It's been awhile since I have posted any update. Last time was mid-January. Freddie the singing barb was at the Cold Plains waypoint in Nightmare. I had made it to the Inner Cloister soon after that, but never updated here. Stopped playing him for awhile. I picked back up with him tonight and made it down to Andy. All went pretty well on the trip down to see her. I had set the game at players 7. Ran across some champ packs here and there, nothing too scary. Was getting a little tired and thought I might stop at the Cats2 waypoint, but I pressed on. I made all the correct preparation for Andy except one. We cleared the two outer rooms, and then the front half of her chamber. Freddie uses warcry to stun everything, taunting the shamans, while the merc gets the kills. So I run up enough to trigger Andy and pull her back to the empty big room. The merc engages right away and before I could draw her attention or feed him a pot, he was laying on the floor. I test my luck with her, stand toe to toe for a bit, but I couldn't see the life bar move at all. Huh? I bailed and ress'd the merc. This time I drew her attention while he poked away. Wow, this is taking awhile, and then it hit me, I left it on players 7. I had meant to lower it to 3, maybe even 1. Well, nothing I could do now, but see how it plays out. It was a long battle, I had to ress the merc probably 5-6 times, mainly because I would come down, and he would engage Andy first. I had to swing at her a few times to get her attention off the merc. Anyway, we finally killed her, but there were plenty of NDEs. Fun stuff, and she made it worth while by dropping some decent stuff:
Spectral Shard, which is really nice for a singer (50%FCR, +50mana, 10 to all resists)
Bladebuckle, Arcanna's Flesh armor, and an ORT rune.

Gratz Mournblade on taking out NM Andy! It is completely freaky how fast she empties your life bulb with no vitality invested.
All you need now is to bounce between screenfulls of beetle sparks and Horadrim Ancient deathstars and you're good to go! :thumbup:

Stupid, stupid, stupid. Can't play that way in this tournament. Freddie bit it in the Stony Tomb to a beetle boss pack. Loz tried to warn me. The merc had the group engaged inside the room, and I should have pulled him back into the hall and used the doorway, or at least separate them, but I used a warcry too many, which probably isn't a good idea in an open area with multiple beetles. Boss was cold enchanted with another mod I don't remember, nothing nasty. He was still alive, it was the bolts they let off when damaged that got me. Stupid. Oh well. I was holding off on Radament and the sewers, so not sure where that puts me, in Lut Gholein, not that it matters that much. I might start another character in this tourney...if I do, I'm thinking a passive zon.

Aw, dang it. I've been sucked back in. I feel a vanilla melee char *should* be able to do better than A2 (although having said that, if DeadTwoA dies in normal maggot lair, there is no coming back).

I started a melee pally, DeadThree, but he felt so fragile he is parked in A3 normal.

c_b, really sorry to hear about dying in an already cleared area. :( You know you can S&E in that case, right?

RIP for Freddie, Mounrblade. Cold Enchanted (or Fire or Lightning) is pretty nasty when it's on a beetle pack in my opinion. Not only are the boss's bolts CE but so are all the other beetles'! Ouch.

wakiki, I don't remember the mods that the boss had - I don't recall seeing Conviction or anything else, for that matter! I say one-shot, it may be the case that I was put in hit recovery and received the benefit of multiple lightning bolts, but it looked one-shot to me :)
Wish I felt like rejoining, I think I could do better, but my own D2 enthusiam is sporadic at best, so I will cheer from the sidelines for now.

Just for the record, AlreadyDead is still alive.

My lack of updates has been because she has not moved from where she was during my last update. Work got really busy before the Olympics as everyone brought in freight, etc. Then during the Olympics I was busy watching the Olympics. And after, I was really busy at work. Work is still really busy, but I do plan to continue her adventures at some point.

However, one thing has happened that I want to post about. I had to upgrade my D2 install to 1.13 to do some channel moderation testing after the patch.

