Looking back over the thread, I have yet another question about the rules.


You later ruled that it was perfectly fine to S&E out of the Drifter Cavern and try again, so that obviously does not count as part of the TP restriction.

So this is the way I understand it: when in the Drifter Cavern or facing the Ancient Kaa, if I decide that I can't make it (say, I am stuck like Krupa was, or am unable to dent Kaa's health bar, like Slog), it is perfectly fine for me to S&E and try again. If I TP to town first, though, then S&E and try again, I am disqualified. That was Slog the Frog's error. Is that correct?

For the deathmatches and other Labors where TP'ing is not allowed, you may not TP back to town, reload on potions, health and mana, revive your merc, repair your weapon and then TP back and continue the fight. That is different then an S&E ; the S&E allows you to repeat the attempt to defeat Kaa, Duriel, etc, in the "death-match" mode.

Honestly, if you TP'ed back to town, and then S&E'ed, I would say that doesn't disqualify you. What I do say is that if you TP back and forth between the fight and town, then that does not count as completing the Labor.

Question:
You said we can't return to a previous difficulty after we complete it. I assume that we can still run baal if we want as long as we haven't entered NM yet?

The rule is that once you have advanced to a higher difficulty, you are not supposed to return to a lower difficulty level. Killing Baal or killing the Cow King does not "complete the difficulty level," it is the act of moving from Normal to NM that completes the Normal difficulty level.

I honestly don't care about what I did; I am not trying to defend Slog the Frog. If I play another character, though, I want to be clear about the rules, and I am sure others want the same.

jd, if your Barb's victory over Ancient Kaa came after an S&E, then it did count.

The answer to all three of your questions is Yes. If you S&E in the middle of a Labor, you may attempt the challenge/Labor again.

I'd say the S&E on the ancients is the same as a reroll.. In the other labors you get all the difficulties of a new map, new monsters and a boss on full health, but on the ancients all you have to do is run to them and check their mods. What's so different about popping a TP or hitting escape and run back to the surface of the mount?

Anyway, it's not bothering me, I'm going to prepare all my fights and do them once. I'm preparing for Duriel and if I run out of potions, gear or strategy to kill him then I'm going to stand tall, run like a little girl, try whatever I can but in the end probably bite the dust. I'm not going to S&E if I can't dent Kaa.. I'm going to find a way of OW, poison, damage whatever I need and then probably die.

I'm hoping to get to lvl 24 before taking on Duriel although leveling is going pretty slow. My cyclone armor is beginning to show it's effect (currently level 11) by letting me kill the normally annoying beetles without taking any damage. Hopefully it'll be enough to tank some cold damage from Duriel and Diablo!

I'm with you Sint, I know that S&E to avoid death is not specifically mentioned in the rules but that is still the rule I live by in HC. I won't be re-rolling ancients by S&E. But the rules are the rules, so others can do whatever they want. From what you said it seems as if JD is still in (which does not bother me at all)

I agree on the S&E stuff. Hopefully my experience with the Ancient Kaa will help give some other participants ideas so that they can be prepared for the fight the first time through. :)

I fourth the consensus on S&E RE Labors like the Ancients. Glad to hear that JD is good to go :thumbup:

Update:

Heracles decided to take on the 3rd labor! At first, he thought it might be a bit premature, and indeed the fight was as difficult as expected, but after about 4-5 minutes Heracles prevailed over Diablo. And Wirt got his revenge :alright:

Heracles was lucky enough to score a 3os leg the first Tristram run, and went the 3 Tal route. This was quite unnecessary as the final blow was much easier than anticipated since Mace Mastery much imporved his AR and Dmg (+ Str @ 100), as well as using BA from the merc and Concentration. After using the rare maul found from Mephy earlier to get big D down to a semi-sliver, Heracles safely ran away to re-equip Wirt's leg. The fight went so quick in the end that the merc never even got to hit big D on the return to battle. Good thing though as Heracles was so caught up in bloodlust that he forgot to order his merc to die/unequip before completing the Labor.

The two most useful items for this battle ended up being a rare +1 Combat Skills (Barb) circlet gambled for back in Act3 being saved for such an event, and +1 to Warcries Maul on switch.

Having a massive life pool (~675 after BO) and 75/75/75/69 res for the fight made this harrowing encounter quite docile compared to previous confrontations.

Heracles went ahead and snagged the WP for Frigid Highlands, reaching lvl 33 before retiring for some well deserved rest. Looking forward to the Glacial Trail & Drifer Cavern Labor to use Howl :)

Yes! I killed /p8 Duriel!
Here and here are pictures.. I didn't get any more because it was so tense... I'm glad to report that my strategy paid off. Cyclone armor absorbs Duriel's attacks! I went straight in and tanked him while my merc, ravens, snake and wolf wittled him down. At first I tried to cast tornado's bu after about 1/4th of his health down I noticed that it took too much mana and I was burning health potions on the merc while duriel kept knockme me back and then taking out the minions one by one. I decided to slowly but steadily resume tanking and refill my belt with mana-pots going the way I decided on in the first place. Well... reloading my belt cost me a rejuv or two, but I was getting better at placing Duriel (in the end he had me pinned against the wall by knocking my merc back every time and then following me again) and then I just stood back ocasionally hitting him and just recasting Cyclone armor over and over again. About half my inventory of mana pots were consumed, but it worked and the big bug bit it :thumbsup: Not a very decent drop seeing I shopped a boneshield with +5 all res and 17 fhr.. Oh well.. I'm just thrilled I got past p8 Duriel :whistling:
Now let's see if act 3 and 4 are a smooth ride as I expect and then prepare for Diablo...

