Skill-less tournament (3rd edition)

Hey guys, I need some help staying motivated! I'm in the ancient's way, and kill speed is decent, but it's so boring :D My goal going into this is not to guardian, but to just make it to hell. Anything else would just be gravy. But at this point, I could see it taking absolutely forever just to get there.

Halp!

Halp!

I have found my second Angelic ring in Ancient Way (that's where I am now also)! That means over 300 MF for merc kills. :)

I really think that this kind of challenge (a restricted tournament) is a good way to appreciate the enormous variety of this game. If you're in the mood to play something, this is a very nice way to do it: with people that share your passion. Other than this, this is a game, if you'd rather do something else, you probably should.

Edit: I would also tell you my biker motto: young bikers choose a destination and depart; old bikers choose a direction :).

Act V Normal is the most boring act ever, but it will be over soon :)

For some reason, I find myself playing my skill-less character again and again, instead of using my time to level a reasonable build. It might be the fact that it's a long time that I learnt something really new about this game: to heavily rely on skill charges from wands, for example (unholy Paladin FTW), or which skills spawn on Scepters at which ilvl, etc.

I'm very tired today (10pm here) so I won't play Incompetentus tonight, but I'm looking forward to defeating Fangskin using my kit of wands and a teleport staff, or die trying.

Maybe I'm just dreading the minions of destruction. Trying to decide what psetting I should take them on is stressing me out :D

Some tricky Dark One situations to be handled in the Catacombs, but we managed.
The Banished, with their high resists to both Meghan's major damage types, took a long time to kill. Especially the bosses and Champs. I had to plan for good fighting spots so that they would float into a corner when they entered 'flee mode'.

My duo is currently so weak that I took it down to /p3 for the last floor. I do not know exactly where the character is when Andariel spawns. The straight distance to her, as the crow flies (well, if the crow can pass through walls...) is quite close from where you emerge from the stairs, so I played it safe and changed players setting before entering Catacombs 4.

NM Andariel in melee has scared me several times in the past, with some wicked hits (probably criticals) so I wanted to shorten the fight. I pumped up poison resist with potions, took all my big potions and my Strength Blade Talons and whacked at her. And had to retreat very soon! That must have been a lucky streak for her, because it went more smoothly after that. I do have over 600 life and 50% blocking, after all. We were victorious, and the loot was decent:
HelenaNM05Andiloot_zps7b659506.jpg

That freezing axe is actually quite interesting, since I could use it to shatter skeletons in the next act. It has a good freeze bonus but it's unfortunately a two-handed weapon. The ring is a 20% Nagelring.

From NM and onwards, this game is quite generous with money. The Catacombs were good for almost half a million gold in total (not counting the 5 or so >30k gold items) so I will look out for some nice claws for sale soon. Then it's time to gamble a (hopefully high-end) Ferocious rare bow to upgrade. Gotta look up some bow qlvls again.
(OTOH, I may get lucky with drops. ANY exceptional unique bow would be an improvement.)

@jiansonz - Wow! Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed post. Deep down I knew that I couldn't find (or roll) such an orb but I certainly didn't know exactly why. I've been rerolling orbs as often as possible with all the chipped and normal gems that I come across but didn't realize the odds were quite so stacked against rolling static field . . . I guess I better stop being so picky :) .

@SunsetVista - Haha! I gave up on trying to catch you after the weekend before last :D . I've been throwing all my spare time at this tournament and am barely managing to stay in your wake!

Kneel before Zod! Er, um . . . Um.

The rest of NM Act IV is complete too.

I did a full clear at players 7 and then Diablo at players 3. Progress was generally super easy due to really lucky monster spawns in the Outer Steppes, Plains of Despair, and City of the Damned. The River of Flame was the only area that had monsters that spawn more monsters. I got Grotesques last night on the way to the waypoint and Blood Maggots tonight on the way to the Chaos Sanctuary. The Grotesques were by far the worst. Glacial Spike only 'froze' the Grotesques for a fraction of a second and left them enough time to spawn their young between blasts :( . The young then tended to be in the way of future Glacial Spike blasts . . . and then the screen would get full . . . and then the end result was pretty much needing to wait them out (thank goodness they don't keep spawning indefinitely). Beyond the River of Flame, the only problem in the Chaos Sanctuary was a group of champion Oblivion Knights that really liked to spam Decrepify (more or less completely stopping Hazade cold). Still, it really wasn't a big deal though . . . I simply broke them up and tele-stomped them. Players 3 Diablo also got tele-stomped (so Hazade was only threatened by Diablo's Firestorm) and that made confronting him safe and easy.