- the old Stealthbot we were using no longer worked, so I had to upgrade it, and all the functions changed. So instead of constantly asking people in the channel to try the new functions, I just upgraded my own d2 install to 1.13 so I could join the channel and test them myself. -

None of my SP characters have been loaded into a 1.13 game, so I believe technically I could revert back to 1.12 and continue as they were. But realistically, I'm probably too lazy to actually do that... and I do want to upgrade to 1.13 anyway. So I may just end up loading AlreadyDead into 1.13 and continue her adventures from there...

Does anyone see a problem with this? If I do this, will I be cheating in the competition in some way? I realize IM will be gone, so it will be easier on my Merc on the way to Baal, so perhaps I'll lose some style points there, but my lazyness to downgrade is overpowering my urge for style points in that respect.

Hp. my own opinion is that you continue the adventure in 1.13. Although no IM means a slightly easier time, it isn't a deal breaker. All IM means is that you have to take a lot longer (and spend a lot of gold) nursing your merc past OKs - it isn't as if you have entirely removed the element of risk or danger from the game.

On style-points and increased HR chances, all I'll say is if you happen to have the runes for Enigma drop for you, you must Charsi them :D /joking

Just a small progress update for AlreadyDead.

I've been trying to bring myself to play her the last few weeks, but I'm pretty D2 burned out, so it hasn't been happening. But I did manage to sit down this morning and play her for a bit. I haven't played D2 for a month or 2, so I had to get used to the controls and hotkeys again - doing this with Frenzytaurs around while playing a very fragile character is not really the best plan - but we did manage to push past that. Luckily many years of playing D2 has ingrained some good habits into me.

The Glacial Trail rolled with Rot Walkers, Skeletons & the lightning Skeletons, so nothing difficult there, which was nice. The Skeletons were LI but they are also quite flimsy, so nothing a bit of Fire Blast couldn't deal with.

I generally do not enjoy the outdoor areas of Act 5, because they are usually filled with packs of nasty ranged monsters that cause gray hair and stress, but the Frozen Tundra rolled with Vulture Demons (pretty harmless), Baal's Minion (also pretty harmless) and the Lightning throwing Skeletons. The Skeletons were a bit of a bother, because they wouldn't hold still long enough to get Fire Blasted... but we manged to push through.

The optional area below the Frozen Tundra was a bit of a concern because of the Succubus and their Amp Damage, but a healthy amount of CoS and a lot of dodging made it safe (the treasure at the end was a bit of a let down).

When we got to the Ancients Way, things slowed down considerably. There was Quill Rats which are annoying because of their range and the poison, but the max block really helped out here. The other annoying part about Quill Rats is that their corpses don't do much damage when exploded, which was a problem, because the other 2 monsters were both LI. Tainted and Hell Lords. The Tainted could be dealt with by using CoS and the Lower Resist wand on switch (though it was awkward if there was a bunch of them). But the Hell Lords were tough. My merc could tank 1 of them long enough to kill it by breaking it's LI status with the Lower Resist wand and throwing a crap load of Fire Blasts at it, but Haseen took a beating during the process. If there was 2 or more Hell Lords, we had a serious problem. So we spent a lot of time Mind Blasting Hell Lords and trying to split them up into packs of 1 or 2 at a time while retreating. If there was 2 Hell Lords vs. us, I could generally convert one of them with Mind Blast and we could muddle through.

Anyway, to my delight, we found the WP before finding the stairs to the Arreat Plateau. So we could take a break there, since we won't be breaking the "no re-clearing areas" rule when we restart to clear the other half of The Ancient's Way.

A small part of me hopes that AlreadyDead will just die fighting the Ancients, so we can get this over with. I had forgotten how frustrating this game can be sometimes when you are relying heavily on your merc to be useful. But I've been playing HC for a long time, so a large part of me is devoted to not dieing. I am not sure if I will forge ahead to the Ancients this weekend, but there is certainly no avoiding it any longer... I'll have to do it at some point. Between Haseen and AlreadyDead we have no source of Crushing Blow, which is a problem...

Act 5 hell, no vitality and partial resists is about as painful as it gets in my books but the podium finish beckons. :thumbsup:
