The 1pt smiter guide to Uber Tristram v 1.0.

good, b/c i don't have pcomb gcs. lol. I have +1 def. auras lol. What's good defense for a 40s plate? And do you know much it would cost to get one? I can probably make a fortitude faster than I could trade for one.

thanks

500+ is a good idea

550+ even better

can be expensive if 15% edef....and an archon plate =P

keep an eye out for dusk shrouds/archon plates....those work well

Dusk, wyrm, scarab, archon, wire fleece, great hauberk. These are light armor and all work nicely for fortitude. Sacred armor is great option for pvp zeal for the defense (and there are certain setups that allow you to equip it with base str around 120)

gz @ kingdryland for this guide

My lvl 81 smiter got the first torch today (dru 10/20), soloed from keys to torch. Heavens/GA/hoz/gore/verdungo/dracul's/mara - no pala skillers/no pala torch.

Very good guide!

thx kingdryland! :flowers:

My own ubers: part 2

My pala is doing just fine. Did around 7 solo runs from keys to torch. Tying to twink my gear, here is what I found:

- uped my HoZ - some smite +dmg, but nothing crucial, I don't regret this anyway coz I like as much dmg as I can get, not to mention the extra def

- changed GA for a fresh-traded Forti - man, now THIS is a difference! Traded 4 ists for it and now, after my first run with this baby, I would trade twice and still not cry about it. Huge difference! Huge!

- with GA I had all my resi up to 90, with Forti I lost that but (and this should be a BIG BUT) I felt more secure (a.k.a. I died just once in all the run); so was not the elemental damage that was killing me

- I'm now tradeing all my torches for a Grief, just to test this one too

And, as a bonus, I just got my first pala torch. Finaly, the prize worth the fight! I can't tell you the feeling you have when you slash your way from keys to your first pala torch. Try it :wink2:

My pure "economical" advice: save for a Forti. Forget about PC (I have none and I'm doing just fine), forget about anything else. Just save up rune after rune, upgrade those runes, get your ISTs and enjoy the power of this armor.

Once again: thx kingdryland! for this guide :flowers:

More on Mercs

I've seen some discussion about mercs here, but not as much as I would have liked. I've always gone by the theory that a melee character should use a ranged merc, while a ranged character should use a melee merc (or, to be more specific, an act 2 merc, since the barb mercs are not very efficient overall). I've always been pretty satisfied with my act 3 cold mercs, although I am experimenting with Act 1 Rogues as well.

So, anyway, my primary Paladin has an Act 3 merc. What are your thoughts about the best way to equip him? My thinking has been to give him stuff with Ignore Defense or a reduction in target defense, to make his cold skills that much more effective, with Chance to Cast skills an added plus. I'm currently wanting to try Crescent Moon on a phase blade (10% ctc lvl 17 Chain Lightning, 7% ctc lvl 13 Static Field, with ITD and an additional reduction to lightning resist), and I've even got a 3os phase blade saved for that purpose. This would mean that I'd be getting both cold and lightning damage from my merc.

reality checked

I just had a reality check...that is...there is no fort runeword on snl. I'm going to make stone then instead, which is a good idea for the fanat. zeal character build for ubers, right? Oh, and how much dex do I need to add b/c I don't know what it means when you said "add dex for max block"

thanks

Don't bother with the crescent moon. Act 3 merc virtually never swing their swords. Use dual spirits or something like that instead. +skills, FCR, +cold% are of importance here.

So that would prevent the CTC from kicking in? I guess I would have to find the CTC in helm/armor/shield then. I'll still make the runeword, it should still be useful, even if the character uses it as opposed to the merc.

So what specific weapon would be a good choice then? I've not seen too many swords with FCR.

CtC only kicks in when he attacks with a physical attack, or is being struck. Since he rarely (if ever) swings his sword, CtC on striking is useless. Since he is not supposed to get hit, CtC when struck is also useless.

As for casting swords, I just mentioned one: Spirit

+skills, +mana, etc, and require junk runes.

The CTC wouldn't kick in, HOWEVER, if you have a lightning A3 merc the -res WILL help. He'd be better off with a 30/30 lightning crystal sword, comparably, but that'd be insane expensive.

