Skill-less tournament (3rd edition)

Guardian Helena the Assassin and Meghan the Cold sister, level 86, Complete Game Clear

That is another medal on jiansonz's chest :). I wonder which of those characters you guardianed you think was the hardest, if you even remember them all?

In this tournament, a Guardian requires an immediate table update.

Inspired by jiansonz's skillless Guardian and a little bored with the easy progress in the Committed tourney, I thought I'd pick up Unlikely again and see how things went.

Back onto the laptop for Unlikely, so back peering at the tiny screen again! Okay, what is this character again? Hmmm, a Necromancer and Emilio an Act 2 merc, right, probably Holy Freeze … nope … oh Prayer, right, with Insight. Interesting. And no leech on the merc, hmmm. So, it has been about 3 months since I last played Unlikely (maybe 2.5?) and I had no idea what I was doing (I probably should have re-read my previous tourney entries). It appears we are level 72 and have just defeated Nihilithak and cleared the Frozen Tundra, NM Act 5. Not the best place to be coming back into things.

Anyway, first up was the Ancient's Way with Afflicted, Bone Mages and Reanimated Horde. Emilio died a few times before I worked out that all I needed to do was cast DV on them and they were fodder for Emilio's eth Partizan Insight. Easy after that.

Hmm, what other skills do I have … along with DV there is Decrep and CE on main weapon. Okay, CE does very little on p8 but Decrep should be handy. Then on switch we have … Clay Golem from a Head and Tancred's Crowbill as our weapon … please explain??? Oh, it goes with the Tancred Amulet to give us 78 MF, nice. Total MF is 364 with Tancred's, 286 without. Emilio adds an extra 167 on his kills. All kills are his kills. We should be getting loads of S/U's!! Excellent!

Down into the Icy Cellar with Hell Lords, Undead Stygian Dolls and Sirens. No stair trap, but across the moat is a champion pack of Hell Lords and a regular pack of Hell Lords. We managed to drag them over the bridge one at a time and kill them. Emilio died a few more times while I was working things out. Weapon switching wasn't really happening. Decrep got a good work-out.

Ancients up next … might as well give it a go on p8. First roll was easy enough and it was just a matter of dividing and conquering. WSK1 had Vile Witch, Death Lords and Soul Killers. Plenty of use for DV and scouting with the CG. WSK2 had Steel Scarab, Serpent Magus and Cadaver. This Cadaver hit hard and their poison hits even harder. Emilio had a few more deaths, mostly cause I'd decided to go through to Baal and wasn't willing to use my small supply of purple's on him. WSK3 was a breeze with Horror Mage, Demon Sprite and Blood Boss/Fire Boar. DV took care of them no problem.

ToD had a stair trap which could have been nasty: Undead Soul Killers and Serpent Mages. DV and a quick sprint got us out of trouble. There were also Dark Lords down there, who must have decent phys resist as Emilio took a while to kill them if I didn't help him out with Decrep. Minions were slow but steady. CE got some use blowing up corpses in the first two waves. Ventar and his pals were super, super tough (Extra Fast/Extra Strong). After Emilio got swarmed and died a few times we separated them and took them out one at a time. Even two of them was too much for Emilio to tank. Lister's gang by comparison could be taken two at a time (Spectral Hit/Stoneskin).

Not even thinking about it we entered the the portal to fight Baal on p8 … oops. No CB either, meant it was a long, long fight. However, Decrep and a bit of Clay Golem kept Baal quiet and we didn't end up using a single potion.

Drops: Right, all that MF the list should be mighty and it is .. well, Baal dropped Cathan's Rule and Gleamscythe. That's it. There was a Fal rune in the WSK as well.

Cows up next. Not sure I'm up for Cows right now and not sure that I'll be doing them at p8 either. That will be one mighty long grind! I now realise why the Committed tourney feels such a breeze. Having Skills makes a HUGE difference and compared to this most things are going to feel easy … still, nice to have the challenge!

Unlikely the Necro and Emilio the big stick wielder, Lvl 75, NM Cows next

PS: I seem to have lost my notes from the first part of Act 5 so there is a section from the Glacial Trail through to Nihilthak that I'm not too sure what happened. If they turn up I'll post anything important.

