The 1pt smiter guide to Uber Tristram v 1.0.

Hi guys, im very new to this forum but interested in this build.

Currently im lvling a new smiter just for this build, but i have some questions when it comes to the gears involved.

Firstly i have only 1 of the following rune, Ber, Sur, Lo, Ohm, Vex and 2 or more of the following Gul, Ist, Mal, Um, Pul. Tons of the lower runes.

My concern is mainly about the weapon, shield and armor involved
Should i go for
1)Grief, COH, Exile
2)Grief, COH, HoZ (Pdia)
3)XXX, Forti, Exile or HoZ

Secondly, i need some comments on deciding between CoH or Fort armor for ubers. Is the 200% EDmg to Demons or the 300% ED from fort better?

Lastly note that i have zero prior exp with ubers and this char is needed for ubers. So i really hope that this char will be able to clear UT on solo.

I also had 0 experience from uber-runs, followed this guide back in the bit of older days, and managed to get my hands on the cheapest **** I could find (wasnt rich at all that ladder-season, was my only char I had also)

Grabbed a Treachery (fade) I procced in a fire befor entering u-trist.
Socket Body Armor Shael + Thul + Lem

The runes was what I had, and compared to anything else it was the best way to max my res even with the nasty aura up vs me.

I was so eager to fight but my gear was lacking.. heck I gave it a try.

The only real needed thing is the survival and the gloves that give you life, CB% and such will solve itself as long as you can survive and keep your hp up. ^^

Even with ****-gear I managed, was a bit more hefty, even died once or twice until I understood the encounter (I was too brave for my own good)
After that, and when you started getting items.. there was no issues what so ever, I was so confident I just went in there, whacked everything, and then got out, this was even befor I got the better gear-parts also. :D

I built a smiter last night, haven't had a chance to do a UT run with him yet though. I did a few test runs through other areas of the game like Chaos Sanctuary, etc. He didn't seem particularly strong - big groups of venom lords hurt heaps. Is my gear ok?

Guillaume's Face
Death phase blade
Upped HoZ with perfect diamond
Life tap wand on switch
Chain of Honour great hauberk
Thundergods
Dracul's
Gore Rider
35@ Metalgrid
Raven Frost
Dwarf Star
Torch

I'm a bit skeptical about whether or not he will survive. Is it worth using a wizardspike? Or putting a point in salvation?

Adding up your resists:

69 - Upped HoZ with perfect diamond
65 - Chain of Honour great hauberk
35 - Metalgrid
20 - Torch (best case scenario here)
30 - Anya Quest x3
-100 - Hell mode

I come up with 119 resist all. That works great until Mephisto's Salvation hits you with -125, dropping you to -6 resist all. Negative resists in Uber Tristram are painful. You can spend a hard point in Salvation to cover that, or you can get there with equipment.

IMO Salvation is a poor option as it restricts your offensive output and burns a valuable point.

A Wizardspike gets you to 69 resist all, but now you've sacrificed offensive output again by going with a slow crappy weapon.

I would suggest a socketed Kira's instead. This would allow you to keep your offensive aura, weapon, and you get CBF and great resists. An Um'ed 60 res Kira's gives the same resists as a Wizzy, while an Um in a 65+ Kira's gets you to 75 resist all after Meph's Conviction. Losing the crushing blow from Guillame's will make your run only slightly longer, but with Kira's resists you have a much better chance of surviving the run. Mid-range Kira's are pretty cheap as well.

Cool, thanks. I'm pretty sure I have a Kira's lying around somewhere, will have a look for it.

I gave it a shot last night, and wow he was incredibly weak. Killed Duriel with no problem, but Lilith raped me. I cast life tap straight away, but I barely lasted 5-10 smites before I died.

Followed this guide and it worked excellent. However, I don't understand why recommended belt is TG etc and not Nosferatus. Nosferatus slows target, increases attack speed and ll + mana after kill.

Comments?

