Skill-less tournament (3rd edition)

@SunsetVista: Nice going!
Although, IIRC, no act boss regenerates any life at all.

Not in Normal, certainly. But I thought in higher difficulties they did? I suppose I will check again.
I know the Ancients never do unless their weapons have leech... hmm...

Edit: It appears that Act bosses do not regenerate (at least since 1.09?). So it must have been the Thorns aura on the merc that helped with Andariel. Thanks jiansonz!

No unique or set drops since the Felloak... no charms either... Hrmm

Tons of gems though!

Next post will be Andy's demise, or my own!

@Dazliare : Nice ammy!

@xXxGrimmxXx: Aaaaah, sorry about that. You know what they say: third time's a charm :).

Adriana and merc re-entered the fray after a much deserved time of rest. Restarting from Great Marsh WP, the group needed to re-clear a path to the area where they last were the previous session. It was a short go but INSIDE it lived a gang of champion carcases. Adriana couldn't afford to run past as there were also a group of flayers around so she let merc kill them. Of course, one of them dropped the sabre. Aaargh! As the drop wasn't really there, sighing heavily, Adriana left it on the ground, but this character seems destined for green. You'll see shortly more.

Great Marsh did not hold the same cheesy monsters as before (gloams + carcases) but hulks and bogs which were not so generous with Adriana, although they were easy prey for merc.

Flayer Jungle came next and a brain was found at a bottom of a Dungeon. Adriana did not want anything to do with yucky body parts. Besides, she already had an eye from spiders, and enough brains to spread around, thank you very much. What would she do with it? A quick glance to merc and she quietly stashed it. The reward ring from Ormus did her no good, but it did fetch a nice sum when it was sold back to him.

Close to the Flayer Jungle waypoint there was an Experience Shrine, but there were no interesting monsters around so Adriana kept it untouched for until boss packs appear. At the very least, the hulks at the entry of Lower Kurast would provide a target for that shrine bonus. Also next to the WP was the entrance to the Swampy Pit so Adriana eagerly rushed inside to check the sparkly chest she knew was at the bottom.

The Pit was quite interesting. Monsters were easy and not far inside a barb helm dropped that any barb (especially in this tournament) would kill for: +1 Battle Orders, +3 Find Item. Adriana could have contemplated a carrier change, not having much in common with assassins anyway. The helm was worth more than 15k so it was stashed. The pit was also hiding another set belt which got sold, and the set war staff.

The Pit contained only one boss pack (dolls), and before Adriana realized it was there, the boss was dead so the exp shrine remained unused. But at the entrance of LK it was put on, and Adriana managed to kill, besides the hulk pack, also a stone skin leaper pack while wearing it, which was quite nice, xp-wise.

LK holds promise for runes, so Adriana was happy to enter that fabled land. Inside, more sets (another angelic ammulet and 2x large shields!) and just one rune (eth), from a bird. Not much else, except for other high-durability class-specifics.

Gambles continued and finally a luck boot was landed and what a nice shoe that was (perfect 35 MF, nothing else though). At Ormus, Adriana also found some life tap wands which she bought (more, as one of them had also huge cold resist (38%) and one was already in stash). So now, Ormus has nothing more to tempt her to scan his wares, as that elusive Mechanic Bone Shield of Deflecting was also bought from him (not sure what to do with it now, though). Adriana also stocked some 2-sockets simple headgear for future Nadirs, should the Chaos Sanctuary prove to be difficult.

Adriana is very close to level 31 (probably the next monster will clinch it for her) and sits on the LK WP.

As people begin to wonder about the whereabouts of the table, here it is. :)

NM Act 2 is going smoothly with Waheed's Might aura and 2 items that dropped in the Sewers on the way to kill Radament:
a 4 socket gothic plate (now full of pTopazes)
and
an ilvl 44 white partizan

After Radament was dead I went back to Normal to get Larzuk to punch holes in the partizan.
I've never made this runeword before, since usually Insight beats it by a wide margin, but the merc needed the leech (and no suitable 4 socket base had dropped):

Still killing on /p5 for sanity and safety. I keep thinking I might raise it higher, but I really don't want to die and I like not having to res the merc.

Again, Dim Vision is the best curse. Cats don't sling/poison/firebomb, leapers don't leap, claw vipers don't charge. Mages and archers don't shoot, maggots don't lay eggs, mummies don't revive. Well, mostly I CE'd everything near them because the duration on Dim Vision is a bit short for that.

Killed an unbreakable physical immune swarm with CE and the poison damage on Edge and whatever extra charm damage I still have on:

@xXxGrimmxXx - ack, sorry about the deeds! I saw the zero fire and lightning res on your LCS and I was hoping you'd make it thru anyway...

@epaminondas - thanks for keeping the table up to date for everyone! CoS doesn't work on oblivion knights, so watch out for iron maiden in Chaos Sanctuary!

Uh, oh! I didn't know that, although I suspected as much. I guess Adriana will implement the highly valued "run like hell" tactic then. Must make a note to save some cash for merc resurrections. Thanks for the heads up :).

