Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge

As mentioned, with the sequel really only just started, it seems strange to talk about the one after that. However, iirc, there was quite a bit of interest in a tournament where you deliberately tried to make the char as useless as possible, in order to get the next guy out with an unplayable char. (Brak'ing, I think)

Sounds like a possible short-term fun thing ...

I had a tourney planned where the goal is to explicitely kill off all the characters. Have a backstory and rules etc. But SB's tourney's are so popular and fun that I've chosen to spend my D2 time in them. Maybe if there's enough interest and once SB's tourney gets rolling we can get a mini Pass It On going since I do think fewer people are as interested in (PvM)vP.

SB-If anything does get going, I'll be sure to PM you first so I don't pre-empt any of your ongoing ideas :thumbsup:

Gotta admit, I feel somewhat prideful, being I passed on characters to you for virtually the entire tournament. Guess I did pretty good, at least.
 
Wow, we've dropped back to page 5!

GertrudeStein has defeated the Ancients. This took a while- I tried numerous times at level 80, and that wasn't feasible, so I bit the bullet and visited Pindle to level for a while. I hate Pindle runs, and I've had some deaths there, but he is such a bundle of experience that that made the most sense. Level 81 was still not working against the Ancients, so I levelled more and faced them at level 82. Setting up for a battle took a fair amount of preparation- I am using the Treachery armor for both Gertude and her merc, so ideally I would be facing the ancients with both Venom and Fade active on both of us, a useful shrine active, and potions positioned. But I needed to reroll them many times, and then of course Fade would wear off, and so on. I had at least five epic battles where I had to bail with a TP after making good progress against them, sometimes even killing one, but running out of potions/TP/merc/javs. So finally I did get a good roll on them (two had teleportation, no cursed, no auras) that I managed to defeat in a long battle, about an hour from TP to TP. Gertude has made it to the WSK2 WP and hopefully I'll get a chance to carry on before the deadline.

Well, as a confirmed procrastinator, when someone says I can take my time, I do! Nevertheless, I am happy to say that GertrudeStein is now (finally) a Guardian.

GertrudeStein defeated Baal. It took several attempts to get through the WSK, probably about 25 attempts over five sessions or so. One of those attempts was heartbreaking, after a great deal of trouble to get to WSK3, there were unravellers and gloams which are one of my absolute least favorite combos. On the final successful trip through, there were witches on WSK3 which were very hard on the merc, and gloams and OKs in the throne. It was slow going and there were some merc deaths, but I have a deep reserve of gold and full rejuvs. Normally I am too miserly with the fat purples on the merc, but each time he died, it meant reviving him, going someplace for his aura to reactivate, and then changing armors and waiting until Fade activated, and that was so much trouble that I got a quicker trigger on feeding him the fat purples.

Gertrude has 13 hard points in Valk, so to get a level 17 one summoned I had to switch out helms to the Peasant Crown +1, use Lycanders for the +2, and Skin of the Vipermagi for +1.

Baal's minions went well, with great care and frequent trips to town. I had no replenishing javelins so Larzuk was getting sick of seeing my smiling face in his shop so often. If the Valk and the merc could tank things, I would stand back and LF away, but if not, I switched over to Lycander's Flank and CS'd alongside them. The Treachery armor (made in HD's personalized normal 3 OS breastplate) was a key ingredient but it complicated things as it was shared. For big battles, ideally Venom and Fade would be active on both the merc and Gertude. The duration is plenty long, but getting it to trigger could take some trouble sometimes. I used the "stand in fire" method (just outside the town gate) and once I nearly killed Gertude, which would have been totally humiliating. ("Mighty hero found dead after playing with matches!" the Harrogath Post would scream...)

Baal himself was not too bad- I switched back to Goblin Toe and was careful. Even with a quick finger on the fat purples for the merc, he died a few times, so the battle was somewhat long.

That rare circlet that she was wearing had some wasted aspects for her (+2 traps, FCR) but it was a godsend for Olga, a severely underlevelled trapsin I had to play in A2 Hell which is its own very long story, and for HD, who was a much better built trapsin I played in A4 Hell.