I think it's because many people feel the lightning absorb, 10% increased lightning resistance, and 20 vitality are more useful. I don't know if the slows target works on Ubers anway. Different people have different styles. Personally I prefer Nosferatu for the IAS but understand why people would choose T-god's or Verdungo's.

Went with a semi expensive gear setup using a grief pb, hoz and a gloom, and must say, unless I am one shotted, the ubers go down very easily :) Normally go together with the mrs on her druid, she lures them out one by one, and I bash them to pieces with smite, seems to work wonders.

Thanks for a nice guide!

I Read This Guide 4 Times Completely.
I Did All The Exact Stat/Skill Distributions.
I Bought All The Gear For Increased Damage Under Your Richest Summary.
I Do Nowhere Near 4.5k - 5k Damage.
I Barely Do 1k - 1.2k Damage.
I Have No Clue What i Am Doing Wrong.:weep:

While I'm not sure of the details regarding smite, I do know that the character screen quite frequently is wrong, this might be your problem.

I'm also interested as to whether there is anything about this guide which would have changed over the years since this guide was first written. As well as which belt would be best, seems like there are 3 options at the moment.

@SSGoten: Yes, there is a display bug relating to Grief's +damage.

Nothing that's important to the build has changed. Since Thundergod's light absorb (along with maxed light ) basically nullifies the most dangerous part of doing Ubers (and if you're well equipped the only dangerous), namely Meph's light attacks, I don't see why you'd use anything else. It's not absolutely neccesary though, you can do fine with strings/dungo's. Or IK if you lack light res.

hey guys iv started diablo again 2months ago and always wanted a smiter... so i made one but i have a few issues id like to ask about... ok lets start with my equip and its cost me all i have to get...

Hi aria,

Mf has nothing to do with torch roll it's totally random (with numbers generated from uniform distribution).

My din has very similar setup as yours except that I use um'ed Guillaume's Face and um'ed HoZ (instead of Shako and Exile). I have a couple of res charms instead of lifers for stacked resists. He has only 1200 life before bo but still walks in Tristram and destroys everything in 1 minute without being touched.

My guess is that your resist is not stacked enough.

First swap out that shako. If you lack resists a Kira's is also good otherwise nothing beats Guillaume's Face for the crushing blow.

Second, is that Exile made with a resist base? If an ED/AR base then it provides no resists at all which is very bad for ubers. The stacked ctc LT imo is not necessary with Drac's and that extra defense is not important either. Exile is very much overrated considering it's 100 times more expensive than HoZ especially for ubering.

I also use AP enigma since I run dkeys with him but if resists is still a problem for you consider switching to COH.

Rules of thumb, get more crushing blow from GF so you kill faster, and get stacked resists so you stay safe under Meph's conviction aura (don't forget to turn your salvation aura on when facing Meph).

Remaining is only more practice.

Cheers.

I will start by saying, I have read ALL 310 pages. If you have a question, I gaurantee you can click on ANY page and withing + / - 5 pages (being generous here) your question will have been asked and answered. That is why there are so many pages. Most people are too lazy to research. JUST LOOK. IT'S NOT FAR AWAY!!! Sorry, ehem, now that I got that out. I would like to Thanks Kingdryland for this guide. I played d2 on single player exclusively, and after beating the game with every type of character, the only thing left was uber trist. I was about to make a pure smiter because I was told they are one of the few that could solo. I didn't really plan on relying on others, so smiter it would be. As I was looking up the gear for a smiter, I stumbled across this guide and found it would be way better suited for crowd control. I will warn that this post will be long, but it will most likely answer many questions.

If you are wondering if your build can solo ubers, ask yourself a few questions:
Do I have dracs and gores?
Do I have maxed block?
Do I have at least 1300 life?

If you answered yes to all 3, you can get it done. You may die once or twice, but it will can be done. HC player, excuse my ignorance, but you may be able to take something from this too. (just not the part about dying)

We all know to max sac, fanat, zeal, and holy shield, 1 pt salvation. One of the most annoying questions: Where do I put extra skill points? Answer - Defiance. Thats it. Don't do blessed aim. And for F*CK SAKE, don't put them into SMITE!!! 1 pt smiter is not a 7 or 12 pt smiter. It's a 1 pt smiter. I haven't tried any other utiliy skills. If you wanna try them, do so. Vigor could help, but I just have charge hotkeyed.