Spirit is also another awesome option, and a GREAT deal cheaper. The +skills will work out beautifully, and the fast cast is sweet. Too bad the mana doesn't help him, though.

You haven't seen much discussion because this is basically a guide for ubers and mercs usually die too easily in tristram to be of any help. Therefore you shouldn't rely on them.
Before patch 1.11 came,I never bothered to keep a merc alive for my paladins because ,frankly they don't need one, especially when they die so often. No matter how much I like South Park ,babysitting my own Kenny is not fun at all.
With the new patch,I finally use mercs but it goes like this: They die and stay dead until I level so I resurrect them and wait for them to level. They usually die shortly after and I don't resurrect them. They are a liability around nihlathak too.

I need Help with this!

I posted a msg a few days ago and nobody replied to it...so here it goes again. I made a pally like u said...I have max zeal, fanat, holy shield, & sacrifice. I have about 180 stats left because I don't know how much Dexterity i need. I read what you said "add enough dex. for max block" that's like a lingo to me, i had no clue what that meant. What do I do? Oh, and I may be getting Hoz...I'm hoping that I will be able to see what uber trist is all about.

Activate holy shield and check your character screen. Slide the cursor on the defense box. Your chance to block will appear and it should be 75%,which is max. There is no fixed dexterity points to achieve this. Your block depends on your level, your shield, your dexterity and the increased chance to block items (guardian anger for example) and skills (holy shield). Hoz will require something like ~130 dexterity after gear around level 90.

Huh

I just traded a lot of stuff to get Hoz....so I should add up to 130 in base dex or have total dex 130 with gear? confused... I don't want to lose any more points than i have to, ty.

Mercs and such

I've been playing since roughly 2001, online since I achieved broadband in 2003, ladder this season, after roughly a year away from the game. I played paladins exclusively prior to this ladder season, when I first tried a 'Zon as an MF character (she really helps - got me my HoZ on a drop during my first week playing Hell level). The 1.10 expansion of available runewords has radically altered my longterm gameplan, but I still see no reason why a merc can't be productive, if equipped properly. With that said, there are a few instances where the mercs do tend to die quickly, and in such circumstances I just play on. I have not reached that point with my Paladins yet, but then again I haven't seen Uber Tristram yet either. I have done Uber Diablo once, and indeed the merc (for my 'Zon) died quickly, but at the time he was vastly underequipped. But in most instances right now my Zon's Act 2 Defiance merc survives most battles (been doing Hell Baal runs lately) and can be quite helpful (of course, the presence of the Valk helps with that too).

I just traded a lot of stuff to get Hoz....so I should add up to 130 in base dex or have total dex 130 with gear? confused... I don't want to lose any more points than i have to, ty.

This is where it helps to know what gear you are going to have before you commit points. Really, you can adjust dex as you go, using the mouseover check of Defense/Chance to Block level to see if you need more dex or not. I think that if you make sure the base level is up to snuff, and then your equipment ends up taking you a bit over where you thought you would be, it's not going to really hurt you in the long run, especially if you end up switching equipment pieces here and there (i.e. swapping Gulliame's Helm for Crown of Thieves).

Congrats on picking up a HoZ, and good luck on your efforts.

Put it this way. Mercs stands practically no chance in conviction. Another thing that they might do is to lure all 3 ubers out when you can lure them 1 by 1. I wouldn't bring a merc even if they can survive.

Of course, the other thing that I would have to consider is that in most cases, you aren't taking on the ubers all by your lonesome. Most discussion I've seen involving the ubers also involves a party, ideally a party with a nice balance of skills. So there wouldn't be as much necessity for a merc.

The point of this guide, and many others, is to solo the ubers. It's the most sure fire way that you can hog the torch yourself. If I ever do Ubers with anyone else, it would be me helping them, and will not involve my own keys. I can tell you that the last thing I want is to have more than 1 ubers on me. Since I don't have a CtA, it is entirely possible that if there are enough stuff around me, they can kill me in between my smites, and having 2 ubers next to me doesn't help at all.