About a month ago I switched to using GoMule (on my Mac) instead of ATMA and I must say that it's great. It saved me the trouble of using a Windows machine just to run ATMA and it's nicer than ATMA in some respects, though weaker in some others. And it's been steadily improving!

I must thank Skunkbelly for another ingenious, engaging tournament that I enjoyed a great deal! I've enjoyed all of his tournaments so far (particularly those that I haven't died in normal in) and the follow-up tourney to this is even more challenging. And thanks to all the other participants, particularly those who played cooperatively and didn't attempt to sabotage characters deliberately!



 
Congratulations! I've been wondering what happened to everyone in this tourney. I don't even remember now when I played Gertrude, I think it was Act 1 Hell. Sounds like it took a lot of determination to make it through the Keep. How did the Ancients go?

@Brak: I think you had Gertude Hell Act 4, just before me.

Those circlets were both great and more than made up for crafting several junk rings and ammys this time. I also had bad luck rerolling charms and never got a skiller at all, let alone one that would have been useful for the characters I had. In the previous 99-items tourney, I spent a huge fortune in perfect gems rerolling to getting a life leech circlet for my merc so I was ecstatic when my NM imbue turned out so well. Every merc from NMA1 onwards wore that circlet.

The Ancients were a struggle, and there were many false starts which I bailed out of by TPing. Not having replenshing javs of any kind meant that I really had to plan on going toe-to-toe with them at least for a while, and that meant I had to reroll the mods a lot to get something I had a chance of managing. A description is in post #965 above.
 
I wrote this up a while ago, about what I thought was the hardest part of this tourney, getting an underlevelled poorly-planned assassin through Act 2 Hell. I wrote this expecting to either hear about Olga's death in a later act in Hell or that she made guardian, and post it then.

Olga is kind of in limbo, as she never died but she lost momentum with Skunkbelly when he crashed the game with Cloak of Shadows active against the Ancients. Here was my experience with her in Act 2 Hell, written a while ago:

Olga, dear Olga! When I got her she was seriously underlevelled and so was the merc, who was getting eaten alive in an instant. There were a lot of wasted skill points and it looked like someone had rehabilitated her from a Wake of Fire assassin to a Death Sentry one, but she was as much of a (recovering) bomb as Frost was when I got him (as a recovering bomb, in NM Act 3), and this was in Hell A2. I decided either I could Cloak of Shadows and Burst of Speed through the act, and hopefully not die (and hope that Hell Duriel died from fits of laughter at seeing a poorly built L66 assassin in his chamber), or invest some serious time and build her up to a safer level. I went the route of patience and levelled her excruciatingly tediously, mostly in the Rocky Waste, rerolling monsters at first when there were beetles there. At first she could barely kill anything there and every battle was a protracted ordeal. Even though I was aching for the Radement skill point, the tunnels were worse because of the unleechable skellies meant the merc needed even more of a supply of healing/rejuv potions.

Slowly but steadily she got sturdier and so did her merc, and eventually she got up to where she could proceed with some safety. Her Death Sentry was strong coming in, but she didn't really have decent lightning damage on that to get her own kills until I built up Lightning Sentry. And levelling was slow because attempting higher player settings was dangerous- DS wouldn't kill effectively except at players 1, where it was a good killer. So almost all of that leveling from L66 to L78 was done on players 1. There were a few near deaths, mostly spear throwers as Cloak of Shadows expired or beetles or bosses with nasty mods. One very surprising hit was when I was changing armor with my merc (so I had both my inventory and his open and couldn't see anything) that took me down to 10% of life. It would have been very embarrassing to leave a naked corpse out in the desert!

I had no MF gear at all but spent so much time combing the desert wastes that I actually found a fair number of decent items, including most appropriately, Sandstorm Trek. She did go through the Ancient Tunnels a few times, not for any great purpose since she wasn't high enough level to get decent experience there, but it was nice break from visiting the other areas I'd been to a million times and there was of course the (tiny tiny) chance of something dropping there. Nothing did, but while I was there I was wondering if Tyrael's dropped, if I would count it as this character and the items she's using are exposed to RRM/RWM taint. But that issue did not arise! She explored the entire map of A2, every nook and cranny including some I haven't been to in years, which is what happens when you have a long way to level and can only really play on players 1. Several good rune drops along the way, not great but filling in some gaps as my A1 Hell character was not really suitable for Tower runs I still was relying mostly on the huge stash I accumulated from A1 NM with GertrudeStein.