Another one that gets me. My damage is only xxxxx. The answer, which has been beat to death is that the screen is taking the damage from just a phaseblade. It doesn't see the +damage mod from grief. I personally have shown someone who didn't believe me. I told him the set up. He had an azwerath (I am not looking up the spelling). We went to the River of Flame. I used his az first and zealed a crowd. Then, I used my lightsaber (which is a fantastic weapon for poor btw, more later). Lastly, I used my grief. I asked him if he noticed the difference in killing speed. He agreed. My zeal damage with fan on for lightsaber was 2k-2500 ish. With grief it is 1k ish. Grief owns everythin but phys immunes.

I started with nothing to make follow this guide. Just starting out, I got lucky in some trades and got dracs and gore cheap and early on. My dracs were crappy lifeleech stated one, but once lifetap procs, it doesn't matter.

The first run I did with a group, my setup was something like dracs, gores, random helm or mid range kiras (most likely kira (anaother fantastic helm for poor)), duriels shell armor, tgods, din slayer, dirt shield, highlords, random rings (maybe a raven). We were all in town, an I entered the portal to uber Izzy and started smiting away and I had him to 1/4 life before others entered. The other smiter in the group mentioned that I had it covered without him. NOTE: It is slow with crap equip.

After amassing a little bit of equip, I was now looking like kira, smoke, lighsaber, gores, dracs, HOZ (borrowed until I got my own for like a pul or an ist), tgod, highlord, raven, dwarf. Look closely at this setup. The only cb I had was 15% from gores. I was able to manage. At some point I got some dirt 1 bo cta that pushed me to a whopping 1700 health (that I have now as base...hahaha)

I was able to obtain a dirt grief for cheap. I have not had reason to get better because it is quoted that the worst roll on grief wil be devastating. It is. New setup.

Kira, Duress (a little mor cb and more res than dshell, but not as much as smoke), grief, hoz, dwarf, faven, tgod, highlords, switch cta and spirit (mind you a 1 bo). And at some point I made a trechery for fade.

I soloed with this setup quite well. I did die a few time stil learning stuff. Eventually I rolled a 4 bo cta. That was nice insurance. I was in the 2k range with health now. Ubers went down a little faster also.

After aquiring a few more things, my newest gear setup is: um'ed guil, COH (I like it and I like the res better than fort), hoz (still haven't socketed anything in it), grief, dracs, gores, raven, dwark, tgod, a new 6 bo cta (bought) with spirit on switch. This setup rocks. It didn't take me a rediculous time to amass it all because basically all my wealth has gone into this guy. I have around 3k health after bo.

I will address a couple more issues:
1 - Lilith hits hardest. Hence 1300 life needed. She will 1 shot you. Good luck. If you have low health and get amped, run to town and talk to malah before engaging. Soomeone asked about the den and taking on witches. They hit hard. If you can get in there and zeal them, do stop or you will die. Take your time, always have a retreat, and don't think twice about drawing a few out at a time to thin a big crowd down. I don't like to run into the little room that Lilith is in (even if my barb friend BO's me and I have 4k health). I get her attention and then run so she will follow and I don't have to take her in a crowd, get amped, and get smoked. NOTE: Maybe it's me, but lifetap seems to always take the longest to proc when I am smiting Lilith.

Next isssue: Don't up HOZ. Not needed. Get a grief. You will kill fast. Asked, answered, case closed. Don't wasted the extra str point for a few hundred more damage.

Another issue: Last Wish vs Grief? GRIEF!!! Case closed. I had the privelage of knowing someone well enough to trust me to give backt eh LW he was tring to trade. At the cost of 3 bers and a ..... another HR, you can spend half or a 3rd of that, get a grief and be just fine. If you read through that debate, you will hear that after 1/4 health, the extra crushing blow is ineffective. This is true. This is a placebo effect when it comes to killing the uber bosses. Well, this weapon is really expensive, has loads of crushing blow, so it must be better, right? Wrong. The time you save taking the majority of the boss' life away up frony fromt he high CB gets made up when it takes 20 seconds to finally get that last little hairline sliver of life to go away. Greif does consistant damage and works all too well.

I had 1 questions that in 300 pages was never really answered. Does tri elemental resist prevent you from needing to stack your resists as much? Answer: NO. I got killed by meph before. It does help a ton, and you can see from my most recent setup, I am still runing tri-sorb.

Poor people. I will express that when I was poor, I loved my lightsaber. It was cheap, and like grief jr. It's slower, but kills phys immunes faster than grief. The only thing to be careful of in lester de whatever in chaos. His fanatic aura will surprise you. You won't kill his minions fast enough if you get swarmed. Draw a few out at a time.

Another question that is a legit one. Can this build key run? YES and NO. You can do countess pretty easily, but it's slow. Some PI's but you can run from them. Arcane sucks cause more PI souls (forget name), and if you get swarmed, you're dead. Hall = more PI most of the time. Vipers are tricky. If you do decide to go into kill nilly, get a nature's peace ring. The slain monsters RIP will negate his corpse explosion. I tried making a javazon for nilly, and found that my newest character, an orb / chain lightning with a full tals set and wearing a natures peace makes key running quite easy while I am mfing. I know this may not be an option at first, but consider it. Infinity make this really easy. (I know it costs a fortune though)

I think that's all I have for now. GL. If you have the 3 things I mentioned, you should be able to get the job done.

I think I have enough resists for ubers, and good gear overall, but I'm wondering if it would be worth to put an ith rune in the guills, instead of um or leaving it empty.

Or else I'm thinking about using Carrion Wind as second ring, instead of mana leech. But with an ith rune in the helm, I can use a resist ring or something other juicy there. any thoughts on what I should do?

Is ith an ok choice? I don't want to waste purples just because of mana, want to keep them for life panics.

mana leech doesn't work with smite anyway. Ith or damage to mana jewel is nice, but not essential. Keeping a line of blue pots in your belt does the trick. Smite barely costs any mana so you only need to worry about it with baal, and it shouldn't take more than 4 blue pots to get baal dead (if it does, you can always use a juv).

Anyway ith is nice if you don't need the resists from the um.

Mana is only a problem with Baal. Honestly I would just have a row of mana potions and put an um in the guillaumes (if you need res). An Ith couldn't hurt but I would rather just switch belts to Tal Rasha's once Meph is dead, that will solve all mana problems.

Personally I don't even have to deal with it. I spawn Meph using the rock trick. Once he's dead and his minions are dealt with, I just walk slowly up from the rock into tristram. If you do it slow enough Baal will teleport on top of you. Just start hitting him. He will begin to attack you, and thus will never have an opportunity to summon his minions. This works perfectly since by himself he doesn't mana burn often enough that you run out, its his ghosts that are usually the problem. Not to mention they always get in the way and make life miserable. The only drawback to this strategy is that Diablo will probably join in mid fight. I don't mind, I just recommend people switch amulets to Rising Sun after killing Meph. With maxed resists the fire absorb on that amulet is ridiculous, Diablo's armaggedon and his pit lords fire attack will heal you, you don't even need life tap.

Just my recommendations. An ith will solve your problem i guess but it wouldnt be my first choice

The mana issue is easy to solve. Either have a row of blues in the belt like I used to do, or just keep smiting. If you get burned, you should recover mana fast enough to keep smiting and not die. A row of blue would be extra insurance if you have somespecters around you when smiting Baal. If you stop smiting and your life goes down, hit a pot. Like I said, I tried it one before, with my finger hovering over the #4, and if I stopped smiting, it was only for 1 swing of a normal attack and back to smite. I don't even bother bringing any blues with me now. I only ever need 1-2 juvs at most just in case stuff goes wrong.
