Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge

Lowell received, and ready to start act 5 tonight (hopefully). I can't imagine a more solid character (nor can I imagine one that is more boring).

I started Updike, and I am really not sure why people complained about her. Yeah, I put some stat points in nrg, but not all, and her skills were all placed in useful killing skills, that could have made a great javazon. (granted someone else would have had to pump dex more to equip higher level javs.)

I think I'm responsible for making Updike "interesting". If I remember, my plan was to finish A5 normal and send her on at a fairly low level. I think I only put one level on her by the time I killed Baal (clvl 34 but very close to 35) Since Baal dropped a Vipermagi, I was done. At this point, she was very skilled in the poison javelins and I had increased lightning fury from 2 to 3 with my level gain. The Valk still needed 2 prereqs so I didn't go there.

Anyway, I think the next day I had a bad day at work or the kids were driving me crazy and I took it out on Updike. I took an hour and ran Pindle up to level 50. First of all Impale and Fend needed a point since you never know when you'll need one of those. Then I decided that she needed some Bow skills. (I wanted to try out one of the bows in my stash). So, every bow skill except Strafe got a point. Not sure if cold or fire was the way to go, Freezing Arrow & Immolation Arrow ended up with 2 or 3 points. Finally, Updike developed a fear of the dark so Inner Sight got a couple of points.

I did spend most attribute points on Dex (50 --> 119) and the rest on Energy (60 --> 76).

After that hour, I felt better but the damage had been done :embarassed:

Maybe secretly I was trying to get back at Brak for what he did to Frost and this was my only chance.
:undecided:

Regardless, I think she could have made it through NM with the right equipment, and careful playing but I realize I made a ticking bomb.

Karma will probably get me in the end...but it sure was and continues to be fun!

Eek! Between the two of you, Updike never stood a chance. Glad I got her early.

@Ohm....... L O L

@ SB-dunno what you mean, when she left me, she was a competent poison zon, with no wasted skill points, and the ability to make her hybrid lit-pois.

Tennyson has defeated NM Baal and become Conqueror Tennyson. He began Act 5 on Players 8. That didn't last long. When a couple foul crows almost did him in, he moved back to Players 5. That was fine until the Worldstone Keep level 2 after that, Players 1 all the way.

I will hold on to him until given the ok to pass him along.

Skunkbelly: I eagerly await my reward. The only elite set or unique that I have is the Ethereal Edge Silver Edged Axe. I have several nice exceptionals, but that is the only Elite.

Jarrell has survived act 4 and Diablo. Diablo dropped pretty much the typical, all rares. As if it mattered. Good to not care about it, for once:smiley:

En route to Freekje.

OK, compiled my stash of elite sets and uniques, class specific uniques, and a few useful exceptional uniques for the rewards for players reaching hell. I have enough, barely, to make sure everyone completing act 5 gets TWO new items, so there's an even better chance this will be helpful.

ALSO, there is one Skin of the Vipermagi floating around in the stash, so if you have that in your game stash, let me know (it may not be elite, but it's still one of the best armors in the game, and I'm sure someone will be pleased to receive it).

Perhaps, but almost all of her stat points had been placed into Energy

Final Edit to this poor message:

Once everyone has reached hell act 1, I will announce the rules for Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge II. That will give everyone something to look forward to, as they journey through hell.

Reward received! Now I've got to figure out the best use for the two new items.

Bishop has earned "Conqueror." I plan to send him onward shortly, though I still need to decide what to personalize or hunt some more, and figure out what would be the best thing to socket.

Here are my elite S/U items:

Elite set items:
Natalya's Shadow, loricated mail
Credendum, mitril coil
Immortal King's Stone Crusher, ogre maul

Elite unique item:
Wizardspike, bone knife

and I do have a Skins of the Vipermagi (31 resist all) which just about every character from A2 normal and after has worn.

One clarification question:

3. For act 5 players: the Cow Level is considered to be part of act 5. If you want to play it, go for it. If you want to skip it, that's up to you. You certainly may return to Tristram to retrieve a leg if need be.

4. Remember your act 5 personalization reward! Any item you find in act 5 may be personalized and kept in your stash forever.

So can I pick up something in the Cow Level to be the item that I choose to personailze? Back in normal, I thought that wasn't allowed, but if we consider cows as part of Act 5, it sounds like it would be OK after all.

Thanks for pointing that out. The Cow Level is NOT a place where you can pick up items for personalization. They must be found in act 5 itself.

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm quite happy to hear that since back in normal it took me forever to find what I wanted in A5, where it would have been much quicker in the Cow Level. And now I look back and see this came up in post #482 and #483.