Hi all. It seems this tourney is getting a lot of attention, so I decided to park my smite paladin in the "impossible" tournament (yes he's still going, but at a snail's pace) and join in the fun.

I decided to enter with a Sorc named Skilllass and things have been going well so far. She now stands at level 30 at the beginning of LK. She has relied for a while on an orb with Frost Nova and Static Field with a switch for Teleport and is going with 50 block with BSOD. The combat merc Azrael currently wields a Savage Partizan of Ease and is very strong for now.

On Merc kills (all kills) I am currently running at 207 MF, but have only found three uniques so far: Hawkmail, The Manald Heal, and Crushflange. Fortunately, all of those have potential use later on.

Good luck to everyone!

Another act completed. Two first areas were tough, with spawners (ugh!) and Venom Lords (who are pretty dangerous when you have 17% fire resist...) but the City was a breeze. Wimpy bats were the main critters, along with Abyss Knights and Corpse Spitters. Only the spitters required any tanking from Helena.

Got an Amn from Hellforge, pretty cool. Since I gamble so much, maybe time to make an Edge bow now. Speaking of socketed bows, I plan to make a Zephyr in the first exceptional 2s Razor/Cedar/Double Bow that drops. I've also kept an 1-76 Static Circlet that I may put socket(s) in.

Diablo was taken down with Fiery Pilums. Lots and lots of Fiery Pilums. Repaired the stack over 30 times...
In addition to Hsaru's boots, I used some temporary jewelry to make fire/lightning resists at least decent. I had a teleporting staff ready on my switch but I never needed it (no bone prison was cast).

Looking forward to the next act. 13-14 level-ups, plus I can finally get hold of some staffmodded claws. :)

Incompetentus has reached Act V.

Act III temples dropped a nice 11@ / 23 MF amulet. Hard to beat for untwinked.

Mephisto was easy to defeat but Bremm Sparkfist had conviction, which is quite deadly even in Normal. Managed to kill Hazade for the first time.

The first three areas in Act IV had spawner demons, which was rather ugly. The River of Flame had an ugly combination, too: Urdars and Blood Maggots, the former hitting hard and the latter keeping Hazade occupied with their offspring. Almost got swarmed there.

Diablo was acupunctured to death using LOTS of throwing spears and a Fiery Circlet (16-39 fire dmg). With nearly maxed fire and lightning resistance, killing him was only a matter of patience. He dropped two rare merc weapons with high %ED (ferocious brandistock, merciless halberd) which could be upgraded later.

Incompetentus, level 34, Harrogath

@Sput - welcome and good luck! In this tourney you can go to town and talk to people and have a merc and an extended stash.... It's fun!

/p5 Arcane Sanctuary was good experience. Terror was useful to scare goatmen away from teleporters so I could take them safely. Decrepify was nice on specter and goatman packs, and Dim Vision kept the firewalls to a minimum. Waheed was way smarter about stairs than Zanarhi had been.

I really like my questing setup:

I found 2 El runes in the Canyon of the Magi. Actually happy with that for once because they represent extra chances of upgrading a low quality head to have CE on it.

Most of the false tombs were more relaxing than their Normal counterparts because there were fewer Unravelers. When there were Unravelers, I blew everything up and drank mana pots. I stayed very far away from cold enchanted beetles.

I spent the whole Act agonizing over what to do about Duriel. I decided on melee crushing blow delivered with a fast weapon, either 'Strength' or 'Black'. The fastest base I found was a 2 socket Kris, so 'Strength' it was. I scoured my stash for anything with AR, and assembled quite ye olde Duriel killing kit:

With some thawing potions, I had 85 cold res, ~48% block, and ~1300 AR. Duriel alternated between attacking me and Waheed, but he was unable to take us down. I kept Decrepify up and Crushing Blow did its thing. The fight was moderately slow but better than I expected. I only had to go to town once to refill pots. Duriel dropped Death's sword, a tp scroll, and some junk.

@epaminondas Yes, third and final time is a charm.

I've been looking at the table to see who is playing what class... I see no Amazons!

For my last attempt I will be playing WaffleStrike, the Amazon!

@xXxGrimmxXx: Good luck!

Adriana and merc continued on their quest. I put the previous session on hibernate so I could restart from where it was left. The plan was, though, to break the play at Kurast Bazar WP to get the Mephisto equipment from extended stash. I was afraid of Meph because I remember losing chars to his iceball so I got *everything* out. On the road to his lair, Adriana found no hardships, except for lords who must keep merc's attention for sufficient time or else Adriana had to interfere. The temples went smoothly with some where various monsters tried to set up laughable stair traps. Adriana had good luck with charms as many small life/resists were found, plus the jewel of the crown : a grand charm with 12 FHR and 22 Lightning Resist. That GC dropped in the Sewers Lvl 1, an area that I feel very uncomfortable with. I always have the feeling that I missed something there. Nevertheless, it also provided Adriana with a failed Hellplague (among other failures) and a chain mail. Adriana also found a failed breast plate, and she wondered why hasn't she found yet an Isenhart's. These must have been all found then :).

