The Certain Death Tournament.

Re: The Certain Death Tournament.

Mursilis - I'm stunned, that was awful bad luck to lose a character to what was essentially a drive-by. Commiserations, mate. :(

Re: The Certain Death Tournament.

Foiled Again - Damn Varmits!!!!:banghead:

Yes folks, Icybiatch has bit the dust!:tombstone:

Slain by Mephisto while distracted by Ghoul Lords. The battle was going nicely with Icy holding Meph cornered with Ice Arrow while Razan slowly chipped away at his life source. Then 2 Ghoul Lords decided to join the party and proceeded to reign down bombs of fire. They had to be dealt with as they were taking too much life from Razan, so Icy turned her attention briefly to the Ghoul Lords with the intention of disposing of them quickly. Not a clever staregy at all as Mephisto one shotted Icy with his wave of lightning and it was all over in a milli-second.

In hindsight, which is a wonderful thing I might add - I should have waited perhaps one more level so a valkyre and freezing arrow were both available. Maybe this would have made a difference to the outcome

Icybiatch, Frost Maiden, Lvl 29, Durance 3, RIP

Re: The Certain Death Tournament.

DAMN YOU MEPHISTO!! <shakes fist>
Bad luck, Brutass, the Lord of Hatred is on a roll today.

Re: The Certain Death Tournament.

...
Hp, careful at the Kurast bar, man! You never know what Alkor puts in those drinks. :)...

She actually blacked out on Friday night and woke up next to her faithful merc Haseen. Hopefully they have birth control in the world of D2.

By Sunday her hangover had worn off enough and we entered the Jungle. It was an uneventful trip to Lower Kurast. I found a bunch of crappy charms. My first Unique (gave it to my merc for now). Quite a few low runes (Els, Tirs and such). LS is starting to do a bit of damage, but it's also a mana hog, so I don't use it that much.

Re: The Certain Death Tournament.

RIP Argoel, Jaheira, Mara, WitherStick, GeneralJoe, and Icybiatch

@Alfonso: nope, they were all rares in the Andy drop. Other than the IK gloves, she didn't drop anything useful.

Several times in Act II, the valk actually died! :dizzy: Mostly, she would die to multiple bosspacks with nasty mods, though, and she never died too fast.

Physical immunes and unleechables became a fairly big problem, mostly due to the various skeleton and wraith type monsters. Killing the skeletons so they can't be ressurected is possible with a 1 point unsynergized FA. It gets tedious fast, though... Spamming FA, or even just strafing can empty my mana bulb quickly if I can't leech enough, so I ended up with a very bad blue-pot habit.

After I'd gotten to the Far Oasis and cleared it all, I took a break. When I came back, I went to the Maggot Lair, and got the staff. It was very long and tedious, and although I was fine in the straight passages, it was tough near the corners, since I had to be so cautious. After that I needed another break.

When I came back again, I went the relatively short distance to the entrance to the Lost City. Unexpectedly, it took quite awhile. And since I'd already cleared this area, I couldn't pick anything up. I didn't think anything good would drop on that short trip. I was wrong. There were 4 bosspacks in my way, the first dropped Iceblink, the last dropped Venom Ward, and one of the two that were clumped together in the middle (and kept killing my valk with their extra strong/cursed/fanaticism aura) dropped... a Mal! I've never even seen a Mal before, and it would really go great in 'Prudence' (25-35% res all, 17 MDR, etc), and I can't use it. :banghead: Oh, well, at least this way I can give it to an SC character who won't end up losing it by dying.

Then I got to the Lost City, finally allowed to keep things that drop, and what do you think dropped next? Nothing. :unimpressed: Eventually, however, a Crusader bow dropped, which I chippy-cubed twice and got this:
Code:
Grinding Crusader Bow of Quality
'EthEth'
Two-Hand Damage: 15 to 123
Required Dexterity: 121
Required Strength: 97
Required Level: 57
Bow Class - Slow Attack Speed
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 25
Fingerprint: 0x50dfd8b3
+2 to Maximum Damage
-50% Target Defense
+58 to Maximum Damage (Based on Character Level)
Socketed (2: 2 used)

I put the Eth runes in, since my CtH was at a rather dismal 63% or so.

