Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge

Quick update on GertrudeStein- she is still alive and has made it to the Ancient's Way WP. She completed the Anya quest and hasn't done the personalization quest and of course the Ancients are now looming large. I hope to get a chance to face them soon and believe I am well stocked for that, but they are always very dangerous.

Lowell has rescued Anya and made an attempt at Nihlathak yesterday. Going was fine until I got to the 3rd level of the temple. Had a rather unusual spawn of monsters (at least unlike anything I've ever seen): Ghosts (Physical Immune), Succubus (Physical Immune), and some kind of Doom Ape you see in Act3, that appeared ethereal and, although not listed, had a lot of physical immunity. Needless to say my army of Skeletons could do little against the horde that set upon them at the entrance to this level. Despite lots of Bone Wall and Amp, as well as an army of about 15 or so, I couldn't get a foothold and had to back out (I think the Merc and 3 of 10 Skels were the only other survivors). Might have been able to do it if I was a bit more prepared in my skill layout and used Decrep or more Bonewall, but I didn't want to chance going back down there, and I was getting tired of playing him anyway so I grabbed the WP and quit.

But something I was wondering about the entire time I was in the temple... we still have to complete all quests, right? I don't see why we would be exempt, since it was an original rule, but I'd just like to know before I venture back into Nihl's temple.

I'm sure there was an amendment, and that quest is no longer mandatory.

RULE CHANGE FOR ACT 5 HELL:

One thing that makes me most irritated with this game is that the pit vipers in Nihlathak's temple are insanely bugged. I'd hate for us to have come so far with six characters, only to have people die to bugs... the Ancients and WSK will be enough of a challenge.

SO... it is not required to do the Nihlathak quest. However, obviously, if you don't do the quest, you can't take advantage of the Personalization Reward... so if you find something terrific in Act 5, you might find yourself risking the vipers anyway. Up to you.

Listen, all of ye, to my tale of woe...

So I had a bad feeling when I realized that Olga, an assassin, would be my act 5 character. The last time I played an assassin in Act 5 hell, I got the dreaded "Line 422 unrecoverable error" every time I tried to go up against the hell ancients. The game freezes, you have to restart, you lose all your pots on the top of the mountain, etc. Worst of all, though, you just can't finish the quest in time... if it were possible to kill them and then get the error, no big deal. But it tends to be a long battle, and by the time you get halfway through.... freeze.

Anyway, I made it to the Ancients, and loaded myself up with my 36 rejuvs. My merc, shadow and I had a great first roll... no curses or vicious auras, only one lightning immune, nothing too scary. We had knocked the two non-lightning-immunes down to about half life when the merc bit the dust. No big deal... he was helpful, but the traps were doing the real work. More running around, more traps... the whirler is nearly dead...

Freeze.

Line 422.

So that's it. Olga is still very much alive, and a strong character despite the damage done to her along the way. She probably would have prevailed against the ancients, except for this stupid bug. But basically, there's not much I can do. I'm not out of juvvies, and very low on cash. Even if I attempted them again, I know I'd get the error. So there's not much point. Alas.

HOWEVER, this does present us with an opportunity for a tie-breaker, should it be necessary. We have two other players still in the running (by the way, folks... time will officially be up on Friday, March the 2nd at noon EST). If we have more than one guardian, then finishing Olga will be the tie-breaking challenge for supremacy.

Skunk - I thought you might have that problem, for which I do have a suggestion. If you are using Cloak of Shadows when fighting the ancients, then don't. I've had this problem myself, and I'm fairly certain that the bug is linked to that skill. If you aren't using Cloak, well then I'm just wrong and don't know what to tell you.

Well I was excited to see an update on this tourney, but disappointed by the actual post. Sorry to hear a glitch is holding you back SB. Hope you can get it figured out. I just wanted to let you know that I've already sent my stash back to you, so if you could keep it separate in case you needed to send it back to me. I should also have some backups just in case you can't. I've kept all my charms, pots and socketables quarentined from the rest of my items, so, should I need to play Olga again, I'll be good to go. What happens if all gaurdians subsequently gaurdian Olga:azn:?

I think I'll try Olga once more, without using CoS (if I can break myself of the habit!). We'll see how it goes. Of course, I don't have much in the way of juvvies left, since I lost them all when the game crashed... I think I still have 8 in my inventory/belt. Egads.

Sorry to hear about the game crashing during your battle- you don't have many potions left! I have hundreds of fat purples stashed up and would be happy to send you a pile if you would like.

I tried the ancients a few times but haven't killed them yet. I am being very cautious and bailing with TPs when things get rough (losing the merc, for example.) I haven't gotten a great roll on them yet, and I decided to level more before having another go at them. I hope to get a chance to play before the deadline- I didn't realize it was coming up so quickly!

Well, I could always change it, since there are just a couple folks left. No big deal. Tell you what... by the 9th of March, the tournament will end. So take your time.

Lowell's army of sturdy Skeleton Warriors, championed by the Mighty Jemali and the faithful Clay Golem, has vanquished Baal. It wasn't pretty, it wasn't quick, and it wasn't efficient, but I got him.

I'd just like to thank our wise host for a great tournament. It has been a long long time since I've played Hardcore, and I am genuinely pleased I made it through. When I found out I'd be playing Lowell for Act 5, I was still taking Olga through Act 4, and knew I could make it through the rest of the game if I managed to beat Diablo. I had played Lowell in Act 1 Hell, and knew he'd be boring but safe.

