The Official Ex-RuST SCL "Journey to Hell" Group Thread

Just as a matter of interest...

It has been stated, or at least inferred, that the purpose of this LS3 group is to reach lvl 99. You guys do know the amount of work this takes don't you? I mean, I have done thousands of runs with all but 5 of the top 20 players on Asia (and 3 of those 5 are bots :( ) and it literally takes hundreds of hours to reach 99. At the height of my baalrunning I was running non-stop (5-10 min break every 100 runs) for 10 or more hours a day...and my zon is still lvl 96 (because I pretty much stopped running her coz of my damn laaaag).

Even if you're not interested in the race for 99, but just want to get there it will take a hell of a lot more than 2 or 3 hours per day to do it, and this does not take into account any mfing.

Maybe I'm misreading your intentions, but I thought I should point it out (and I also got into an argument, 3 on 1, this afternoon about the "fact" that it only takes 2000 runs to get from 90-99 (apparently I am a noob that is so incompetant that I die every 2 or 3 runs and that's why I'm not 99 yet...)).

Anyway...I will get around to posting my stuff properly eventually, but off the top of my head:

lvl 67
All curses at least lvl 4 (1 hard point in each)
Skeleton Mastery 20 (17 hard)
Skeleton Warriors 20 (17 hard)
Skeleton Mages 19 (16 hard)
Summon Resist 10 (7 hard)
Clay, Blood, Iron Golems 4 (1 hard)
Revive 6 (1 hard)
Corpse Explosion 4 (1 hard)

My skellies and mastery will have max hard points at lvl 76 after which I will max Summon Resist.

Ptopaz Tarnhelm
3 Ptopaz Gothic Plate (will make Wealth if possible)
Rare 20%mf gloves with some poison and fire resist
26% and 25% nagels
12% Tal Belt
2x%mf rare boots with some resist
35%mf ammy
Spirit Longsword
Rhyme Shrunken Head (+2 Revive, +2 Life Tap, +3 Bone Prison(?))

I have not yet had any real problems with resists (they are currently all positive, albeit low), but some of you may have heard my tale of woe tonight about my meeting with some council members armed with conviction aura...not pretty. I can usually get out of the way and let the skellies absorb everything though I can see problems in certain situations in Hell. Having said that, please check with me before throwing any resist charms, of any size or percentage, away. I will also try and get a good resist wand and shrunken head for switch.

LS3 is for CLvl99, yes. This JoTH isn't. The whole purpose of starting the moment ladder resets is because of this, and to Baal with familiar, trusted faces. Season one was just as the holidays started, season two during the summer. I think season three will be when the semester ends and will most likely be that way for the foreseeable future (a full year). Can I reach Clvl99 before anyone else? Not likely, but what's the reward, some WoW prize pack I'd still have to pay monthly for? No thank you.

I laid a handful of charms, some smalls with resists, near Larzuk towards the end. Those items are to be checked and sold by me when no one else wants them and leaves the game. I say me because I've usually already gone through them and I can use the money for both recharging Harmony and gambling, this is why I use the goldfinding charms. You have Rhyme (+25%ARes), and should have a decent amulet if the one I offered wasn't good enough. What specific items should I hunt for? I figure without MF I have the best chance hitting high council repeatedly for decent mid-level exceptional uniques (even another Skin of the Viper Magi) as well as gold. Could also go through Lower Kurast up to Travincal to find charms, even non-skillers. Let me know any details.

I am not presently looking for any items as such. If something like Arm of King Leoric drops I will certainly snap it up but otherwise I am quite impressed so far with my surviveability, with only conviction aura (which breaks my skellies resists in a big way) and tight spaces a problem. I would like to upgrade my armour to 4 Ptopaz exceptional as soon as I can, until I can make a decent def Wealth. Of course a good Shimmering Amulet of Luck wouldn't go astray but I have never seen one with better than about 10%mf and 7% all resist so I'm not holding my breath. Also, I would like to upgrade my Rhyme to a more useful Shrunken Head at some point, the one I have only really gives me Revive as I rarely use Life Tap and never use Bone Prison, so if you find one with good summoning automods and decent def I will make a new Rhyme.

I am keeping that ammy in my stash for possible use in Hell. I also made a mistake in my listed equipment as I am now using Chance Guards, I have, however, kept those rare Light Gauntlets with 20%mf for possible use in Hell.

I intend to try and wear pure mf gear for as long as possible because normal monsters have a higher chance of drops so we may as well take advantage of that. If I do find surviving in Hell to be too difficult I will change equipment depending on the act and/or area we are in (boosting lightning resists in the presence of Beetles/Gloams and fire resists for Diablo for example). In the case of LE's I would ask Aellopos to make liberal use of Slow Missiles, between that and my Lower Resist we should be able to take down Hell Gloams before they can do us too much damage. Wherever possible I also use Dim Vision which will also help us stay alive.

I re-rolled a GC last night and ended up with a Lucky GC of Greed - some mf and about 33% goldfind if you want that. I also have more Ptopazes than I need so if you want to socket your armour or helm with one let me know.

Gonna have to take off an hour early tonight. On the upside, I have no school Friday, so I'm good all night there. God I hate Thursdays. Gonna have problems catching up solo if there are lightning immunes. Anyway, did a little MFing. Found Ax his green hat, a decent rare paladin shield, a Gorefoot, and probably something I'm forgetting since that was awhile ago.

May be happening more frequently than I previously thought. Parents think I should be getting more sleep if I shall be driving to school, which is infinitely better than taking the bus. I will stay with you guys whenever possible, but since I refuse to take the bus on Thursdays, Wednesdays may be early exits from now on. Thursdays are still tentative, but are probably more likely for me to be staying than Wednesdays. I may even still be able to make Wednesdays. I'll play it by ear for the most part, but you've been forewarned.

On the same note, I will have similar problems with the late night east 'JoTH,' so if you want someone more reliable, I understand. Still good for the earlier one, though. Actually, I may be able to attend fully if we just make it an hour earlier, but that's you guys' call.

On a similar note to Ghost's post.... I have had a schedule change, and now have an early class Tue/Thu. This means Mon/Wed are out for me for the next 3 months :( Also, this week only, I will be missing Friday and Saturday.

I caught up to you wath today, and will continue to try and do so. I found a 15%Sup 3os Ogre Axe, If someone wants to make a merc weapon (I dont really know what). Also, a +85life ammy (no other mods) dropped. Thats about it.

PS: If anyone notices a 4os flamberge drop (just that specific sword) can they grab it? It is fast and range 3, and since I'm whirling whenever wath is around, It would make a much better spirit.

PPS: Are we ever going to hear from BeWere again? Has anyone had contact with him, or If you are reading this BeWere, can we get an update?

In closing.... all praise the Allmighty Enchant.

Well, no one showed

Last quest finished: Ancients
Last wp reached: WSK Lvl 2
Highest lvl: 68 (me! ;) )

More tomorrow.

Mid-way Thursday EST (Wednesday PST) and only Morton, who had to leave before it started, and Ghost, who left early, even appeared. I stayed in bed until about 12:45 here and got out just to turn on the computer and play. So much for that.

I'll be leveling to late 68 to catch Wathombe and try finding a HoZ or two.

An altered version for east, players added later

I've slimmed down the first post Wathombe made and added a few things for more versatility (multiple groups within each style, and multiple styles) and clarity. I wanted to cover more area and specify requirements so they can't be misunderstood or abused. Feel free to chime in with more exact language as it's been a while since last I proofread or edited writing.

I'll go back through the posts and begin listing everyone who seems to be willing to join east and other information as well.

This thread is intended for the organization of and discussion about the Runeword Search Team's ladder-only "Journey to Hell."