Before tackling Cows I thought I'd do some gear changes. So Emilio lost his MF gear and got Stealskull and Hwanin's Refuge (I thought the Static Field might be nice). Unlikely ditched the Tancred's set-up in favour of a +3 Attract/+3 Summoning skills wand; a rare +1 Necro skills ammy; and a pair of rare greaves with 30 FRW and 25% MF.

Despite my gut feeling that p8 Cows was going to be too tough and too risky, at the final moment I decided that we were up for the challenge. I should have stuck with my instincts.

Things started badly with us getting pinned down near the entry portal. Then they got worse when a Conviction aura boss and a LE boss joined the party. Emilio had no chance and died 5 times without really making an impact. Figuring that Attract would have drawn the nearby cows in and so there should be some space nearby we set off for a sprint to find somewhere to try and get established … and we found cows, cows and more cows everywhere we went. We ducked and dodged and weaved our way through them and Emilio died some more. We had just gambled 2.5 mil gold before starting cows and had around 500k left when we started. It was now below 200k and another few merc deaths and we wouldn't be able to afford a rezz. More running and still no space so we headed back towards the portal. Maybe there was space there now? On the way we ran into the pack with the 2 bosses, except now there was a Cursed boss in there with them, and another boss as well. Four bosses, Emilio dies again. We did manage to draw this mass of cows and bosses away from the red portal however, so next tp out we came back through the red portal and found only a few cows (10 or so) around with no bosses. Without using Attract, Emilio was able to kill a few of them and his Static Field triggered a couple of times. We then spammed CE and finally we had some space to work with. Just as importantly we were able to collect some loot to sell and net about 150k gold.

After that it was slow and tedious but relatively safe to expand our cleared area. Being careful we were able to keep away from both the Cow King and that big multi boss maul that was still waiting to be dealt with. Once we had cleared most of the level we went looking for those bosses. Isolating the 3rd (Magic Res/FE) and 4th (Cursed/LE) bosses was relatively easy and they were then simple to deal with. However the first two (Conviction/FE and LE/Stoneskin) insisted on sticking together and that was a deadly combo even with no minions around (DV allowed us to separate them from their minions). Eventually, after dragging the pair halfway across the field we got them far enough from each other to take out the Conviction boss and then the LE boss after.

Cow King was LE/Teleport which was nice and simple and then it was just a final bit of mopping up and gathering of loot. Best find was an Amber (11%) SC of Balance .. in fact only decent drop for the area.

And in pictures it goes like this:

Now Unlikely moves on to Hell and is feeling pretty good really. Emilio has his eth Insight Partizan, Duriel's Shell and Stealskull. Unlikely ditches the PTopaz gear for Tarnhelm and Smoke, while Trang's Claws come in for Chancies. Life is over 900, resists are max for cold, fire and lightning. Poison is 55%. We hit the 56 FHR breakpoint. Skills are looking alright with: Dim Vision lvl 9; Clay Golem, Decrepify, Life Tap and Attract at lvl 7; Corpse Explosion lvl 5. And we still manage 125 MF. A staff of Teleport and a wand with +3 Amp Dam/+2 Terror are in the stash for emergencies.

We have a good supply of gems for crafting and re-rolling charms and have the runes to make Treachery and Obedience once we find decent bases. Not desperately in need of anything, we can keep Larzuk's NM quest handy.

and so, off we go ...

That was a scary cow level! NM cow level is no picknick if the merc is the only damage dealer. I rarely go above /p5 here.

Looking good for Hell, btw.

It's been going really well lately but my success rate in SPF tournies is still only about 1/3. At least three Deeds in Normal, even...

Fire Mage (playing one with my LoM/Golem Necro in the Committed tourney) and Prayer Guard.
That's a very impressive guardian you have, congrats!

I still can't believe you've never guardianed with a prayer merc. It's my absolute favorite act 2 merc, unless I need might I'll almost always pick him.

Well, it's my most common pick for Normal (because he's so low-maintenenace and it's nice to auto heal all my little cuts and bruises) but whenever I go with a desert guard in the long run (which isn't often because I like variety :) ) it's usually with a pretty weak character, and then HF and Might are usually more tempting because of their own better damage output.