I had my first of two rather scary NDEs in the Ancient Tunnels. The valk was tanking a cursed pack of Assailants (the 4-armed guys), and I had a decoy out between the bosspack and me. I had gotten cursed just by being within about half a screen of the valk when the boss cursed her, but hadn't bothered going to town to get that fixed, since I was in a good position and the valk was tanking quite well. Then, for no apparent reason, one of the minions ran over to me, past the decoy, and hit me while I was in the middle of a strafe cycle. I couldn't have had more than about 30 or so HP left. I drank a rejuv pot and ran. After being de-cursed I came back and finished them off, more carefully this time.

Fangskin's pack was also scary, although not an NDE. The decoy couldn't take much of a beating, but it was cast between me and a nearby claw viper several times, and that and the knockback from strafe kept them off of me, but only barely. Fangskin himself died offscreen somewhere, and I never actually saw him alive.

The second scary NDE was in the Palace, when some archers in the other room shot past my valk and decoy and hit me. I believe the first hit took ~1/2 my life, and that I drank a healing pot, then got hit with another before drinking a rejuv. I'm not sure exactly, and I might have used a purple after the first hit. Either way I ended up using 2-3 purples and deciding to skip those guys and just move on.

In the arcane sanctuary, I found another druid summoning skiller. The game apparently is confusing me with a summoner, but given how I'm abusing Valkyrie and Decoy, I'm not so sure I'm not half of the time. :whistling:

Also in the arcane sanctuary, I ran into a rather dangerous boss. FE/LE/teleportation. And naturally physical immune. Whenever I got him hurt, he'd start teleporting around. I'd got him pretty close to dead, but then he started teleporting, and he ended up right next to me with about two of his teleports. At that point I got nervous, so I decided to leave him alone. He didn't want to leave me alone, though, but I eventually got in a good position to strafe without being in range of his lightning bolts, and kept him in hit recovery often enough that he died.

Tal Rasha's tomb was as incredibly tedious as I'd anticipated, as I used my level 1 unsynergized FA to kill off the burning dead minions so they couldn't come back. Finally I got to Duriel, and he was pretty easy. Not quite as easy as in NM, though, he ignored the decoy I cast in his face and tried to come after me. I ran around the room in a circle, but then he started paying attention to my valk. The valk held up very well, although you could visibly see her lifebar dip sometimes. I kept a decoy behind her to keep her from getting knocked back. It took forever, though, probably due to a combination of poor damage and poor CtH (LCS said 57%, although the 2 Eths in the Crusader bow might have improved that slightly).

Duriel dropped Ichorsting, but nothing else interesting.

Re: The Certain Death Tournament.

Oops, I forgot to repost the table after the 40 post mark. I'll rectify that below.

Cor, I need to know what level you are so I can update you bro. ;)

Loz, RIP for WitherStick. I'm still finding it hard to believe that you did this well with your first HC character. With such an underpowered build. In such a difficult tournament. Seriously man, that's just amazing. I'm glad you're considering rejoining!

I don't think I'm going to use any Bone Walls/Prisons in the Durance III past Bremm. It seems to make Meph's a.i. go wild with Blizzards or something. Honestly though, I've never seen him cast it and I'm almost tempted to fool around with bone spells just to see it for myself. It'll be tough to avoid this temptation, like not pressing an aching tooth with your tongue. Argh!

Mursilis, ack, what a brutal way to die! Most monsters run up and then wind up their attack animation, but the crows must have a really short animation because I've seen them do use dangerous charge-like tactics in NM and Hell. RIP for Jaheira...I hate seeing Hell characters go, but good job getting that far nonetheless.

Brutass, wow, as Loz said, Mephisto is on a roll today. One shot lightning? You must have gotten a bad roll. :( That's all it takes in this tournament, unfortunately. (I myself have been lucky several times, I think.)

ATB, nice Hell progress. Just out of curiosity, does the -50% target defense work against bosses and champions? P.S. congrats/condolences for your Mal. ;)

Uniques have been raining on Shadow Salad:
  • Voulge (Maggot Lair)
  • Bastard Sword (Ancient Tunnels)
  • Jo Staff (Ancient Tunnels)
  • Long Battle Bow (Ancient Tunnels)
  • Poleaxe (Ancient Tunnels sparkly chest)
  • Bone Helm (Ancient Tunnels sparkly chest)

5 uniques in one small area?!?! Sheesh. I hope the Hell Ancient Tunnels treat me this nicely! The Wormskull was an upgrade for Ilzan (Holy Freeze merc, I forgot to mention that I switched at the start of A2), and the Razorswitch will be used against the summoner for the MDR, although S_S will have to swap his gear around quite a bit. He has an allergic reaction to resistances; having to much resistance in any one element makes him break out in hives quite badly. (Does anyone know how much damage the Summoner's Firewall deals per frame in NM?)