Wow, I didn't realize Cyclone Armor worked against Duriel. That's good news for my character.

If you don't mind my asking, how much damage was your Cyclone Armor absorbing? And how much damage was that Tornado doing?

Tornado wasn't doing much (it did wonders in the tomb though because of multiple hitting monsters), 56-79 dmg. Cyclone armor absorbed 209 dmg and by recasting it I only had to pop some reds and quite a few blues instead the other way around :)

AWorkingStiff continued on to act 5, I decided to stop pumping spear and start pumping prison for the prison and shield synergy. I wanted to get it up pretty good for the deathtrap in the drifter cavern. I made it up to level 45 on pindle and Nihl.
Headed down to the Glacial trail, and this is what ensued: The Trail part was pretty easy and I found the exit quickly and without major incident. I fully intended to drop down to /p1 for this but realized that I had forgotten...oh well at this point. I was pretty sure I knew where the chest was on the map so I headed for there...I was wrong of course. The biggest problem was the witches that were pretty good at keeping up with me. I was on the last stretch heading to the chest, as I now knew where it was. things got to bogged up and I had to retreat to make some room. Went back into a corner and made a stupid attempt to prison some witches...Oops! Yes, that is me inside that bone prison with my cell-mate the witch! grrrr! had no choice but to stand there and take my punishment like a man for 24 seconds until the prison poofed. by that point the area had gotten pretty swarmed and it was a tight squeeze to get out of there. At last...the chest :) It did drop me a nice DOL, and I found another later in the act, so I just need to hit up countess for that IO! Also still looking for a shael to make a nice shield out of, but I may go splendor if I get a lum first, we will see.

Nothing else too eventful happened, did a few baal runs and ended the act at level 49.

Duriel is dead at the hands of Stone the barbarian. When I started the play session all I had to so was the CS and Duriel. I decided to shop a bit first though. Bought a gloves of fortune (24%mf) and a 3os breast plate which I quickly placed 3 flawed Topazes. My mf total is ~115% now. While questing in act 2 I found a coif of glory (never seen one before) and a duskeep. I was happy about the duskeep mostly for the 15 to all resistances and 7PDR. My merc is wearing it currently because I'm still using the circlet of luck. When its time for meph I'll switch over. Anyway, onto what happened.

I managed to pick the correct CS path which never happens for me. He was a pushover like always. I wanted to snag one more level before Duriel and see if I could find some useful items. I had one near death experience clearing out the false tombs. I was battling out a boss pack in a corner and didnt notice a shrine was sitting right there. Well, I accidentally click on it and fireball nova comes shooting out and drops me to 1/4 my life. I'm not convinced I would have survived that if I didnt have Battle Orders. I decided to shove 15 of my unused stat points to vitality at that point.So, I get my level and decide to fight Duriel. I didnt really see myself losing the fight. Ihave ~370 HP with BO and shout gave him ~50% chance to hit me. I pop some thawing potions and rush in their (inventory full of pots of course. My merc outdamages me so I decided to tank. I made sure to have battle cry up at all times. This fight was a prime example of why I need cannot be frozen. I will be making a Rhyme shield ASAP (going 2H until then). I managed to snag the killing blow and Duriel dropped me Isenharts sword and the seperent lord staff.

I'll take on act 3 at p1. I greatly despise this act and hope it goes by quickly.

OK, thanks. Trevor's Tornado is already about at that level. Cyclone Armor is only at 150 currently but I think it will be up around the level you had at the time Trevor faces Duriel.

Trevor just made it to the Canyon of the Magi at clvl 26. I'd like to level up to 30 for Duriel so as to have Summon Grizzly available.

I'm enjoying all the postings and relieved that we've gone two days without anyone asking me for a rules clarification. :highfive:

Regarding S&E, I actually agree with all the comments made. Unfortunately I worked myself into a corner with the rules where S&E can be used to re-roll the Ancients -which is not what I originally intended. Like the others who have commented, I intend to try to do the Ancients and all the tasks without an S&E. But if I get to a point in one of the labors where my character is surrounded and can't move, or has run completely out of potions - well, I'm not sure that allowing my character to die will be what I choose to do.

I was trying to gamble a poleaxe but they wouldn't show up in the gambling screen, so I reluctantly clicked on a trident and, incredibly, got this:

I killed my Normal /p8 Fire Tower in two hits! I'm sure the NM and Hell Towers will be more of a problem - otherwise I've guilty of having created a really lame Labor!