Also, I was late at switching over to the RWM so Insight hasn't been in the picture for long.

I'm going to try to remember this next time I reach NM Cows ... although I'll probably forget.

Hell has been a breeze in comparison as Unlikely has cleared the Dark Woods and rescued Mr Cain. Players 1 makes CE truly shine. I almost get embarrassed using it. Although I do also forget that it is now a major part of my arsenal and sit around waiting for Emilio to kill things. Of course he has been 1-2 hit killing things, so it hasn't usually involved that much waiting. I've thought of going to a higher players setting, but maybe I'll just enjoy the easiness for a bit, things are sure to get hard soon enough. Nothing really note worthy, a couple of low level S/Us and nothing in the way of decent rw bases.

@jiansonz - congrats on the Guardian! I just read the writeup. Thanks for always including so much great info so we can attempt to follow in your footsteps!

@Dezrok - nice progress and good luck! Stay vigilant, you can do it!

Unlikely, Emilio and the CG have moved through to the Inner Cloister. No real dramas along the way. Some of the PIs can take a while to kill, even once Decrep has broken the immunity, but once one is down the CE speeds up the processing of the rest.

Was the game trying to tell us something in the Black Marsh? First 40% MF Chancies dropped, and then almost the next pack dropped Goldwrap. I decided to ignore this not so subtle hint to increase our MF and stick with resists, FHR and +2 Curses. Of course, there have been no decent drops either.

Even though Countess managed to drop 3 runes, they were Ith, Shael and Hel. Hardly game changing. The only elite armour to drop has been a blue Wyrmhide. And the only potentially useful weapon base to drop has bee a 4os Phaseblade, although this isn't useful for Unlikely. Still, while we could do with improving a few items of our gear, we are not really in need of anything, so the lack of drops isn't really worrying me.

Unlikely the necro and Emilio the prayer merc, Lvl 77, Hell Act 1 Inner Cloister

S/Us finally started dropping in the final session of Act 1. The Battlebranch in the Inner Cloister, then Goreshovel in the Cathedral. Catacombs 1 saw Grim's Burning Dead drop (nice +necro skills, but really, on a polearm??) and then our first Elite S/U:
View attachment 1161

Catacombs 2 gave up Tancred's Skull, while level 3 dropped Hwanin's Splendor, and then it was time to tackle Andy. Emilio died twice, but the outcome wasn't really in doubt. This was Andy's drop:

And so we completed our full clear of Hell Act 1 on level 78.

A few extra pics from throughout the Act:

So Unlikely moves on to Act 2. Just as I was thinking that rune drops had been pretty poor, a Vex dropped in the first level of the Sewers. Not particularly useful for anything but the highest rune I've seen for a very long time. Maybe I'll wait for a Zod to drop and make Emilio a BotD!!:p

After defeating Radamant, whose high phys resistance meant we took quite a while to kill him, we indulged in a bit of charm rerolling and crafting. Nothing really worthwhile to show for it though. Then it was on to the Rocky Waste and Unlikely has now become my furthest advanced tourney character ever. Nice work Unlikely! A couple of white elite armours dropped but when we socketed them they both only got 1 socket. Bloodtree Stump dropped in the Dry Hills, no good for Unlikely but still a nice weapon.

In the Far Oasis we met Black Jade the Hammer …
View attachment 1166

our first PI monster that Decrep couldn't break! We switched to the Amp Dam wand and the PI was nicely broken but his Phys Resist must have still been super high because Emilio couldn't damage him faster than he could heal. Time for Unlikely to wade into the battle and try to apply some poison from those heads he is carrying around (This may well be the first time Unlikely has hit a monster since the beginning of Normal Act 1!). That didn't appear to do anything, Unlikely's hit chance was only 9% but he still should have hit sometimes! And then we realised that Black Jade was also Poison Immune … bugger! I'd been worried about dual PI/FI bosses but never thought of this situation. Okay, what next. There were some corpses around and CE definitely did some damage to Black Jade … but not enough corpses and how do you lead one of these bugs?? Especially when it has Teleport! The couple of times we caught Black Jade in an explosion he teleported away before I could get a chain going. Guess it is time to park Black Jade and get on with clearing the area.