First, credit should go to forum member jeyeltee for the "Journey to Hell" idea, as it was he who put together a "JtH" group this past September and it evidently went well. The following guidelines are based on his template and represent a private ladder session:
  • Each group will consist of five to eight people, mostly ex-RuST members, each playing different character classes allowing one class to be repeated within each group.
  • All characters must begin as initially created (no experience gained, quests completed or items added), play from the beginning of A1N to the end of A5H without third-party assistance (maphack, pickit, etc) and complete quests in order (no cheating or rushing).
  • Players may ONLY use items found by current JoTH characters, within their group or joint groups.
  • Each group will attempt to play at designated times on as many nights as possible, if five or more members of each group are available.
  • Each party's roster and progress will be maintained here noting players participated, last quest completed, farthest waypoint activated and highest level achieved. Players missing a session will be responsible for attaining the objectives reached without exceeding them, either helped by other members or alone during item-finding runs.
Guidelines to be defined further in following posts.

Participants need to list the following information:
  • Forum name
  • USEast account name
  • Hardcore or softcore
  • Character class
  • Character name
  • Build design
  • Group type (power players or leisure levelers)
  • Hours and days available, converted to Eastern Standard Time
  • Alternate contact information (if not otherwise listed on the forum)
Currently, power play groups are likely to start at 8PM and last to 12Midnight EST, give or take, while leisure levelers play in tune with the current USWest JoTH at 1-3AM EST. If enough players participate groups can be assembled with regards to each person's needs and times can be altered.

Players are encouraged to create team-oriented builds that may not be capable of succeeding alone. It's also intended to improve cooperation and unselfishness in trying to reach a popular goal. Once a consistant pattern evolves the participants will be prepared to start each ladder season with a sincere probability of one or more RuST members reaching CLvl99 early in its days, perhaps even vying for first honors.

Give me an opinion on this, Wathombe. Don't want to be seen as twisting your post around.

Again, neither of these two have been on the forums for awhile, if ever, and have yet to get back to me with formal info as their situations have been described before.

Sure! I'd love to join a communal levelling team. My main account is ksechrist and I'd like to play a necro (summon) or sorc (orb/firewall). I play between 7-10 EST about half the nights of the week. I'd set up a separate account for this JTH-WKS or some such, but it sounds like fun.

<!-- / message -->Needs to update the information with the details in my last post, but otherwise has the main things we need.

Uh, just a quick note for ya Wathombe...should season 3 start up I'd like to join in with you guys and help search for the new rune words in this closed party. I'd probably do Enchantress or Dragon-Claw Assassin. So do me a favour and keep me in mind?

So, he's officially out of the JoTH but definitely wants in for LS3.

I'd be interested in joining a JtH on East, but from following this thread, I can't tell whether anything's been started yet. I'd be able to play a couple of weeknights per week from 7-11 pm (EST) and occasional weekends as well. I'd be interested in bringing along almost any character type (with only a couple of exceptions - I'd rather not play: non-singer barb or melee druid) but, in particular, a trapper or necro summoner would be especially interesting to me.

If y'all need another player, e-mail me at my account name (datharaur) at my gmail address.

You'll need to earn some trust from the players here, but if you're a trustworthy non-jerk then most likely you'll be in. Get back to us concerning the above posts.

I was going to make a lightning spearzon, but I just saw that the west JoTH has one, and I'd kinda like to do something different.

Here's some builds I've been considering, but am not limited to:
Elemental MA assassin
Blade Fury assassin
Fire claws druid

I know you gave further information, like the account being Astrofish4, so don't worry about the above quote as I'm simply keeping track and would only want finalization a day or so before we start (hopefully soon).

USEast JtH i dont believe i have time to play with you guys even though it is in a good time range for me, i think i need to relax a bit right now and not keep to a strict schedule of getting on and off at the same time everynight

i think i forgot alot of things that i wanted to say i will keep trying to find somebody that is on to give my password to for merick (or anyone for that matter)

sry again for bailing out, it was fun

Edit: i also wanted to say something about LS3, i do plan to take part in it for glory, i also may decide to play on west, since that is now where everyone i know plays (all my friends dropped d2 several months ago now) even though the difference in times will not allow me to play with most of you until the last week of may. Pray that it starts the instant i am home for summer, the extra time i would get would allow me to keep up with all the 13yearolds that play constantly

AO4 and Ikeren, most likely Be-Were will be joining them in the wait-for-ladder-season-three category.

speaking of which, when the ladder resets, who wants to play 24/7 with me lol i wanna be lvl 99 by 2 weeks in :-) although that will never happen with the freetime i have up at school i can easily be the first to 99 (if only i had maphack though for baal runs [note i will never get it]...)

Ax: Count me in for the East JTH, with a Charger/Smiter build. My schedule has changed to allow this most nights.

Cherokee hasn't been seen since before the holidays and we must assume he won't make the first private session. If he makes a presence we'll include him in a second session immediately afterward as the power players will probably finish quickly.

JoeJTang (GuyGuy) seems sincerely interested, and has been alerted to this thread.

I think Phaeax is also interested, but may have missed a post from him if he replied.

pncwd (RedneckRuler) is on periodically but says he can't participate.

No word as to Senff's system issues.

Shaft.ed vanished from the face of the earth.

Still looking to contact Sippy Cup (NKaiser57)

And I think prg8ATpitt.edu (Paul3720) has left D2:LOD until LS3.

If I missed anyone remind me as I just went through the last ten pages of posts and have a leaking shower faucet that apparantly can't be fixed (which means I'll have to bung something in). I'll clear all this up soon if it doesn't clear itself (i.e. people leave it to me to assume the details).

Later.

I AM SOOOOO CONFUSED!!
Re: USEast JtH timimg
I usually play daily from about 8pm to 10pm. I would love to be part of a group to play from scratch. But I get the feeling that these sessions are goping to run later than that.

1- Is UsEast JtH going to start soon?
2- What hours are we talking about? (I cannot commit to later than 10pm quitting time.)
3- I don't have to be a Necro. I can play whatever the group needs.

As stated earlier, there are two types of groups: leisure and power.

Leisure levelers are those that might play 3-4 times a week at about two hour intervals. This would include Wathombe, due to his west coast origins and job/personal life. Because he is practiced at playing from 10-12 PST then the same 1-3 EST that the west JoTH is being played at would be one leisure group (maybe the only if no more than eight people would join).

Power players are those that will play up to four hours each day (maybe more) and would likely reach hell Baal with two characters before the leisure group(s) reach(es) the first time. They're more of the idea that they want multiple, specific builds to do a variety of things. They want a Pindler (probably a trap assassin, but many builds can run him quickly), a Countress (enchantress sorceress, utilizing low-level Teleport and Static Field for ultra-fast Countess runs), a cowkiller (a pure lightning amazon with Thunderstroke, Thundergod's Vigor, etc), and Mephister (Tesladin-style Fist of the Heavens or combination/specialty paladin). This is the fastest way to get them into the 90s, with trusted players in private games, but also the fastest way to learn cooperative play and get builds that otherwise wouldn't survive well into A5H. They're more likely to play from 8-12EST, and since we might have two groups another can start earlier for those with... ahem, curfews. So one from 6-10 and another from 8-12 might be a possibility, but you also must take into account a second leisure group being 8-10 EST or somesuch should there be enough people for that.

All you need to do is list the times you are available, as you have (8-10) and decide ASAP, or after one or two nights, if everyone else is playing too long and getting too far for you to keep up - therefore switching to the leisure group during that time - or if you can stay later/enter earlier to join the other group. It's best if you figure this out beforehand but we can work things out should there be problems.

I'll detail your information in the next update, that last post was just to get everything together.

Quick post before I head to the basketball game:

--The revised guidelines look great, Ax. You might also point out that the 1-3 AM EST group won't be able to start until the current West JotH has finished.

--I may or may not make it on tonight depending on how late I get home from the basketball game and how sleepy my wife is when I get home. ;) (tlaloc, I sent you a pm)

--I may be able to play for a significant period of time during the day on Monday, as my office is closed for the MLK holiday. If other West JotH members are free, we could make a lot of progress. This all depends on whether or not my wife has to work, which is an open question at this point.

As an extension of this, perhaps it would be good to have them all able to autonomously clear certain high experience areas. An 8 player Hell Baal run will provide roughly 4-5 million experience in the late 80's early 90's. I, however, have recently been joining full public non-baal games, and getting 15-20 million experience per game, making for extremely fast experience gain. Assuming our builds could take this, we could have 1-2 people each clearing a high yield area, thus gaining more experience than if we all stick together. I suggest cows, Baal, and the Bloody Foothills. There may be more, but these are all high yield and fairly easy to access. With a whole group of people, we won't even have the problems finding full games that limits my speed. Survivability may be an issue that early in the season, so we may need groups of 2-3 in some areas.

I wouldn't recommend an Enchantress for the Countess--she's fire immune. Lightning works well, else we could raise mercenaries.

I won't be on tonight as I have to go to work at 6pm my time (work + cold = BLECH!). I'll try and get myself to Blood Raven tomorrow.

Just out of curiosity would anyone be interested in an "off-class" LS3 group on Asia? By this I mean a twinked (as far as that is possible at the early stages of ladder) group of the less popular builds such as Palazons (and other Battlemaid variants), Executerix Sorcs and other "novelty" (bad choice of words...in my experience some "novelty" builds, such as WWasns, are very strong) builds.

Some builds might include:

Pure Curse (and Bone Armour) Melee Necro
Any of the various Battlemaid Amazons
Any of several Melee Sorc builds
Pure Spearazon (Jab, Impale, Fend only)
Any of the dozens of other builds I can't think of ATM

Alternatively there is the invincible Amazon group, similar to the Immortal Paladin group (see my thread "Godly Zon Team" in the Amazon forum). This is made up of 2 Battlemaids, 1 spearazon, 1 Poison Jav, 1 lightning Jav, 1 Cold, 1 Fire and 1 Strafe/Multi/Guided bowazon.

Many of these builds are item dependant, hence twinked and starting at least a week late in order to get basic items. A major part of this group would be daily (wherever possible) Runebuses. Starting late does not mean the inability to attain glory. Sera_Braveblade, my beloved Palazon, was started almost 2 weeks into the current season (had to make a stupid MF Sorc) and made it to 4th on the Amazon ladder, top 40 overall, before I moved on to other things. Asia was also the last to get a 99.

Anyway, just an idea...

Woohoo!

I don't think any JoTH is starting until west ends, to be honest. Dave's schedule is like working triple shifts right now, he most likely won't be available until next Friday, and Jester still appears to be trying to fix his system (you'd think he and Senff would be one in the same). I have no problem getting the other groups going earlier but I also haven't sorted everything out yet, so only if they nagged me about wanting to start ASAP...

There was no play tonight. At most four people showed, and only had three by midway. Hopefully, we can reach Radament by end of tonight's session, Golden Bird by the end of Sunday's and into A5H and beyond if we play a lot during Monday. A little much?

At high 80s and early 90s you clearly see a drop in experience gain. Highest levels in the game are 85 barring minions, champs, uniques, superuniques, etc. Already suffering from the level penalty and then from the experience calculation itself, even eight players consistantly clearing WSK entirely doesn't gain that much. Those specific early 85 areas can be fairly useful, but remember we are around 70, where the penalties start, and sufficiently enough below their level that we get only a fraction of their worth.

As for Countess, her minions are the problem. They are always cold immune, so an enchantress with a nice, quick merc can handle them after Static Field. Countess is a pushover unless she's dual-immune or laden with auxilary affixes, and even then a Life Tap wand for your merc usually deals with that. A pure lightning sorceress would get into trouble a bit more often just trying to level, much like a pure lightning amazon built for cowing, but I guess it's a matter of preference.