As he was a summoner, I would have given my left item slot for something with teleport, and I probably could have gotten an amulet through re-rolling, but I just didn't bother to take the time. Consequently, the outdoor areas of Act 5 were tedious. Actually had an interesting battle in the middle of the Frozen Tundra when something like 40 Imps converged on me with their beheamouth buddies as the catapults rained down. The ancients spawned without any real danger, just Amp, but I managed to take down the leaper as my revives timed out, and the others were down to 1/2 and 2/3 health, and the rest of the army finished the job. The whirler made me a bit nervous, being extra fast and deciding to come at me whimsically and sporadically. Lister was the first real wall I hit, and I thought I'd have to park him, but after a little regrouping his gang went down. When I got to Baal, well, it was boring. Between Clay Golem and Kelpie Snare, Baal became a little lethargic, and my Revives were pretty useless because the Skels were all too close. It took a long time and I just stood by andn watched, but he went down. He dropped me a Goldstrike.

Items I could not have made it through this tournament without:

Hsarus' Boots and Belt. Every single character used these two items. FRW, Fire and Cold Res, Enhanced Defense, and AR for the occassional melee character. Nothing else I had beat this.

Skin of the Viper Maji. Sounds like a lot of people had this item, and I'm sure you know why it was used. +Skill and resistance, and the FCR for the frequent casters played.

Lidless Wall. I socketed this in Normal Act 5 and stuck a pdiamond in it. Again, +Skill and resistance, FCR and mana. By the end it was all either casters or trappers, so this was big. Also had a Rhyme Shield, which I think GertrudeStein used for a while.

Kelpie Snare. Honestly, I can't believe how well this weapons worked, even in Hell. Granted, the Merc's kill speed was very slow, but the majority of Mercs I got were Holy Freeze, and that combined with the slow on Kelpie let the merc survive where he otherwise would not have. Socketed in NM Act5 with an Amn. The merc used Hwanin's Helm and Armor for a while, until I upped my Hawkmail (another crucial item) to give him CBF.

There were several others here and there, some good charms I found to fill in res or mana gaps, gloves I used Magefists mainly but also Laying of Hands. One-time wonders included a Cruel Hydra Bow of Ease (with a socket) on Gertrude in Hell, the Coldkill Hatchet for one of the few Barbs I played, and probably Civerb's Cudgel for the beginning of the game (love that +max dmg mod).

Notable finds that I could not use included IK Belt and Goreriders (and the Goldstrike is a pretty decent bow). I could have used the Ist I found from HF, but I think I'll just hang on to that one .

Anyway, I'll try to wrap this up. Lowell was a standard summoner, Max Skel warrior and Mastery, several revives (11 with my +Skills), a bunch in Corpse Explosion (18 I think with +Skills). There were a few random skill placements (Brak I'm looking in your direction...), but it's kind of hard to mess up a Summoner. He had low Str/Dex, and over 300 Vit when I finished him just a shade under lvl 83. Thanks again Skunkbelly and everyone who participated. You've gotten me used to Hardcore again (I currently have an untwinked Fire/Ice Zon in Act5 normal), allowed me to try out a few builds I've never played in the late game, as well as test my skills on some characters that had no business being alive in the late game. What a long, strange trip it's been.

Great to hear that Lowell made it to Guardian, JoeBruce! Congratulations!

I started Lowell and headed him down the summoner path. I had an Arm of King Leoric in my stash and that tipped the balance towards making a summoner, as non-exciting a build as they are. They are safe and I was hoping to get him again late in the game. Which I did- I had him in Hell Act 3 which was no problem at that point. I thought he was likely to make it all the way and it is great to hear that he did!

Congrats JoeBruce:thumbsup: . It appears as though the Necro had the advantage in this tourney (and I was lucky enough to play them 4 times). I'm surprised you were using Hsarus' Boots and Belt throughout the tourney. I guess I was lucky with my NM imbue, got some tri-res 20% frw boots. And congrats on the Ist, nice reward there.

It was impossible for me to mess up Lowell:tongue: . I nurtured him through Act 2 Hell, the summoner's most dreaded Act containing the Maggot Lair and Arcane Sanctuary. Also being so late in the game I only got three levels on him. These skill points went to the three poison skills, but for good reason. Imagine if you had come across any unbreakable fire/physical dual immunes. You'd be thanking me for level one synergized poison nova. And I added stats to dex just in case I got him back, since I had a wizspike. Actually Eliot was the Necro that I did the most damage to by far.

And I agree it was a fairly strange trip. Good luck with your zon.

Hats off to all of you. I have followed this tourny, after my death, with interest.

Good work.

(frankly, I would love to see it happen again)

I've followed this tourny as well...since my Join Date anyway  (yes...I actually read through most of the posts!)

I would like to see another one happen as well...(so I can join in )

Congrats on the Pat! :jig:

I shouldn't even mention this, since the Sequel just got started a couple weeks ago, and will be raging for the next two months... but there will be a third Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament tournament, and it will be even more evil than either of these. Character passing will be a factor again (since it's the major characteristic), but it will also involve another blast-from-the-past. I'll say no more.

Well...if this 3rd one require Uniques like this one did...the 2 months will give me some time to find some decent gear...

If it doesn't...it'll give me some time to get back into the swing of D2...

BTW...how do you come up with these things SB?
