The Passive Aggressive Tournament

Ok, let's try

There you go!

(And as you can see; not a great drop...)
Wow, that resolution is so small! That's a serious disadvantage.
I gave up on a summon druid in a previous tournament, they're good, but not super fun Imo. So stay strong, you can do it!
@Southpaw8668 - OW works as the sum of all items you have, so 50% flail + 50% shield does indeed = 100% OW. The only exception to this are dual-wielding barbs and assassins using two weapons which provide OW (say, dual-Steel flails). In that case, only the weapon that is doing the hitting has its percentage applied (along with any non-item % as well).
True. But 50% is probably about as good as 100% unless you want to be sure you get ow applied in 1 hit and then get out.

Great character, Southpaw, love it!

@Pb_pal and @kestegs - thanks for the feedback on the OW mechanics and yes I'm enjoying this build somewhat, although it definitely takes a bit of patience making the Desert Mercenary do what you want him to. I wish blizzard would have made him more offensive minded and patrol out in front of your character and not always hauling butt to the rear like you always need your six covered. o_O

Isen and Kasim seemed to move through lands of the fiery pits and canals with a more meaningful purpose. With the ever increasing presence of Oblivion Knights and Death Lords Isen decided to switch to his Crushflange and Swordback Hold set up, with the added and much required +50 FR. They reached the City of the Damned and almost joined the corpses chained to the posts there after making a sloppy mistake in the old desecrated temple with the green evil leaf-like windows trying to coax Kasim into attack position Isen stirred up a whole mess of champion bats that swarmed him right near a corner. He cleared his mind and focused his thoughts on Salvation and just keep pounding away, kept chugging pots and praying that he would not run dry too soon. His prayers were answered and enough bat blood was spilled that they suddenly started to drop like flies with one big purple left on the belt. He thought to himself, I must be more careful and patient. There is still much to be done, and Kasim might need to be switched out with one of his brothers, if he continues to be complacent of our duties in this land.

Salvation is marvelous and Diablo, green with envy is no more...we are awarded with further CB from a lovely pair of Goblin Toes!!!

So I made it through NM. I now face Hell with a couple of problems.

1. My plan is to not get involved in melee fighting but still stay safe: how do I get the kills?
2. I have bad gear, armor and weapon...
3. My merc has bad gear, armor but more importantly: weapon!
4. How to deal with physical immunes?

I found a Lem in Cow Level. What to do with it?

This is my gear:

LittleGirl Summoner druide, lvl 67, Rogue Encampment Hell

I found a Lem in Cow Level. What to do with it?

Treachery armor for merc would probably be my choice. That will help take down PI monsters, unless they are also PoI.
The extra attack speed will make all weapons for him better. Maybe shop something for him with heavy elemental damage?

MF is nice but maybe it's time for a more survival orinted helm as well? Crafted Blood helms are usually good, with Deadly Strike and life steal (plus you can get lucky and score some nice resists).

Switching to a Holy Freeze merc would also help against PIs.

Another completely different way to do things would be to switch to an Act III Cold merc. I found that this made the Grizzly a more efficient killer since the freezing would usually make it attack the same monster until it was dead, rather than knocking monsters around, then switch targets and the old target regenerates. A ranged weapon for the Druid with Prevent Monster Heal or long-lasting poison is recommened against PI- and other stubborn bosses.

Great job queenEm, just getting to hell is a great accomplishment. As for your concerns, many character in restricting tournaments such as this one encounter the same concerns. My best general answer is to take it slow and try to keep at least some MF on at all times. A single item or good find can change the course of your character dramatically. That is also why full clear and playing with a high players setting is essential in these types of tournaments.

Best of luck and I look forward to ready more of your updates.

Congrats on getting to Hell! Always nice to see a Conqueror happen :)

I will basically just echo jiansonz's statements, as he pretty much nailed it.

1. Do you need to get the kills? Your merc/grizzly should do the trick just fine.

2. Do lots of gambling and shopping for alternative gear in the slots you feel are weak. For examply, you should easily be able to shop a Plated belt with decent single resists (up to 30%) and high life (up to +100) - ie. Coral Plated Belt of the Whale. As jiansonz said, at least a partial switch from MF gear is advisable at this point, and will make a significant difference in your survivability.

3. Treachery armour for the merc is probably your best option for that Lem, as a safe and living merc is a very valuable commodity in HC. As for his weapon, you can always try rolling a Cruel one for him, or else you can keep a sharp eye out for elite bases and socket them with the cube, then look at RW options. Calabi's merc finished the game with an Insight CV and that was more than enough.