Down into the Maggot Lair and on the first level we came across another of these PI/Poison Immune Maggots! No teleport this time but a Fanatacism Aura instead, which meant he could actually hurt Emilio and blitz the CG. Amp would break the PI but once again he healed faster than Emilio could dish out damage. Parking two bosses in such a short space of time didn't seem right, so we went shopping … and found a War Sword of Vileness. One extra point in Str and Dex meant we could even wield it (I've been keeping 30 stat pts spare for just this sort of event). Unlikely looked mighty uncoordinated throwing that sword around,
View attachment 1167
but he hit enough to stop the boss regen and allow Emilio to slowly bring that life bar down. First Black Jade fell and then Sharp Froth the Grim! Immensely satisfying to puzzle out how to defeat these two bosses!

Down to level 3 of the Maggot Lair and Coldworm's room was the perfect location for spamming CE!

A white Wire Fleece got 3os and Treachery has been made for Emilio. Will be interesting to see how it compares to the Duriel's Shell, the loss of CBF will be felt I think.

Unlikely the necro, Emilio the Prayer merc and the CG, Lvl 79, Hell Act 2 Lost City up next

Grats on Vex!

I've worried about losing cbf to equip Treachery before, too. In my experience, Treachery gives enough attack speed that it doesn't matter.

A+ for Sword of Vileness, awesome!

Unlikely has made his way to Kurast.

Emilio tested out his new Treachery armour in the Lost City and liked it. Not really a noticeable difference to the Duriel's Shell, but then there weren't really any challenges. Ancient Tunnels were a breeze, with a very easy set of monsters for us: Plague Bearers, Embalmed and Invaders. CE fodder!

A couple of Fire Towers to take out in the Valley of the Snakes and then down into the Claw Viper Temple where some Extra Strong/Fanaticism snakes gave us a decent fight, at least until the first corpse dropped.

Then, this beautiful sight was seen:
View attachment 1288

We also picked up a 6os PB, although I'm not quite sure what Unlikely might use it for.

The Palace Cellars gave us a grailer in the shape of Stoneraven Matriarchal Spear.

Decrep had become our main curse for this Act. For CE we wanted the monsters to cluster around Emilio and DV didn't allow them to do this. However, when lots of ranged attackers were around it was back to DV. Like this point in the Palace Cellars:
View attachment 1289

After the Arcane Sanctuary I decided to use our NM Larzuk to socket the Shako and popped a PTopaz in there. Thought about using a 12% shimmering jewel, which would have allowed me to drop some resist charms and get some extra life, but both resists and life are okay as they are for now, so some extra MF is a fine thing. Unlikely has 174%, with an extra 44% on merc kills. We also imbued a spiderweb sash but got junk.

Canyon of the Magi gave us Hwanin's Justice, a white Thresher and an almost perfect 466 defence 3os Dusk Shroud.

On to the Tombs. Tomb 1 gave us an early challenge with a double Unraveller boss pack: LE/Might/Cursed and Cursed/Teleport/Mana Burn. Then these three fellows all in the chest room:
Boss 1
Boss 2
Boss 3

Tomb 2 gave us this!!!
View attachment 1290
Feeling pretty good about drops at this stage!

Tomb 3 was Kaa the Soulless' tomb and we found a 4os Cryptic Axe. Maybe a chance to upgrade our Insight. After Tomb 4 we did make a new Insight, but the rolls were terrible and while it provided about 50 more avg damage per hit (according to the LCS), it had lower Meditation aura, AR and CS … so we will stick with the eth Partizan for now. We also used the cube to socket a Thresher and Dusk Shroud. The Thresher got 3 sockets (not the 5 we were after), while the Dusky got 4 sockets making it suitable for .. Fortitude! I'm not convinced that Forti is better than Treachery on Emilio. It does double his damage, but at the loss of Venom, IAS, PDR and FHR. Still, the novelty of wearing Forti in a single pass tourney wins out, so Forti it is. Treachery kept in the stash until we find out how it goes though.