Questing went well but kept me on my toes. Two quests were accomplished off-screen; I never saw the Summoner or Radament as I kept my distance and let the traps do their work. The arcane sanctuary actually was kind of an ordeal. I did the safest three directions first and found no summoner at any of them. The fourth direction had lightning towers and the worst stairs for keeping the merc along, and I seriously considered rerolling the map for that, but I had explored the complete map up to that point and didn't want to lose that. I rerolled the monsters on that branch a few times until I got something reasonable, and then I braved those stupid towers (and the merc and SM focusing on them instead of things that die much more quickly) and found the summoner no problem once I got there.

The real problem was Duriel. Since Death Sentry was her main killing skill aside from her merc, and there are no corpses next to Duriel, that was a huge problem. I think I first tried Duriel when she was about level 74. She had no problems getting there but Duriel ate the Shadow Master almost instantly, and the merc lasted only a bit longer. The Lightning Sentries at that point weren't strong enough do register much damage on Duriel at all. And running around waiting for the traps to go off alone was not promising, so TP'd out and tried a few other strategies (Blade Fury with Goblin Toes and Coldsteel Eye for the slow and crushing blow, but I have no idea if even a single one of those blades hit, let alone triggered crushing blow, before I TP'd away.) So it was lots more levelling until the lightning damage on Lightning Sentry finally passed the lightning damage on Death Sentry. Lots and lots of preparation for Duriel! This act I was changing clothes with my merc ridiculously often- we had Treachery and Skins of the Vipermagi to share between us, and we were constantly changing body armor. He would wear it until Venom triggered, and possibly until Fade triggered, then we would switch. The Fade on the armor was much better than her native Fade, so it was good when that triggered. When the merc's venom wore off, time to change clothes again! I haven't done that much clothes-changing since playing dress-up a long time ago... So for what I hoped was the final Duriel battle, I wanted all of the following to be happening:

1) skill shrine active on Olga
2) Fade from Treachery active on both Olga and her merc
3) Venom active on the merc
4) both Olga and the merc stoked to the gills with thawing potions, stacked for six minutes or so
5) ridiculous number of full rejuvs ready to go

So that took a while to set up but I managed and the battle with Duriel was very long (15-30 minutes, at least. I had to go replenish thawing potions and get fade to retrigger at least twice) as even still the traps didn't do much damage to him. But finally Duriel was dead and it was goodbye to Olga!

I did have a fantastic circlet for her +2 traps, FCR, prismatic, FRW and Wizardspike. Without such good gear, I can only think of the even worse ordeal getting through the act would have been!

Would there be any interest in doing something like this again?

I know its a major time commitment for those involved since you can't just give up on the character when life get's in the way. So I wanted to gauge interest before I spend a lot of time figuring out logistics.

I'd imagine timing would run roughly 2-3 weeks per Act, shorter in Normal and longer as Hell comes along.
 
I would totally take part in this. Would you be following this ruleset, or one from the other SUTCs? OR a new one altogether, a BUTC?
 
I like the idea of the 99 item pass it on since it takes away the need to do full clears and area runs, which should make things a bit more leisurely. I would probably make some tweaks to do item rules, and we'd have a vote on whether people would be wanting to ban sabatoging characters.

The main problem I'm having now, is I wanted to inspect the original stash that Skunkbelly sent me to get an idea of what loot would be needed, but the file won't open for some reason.

I think we'd have to run it in SC, and we'd have to talk to Thyiad about the 1.13 and 1.14 issues.

We haven't hammered down exactly what we would want to get from donations, as we weren't even sure if there were going to be any. Here is skunk's list of what he asked for originally, and is definitely a good place to start. Obviously more items are welcome, but this gives a decent idea of the ratio of things, anyways. Thanks for the interest guys!

Once I’ve received your items, I will put them into a big pile, and divvy them out to make the character stashes (after supplementing them with items of my own). CAUTION: Resist the urge to send me your worst items… after all, you might just get them right back! :cool: If you’d like to send more than what is listed above, that’s fine, of course. But the items listed above are the minimum.