On that note, do you have any other useable runes? Lionheart is another option for the merc's armour to beef him (or your druid) up if you want to save that Lem for something else (although I'm not sure what at this point other than maybe Lawbringer on an A5 merc)

4. This is tougher for a druid. Like jiansonz said, you can switch your merc around to try and accomodate this. Another option would be to shop a bow that has ctc amp on it, and keep it on your switch for those situations. Then you can plink away from behind your helpers and break the PI's.

I immediately ran into this situation...

So I have of course stored the Lem and everything else in GoMule so that's not possible at the moment since I really want to get this quest... I will try to gamlble some better gear for me and the merc and see if I can solve it.

Great suggestion on the Plated Belt!

Just to update you. I gambled for a ctc Amp bow and gave up on the den of evil quest. I created the Treachery armory and switched back to the Insight polearm for the merc. So I have now cleared the Cold Plains and the Cave. They had 3 bosses with physical immunes (and stone skin of course...) but this set up worked well. So I might yet make it a but further... I will gamble for a belt to get my Lightning resist up

Things I learned today in D2:
1. Jianzons is the D2 king, his advice always great and spot on
2. I am a noob, still after 10 years of playing
3. Keep all exceptional bases throughout NM, you never know when you need them.
4. Single pass should mean clear pass (even if not stated in the rules....)
5. Players 8 will pay out in the end, in stuff if not in levels.
6. Choose one item of MF. The rest is for survival.

Nicely done and gratz on the Lem from Cows.

If you have a Lum, make a Smoke armor right away (for resists + weaken charges), and anyway replace that rare Defender with a Rhyme Bone Shield. That gives you CBF, 75% resists, and also some MF.

IMO Lum and Lem are the single most useful semi-rare runes because you can make game-changing runewords with them that don't require any other semi-rare rune. With Treachery (level 15 Fade = 15% PDR) + Smoke (Weaken, damage dealt reduced by 33%) you can effectively reduce the physical damage to mercs by 43% (1 - 0.67 * 0.15) if I'm not mistaken.

Why are you playing at 640x480, by the way?

replace that rare Defender with a Rhyme Bone Shield. That gives you CBF, 75% resists, and also some MF.

Only 25% but it's still awesome.

I agree on Lum and Lem. Lum (if you also find the more rare Pul) is also for upgrading exceptional unqiue weapons and Lem is also for Passion.

Um and Fal are in that league as well, I think.

Passion also has +1 to Berserk, so that could help against the physical immunes.

So here the story ends. A stair trap in lvl 5 at the Countess place at the respectful age of lvl 71. The ghosts with physical immune + a gang of sharp shooting archers proved too much. Expected and I know that I have been wanting it a little so that I could start over but now that it happened it feels... sad some how. I am so happy that I learned so much with this char. More than I have in a long time of playing. Can you believe it? A game that I have played for 10 years? You gotta love D2...

I will definitely think about entering an assassin. Thanks Pb_Pal for hosting! You are doing a great job :)

@queenEm - Oh no! Sorry about the deeds. :( I really enjoyed your progress and updates, congrats on getting as far as you did! I'm glad you had a good time, and I look forward to your next char if you do decide to rejoin. :)

I suppose a table update is in order. RIP LittleGirl.

@queenEm - Oh no! Sorry about the deeds. :( I really enjoyed your progress and updates, congrats on getting as far as you did! I'm glad you had a good time, and I look forward to your next char if you do decide to rejoin. :)

Thanks Pb!

I will not give up! This time I will go back to an assassin, which I have never played. I will name her... ehh... hmm...
*scratches head*

PassiveQueen

Let's see how this goes...

PassiveQueen, my next attempt at a guradian, has passed act1 normal at p8 and without any real exitement to talk of. Neither good nor bad...

question to those who have played assassins before: there are two kinds of shadows, master and warrior. Am I correct t assume that the master is the better one? I was surprised to see they are not synergized...

PassiveQueen, assassin lvl 20, Lut Gholein normal

@queenEm - The master has access to all your skills like Mind Blast and she uses it a lot which can be annoying at times. The warrior is much more controllable as she utilizes the skill you have active on right click button. The master leans more toward acting like a MA sin.
Edit: So I would say for this tournament with your limited skill selection I would go for the Master.

So the master will use Mind blast even though I don't have any points in it? Meaning I will in theory be able to use the unallowed skills through her?

Master does more damage (she gets MUCH better gear), but Warrior is more predictable which is why I usually prefer Warrior for HC play, especially with a Martial Artist.