Act 4 finished with Gertrude_Stein. Not the best skill build, she just have their skill points too spread for my taste.
Got a Sol from Hellforge  , I would find a use for an Amn or Shael.
On the other hand I found a Pul from a trapped skeleton in Outer Plains.

Edit: Gertrude was sent to Hoop

I think SB hasn't liked the chars I sent him, he sent me elites that are really unuseful :P

Ha. Not a real complaint, just wishing for armor, As most of my elites were already weapons.

And as far as your next tournament goes, I am positive I will want in, as this has been BAR NONE THE FUNNEST TOURNEY EVER.

Bishop has socketed, personalized and killed the Cow King and he's ready to be sent onwards. I got my bonus items which didn't fill in my weaknesses, but such is randomness...

Obligatory poetry quote:

From "Giant Toad", Elizabeth Bishop

Big wings of poison, folded on my back. Beware,
I am an angel in disguise; my wings are evil, but not deadly. If
I will it, the poison could break through, blue-black, and
dangerous to all. Blue-black fumes would rise upon the air.
Beware, you frivolous crab.

(Apparently, she liked running Baal with a poisonmancer...)

Pound finished with Act 4 and sent on. Hel from Hell Forge. That's the same drop I had in normal except with an H added. Nothing else notable except I figured out that Holy Shield expiration makes Peace triggered valks vanish.

Here's my summary of my experience with Frost, rest his tormented soul:

I had Frost for A2NM, which I played only on players 3 so he only levelled from 53 to 55. By the time I got him, he was tedious to play but not deadly. He was clearly in rehabilitation from a misspent youth. He had 17 points in Berserk which seemed to be his main attack at that point, though I used the one point Concentrate a fair amount for leeching and not being a sitting duck. I put a point into Battle Command, a point into War Cry, and an additional point into BO to take BO from 6 to 7. All the stat points went into Vitality, from 65 to 75.

I could dig up screenshots but all the info is here:

Frost upon arrival:
L53 S130 D 40 V65 E115
Combat: 4 leap, 17 berserk, 1 leap attack + prereqs
Masteries: 1 ax 1 mace 11 increased stamina 2 NR + prereqs
Warcries: 6 taunt 6 BO + prereqs

departure:
L55 S130 D40 V75 E115
Combat: 4 leap, 17 beserk, 1 leap attack (same)
Masteries: 1 ax, 1 mace, 11 IS 2 NR (same)
Warcries: 1 BC, 1 War cry, 7 BO. same 6 in taunt

Investing in Battle Command was a no-brainer as it boosts everything else, and I am happier using Berserk when things are stunned, so that was the idea behind a point in War Cry which was helpful with mobs and berserk.

Increased stamina was clearly a total waste, as was the energy investment. The points in taunt are actually slightly useful- it would have been far more interesting to have Taunt maxed instead of 6 in Taunt and 11 in Increased Stamina. I remember a Taunter guide (from SsoG, perhaps?) where the damage reduction of taunt is used effectively with straight PDR gear but I've never built one. In any case, Taunt was useful in Tal Rasha's Tomb to keep the Unravelers from raising dead. I had Unravellers + Apparations, my least favorite combo there, but with Taunt it was no problem with resurrections. Duriel went down no problem and I was happy to pass him on, where he became crazy_bear's problem in Act 3 where unfortunately he died.

Well, that was the ultimate tourney for me...

Unfortunately Jarrell has died. Needles to say, it was a Drood.

I completed act 5 already, which went pretty smoothly. Jarrell needed only about 15% exp to get to lvl 70, so I thought: "I can get him to lvl 70 and screw another skill point." Things did not go exactly as planned though. In the throne room I came upon some exploding undead dolls which were a bti too close. (Never saw them until it was already too late.)

Jarrell confirmed for me yet again that I don't like druids. When I got him there were already a bunch of skill points wasted, so I thought, let's continue on that course. Fissure was the main skill and turned out to be sufficient to get to Baal. Only baal was a bit of a problem and took a long time to kill. The merc died a few times and could not really help me, so I did it very slowly.

Only item that was lost and worth mentioning was a Dwarf Star

@Skunkbelly: Thanks for this great tourney, it was a really nice and alternative way of playing the game again. It's really sad that I cannot continue further in this tourney anymore.

Sorry to hear about the death, Freekje! I had Jarrell in A3 normal which was a breeze with him and quite enjoyable.

I found the table above hard to use to figure out who has what character at the moment, so I made this supplemental one, which indicates what character the survivors will have in A1 Hell assuming there are no further deaths between now and then:
