Smite < Hammer?

Smite < Hammer?

This is for PvP only;

In what circumstance would you use Smite over Hammer? I can't think of a single matchup where I would use Smite instead of Hammer if I had both at my disposal (ala Vanquisher). Is there a single opponent that Smite is better against?

I guess its just..different, though a combination of hammers plus Smite with O/W was fun against ES sorcs.

If they're in your top-left region (or even top) in melee range, you hammer them.

If they're on your bottom right or below you, you smite them. After smiting them a few times, try to pop out a hammer. That will generally put them in range to get hit.

That was pretty much my strategy, or at least its basis.

It just seems redundant. Hammer is better than ANY melee out there. Smite is better than almost all melee, but there are a few matchups it can't win. Why would you get Smite when you could get something else to compliment your matchup vs ranged attackers? I just don't see how Vanquishers could beat good casters (let alone why you'd hinder yourself like that by neglecting any type of ranged attack.)

With my v/t I'm able to use my charge to weaken/kill a few casters; I'm assuming that a vanquisher will do even better with charge since it's being synergized by it's hammer points, so vanquisher is not range-less.

If you're using charge to kill casters then Vanquishers just appear to be inferior Liberators. Why have those points in Smite when you could have a stronger Hammer and Charge? I just can't see the point of Smite on any Hammer varient.

Well, a good melee player will be able to beat any kind of character with a smiter, including a hammerdin.

I hear range 5 anything > Smiters. Also Smiters can have a tough time against ranged attackers that they cannot catch.

explain how to kill a desynching hammerdin with smite and you'll be awarded the pally nobel prize for 1.10

I am not a very skilled player in tactics, so I am not able to do that.

Most pubbie hammerdins use "Auto Aim" and I noticed a trend with how it works. They always teleport right ontop of you. Start smite before they get near you, and you almost always will win. Obviously this is not 100% of the case as there are many variables, but usually smite wins out. Charge and allow open wounds to set in, rinse/repeat is another good fun tactic. A good hammerdin knows to stay away from smiters, but a good hammerdin don't use Auto aim either...I usually just tell the auto-aimers that its a hack that I use, and they leave me alone....

So back on topic;

Is there any time when Smite is better than Hammer? (The only reason I see to use Smite is that it requires less skill points, so for Hybrids that can't afford a strong Hammer, you're better off with a decent Smite.) But is there a time when Smite is actually BETTER than Hammer?

Hammerdins are actually the end result of all characters. Since 1.10 was released, I didn't know that there are other paladin types available. On my account the only skills I can put points into is Hammers, and its synergys. I only seem to have one offensive aura, and guess what...Its concentration. The other day someone told me that they have a defensive aura tree. I was shocked. I don't have one...I wrote a letter to blizzard, and they responded back:

Dear J:

We regret to inform you that since 1.10 has been released Hammer pallys have skyrocketed in popularity. Due to the current supply and demand situation for skills on the realm, we have had to discontinue all other skills/trees to allow for the expansive growth of this previously unherd of ability. This is our first step toward 1.11. Future changes will include discontinument of shapeshifting on Druids, as the only druid is a wind druid. We will also be changing the barbarian combat tree name to "Me Wack Things" tree, as the paladin has a huge monopoly on the "Combat Skill" name. beginning June, we will be removing all character classes from the game other than Paladins and Druids.

We thank you for your time and wish you the best with your future Hammer Pally and Wind Druid

I was so astounded that I sold all my items on ebay, and in the process of moving to Alaska to avoid the social backlash.

Honestly though, it all depends on taste on play style. I prefer smite. I used a hammer pally in 1.09 with smite. It did well...Im glad they amped up the damage on hammers so that most people cannot see any other use of any other skill.