He also found a Sol Rune, Cathan's Seal, Isenharts plate, and 2 Arcanna's staffs. Progress has been really safe and methodical. He spammed Bone Prisons all over Fanskin's pack while Ilzan handled blind monsters from in the counterclockwise direction. Then S_S Dimmed Fanskin's pack and let Fangskin break through the prisons, put Life Tap on Fangskin, and Ilzan him down. That was the most difficult battle between the Maggot Lair and Claw Viper Temple, but he was never hit once.

Re: The Certain Death Tournament.

The advance through the Bloody foothills started with two slinger bosses camped outside Harrogath, one might enhanced the other multishot but luckily no aura overlap and once they were dealt with the unaccustomed amount of manuevring space between monster groups made progress relatively safe. Shenk, Eldritch and the other uniques all gave indifferent drops and apart from the occasional fire arrow strike from skeletons slowly advancing offscreen into range little damage was taken elsewhere.

The Crystalline passage, inhabited by mages (pic of Valkyrie toting cbf mod item), ghosts and succubi was then cleared and a tentative foray into the Frozen river betrayed the unwelcome presence of LI/PI immune gloams so beating a retreat that quest was skipped for the time being and Damasque continued smoothly on to clear all up to the Frozen tundra waypoint with the valkyrie in her own good time dealing well with the otherwise tricky inhabitants of the Glacial Trail. The pit of Acheron was cleared yielding another handy 3frw small charm. The rather long session ended there but the game was kept open.

The current rune and gear situation meant Damasque can make Peace in a three socket elite light armour and two Spirit monarchs or Rhyme and two Spirit monarchs. but not both Peace and Rhyme. Monarchs have yet to drop (though all three socketing quests remain) and cbf might be considered essential against Baal so a sweep through the Frozen river and subsequently Nihlathaks temple to force needed drops was deemed necessary. A single amn, sol or shael dropping would open up all possibilities but a lem and io could even give Damasque Delirium.

So the second session started with The Frozen river. Quickly finding that the third inhabitants there were dark lancers and not cursing succubi gave a little hope but with death only a couple of lightning bursts away the valkyrie took the lead role for nearly 90 minutes of painstaking manuevring and battlefield control as the path to Anya was slowly cleared.

Hellfire corner was the first real danger spot with the erratic disengage moves of the gloams and their apparant curiosity of Damasques inactivity causing several awkward moments and downright retreats. The magnificent valkyrie shrugged off their damage without complaint but worringly rejuves were being consumed at an alarming rate. Several advances and many retreats later followed with lightning lashing in persistently from far away from the gloams whose curiosity was gradually proving their downfall. Finally the area containing Frozenstein, flat, totally bereft of cover and surrounded by plenty of water for the gloams to hover over, beckoned. So far, so far. Does Damasque turn back now with only two purples left?

Well, the boss pack was covered by gloams and died almost unseen offscreen to fury but the gloams clustering around Anya took a long while to tease out for the valkyrie to finish them off one by one with portals being used in extremis. Anya was freed and gave a poor javelin for all that effort.

After a quick gear reshuffle* the clearance through to the Ancients was tame in comparison to prior events though the bloodstars did hit the Valkyrie quite hard on occasion out on the Tundra. A third white elite amazon javelin was dropped in the Infernal pit. The remaining imbue will be used on it or on the superior white diadem found earlier in hell with 8 pskulls saved so far giving single chance at a single reroll. The session yielded another 10 LR small charm from the Icy cellar and another hel rune from a champion pack in the Ancients Way itself.

More nervous gear shuffling and point spending, bringing block back up to 75 with a few points to spare , preceded the trial with The Ancients but Damasque got a good first roll with no extra fast (slayers amulet worn just in case), no cursing and no poison immunities amongst the three. The Valkyrie tanked well but plague javelin and patience did the damage with plenty of potions and javelins to spare.

Re: The Certain Death Tournament.