AworkingStiff continued his journey into act 1 NM, Nothing was too challenging and I quickly made my way to the Underground passage, I did remember to drop the players setting this time, and I'm glad I did! Started off good with a nice linear map. Then it oppened up into a really ugly map. I ended up at the level 2 stairs first. The big area that I had passed through had 3 boss packs in it, but I got through it almost untouched the first time. Headed back through, but things had really gotten bogged up in there. After a few close calls I finally pulled through to the other side. Victory was not far behind.

I pushed on to the tower, and since I am a bonemancer, it should be obvious that I was looking for an IO. I leveled up from 49-51 on players/1 runs and never found that IO. I did however find 4 hels and a mass of other runes. So I cubed up to IO and made my white wand. Still looking for a base to put Rhyme in, but I certainly have plenty of runes for it now! The rest of the act went smoothly at /p8 and so did andy. She dropped a pair of frosburns, which I would have been excited about...If the countess hadn't already dropped them earlier!

Major update!
Last time I just killed Duriel at /p8 by (ab)using cyclone armor. Well.. that's basically the same all the way through act 5! I went on to /p1 act 3 cruising all the way getting tp the council where I level up to 30. It took some time but with myself tanking all the hydra's and taking most of the punishment it didn't took too many /p5 runs to get me to 30. After that I did another few runs to get used to hurricane which basically spelled out P W N D which I hope will continue into act 5. I put up hurricane and ran to Meph and tanked him down. Seriously, cyclone armor, block, a few red potions and hurricane on one side and a bear and the merc on the other side got Meph down quick enough to make me pummel the prt scrn button to get a screeny in time :shocked:
Then act 4 followed which was more of then same. Hurricane really takes over the monsters when they come in range. I got a rare poleaxe for my merc, a nagel and a duskdeep for myself and cruised on to the Hellforge. there my merc bit the dust for the first time in act 4 (which was surprising seeing how I got past Gloams, yay for cyclone armor), but after a quick TP I got ready to level some before taking on Diablo. Even the CS wasn't too hard seeing how Hurricane + no IM spelled out slow + easy monster and I level to 35 to be sure I got some advantage on the big D to bring him down. I "shopped" (damn 7 or 8 trips to Tristram) a 3 sock Wirt's leg and made it EthEthTal to be sure to be able to hit him with my ~400 AR. The fight was actually pretty easy, load up on mana pots, recast cyclone armor when Diablo casts fire or lightning hose and otherwise spam/hit/keep the minions alive untill he's low. I got a screeny just too late and as you can see my hurricane has probably killed him (shattered corpse), but I had been hitting on him for about 30 sec (turned green) using all my mana for cyclone armor.
So... Not that hard on the druid huh?! Cyclone Armor basically covered all the hardships so far and I'm looking forward to act 5. I have maxed my first skill and hopefully get to pump some damage skill now to get some smooth sailing into NM. That is... if I finish the Glacial Trail Death Trap. I have a way to get past it, and hopefully it works, but I don't know if my life will keep up with it. 100 vit still isn't that much....

Hooooo-Ray!!! Normal Duriel went down. :party:

Lizzie2 reached clvl26 clearing some false tombs, and I found a couple of nice items -including an Hzarus' belt. My major concerns were getting enough +mana and +life and red, blue and rejuv potions to last a long time with Duriel. I shed all of my MF gear and +%goldfind charms and loaded up with Cold Dam Res, mana, life, +damage and potions.

When I entered Duriel's chamber I threw a Plague Javelin, then weapon switched to my Razortine trident (-50% monster defense, 20% slow) and I used Charged Strike. For a while, Duriel's bar hardly moved -and I was thinking, OMG I'm going to die. But then my merc and I started making progress and we kept chipping away. I only used 2 full rejuvs about 3 red potions and a couple of blues (I had many more in my backpack) - the issue was never in doubt. Duriel died and dropped me a Bladebone Axe and, 4 rares and a blue. The Bladebone doesn't fit my character (or anybody's else's probably) but I always feel priveliged when Duriel drops me a Unique.

Well, I had been dreading that -now I can play A3 and only worry about not dieing and looking for Fire and Light Res and + damage items to help with the battle against Diablo. Also looking for FRW and +passive skills for the Drifter Deathtrap!

Quick question: I've forgotten: does Slows Missiles work on Act Bosses?

Act 3 is done without too much trouble by Stone the barbarian. I was cruising along 2handed a until I met the unique blinkbat in the sewers. I almost lost my life to that frost nova so I decided to take the 1H route. I made a 'Malice' flail and an Ancients pledge shield. This gave me enough resist all to where I could keep my MF gear on. The drop in damage was unfortunate but my merc is still rolling over monsters. It's funny. As soon as I made 'Malice' I found a PI unique in the Durance. I was going to skip it but figured I had the open wounds so why not? I was rewarded with:

Not sure when I'm going to take one Act 4. going to run Mephy for a bit to see if I can get a better weapon or armor. Oh! I forgot that I got a worthwhile ring from Ormus.
