The Official Ex-RuST SCL "Journey to Hell" Group Thread

Update

USEast:Still need available times and desired builds from those not yet in the JoTH.

RuST JoTH #1:

DNMorton: forgotten paladin build
Remlin (*Remlin3): unknown necromancer build

RuST JoTH #2:

Ax2Grind (*New2TheGame0): medic/cleric paladin just about any time until I get a job and the skill points worked out
Dave (RPGForums account unknown, *RonStoppable): bonemancer, has two jobs, but should be fine all but Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for night play, detailed times to be announced

Yet to be divided:

Corporeal Ghost (*LiquidFury/*PlutoniYum), Holy Freeze paladin until 3AM EST
Merick (*Astrofish4), Spearazon at 7-11PMEST

Undecided, either to play or the build to use:

Be-Were, sparse for west next week or so, hasn't responded for east
Cherokee (Cher0kee), haven't heard from since holidays began
Jester, responded but appears to need a bit more time
JoeJTang (GuyGuy), will try whispering him next time seen
KSechrist, same as above but seen in forums lately, give him a PM
Phaeax, rarely online
Senff (Frenology), needs to get his system back up and running
Shaft.ed, haven't seen for who-knows-how-long
Sippy Cup (NKaiser57), rarely online
SuperbDragon (Selex), rarely online

With six confirmed and ten reserved that means they would all need to join - not likely to happen. We'll need those couple of friends certain of our members referred to, just in case. We still have space for assassins, druids and sorceresses with an odd and end here and there, otherwise I'll need to change my build to form one group.

Still no dice on my guy. His computer is not in yet, and I don't have timeframes to ask him for. I'd rather not play the freeze guy, it was just an economical suggestion. I don't think I want to duplicate characters and I already have one. I guess, for lack of anything I'd rather do at the moment, I'll say Singer. I am fine for later than 3AM EST if I don't have school the next day, for the most part. Oh, and you may have missed something in my last post, as I edited it about 6 times after posting it, and this one showed up rather fast. Just fishing for opinions on that private server. What time are you guys on for tonight (west)? I'd like to join ASAP if AO4 can ship me that account.

Hmmm, my cd-drive (which I only bought in late July) is making some strange noises so I am beginning to think perhaps that is the cause of my lag problem. I am certain this is the reason I drop out when going to Act3 as this was the first symptom that led me to eventually replace my old cd-drive. Having said that, I wouldn't have thought that my cd-drive would effect my displayed ping which last night ranged from 2-7.8k on both West and Asia (my usual ping should be around 350... yes it is high but it is usually very smooth with no detrimental effects).

Any thoughts?

Your CD drive does not have any effect on your ping. Perhaps check the line running into the computer? Or is it wireless? I know at one point my line was frayed and caused me many problems.

As for the CD drive--sounds like it may be something else, though what, I haven't a clue. Is your CD in decent condition? Is your computer able to run the other cinematics (assuming this is when you drop)? Do any other CDs give you problems?

I didn't think it did have an effect, it was just that when i was playing Starcraft (SP) yesterday the drive started making strange noises and getting all choppy. It seems to have stopped now so maybe it was just a bit of dust or something.

I'm just grasping at straws here because this lag came on suddenly about 3 weeks ago and it is getting worse. It has gotten to the point now where I have to create 3 or 4 games just to get one with ping lower than 2000. Other games jump, as I said, from as low as 2 to as high as 8000 (even higher sometimes).

I do have one clue to go on. I am on a dial-up connection and have been with the same isp for 18 months. I am now on my second plan with them. The first plan had a five hour session limit but when I moved to my current address I found that I was having to dial in at least 6 times every time I wanted to connect meaning I was paying about $1 in local calls every few hours. The connection frequently dropped out (unlike at my old address), increasing my phone bills. In frustration I changed my plan to one which has free local calls and no session limits. Since then I rarely drop out. In the time I have been with these people every time I dial up I get a different connection speed from 24kbps to (once) 55.9kbps. This changed the same time my lag started. Now every time I connect I have the same speed - 42663kbps. EVERY SINGLE TIME. Having such a stable connection speed is highly unusual for dial-up, or so I am told. The thing is, my isp does not offer (so far as I am aware) ADSL or anything other than dial-up, so it doesn't seem to be a "conspiracy" to get more money out of me by forcing me to change plans again.

Is it at all possible that someone is using my computer as some sort of proxy, kind of piggy-backing my connection? I use an iMac so it is safe, but not immune, from most virii and hacks. This seems to be the most reasonable explanation, especially when it is always at it's worst at the same times every day.

So, do we have any start dates/times for the east JtH?
My first choice was Necro (with whatever build the group needed), BUT, I will play any character to fill-in-the-gaps.
My end time has to be around 10pm Eastern (occasional late nights can be handled). I usually can get on by 8pm.

edit: Time for a new avatar

Sokar and Remlin...