If you think your connection to USWest was bad, imagine mine to Asia. I can play west easily, Europe in a pinch, I suppose, but I'd never reach 96 on Asia let alone 99. With the latency issue half-way around the world I'd never get that potion off in time and would die too often to make Baaling worth it. There's a reason Asia had the last 99.

Of the many reasons I played in the USWest JoTH was that fact that I had to have an account there in order to utilize Blizzard's technical support. Since I had a starter I could add one character and keep it in mind. Also, without a serious stash of items I could practice my item-ditching. You see, I'm a bit of a pack rat, in that I have all these ideas for builds that take me a while to get around to, and with all the items in this game it's no wonder I have almost thirty accounts on USEast. True, with .10 I can ditch about a quarter of those items since they're outclassed even by ones I've already found on ladder, but that just means those builds are even more possible with the trade bait I've accumulated.

On USWest if I find a Herald of Zakarum I know one of the people I play with can use it better and I'll likely get a Jalal's Mane out of it; I don't have to horde. It's a totally different way of playing, to me, not keeping everything I find.

Your idea intrigues me, as I wanted to play an all-barbarian team when I first started, but couldn't get any takers. Things like that either go completely untweaked or completely tweaked, no in-betweens, and tweaked means USEast for me.

Actually my lag has nothing to do with geographic distance. It is a problem with my ISP and they are claiming to be looking for a solution. I am having times when it takes me ten minutes for a web page to completely download (in fact I cannot remember the last time a RPGforums page finished without me hitting Stop). On the advice of my ISP, who were insisting there is nothing wrong with my connection, I logged onto a Quake3 server located some 15km, as the (foul) crow flies, away and had a ping of 512. They have "promised" to get some techies out to check my lines. In the past when I have logged onto West for tech support or Europe or East for a bit of fun I have had the same ping as I get on Asia.

As for all your accounts on East I might remind you that you could have 100 accounts and it would still make no difference, except when you play non-ladder.

The reason Asia was last to 99 (in fact, iirc, all the Asia realms had 99's before East or West, just that none were registered) is that we have three realms - Asia, Asia2 and Asia3 - on the one Gateway (Asia), whereas East, for example, has only the one realm on the one gateway. This is why East is overcrowded and Asia is supposedly "empty". In fact, if you consider Asia to be one realm, like East or West, you will find a similar population but around 25 clvl 99 chars there, as opposed to the 10 on West.

Having said that, I will be the first to admit that the Invincible Amazons are so prohibitively expensive as to be almost impossible to attempt on Asia...but then, that's what happens when you have an economy based on legit items rather than massively duped ebay craps. Then again, I havn't looked at them in the light of the new runewords...

AO4 is back in, hot damn.

Yes, i cannot help myself. I can't stay away for more than a week (and even during that week of no d2, i was still watching these forums daily).

With the start of a new semester (one that a college will not even see until after i am there) I find I have alot more free time than a while ago.

I was thinking about "leisurely," it doesn't really describe what i am looking for, so i will try it again:

3-4 Weekdays per week at 8-10EST
Friday/Saturday from 8-until as far as we can go until too many sleep-induced quitting takes place
Sunday from 8-10, or perhaps no Sunday at all

Items

Hey west team!

I found quite a few items the past two days the following are a list of things I am holding for the group:

Ethereal Deathbit
Wizendraw
Skystrike
Tal Rasha's Horadric Crest (helm)
Tran oul's wing (sexton trophy?)

Hopefully I will run into you guys tonight to drop it in town.

I also found a lovely Fal rune, which means that I only need UM now for Chaos (but I am not holding my breath for it).
Also found another nagel ring as well as the dwarf star (in the same game) as well as netting duriels armor.

The funny thing is that I didnt carry that much mf, I must have been carrying like less than 150... Wierd. Anyways, thats my update for now, I will do stats and what not later.

Happy hunting.