Don't let off the gas pedal now and suffer from "I just beat the Ancients" letdown :)

Josephine is moving right along and has now cleared the Spider Forest. She finished all of Act 2 on P8 and finished the act at level 28. I don't remember any spectacular drops but she does have the option of wearing the 2-piece Angelics armor/belt for some nice MF. However, I've already got a 3 flawed topaz breast plate and I'm rather happy with a gambled belt with 17% FHR and +17 to life. Between that gamble and the +20 life quest, I had about a 40% gain in my life bulb!!

Duriel went down very quickly without any trips to town nor any potions. I shopped a +3 Static Field staff before the battle and then was able to sliver him from a "safe" distance before dropping a Blizzard on him.

Re: The Certain Death Tournament.

Spurred on by the great success of her fellow 'zon (Good luck in the WSK, Tarantella ) little Soapie, the strafe+valk+don't-know-yet'azon, soldiered on.
The really nice gods (that's what rng means, right?) looked favorable upon her undertaking and provided a nice little golden surprise.
This and the gambled circlet made me rethink my rather careless approach and I upped the player setting from 5 to 7 and began killing stuff a little more thoroughly.
The following fights were pretty uneventful, even though Soapie didn't improve the equipment of Waheed, the temp prayer merc, beyond what Farah had sold after hiring him.
When the first white Reflex Bow dropped, Soaps remembered her old friend Charsi and the favour she owed her. This was the result. Not quick enough for 3fpa strafe, but according to my calculations a bit better than the rare composite bow with some rubies in it (in A2 two rare composite bows with 2 sox each dropped). Also the additional leech due to higher phys dmg was nice.
Mephisto was safely plinked to death from across the Moat. Only exciting drop was a green amulet, but it sadly turned out to be Vidalas...

In early A4 Soapie made lvl 30. Waheed was stripped and ritually murdered (posting pics of that would surely get me banned). In the aftermath of that grisly undertaking, Soaps swore off men forever and hired an imaginary female friend, called Brünnhilde (Brünnie to her friends). Izual was her first real test and Brünnie passed with flying colours (also it took about 5 minutes to plink him to death).
The HF drop made Soapie feel a little blue, which led her to engage in dishonourable tactics.
Big D himself was a bit scary, since I didn't time the strafe bursts very well and Brünnie could not withstand his lighting hose of death. Good thing I tackled him at /p1. His drop wasn't spectacular, but at least Soaps can now switch to Sigons gloves+boots if more ias is needed (but lose knockback).
Also: 2 skill points? Don't need them... Don't think I ever forgot that before :scratchchin:

Onwards to Harrogath then. Since I didn't take a single screenshot of a fight, I guess things went very smoothly.
Finds included a Tankreds Armor (which Soapie didn't like) and an Amn rune. This meant I could make "Edge" and "Zephyr" in Reflex Bows (Zephyr a bit earlier). I keep switching between them since I can't decide which does less damage. Additionally I crafted a blood belt, which turned out nice enough with 10% ow and 18 life.
Soapie's damage doesn't really matter though, since Brünnie, the valk, really started to kick the monsters' mysoginist behinds. This means Soapie is relegated to spreading around ow, pmh, cold and slow with strafe. Works well enough for the time being.
At some point later Soapie seems to have killed Baal, although I can't really remember the fight. Not that I was doing much more than pathfinding for the valk. The Cow level was equally unevenful. But it looked pretty cool. I kept imagining machine gun noises while mowing down the hapless cows.

LCS entering NM. The massive resists make me very confident.
Skills:
strafe - 6
d/a/e+decoy - 2
crit - ~6
pene - 4
valk - as much as possible

Also: I gambled Eagle Horn. Too bad Soapie is not a Hammerdin.

Re: The Certain Death Tournament.

Hadriela is through Act 3 and Act 4. Players 7 and full clears was the name of the game yet progress was extremely fast. Act 3 began with Hadriela continuing to cast Blizzard and Glacial Spike from behind her combat merc Azrael. Azrael continued to be very effective though a bit unfocused. Hadriela hit level 30 in the Flayer Dungeon and after putting one point in Frozen Orb and one point in Cold Mastery she was suddenly able to match (or surpass) Azrael’s damage . . . when Hadriela hit level 31 and had two points in Frozen Orb and Cold Mastery Azrael was rendered pretty much superfluous.