And on to Tomb 5 where we met an unbreakable PI ghost! Switched in the Amp Dam wand and still couldn't break the PI. The little bit of fire and poison damage provided by Insight was very, very slowly killing it. Swapped Emilio back into his Treachery armour and the impact of Venom was immediately obvious. It still took a bit of time to kill, but was much, much faster. However, despite my feeling that at some point it is going to land me in trouble, we switched back to the Forti and will keep that as Emilio's main armour. A Lem rune also dropped in Tomb 5.

On to the True Tomb and lo and behold, another one of these dropped!
View attachment 1291
Not sure what to do with it, maybe if a Mal drops we can make Grief and switch to an Act 5 merc.

Duriel was no problem, even without any CB. Unlikely stood to the side and cast Decrep, the CG was surprisingly resilient and Emilio tanked. Emilio does about 2000 avg damage.

Vex, Lo and Lo in one act, that is truly amazing! Looking at your clvl, seems to have been done on /p1 as well, right?

Nice going with the overall progress, too. Necros are good in this tourney, with two types of staffmodded gear and with many skills that work well with 1-few points in them.

Wow Derzok, two Lo's in a single act! That's some awesome luck. The shako is always a breath taking drop in single pass hardcore as well.

That is absolutely insane! Amazing job Dezrok, looks like you're going to end up with a seriously stylish character and merc. Maybe use that cryptic axe (if you kept it) to make another fortitude for your merc?

Sadly I don't know that it would be a huge upgrade over Insight (which is ridiculous), and the monster flee is not ideal, but a double fortitude-wielding merc in a single pass tournament would be something incredible, for sure.

Vex, Lo and Lo in one act, that is truly amazing! Looking at your clvl, seems to have been done on /p1 as well, right?

All Hell at /p1 .. even the chests.

Act 3

The Spider Forest had Cloud Stalkers, Jungle Hunters and Fetish. These guys aren't good at clumping together so CE wasn't very effective, meaning Emelio had to run around and kill most of the monsters himself. Luckily he was making 1 or 2 hit kills, so it wasn't too bad.

The Great Marsh had Gloams, Bog Creatures and Bramble Hulks. Much better for CE! The Gloams were no problem at all with either Decrep or DV. The odd River Stalker was out of reach of Emelio's partizan, so we tried to kill them with a low level Bone Spirit (from a +2 Bone Spirit head we had just found).
View attachment 1307
Avg damage was about 85 and we would slowly move their life bar down until they sank beneath the waters, to emerge again later fully healed. After persisting with this tactic for a while I decided that they just weren't worth the effort for a small amount of XP and no drop. For the rest of the Act we left them alone (except for the couple that Emelio could reach).

After clearing the Flayer Jungle I decided that I liked this idea:

Maybe use that cryptic axe (if you kept it) to make another fortitude for your merc?

So we said goodbye to Emelio and Insight and welcomed Jemali the double Fortitude Might Merc to the team. Jemali does around 3200 avg damage and has over 10,000 defense once Chilling Armor is triggered. He does tend to miss a fair bit more than Emelio however. He also has no elemental damage, so we have no solution for any unbreakable PIs that we might meet.

Down into the Swampy Pit to try out the new team and immediately faced with Gloams and Undead Soul Killers. The very first pack Unlikely stood too close to a Soul Killer and lost half his life in one explosion. That is the biggest hit to our life bulb for a long time! So, a bit more caution was used while we got the hang of things. We had no life regen and slow mana regen. We could now run out of mana spamming CE and had to keep an eye on our life bulb. Poison was also a problem now, even with 75% poison resist it still does damage. So we started using red pots and put a row of blue pots into the belt. The double Forti combo felt much more dangerous than Insight, however, I'm not sure that it really was. Mostly it was getting used to a very different playing style and remembering to keep an eye on that life bulb. Jemali got through the rest of the Act without dying and with only the odd pot needed to keep him alive, so I guess it can't be all that bad a combo:)

So the rest of the Act went pretty smoothly. No stair traps in the Temples. The Council kept quiet pretty quiet with DV and Decrep. Dolls in the Durance meant we moved cautiously, but didn't cause any real problems. Then Mephisto himself fell to Jemali's poking, although we did have to use a single purple!