Sokar: Your CDD can cause you to time out between acts by misreading and trying to reread, constantly. Your system can lock up during this effect as hardware doesn't act independent of each other. The simplest example is when a drive starts heavily reading and your performance staggers, the worse example is this. Since you're not sending signals to the server (yes, your system does practically nothing during this time) it loses sync with you and you get dropped.

The best way to deal with this is to eject the CD while playing, as long as you never advance to a new act with a character that has never reached it. For instance, if you're in A1NM entering a game, then want to join us in A3NM to finish the quests and Mephisto, there won't be a problem. When we defeat Mephisto and enter the Infernal Gate for the first time with your necromancer the game will require the CD after cinematics. Beyond that you can freely enter and exit the first four acts without the CD, until we defeat Diablo. My suggestion is to have the CD ejected when fighting that demon because the game locks up right when he dies if drive has problems. Don't insert the disk until you're about to go to Harrogoth.

Personally, I wholeheartedly believe that, regardless of whatever copyright protection scheme being used or other excuse Blizzard has, this is a major flaw in the game. With so many people having problems with so many pieces of hardware it shows that these devices are simply not made for endless usage by games like these, at least not the low- to mid-end versions, but who's going to pay a premium for a Plextor just to play this game, which has huge flaws in itself?

Anyway, other than needing the CD in the drive at gamestart and at newactstart, you can easily survive ejecting it, unless you also have problems detecting it after closing the tray. Then you need to think about detection techniques, a new CDD or imaging software with enough HDD space.

Remlin: If a necromancer is the build you want you should probably state what kind. We need to make sure skills and gear needed don't overlap, as that Boneshade may only drop once and Dave could really use it considering he's a bonejangler. If you want to play another build then research it quickly. I'd rather get it underway ASAP but I want set groups to make sure all those participating don't suddenly retreat when their parents see their internet bills and decide enough is enough (okay, that only applies to certain people, but you get the point).

Remember to look for those in that list online and talk to them about joining. No one's formally picked a barbarian, sorceress or assassin yet, we might have two groups needing each, and try varying them for a simple reason. Trading between groups is allowed, because we can't play with sixteen people in the same game and because we know all sixteen are starting fresh so there's no interference in the 'ladder season' we're trying to mimic.

RPGForums name (USEast *accountname), build and times available.

That's the format, get it to me if I've made mistakes.

Me=Remlin
Account=*Remlin3
Character=RustyBones

I'll go for Summoner/Curses and stay away from the PB skills (except a little corpse explosion of course) . This can help as a meatwall and all curses as needed.

USWest "JotH": It occurred to me this morning that I leave on a six-day business trip on Thu 20 Jan. When we started, I had thought we would be done with Hell Baal by then, but now I'm not so sure. We make good progress when we can get games together and when we don't spend 60-90 minutes catching people up. Now that everyone but Sparticus and Aellopos (if Corporeal Ghost does indeed pick up AO4's acct) are caught up on quests, maybe we can move a little more quickly.

To that end...

Be-Were: Hope your job is not too much of a pain in the a$$. If you are going to be joining us for tonight and Saturday night, I would strongly urge you to get on an hour or two before our start time to catch up as much as you can. The last quest we completed was Lam Esen's Tome, and the last wp activated was Kurast Bazaar. You don't need any Khalim parts, we have them all so far. If anyone else is online before start time, they can help you through the earlier acts. I think dnmorton gets on early from time to time, and if my wife nods off early I'll get on, too.

Of course, if Corporeal Ghost takes over AO4's acct, he'll need to catch up, too, which brings me to...

Ghost: I am not sure AO4 is going to be checking this thread anymore, so I have PMed you his e-mail address so that you can ask him for his USWest acct info directly. If he gets the info to you quickly enough, I would also urge you to get on an hour or two before start time tonight (joining Be-Were, if possible) to catch up as much as possible. As mentioned, we got as far as Kurast Bazaar/Lam Esen's Tome, and we've got the first two Khalim parts already. I think Aellopos (the javazon) is somewhere in A2NM, but I'm not sure.

If anyone needs more information on player's accts, progress, et cetera, you can always check the site: Ex-RuST USWest "JotH" page

More later.

Once again, I'll try a singer, unless we need something else. And Sokar, there is an installation option that requires you to choose from a dialog box whether to run the cinematic or not, in which case, if you hit 'no,' you may not need the CD at all at this point. Of course, this would probably require you to uninstall the game, reinstall it as the smaller version, and repatch it. I don't know if your CD/CD drive is in good enough condition to take that given what it/they seem to be doing.

And I will possibly be gone for most of the weekend of Jan 23, so don't schedule anything major for then if you need me or, apparently, Wathombe.

Ghost:
And I will possibly be gone for most of the weekend of Jan 23, so don't schedule anything major for then.
...which is the same week I'll be gone, but for USWest "JotH" purposes, I'm hoping we can kill Hell Baal by then.

Did you get my PM, and are you still interested in taking over AO4's acct? Let us know.

Ghost:
Yep. Will join you guys if he forks it over. What's the timeframe?
Great. We play b/t 10 and midnight PST (11:00 PM to 1:00 AM MST). We try to play every weeknight, and weekends we play by ear. Anytime we have five or more from the group, we quest and level. Anytime we have four or less, we mf without passing the highest quest/wp/lvl previously achieved. You can check out the guidelines on the front page at http://home.comcast.net/~wathombe/rust_jth.htm.

Hopefully, we will play tonight. As mentioned before, if AO4 sends you the pw soon enough, catch up as much as you can before the start time. I think that character (Aellopos) is only about an act behind. If myself or *dnmorton are online before start time, we'll help you.

I'm gonna try to be on by 10 today. My homie wants to hang out (to brag about his date), and you know how WE do it, so... Seriously, though, I'll be on.

Raskol

P.S. Wath - I remember when you had about only 150 posts. At the rate ur going, you'll pass me up in about a month, lol.

;) I do, I do. Have fun and we'll see you when we see you.

I'm posting a LOT more slowly than I was in the thick of the runeword hunt, though. What sucks is, I joined November 03 when I was checking out a werebear guide here, then didn't post again for 8 months. Now, my "posts per day" lists as 1.5, when in truth it's been 4/day since the runeword hunt started in July. Ah, well.

I'm seldom awake before 3 PM here on weekends, and it's usually more like 5 or 6. Just a heads up there. Don't know how often I'll be logging on West to check for you guys if there isn't a preset time.

Any other ladder runners? If not, I'll see who I can find elsewhere.

East updated

USEast: Those who wish to join need to supply available times and desired builds which do not conflict with those already in the JoTH.

RuST JoTH #1:

DNMorton: forgotten paladin build
Remlin (*Remlin3): RustyBones, summoner variant

RuST JoTH #2:

Ax2Grind (*New2TheGame0): DoubleHealix, medic/cleric paladin at any time
'Dave' (*RonStoppable): Unknown (bonejangler) during most of the weekend

Yet to be divided:

Corporeal Ghost (*LiquidFury/*PlutoniYum): Unknown (singer) until 3AM EST
Merick (*Astrofish4): Spearazon at 7-11PMEST

Undecided, either to play or the build to use:

Be-Were: sparse for west next week or so, hasn't responded for east
Cherokee (Cher0kee): haven't heard from since holidays began, get back here!
Jester: responded but appears to need a bit more time
JoeJTang (GuyGuy): will try whispering him next time seen
KSechrist: same as above but seen in forums lately, give him a PM
Phaeax: seen online just today
Senff (Frenology): needs to get his system back up and running
Shaft.ed: haven't seen for who-knows-how-long
Sippy Cup (NKaiser57): rarely online
SuperbDragon (Selex): rarely online

USWest: It would be a good (read: very good) idea for those who need to catch up to be on about an hour earlier, as with a wall of fur I provide we should easily be able to zip through the previous acts.

As for Sokar's CD issue, Corp, it's not the cinematics. Trust me on this. It's possible to turn them off through a CLP but either way the game requires the disc to be read between acts after they're played and during times like Diablo's death scene, should the disc register (it's possible to continue, if I'm not mistaken, with the disc ejected then, but still needs it to enter A5NM). It's a pain in the ass, but it has to be done. Lower installations have never helped as far as I've known, it'd surprise me.

Anyway, I'll be on earlier if I'm not doing anything on my east accounts, which need quite a bit of tidying up. I wonder if I could run a bunch of items past you guys and see if you think they're worth keeping (I always like to stash/horde 15%ED/3AR superiors, close ethereal superiors and perfect uniques for upgrading, but have precious few PULs and LUMs).

See you tonight.

It's not the cinematics causing me grief, it happens whenever I enter Act 3 (well, not every time). Also, my CDD isn't cheap. I run a Mac and the thing with Macs is you get a premium machine but software and hardware generally comes with a premium pricetag. My new CDD is (literally  ) a Porsche from LaCie and it cost me $230, so it is definately not a low end device. The other symptoms that lead to the demise (it just stopped one day and never started again) of my internal CDD have not occurred as yet and if this external one is 1/2 as decent as the internal drive (incidentally, did you know that a Mac's internal CDD is a laptop one? I beat the crap out of that drive for four years before it died) there is a good 6 months left in it before it finally packs it in.

I am going to try to and speak to my isp but it annoys me no end listening to synthesized music, punctuated by "We value our customers and will be with you shortly" every 20 seconds, for over an hour. I can live with dropping out between acts but I can't take this incredible laaaaaaaag I have been having for much longer. I couldn't even enter most games last night when I switched realms (13 of 17 private Baalruns I failed to join, actually I failed 5 times, the rest of them I didn't even got to the door).

I'm going to be on West early tonight so I can try and get some Andy runs in.