Hadriela has five points in Energy Shield and ten points in Telekinesis (and is planning on leaving things this way until at least Frozen Orb is maxed) . . . and as such she never really seemed to take too much damage. There was a stair trap in the Ruined Temple and another in the Ruined Fane . . . both appearing to be somewhat nasty but I can’t say I recall seeing Hadriela’s hit points drop one bit.

Maybe the only time that there was much damage done to Hadriela was when she was battling Mephisto. Mephisto landed some good ranged attacks as Hadriela and Azrael approached, and then Hadriela had to stand on top of Mephisto to static him (Azrael was supposed to be distracting the demon but seemed distracted himself) . . . so Hadriela got beat upon a bit before Mephisto had been static’ed enough times that only a couple Frozen Orbs were needed to drop the boss.

Mephisto didn’t drop anything of use and that pretty much sums up the rest of the Act 3 drops. Set/uniques were useless and included: Arcanna’s Staff and Isenhart’s Helm (out of the same sparkly chest), Cathan’s Staff, Vidala’s Boots, and another Isenhart’s Helm (oh goody).

Here were Hadriela’s stats at the end of Act 3.

Act 4 was also done at Players 7 (full clears) and was extremely speedy (everything was completed in an hour . . . that’s fast for me  ). Hadriela’s Frozen Orb and Cold Mastery both reached level five (thanks to Izual . . . who was static’ed and orb’ed to death in seconds) . . . did I mention that nothing could stand against her! The Chaos Sanctuary was cleared without a single Azrael death . . . up until Diablo. Diablo managed to lightning hose Azrael a couple times as Hadriela attempted to find a safe approach path up to Big D (she had to stand on top of him to static). After about a minute she found a safe path, static’ed Big D from behind, and then orb’ed him to death (but not before Azrael managed to die again . . . perhaps he needs a new weapon  ).

That new weapon could have been a Strength . . . except there have been no good rune drops including at the Forge (oh look! . . an El Rune  ) . . . hopefully a Sol Rune will drop at some point in Act 5 (mmm Insight) . . . but I’m not holding my breath because so far this tournament I have found one Sol Rune (despite doing full clears at Players 7 of twelve eligible Acts)! . . gah! . . and now back on topic . . . there was one set item (Hsarus' Boots) and two useless unique item drops in Act 4: the Skewer of Krintiz and a Hellclap (off Diablo of course).

Here were Hadriela’s stats at the end of Act 4.

I thought I was going to catch up. Well, shortly I'll have Frozen Orb as well and then we'll see if I can maintain your pace.

Up to this point, our builds are very similar except that I only have one point in TK at this point. I'm going to see how long I can put off that investment. If I can make an Insight before I have to invest in TK, I may not synergize too much. Lots to think about on the build plan.

I'm also trying to figure out when I absolutely have to start investing in STR in preparation for a Spirit shield. I think I'm going to be constrained by when the Monarchs start to fall. Anyone know off the top of their heads when that is?

Edit: to answer my own question, it looks like it's early in A1 Hell in some of the side branches.

Re: The Certain Death Tournament.

Morte and Hannah (and Iantha near the end) mopped up the rest of Act V with ease. Despite doing some semi-scary tanking duty, Morte was only below half life once in the act, and that was when Baal fired 3 flame novas in a row.

Finds have been OK. Nokozan Relic, Goblin Toe, Tal x2, Ral x2, Ort x3, Thul x2, and Morte´s current javelins:

Carrion Branch
War Javelin

Throw Damage: 24 to 56
One-Hand Damage: 10 to 33
Quantity: 60
Required Dexterity: 25
Required Strength: 25
Required Level: 24
Javelin Class - Very Fast Attack Speed
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 68
Fingerprint: 0xd77e3f36
+73% Enhanced Damage
+193 to Attack Rating
+1 to Maximum Damage
Adds 25-33 fire damage
20% Increased Attack Speed
5% Chance to cast Level 3 Ice Bolt on attack

I am not sure how I am going to adapt to the resist penalty in NM, but I have some charms that can make up for most of it. But that´s for later. Now I am going for one last treasure hunt in this difficulty.

Re: The Certain Death Tournament.

My condolences to everybody who's suffered deeds; it's been a busy weekend so I'm still catching up on everything.

Fishyzon continues plodding her way forward.

