 items because I more agree with IR2 and unique item from IR1 I am possesing is 1.10s CtA but I have no problem with IR1 at all, not even big problems with IR0, it is your minus to have ATMA bugged items, at least I will be more cool to beat you without them :p
Another set of characters I have for PvP are my old good which are made for RS3

@pyro: if you want to play GM duels, let´s do GM duels, I think that it provide a lot of fun and GM tournament I played years ago was very nice and there was lot of fun but rules must be very ballanced like that time e.g. btw. most nice of that rules were: no items with runes higher then Vex, max 4-5 skillers in inventory and no mana potions

Having no runes above Vex would have been a budgetary restriction to expand the audience at a time when runes were very scarce. I don't think it serves as much benefit in the era of cheap runes. I guess that it would eliminate all of the powerful runewords, but then I would only have two characters that would work.
I'm game, though, lets go for it some time.

Removing CTA will just make duels faster as it will halve everyone's life. Longer duels have more strategy which should be encouraged.

I can see how smiters and bowazons would have a great and possibly insurmountable advantage in such a format, but wouldn't banning the skills smite and guided arrow be a much more appropriate fix? In the BM ruleset bowazons are a third-tier build in 1v1 but a first tier build in team games. With GM ruleset and no teleport they would become top tier 1v1, but that it much more a function of the how the skill guided arrow operates not a single piece of equipment. The same reasoning applies even more strongly to smite which is fundamentally a bugged and broken skill.

I think that the GM ruleset with the additional bannings of the skills guided arrow and smite is what would provide interesting balance to the duels.

Most of my characters could go IR2 if I made a 1.13d CtA.


Whilst I'm not really a fan of ATMA bugging (I have done it though) I don't think there should be a subset of rules that is unique to PvP when it comes to items. I don't really think IR1 should be considered, it is too confusing.


I'm open to a ruleset discussion, but I would like to know what specific problems that are seen with the current rules have before we rush into changing details. I'm adverse to anything that makes the rules more complicated. I don't want to be doing calculations in a Excel spreadsheet to work out how much resistance stack & absorb I am allowed.

The barb uses eth-bugged Grief/Beast, the rest are IR1 as I only have a beta CtA, they could all be IR2 other than that. However, I don't play often anymore, so chances of me complying with IR2 are approximately zero.

Edit: Also, absorb rules probably do need looking at, I vaguely recall some questions from when I posted the PvP guide around them, and to be fair it is very easy to negate fire and lightning damage compared to cold with the current rules. Then again, people could just be sensible and use an amount of absorb that's fun, it's not like there have been any tournaments with big prizes recently.

You don't lose experience. HC death is permanent though.

Not going to touch the build thing otherwise but I think you should pick a build you find the most interesting. They don't need godly gear to work.

I'll keep the IR for now, if in the following months nobody ever asks to duel in IR1 or IR2 I'll drop the IR and just add a note to simplify.

The idea is to limit possibility of over sorb. "Max two sorb items" is too general and allows for example 95LR + 20sorb. Poison also works differently in Hell where basically we all have -100PLR, so poison has advantage (if we agree that poison skills and other elemental ones are balanced).
Example of new rule:
Max L/R/C: 95 Lite/Fire/Cold Res 0 Lite/Fire/Cold Sorb, 90 Lite/Fire/Cold Res 10 Lite/Fire/Cold Sorb, 85 Lite/Fire/Cold Res 20 Lite/Fire/Cold Sorb, 80 Lite/Fire/Cold Res 30 Lite/Fire/Cold Sorb, 75 Lite/Fire/Cold Res 40 Lite/Fire/Cold Sorb.
Max P: 95 Poison Res 100 PLR, 90 Poison Res 125P LR, 85 Poison Res 150 PLR, 80 Poison Res 175 PLR and 75 Poison Res 200 PLR.

Wanted to hear opinions about lifetap and CtC lifetap. Same about smite.

And allowing curse charges? For someone to use it they would cripple the switch (unless we think that having wand on inventory is feasible)

The idea is to PvP whenever someone wants to :) And hope that happens with some regularity.
When most players have more time we can try making tournaments/pvp weeks.

I didn't play at that time but I'd say that teleport is banned in GM because those rules are from a time when enigma was a luxury only some could afford, so sorceresses would have big advantage. Since those rules also limit FRW (cause of desync or to have a different kind of gameplay?) teleport would be even more imba. I'm curious to know how sorceresses would fare back then.

Nice charms are usually the hardest part in most PvP (and PvM) builds. But you can have nice chars with normal charms.
Blizzard is strong with or without ES. The first will have stronger blizzard but will be more glass-cannon'y.
The ES ormus in janooo give-away has a facet in case the recipient prefers to try FO instead of Blizzard. Since there's no FO ormus but ormus is still best choice, ES' one allows you spend less time pre-buffing.

Like kimppi stated there's no XP penalty if you are killed by another player - only if a monster kills you. That's one of the reasons why we kill all monsters before dueling.

For general BM dueling smite is powerful, but not impossibly unbalanced. Smite becomes inbalanced when there is no teleport so everyone is fighting much closer together. Paladins also have charge to close the distance with any other class so smite becomes inbalanced. It is already banned in the melee dueling rules. I propose also banning it from the GM ruleset where teleport it once again unavailable and smite would become ridiculous.

Those are all my chars with their standard items. Stats can vary quite a lot depending on specific setups. All screenshots are taken without prebuffing, except their respective CtA switches, and using oak when I can.
There are lots of invisible stats, but this should give you general idea of what are you playing against :)
One screenshot has been modified - Faithless's (wow 3 x s) LCS to show full damage hammer with conc on, even if conc is not on. He is hybrid so I wanted to show both his sides as hybrid.

IR1 for me as all of my chars use some weird prepatch crap, at least beta CtA for all of them
IR0 for BvC cause he uses ATMA haxed Grief/Beast and my assassins that use Chaos claw. Also Doom BA for my Fury druid just to troll nulio :p
Probably can replace some items to lower down to IR0 for some chars, but not all.

I'll toss some thoughts around a bit later when I have time.

thanks for answers kimppi and nulio. this is relanxing to hear :) image of pvp is that you have to tweak your builds to teeth. oh that FO build is good idea. i´ll add that and some other sorcs later to table when i know more what builds i want to test and how to make those even bit more towards to pvp.

Better gear will only allow you to make more mistakes, and occasionally will make your dmg a bit higher, but you can choose build that will allow you to make some mistakes and get away with it just because of nature of that build. That's why I/we always give ES based sorceress as pvp giveaway. Because of 95% ES, you take very low dmg to your health, and life charms aren't really needed. Sorc will regen their mana and thus keep you in moor longer. You don't need crazy gear, but it does help :)

That would be my suggestion as first char - ES based sorc. You can pick color of sorc whatever you think it would be most fun to you, and from your characters I'd probably pick Wind druid. I picked that class as my starting character and he was pretty good.
Just make 165fcr/86 fhr full vita wind druid (using wizardspike as weapon of choice, really). It's very cheap and powerful build. Windy handles most close combatants easy due to wolfs serving as minion stack and taking hits for you. Cyclone armor will help you vs some casters. Only build that you would have lots problems with are bowazons, just because you don't have block. Once you get better charms and could get ~3500 life after BO and Oak, you could respec to maxblock - then Windy becomes really strong. Aim for something like... 4500-5500 tornado dmg and then work on defensive mods.

That's just initial thoughts. No clue about firewall, you might want to join in MP game and check it. If it works then it shouldn't be problem, but those things can be tricky sometimes.