Diablo dropped a Rattlecage Gothic Plate, Angelic Sabre, and Cathan's Ring. Other set/uniques included: Ghoulhide Heavy Bracers (from the Plains of Despair), and Cleglaw's Gloves (from the Chaos Sanctuary). The Rattlecage might be useful in the battle against Baal (if I don't spend the Um Rune before then ;) ).

All of my previous tournament characters so far have died prior to personalizing anything, so this session started with personalizing one of the nicest pairs of boots I've ever found. The name is just gravy :)

Valdimir and Jemali have achieved Destroyer status! The entirety of act 5 except the ancients was done on P8; a fact I'm quite proud of. Most of the act was cleared using Riphook, which was unwillingly donated by Diablo himself. The open wounds and slows enemies mods were particularly helpful. Once Shael dropped, however, we swapped to a one hander/Rhyme setup. Unfortunately, the best one hander available was Bloodrise, which has rather...lackluster damage.

Back in act 3 we used the cube recipe to make a beautiful savage partizan of the locust, which made Jemali quite the tank indeed.

After the ancients, life was almost completely uneventful. We crafted an okay blood belt (1% LL :() with +44 life. All that changed when we got to the minions. We decided to try the first wave on P8 to see how things might go. Vladimir beat Calenzo down ever so slowly with his Bloodrise of DOOM, but we made it. The undead wave was an exercise in patience for sure, but we were successful by baiting decrepify from Baal and letting Jemali make quick work of the skeletons. The council were pulled away from baal and taken out with no problems thanks to maximum fire resistance for both Jemali and Vladimir.

That leaves the venom lords and the Minions of Destruction. Terror charges split up the venom lords, making them fairly straightforward. the minions, though, required some strategy. Vladimir pulled one away while Jemali distracted the others. We returned to town, then back through the portal and took out the outlier with no problems. Slowly pulling the minions of destruction one or two at a time made the fight less intimidating.

Baal himself doesn't hit very hard, but is extremely frustrating for two melee characters. After the long battle with the minions, we decided to take on Baal on P8 as well, if only for the pride of doing so. 30 minutes later, and Tyrael was destroying the Worldstone while Vladimir and Jemali were escaping to Sanctuary. Not before Baal gave us a nice little present though:

Moonfall hits about 6x harder than Bloodrise, plus has ctc Meteor! Nightmare should be tons of fun with this new hurty mace of doom :)

@HanShotFirst: Nice find with the Um. Some interesting options open up with that one.

Grotesques do spawn countless young (if you keep killing them), but they practice some sort of birth control: whenever it can see 6 or more young, it won't breed.

@Dazliare: nice going there as well. Moonfall sounds nice. I've only seen it a few times, and never with a character that wanted to use it.

The Impaler can't compete with a Savage Partizan of the Locust, right?

The PMH and OW on the Impaler are nice, but otherwise you're right - the partizan is better.

For future, is it possible to use the chipped gems recipe to roll some elite polearm with the cruel affix?

For future, is it possible to use the chipped gems recipe to roll some elite polearm with the cruel affix?

The affix level of Cruel is 51. The affix level depends on the qlvl of the item, and the ilvl, which is always 25 for the chippie recipe.

You can use the affix calculator to find out:

http://diablo2.ingame.de/spiel/expansion/itemdb/affix_index.php?lang=en

The qlvls are listed here:

http://classic.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/elite/polearms.shtml

The formula for alvl is here:

http://diablo2.diablowiki.net/Item_Generation_Tutorial#Affix_selection

Here is a table (qlvl, ilvl, alvl) for ilvl = 25 and qlvl from 60 to 85 (the range relevant for elite polearms):

Code:
qlvl    ilvl    alvl
60      25      30
61      25      31
62      25      31
63      25      32
64      25      32
65      25      33
66      25      33
67      25      35
68      25      37
69      25      39
70      25      41
71      25      43
72      25      45
73      25      47
74      25      49
75      25      51
76      25      53
77      25      55
78      25      57
79      25      59
80      25      61
81      25      63
82      25      65
83      25      67
84      25      69
85      25      71

I just wrote a perl script to generate this table, hope it is correct:

Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl

@qlvl_range = (60 .. 85);
@ilvl_range = (25);
for $qlvl (@qlvl_range) {
  for $ilvl (@ilvl_range) {
    $ilvl_tmp = $ilvl;
    if ($qlvl > $ilvl) { $ilvl_tmp = $qlvl; }
    if ($ilvl_tmp < 99 - int($qlvl / 2)) { $alvl = $ilvl_tmp - int($qlvl / 2); }
    else { $alvl = 2 * $ilvl_tmp - 99; }
    if ($alvl > 99) { $alvl = 99; }
    print join("\t", $qlvl, $ilvl, $alvl), "\n";
  }
}

So, for example, you can roll a Cruel Giant Thresher (qlvl 85) using that recipe but not a Cruel Ogre Axe (qlvl 60) or Cruel Thresher (qlvl 71).

Thank you Felix, that was super helpful! Looks like it's just possible on CA, GPA, and GT - or essentially not possible for this tournament. A cryptic sword isn't outside the realm of possibility, but they can't drop for a good while :(

Adriana and merc also reached destroyerhood.

From the last update things have gone smoothly, but, increasingly, Adriana takes active part in battles. Frozen Tundra provided merc with a rare pike which also has a significant boost to Attack Rating. Having slightly larger average dmg per frame, it has been kept (the previous weapon had been a high savage halberd; go ahead, laugh at merc :) ). The Ancient Way hid another Angelic Ring, as I was saying before, and that meant a huge deal to our MF. It subsequently reached jiansonz's grade values: 317% for merc kills, 251% for chests.

At Frozen Tundra WP, I broke the play session to mule in the fighting gear (for ancients and Baal), but when equipping for ancients I realized I forgot the Cleglaw gloves! Darn! Again Save&Exit, but the Ancient Way WP was way off the exit to the Summit. Adriana put on running boots and managed to lose all monsters on way, but in doing so she also lost merc. That is when the merc bug hit. I think it hits when merc wants to follow but can't because of monsters blocking its way. At a certain range monsters lose interest in fighting so, with merc present, they go to a "ignore merc" state.

Anyway, I was ready to S&E again, but then I realized I could use that very much in our advantage. It' much more easy to wake up one monster at a time when only the character you directly control has effect on it. As Adriana still needed a tank for dangerous lord packs, she kept confusion/attract wands on switch and that worked out perfectly including for Baal's minions. That got her into a urban guerilla warfare tactic impression, moving close to walls and using terrain for cover. The most obvious advantage to this choice was when confronting the Hollow One pack. The resurectors kept raising the one skeleton they had in range (which Adriana promptly killed) while merc was hacking at them. Very easy fight.

Lister and pals were approached one at a time (ok, I got bored and extracted two of them once as merc was quite fast in dropping them). The Jade Tan Do saw ample use to stop the regeneration.

Baal himself was only a matter of time and not a very much time, really. As merc was ignored, Adriana only kept an eye on her own life bulb. Some healings were used and 2 Full Rejuvs when consecutive hits connected. The drop was unimpressive. Large shield (already found), some rares, and two blues.

Nightmare will be an entirely different story. Attempts to cube a partizan have failed and Adriana has not found any of the high runes she needed for the merc weapon. If she really tried, she could cube a Thul, but no more. I hope cows will be generous or else Adriana will have to give up MF and equip fighting gear from Act I Nightmare onwards.

Everything up until now has been on /P8 so Adriana now stands just a hair shy of level 49 (the previous update mistakenly presented her as 44, but she was really 45 then).

We seem to have a lot of skill-less destroyers :). Here's hoping skill-less Guardians are not impossible.

Act I ended with a nice surprise in the Cathedral. I think that's the first of my characters that can make Smoke before Rhyme. The Catacombs had some pretty nasty rooms with Champion Shamen, whose AI seems to have an infinite radius of awareness (for reviving) once you start moving towards them.

Andariel seems to have developed a habit of dropping Bloodletters, hopefully she will drop one for Daz' Barbarian too.

In Act II, I got a map with Lut Gholein's town gate next to Drognan, so I power-shopped him for a Wand with Terror charges. That was a wise decision, it came in very handy throughout the Act.

In the Sewers, finally a Shael rune dropped. Now I just need a good 2os Paladin Shield ...