The Sewers lvl 2 was the most crowded I've seen in recorded history. A boss horadric ancient and a simple one were making quite some noise there. Adriana had to kill the simpleton herself as merc was overwhelmed. Had I suspected the commotion there, I would have carried an Experience Shrine inside (which was used to kill the bat pack upstairs, and what an adventure that was, as the shrine was on the opposite side of the map).

Travincal's council-men weared magic demonhide gloves (which might be a candidate for crafting some day), a quhab (the first exceptional assassin weapon found) and a large battle bow. Durance lvl 1 brought an annoying encounter with an extra-fast lord boss pack. Merc helped beat the boss only to run away when it was slivered. The boss also run away and by the time we got hold of it again, it was half healed. Some foul curses were uttered in merc's general direction.

Durance lvl 3 was populated with a fanatic counselor tightly coupled with a doll boss pack. I forgot to check the boss doll (later, that will be a fatal mistake), but Adriana didn't suffer that much from hits. She had close to 500 life tough. Ample use of terror charges brought the fight at more even grounds, but some scary moments still happened and sent Adriana scrambling away in fear at the upper level (where a health shrine was situated close by). Mephisto was approached with more than 500 life, almost maxed resists (thanks also to potions), huge AR, Crushing Blow and 20 unspent stat points. Little blocking, though. On switch, life taps were preferred to weaken charges. I had also hoped to remember that Adriana had a Poison Resist shrine close to some WP and it could have been used, but I forgot it. You know what they say: hope dies last and, usually, of laughter. Only one trip to town was required and only to switch to more MF. The drops were impressive: the much searched for sabre and a tower shield. Also some failures were reported.

Adriana (32) looks forward to Hellforge, hoping for an Amn. Even a Thul would not be bad (a safety amulet would have been nice (+blocking) if angelic's hadn't dropped).

The Swampy Pit is extremely terrifying. I am not going there on Hell difficulty, if I live that long. Really. I will NOT go in there.

The jungle has been alright so far on /p5. Dim Vision silenced flayers, slowed frenzy trees, and prevented jungle hunters from running.

The spider cave was full of maggots. Dim Vision again, and CE to clear up the young ones. With decrep on Szark the Burning, Waheed squashed him and we had no trouble collecting the eye.

There were no wisps in the Great Marsh, and that is ok. Lots of fireball frogs (dim vision) and drowned carcasses (amp), though.

Just cleared Arachnid Lair and Swampy Pit (aaaaah!).
Gloam bosspacks put me in hit recovery, and those long, narrow passages are a horrible place to fight them. Aaaaah!

NM Andariel is dead. Hazade killed her. Her, and every other monster in Act I (all at players 7).

NM Act I started with Hazade needing to upgrade from his Savage Partizan. NM Act I ended with Hazade needing to upgrade from his Savage Partizan  . I had one chance for a serious upgrade (and to make my life easy) but I blew it. I came across but one white partizan in the whole of Act I. It came late in the Barracks and was an ilvl 40. I opted to use my only perfect amethyst (and one of my two Amn Runes) to take the 50% chance for four sockets. I got three  . %$#@ $!#@ &%$# #$%&. So, darn. But other than that, things went okay . . .

The plan continued to be teleport for positioning, freeze stuff with Glacial Spike, and let Hazade shatter it. Due to Hazade's poor weapon damage I ended up using Static Field more often which was a bit of problem. Static Field is on my switch staff which meant using it caused me to lose life and mana, (from my orb) and most of my resistances (from my shield). Combine those losses with needing to be right next monsters (Level 3 Static Field doesn't have much of a radius) and I had some seriously dangerous encounters. Sadly nothing got me though . . . and so I must go on . . .

Set/unique drops were numerous and pretty good including: Boneflesh Plate Mail (from the Blood Moor), Arctic Bow (from the Cavel Level 1), Hsarus' Boots (from the Burial Grounds), Brainhew Great Axe (from the Mausoleum), Cathan's Ring (from the Stony Field), Bladebone Double Axe (from the Underground Passage Level 1), Sigon's Armor (from the Underground Passage Level 2), Sigon's Belt (gambled  ), Sigon's Shield (from the Hole Level 1), Cathan's Helm (from the Tamoe Highland), Isenhart's Helm (from the Tamoe Highland), Hwanin's Belt (from the Tamoe Highland), Ichorstring Crossbow (from the Tamoe Highland), Griswold's Edge Broad Sword (from the Jail Level 2), Chance Gaurds Chain Gloves (from the Catacombs Level 3), Stoutnail Spiked Club (from Andariel), Spectral Shard Blade (from Andariel), and Frostburn Gauntlets (from Andariel). Hazade dropped his MF armor for the Boneflesh (and it really helped), and the Frostburn's might end up getting used later.

But first things first. Upon returning to Lut Gholein Hazade has spent some time studying in the libraries and temples of his fathers and has mastered the secrets of Might. Now if we can only find him a mighty weapon . . .

Hanshotfirst, Sorceress, Two, Level 52, Act II NM, Lut Gholein

@SunsetVista - Wow! Crazy good progress! Congrats on Duriel :) .