The remainder of Act 1 was cleared in a solid chunk of playing. The general cycle was: aggro some bad guys, see if they were Dark Ones; if not, run behind Klarissa and let her nibble everything to death. If so, swap to the javelin, weave through the horde (if applicable), and take down the Shaman with Charged Strike, swap back to Gull, run behind Klarissa, and let her nibble everything to death. Once I hit the third floor things sped up immensely because Ghouls were slower than silt, Arachs liked to hide in corners, and Banished kept their distance, so Klarissa wasted less time taking her silly three steps to create space.

Andariel was surprisingly painless. Dodge (or Avoid) plus a shield plus lots of potions plus tanking her poison bolts for Klarissa meant this was a foregone conclusion. Thanks for dropping mostly crap, Andy!

Act 2 rolled around and I bid farewell to Klarissa and picked up Pratham the Prayer merc. I bought a Voulge with +max damgae for some 660ish gold and we were off into the sewers. The killing went much much much more quickly, and soon enough we reached this guy. What a great place for him to spawn, keeping his minions from messing us up. Thanks, Radament!

Clearing continued. Despite having a Gull, nothing above and beyond the usual has dropped for Fishyzon yet. She did do some gambling and turned up a nice rare circlet with Static damage, +5 to regain life, and physical damage reduced by 2 (in addition to +Energy which for a merc...yeah...), so Pratham would routinely one-shot mobs on /p8. The killing only got worse when a rare scythe with +max damage, enhanced damage, and 10% IAS popped in the Halls of the Dead. Strategy for mummies was not needed, since Pratham owned the skeletons faster than even a Champion group could revive them, and eventually electric death would fall upon the Hollow Ones.

Maggot Hole...yawn. Pratham did all the work, Gull was out the whole time. Got trapped by beetles on one occasion, but Dodge/Avoid/Evade/whatever kept it from being a NDE until Pratham cleared a path. Didn't get caught in Coldworm's poison/cold/death aura this time. Same with the Lost City and Ancient Tunnels, though I helped Pratham take down Dark Elder. Guardians spawned in the Viper Temple and Fishyzon actually had to CS a few times to help wade through the bones (though only after they had all been killed at least once).

So there we are. Fishyzon is about to enter Jehryn's den of salaciousness with Pratham in tow. If everything works out ideally (which it probably won't), I will be able to kill him off against Duriel and gasp the last bit towards level 30 on my own (since I'm almost always about mid-29 by the end of Act 2). I have hit 30 in Act 2 before, but only if Experience Shrines smile upon me; in that case, I'll need to work especially hard to kill him because good LORD does Prayer keep him alive...though I could swap to an Act 1 merc and go charging into a mob of beetles or something.

Re: The Certain Death Tournament.

It is this player's opinion that Act 2 of Diablo should be used as an "enhanced interrogation technique," so I am very pleased to almost be done. I mean seriously, all the worst enemy types make their first appearance in Act 2: Beetles, Maggots, and Unravellers. Oh, and Leapers, two of which (this is one), through some loophole in the Matrix, because unkillable sitting on a lone hit point. Neither Blaze nor Bolt did anything to these Agent Smith Leapers, and so I had to TP out and wait five minutes or so before returning lest I leave some stone unturned.

Gulzar, my faithful (and pious) Combat Mercenary, has received several upgrades, and now does up near 300 max damage, meaning I'm even less useful to him. I have the full Horadric Staff now, only the Ancient Tunnels left to go outside the Palace, which means I've taken out my least favorite area in the game (the Maggot Lair) and have my second least-favorite area in the game to go (the Palace Cellars). Nothing of note has dropped except for the rare Chain Mail my Merc is wearing, the 6% FR on which prevented me from wearing it. I've also had miserable luck with jewelry: I'm still wearing the (admittedly decent) rare Amulet I found in the Den of Evil, and my rings give me 20 PR, 9 LR, 10 FCR, and 15 to AR. Oh and 1 to Light Radius. I no longer have a speck of MF, which probably needs to change and fast.

Re: The Certain Death Tournament.

I thought I was going to catch up.

Ohomemgrande – Haha! . . I have way too much free time for playing D2 . . . at least for a couple more days . . . but then I suspect that you should have no problem passing me  . Also I was wondering, are you going for blocking? (Hadriela hasn’t put any points in dexterity . . . yet . . . but now that I have a Shael I’m considering making a Rhyme . . . we’ll see).

Hadriela did a full clear of Act 5 at Players 7 . . . no problems :alright: . Hadriela cleared the early areas easily and by the Crystalline Passage had amassed enough skill points to put one point in Hydra and one point in Fire Mastery (mostly for scouting . . . not sure if it was a good investment yet). The rest of Hadriela’s skill points went into Frozen Orb (which continued to dominate everything even when she was hoarding skill points to go into the fire tree).

The Crystalline Passage was also significant because it was where Hadriela had her first encounter with the Evil Black Magic Voodoo Curse (also known as Blood Mana). Frozen Orb costs 27 mana and Hadriela had 170 hit points so there would have been some danger if Hadriela continued casting but she never did as she was more than happy to let Azrael do the killing whenever she was cursed.

Past the Blood Mana curse there wasn’t really anything that I was concerned about going into Act 5 and as it turns out there wasn’t anything worthy of concern. Nihlathak didn’t manage much of a fight (he must be using a level 1 CE or something because I never get hit by it in normal). The Ancients were done at Players 1 (why not) . . . and dropped dead in about twenty seconds flat (no potions used). Baal’s Minions went down without incident (not even the Plucked Chickens managed to push her out of the main chamber). Baal was a bit concerning (Mana Burn plus Blood Mana curse sounded dangerous on Players 7 but I did it anyways). Turns out there wasn’t any reason for concern. Hadriela tele’d in next to Baal and then ran around behind him while he was watching Azrael and then static’ed Baal nearly to death and then dropped him using a couple orbs (the whole thing lasted twenty seconds tops).

Considering the time and energy spent killing Baal the drop was outstanding (Azrael will be putting the Boneflesh to great use). Beyond Baal the set/uniques were also very abundant and included: Isenhart’s Armor #1, Berserker’s Axe, Sigon’s Greaves, Cathan’s Ring, Crushflange, Cathan’s Armor, Isenhart’s Armor #2, the Jade Tan Do, a 16 MF Nagel (boo), Hsarus’ Buckler, Vidala’s Bow, Isenhart’s Armor #3, and a Gleamscythe. Past the set/uniques Hadriela also found a pretty good magic ring. The rune drops were not so good (the top finds being a Thul and another Thul . . . agh why couldn’t have an Amn or a Sol . . . oh well).

Here were Hadriela’s stats at the end of Act 5.

Destroyer Hadriela then engaged (er, um, slaughtered) the cows. The Cow King dropped a set item (but not one of his set . . . boo) and a Deathspade popped out from under a stone . . . but otherwise there weren’t any set/uniques. The best drop was a Shael Rune (Hadriela’s highest to date . . . but why couldn’t it have been a Sol or Amn)!

At present going into NM Hadriela’s resistances would be in single digits (that won’t work well) so Hadriela is probably going to need to ditch her Umbral Disk (and its plus twenty life) for a pdiamond shield . . . we’ll see . . .

Re: The Certain Death Tournament.

Also I was wondering, are you going for blocking? (Hadriela hasn’t put any points in dexterity . . . yet . . . but now that I have a Shael I’m considering making a Rhyme . . . we’ll see).

I'm not going to go for any blocking at all. Max Energy + STR to equip gear.

I will be trying to get my FHR up to the 86% BP and my FCR up to 105%. Hopefully that won't be too difficult if I can manage to cobble together a Spirit sword and a Spirit shield (50-70 FCR). But the 63% BP should be essential.

I'm also hoping to get either some amicae gear or a lot of sol runes for DR. The interesting thing about an ES build is that resistances aren't as critical as with some of the other builds, especially as your ES gets to high levels. The ES absorbs before any resistances and then whatever gets through is subject to the resistance of your character. So, if you do get 50% resistance and have 75% absorb on the ES, it's really like you have around 87% resistance to an element.

Josephine for her part has cleared up to Lower Kurast now, including the two temples there. The Sewers will be next. Something in one of the temples dropped me a Cathan's Seal, but alas, it was already an ilvl ring that I already had.

Re: The Certain Death Tournament.

Impressive progress by many here. I've been passed several times over!

Also condolences to the recent deeds. RIP and their deeds will be remembered!

Britta has made some small progress, reaching the arcane sanctuary, and lvl 26. One interesting find was crushflange, another handy BF weapon to go with the gnasher! between the two, I think the gnasher is better because of the OW, but the knockback could be useful, so we'll see.