Crafted a Blood Belt, the result was rather meh, but at least it has a perfect (10%) OW mod and 24% FHR, so I kept it.

A nice present from the Rocky Waste was a Ring with DV charges. Now I have two curses available without having to switch equipment.

The Halls were taken at /p5 due to the Revivers. It wasn't that bad, only one room with 7 revivers in and next to it required a bit of tactics. I was rewarded with a green basinet from Bloodwitch (gold would have been awesome, but still an item worth keeping).

The maggot lair was OK despite a double bosspack. To kill the Queen, whose offspring had deeded my S/U druid, we just stood in the hallway and kept remembering that there is only a finite number of maggots. Eventually Razan fought his way through 10 inches of maggot crap and killed the Queen, who had a dangerous side mod, too.

Off to the dreaded Claw Viper Temple. Entering at /p3. Immediate stairtrap, but Terror helped. No revivers in the first room, otherwise it would have been nasty. The story repeated itself for Fangskin, who charged right away and was FE, but was dispatched using lots of Terror charges and a couple of healing potions.

Yes, qlvl 75 is the magic number to reroll Cruel on weapons. If one makes it to Act II Hell, it's possible to buy War Pikes, Ghost Spears and Ghost Glaives from Fara. War Pikes are best, because javelins do little damage and Ghost Spears have higher DEX requirement than mercs can handle without extra +DEX gear. (Note that these spears can be crafted (Safety Weapon recipe) as well as rerolled.).
As for the polearms, Dazliare is correct that the three highest types can be rerolled into a Cruel. Why would that be out of reach in this tourney? It's only the Giant Thresher that is super rare due to being TC87 (although even those can be shopped in late Hell...), the other two have at least a reasonable chance to drop in high-level areas. I got a blue GPA from a boss in Mausoleum for a Pally in a tourney a while back. It was crucial for his success later.
If I make it to Hell, I plan to reroll a bow of any of the three highest types for my merc. If I don't find one in early Hell, I will try to gamble a Crusader Bow (qlvl 77).

Sewers was a real drag today. Every random monster type was melee. Ugh. Good thing there are those narrow passages in the sewers that makes it possible for even Helena to tank them, one at a time. Well, not the FELE skeleton boss in early level 2, but most others. As usual, I drew away everything from Radament. Then I put my Strength claw to use again. Claws have range 2, which meant I could make Raddy pretty useless:
HelenaNM06Raddy_zpsfa417cf6.jpg

It was a quicker battle than I had expected.

Early desert can be a chellenge, as can certainly Stony Tomb. I bought a cheap (4k gold) Hand Scythe that I have rerolled so it now has +1 Cloak of Shadows. I also gambled bows (Composite, Short Battle, Long Battle) for 800k gold but scored nothing that beat my upgraded Stormstrike. I found a 3s Cedar Bow. I made an Edge in that too, and will have Meghan try it out next session. It has huge off-weapon ED vs demons and undead (which doesn't help all that much if weapon damage is low) but several of the more annoying desert creatures are animals... One good thing about this bow is that it has 5 seconds poison on it, which means I will not need to tag every high-life monster with PMH anymore. Hopefully, I can focus on heavy CoS usage. And if I need to tank in an early part of an area, meleers will at least hurt themselves when they hurt Helena (due to Thorns). (I have Stormstrike in the stash as backup if my new setup turns out to be a fail.)

I have also brought in my Static Circlet, so I can make use of the fast attack speed Meghan gets with Edge. Should help against swarms and ghosts in particular. Larzuk failed me and put only one socket in it. He ALWAYS does that for my weaker characters! Damn him.

Hi all. It appears that lots has happened since I last posted in this space. Skilllass has just completed her p8 full clear of normal and sits in the Rogue Encampment ready to begin nightmare at level 48.

Up to this point the merc's Savage Partizan of Carnage and Skilllass' Static Field and Glacial Spike on main with Teleport and Telekinesis on switch, have proved more than enough to provide a smooth ride. Currently rocking 285 MF for merc kills, which will go to 310 as soon as I find a 2os Tower Shield; have found a couple of 3os and a couple of 1os.

Unfortunately I don't have time at the moment for a detailed post with screenshots and such, but maybe I can cobble something together over the weekend.

P.S. found two Cow King's Hide in the cow level!
