Now, where the heck is that elusive Shael!

Well, under the rules, I guess I am done. Met up with a two boss pack combo, in the Kurast Bazaar. Zakarumite/Zealots, or whatever they are, with the life regen from their bosses. One pack Aura enchanted/? and one Cursed/Extra Fast I didn't play it real smart, but then again, there were monsters everywhere. Ran for my life, a whole lot. Somehow, my merc survived. But, one big mistake was in my frenzy of play I didn't revive my Shadow. You know when she dies, it's tough, with 1400 life. With amp dmg being cast upon us, over and over again, and with up to 20 zealots, and some Thorned Hulks to boot, it was a struggle. We whittled them down, though. Got braver, and kept casting Cloak, trying to get to those bosses. Took one out. But, the Cursed one was still ticking, with less than half his life. I was out of health pots, and made the mistake of engaging him, thinking if my merc helped, we might be able to end this madness. He took me down to very low on my health ball, real quick, as I got cursed again. I ran like hell, but with the extra fast boss not heeding my Cloak, and keeping right on my tail, all the way back into Lower Kurast, I knew I was in for it. One more hit, and my level 60 character was a goner. Save and exit.

In retrospect, I might have been able to make it to the Waypoint, and maybe they would have gotten trapped on the other side, if I made it around the corner. But, I didn't want to take the chance. Every time I turned, he was right on my tail, and swinging.

Another reason for this situation is it was right on the southern wall of the area. So, there was nowhere to backtrack, to spread this big group out. It was a very small area, with lots of bobbing and weaving.

I'm just glad she'll live to see another day. Ah, well. Learned quite a bit about playing a Shadow Warrior. Now I guess I can flesh her out, with some skills she needs in other trees.

I had been having some real nice MF luck, of late, too, finding Sigon's armor and a Bladebuckle belt, in close proximity in a Tower run. Got an Ort on that one, too. Got my 2nd Isenharts Lightbrand, an Arcannas staff, and Iratha's gauntlets, too.

I knew I should have lowered my players X! Heed my warning! Those zealots, etc, would have gone down a lot quicker, and I'd still be in the tourney, if I had set it lower, I think.

Steady progress. I don't have any problems right now... although my merc seems to kill a lot faster than I do. Nothing wrong with that ... if HE dies I can resurrect him. The other way wouldn't work ;) I made some attempt to get Goblin Toe, but it turned out as expected: I didn't find any and it got boring soon enough. Now I'm on my way towards Duriel, and then A3. As always, the first really big obstacle will be Diablo (or me getting careless).

Halls of the dead.....I have been trying to get to the waypoint for some time now but always ended up retreating because my minions couldnt handle the hords of monsters. Just too many. WAY to many. The layout of the map were as follows : Door to the right when I can down, door infront of me and a corridor to the left leading round the stairs and joining the corridor which came from the right door.

Well my merc ran strainght through the door in front of me and so did the rest of my minions. My merc took a beating and I decided to summon a grizzly between him and the helcats which threw ALOT of spears at him. So far so good. My merc survived and my grizzly could easily handle the spears. I noticed a mummy comming from the left corridor and since I was unprotected I decided to enter the corridor where my minions where fightning. The mummy came closer and then a skeleton came from the opposite direction and took a swing at me - my health dropped to about 1/5... I panicked, hit a potion, ran through the door again, past the mummy which where just TOO slow and into the other corridor - the one I hadnt seen yet....2 champion hellcats where waiting for me - one spear did it. IllBeDeadSoon fell motionless to the ground and his minions evaporated into thin air......

nice to hear you made so much progress

Off I go plowing through Radament's Lair having a good ol' time. Two boss's and a frikken gaggle of skellies almost owned me (one was aura enchanted) so the whole screen was lit up with red glowing enemies. I eventually got through that mess and got to Radament himself. Took him down without much trouble and was looking at the various useless drops that were there. Picked up the littke clicky book thing and promptly died. WTF happened you may ask? That wicked poison and a severe stupid moment on my part... :o

Semarin... dead at level 54. Had almost nothing worth stashing, maybe that one Bonesnap and a number of Pgems.

Kinda annoyed as I know that a ShadowSin can get through Hell in this tourney.

I'm proud to introduce Conqueror Sheanna.

I didn't have much playtime in the last two days, so had to wait until late tonight to finish NM. It was quite easy going with a good Valk and good use of Decoy. Only one NDE when I stupidly didn't use decoy to scout, but ran into a bulk of Soulkiller, ghould lords and Beetles...turned on my heals and luckily got a decoy of. Baal and his Minions are a pushover. Not even my badly equipped merc died against lister. I used the Riphook I found against his pack and Baal. Stupid me forgot to use that one against the Ancients, so a lot of running in narrow circles as that leaper ignored merc, valk and later decoy as well. (Narrow circles because decoy kept the whirler busy and I didn't want to disturb there). It wasn't dangerous, just a bit hectic. :)

I found the aforementioned Riphook and Skystrike on my way, so my bows to select from look a bit better, but still nothing to write home about.
I'll do some Meph and probably Baal runs before I move on to Hell.

I need better equipment for my merc as I have the sneaking suspiscion that my valk will not be able to do all the killing in Hell. She rocks with max decoy and max penetrate. I normally just cast decoy and wait until there is no more action going on. I do shoot some arrows to not get bored, but don't really kill anything. :)

I messed around running Mephisto for a little while and found an Angelic Ammy which I promptly equipped along with the armour and 2 rings for some very nice bonuses. Entered Act 4 on /players 5 and promptly got swamped by a couple off bosspacks including a Holy Freeze boss which were just too tough to handle, so I parked them and lowered the players setting to 3. After that I had no furtheer difficulties through act 4, Hellforge gave me a Hel :( and Diablo went down quickly enough with no significant damage to me thanks to the efforts of my Grizzly and Merc.

Onwards to Act 5 and the Bloody Foothills where I popped a chest and out came a Unique Ring! I Ided it immediately, expecting a Nagle but I got a Ravenfrost :D . Then in the Frigid Highlands I found a Captain's Grand Charm of Lightning (+1 Off Auras).

I think I'm really getting the hang of how to play this character and hopefully he'll be in this tournament for a lot longer, although he has now spent all of the skill points he is likely to need in the summoning tree. Grizzly, HoW and Dire Wolf maxed with 5 in Spirirt wolf and 1 each in the pre requisites. He already has 5 points saved up and unless I feel the urge to invest in vines I guess they'll have to wait until he dies to go into some elemental skills.

Hell is a lot tougher as NM, I can only progress very slowly through the first bits of Act 1. I had a little hope of trying to run countess/pits, but only seeing these first quill rats I don't think that's a good idea. I definately need a little bit more gear with +skills if I want to make some progress and survive.

The great victory was achieved by me at this weekend! Diablo II won the battle against Dungeon Siege II. :)

Oh, I have played quite a few. Got through Act 1, 2 and a half of 3 at the Friday, finished Nightmare at the Saturday and tried Hell at Sunday.

Nightmare difficulty was easy thanks to high-level Venom and Shadow. However, I got one NDE due to my stupid panic when undead stygian dolls surrounded me in Kurast Sewers. Fortunately I managed to exit this situation thanks to good blocking, large amount of Full purples on my belt and good life meter. After that I learned not to panic anymore and use Mind Blast and Terror Wand wisely. /players1 was used all the way, save for act bosses: /players5 Andariel, /players5 Duriel and /players7 Mephisto. Diablo, Ancients and Baal was handled at /players1 in honor to them. :D

But Hell difficulty is a whole different story… I’m very interested in how all other Shadow Disciplines only Assassins may kill at least the weakliest monster there. Personally I easily cleared my way to the Den of Evil, killed everyone there and then managed to enter the Burial Ground. But my God, Blood Raven raise zombies much faster then I can kill them. :( I tried every single tactic I know, but no luck. I just lack of pure damage. My merc is doing 1400+ damage, I’m doing 1100+ and I think my level 28 Shadow Master should do at least 1000+ with her rare elite claws and Might Aura that I have chosen. What more they need?

So next time if I defeat DSII I will be leveling in the Den of Evil with 200+ MF%.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune billybgame :(

I was great fun trying out a summon druid :) I have never gotten one this far before. Im thinking off starting another one up for this tourney correcting the mistakes I made with IllBeDeadSoon : like low dex  5 points in poison creeper...

This one will be a hunter druid and this time around I know what kind of weapon hell be fighting with : a bow :D

BTW shall I send the prize stash now Corax?

I have a late entry to announce! I've been meaning to post an update for a while now, but always got distracted... :uhhuh:

I decided to play a Summons Druid, for two reasons:
1. Never played a Druid
2. Never had more than one minion

My Druid, named Oberon, features maxed Ravens as a permanent part of his little zoo army. I have absolutely zero experience with them, but what the heck, I'll try anything once.
All of my early skill points went into Raven, to boost their damage quickly. I figured Act 1-2 Normal was the only time their damage would be useful. Indeed, when I had 5 ravens, pecking away with 17-19 damage per hit, they did a fair job of racking up kills. Far more importanty, the frequency they caused "blinding hits" increased big-time. I'm guessing high-level ravens trigger high-level Dim Vision, hopefully with a decent duration if I reach Hell.

I soon gambled a fine rare broad axe to make life easier. Not bad for "required level 3". Early on, I noticed Druids can swing some big two-handers "Very Fast", according to their stats as I browsed Charsi. No complaints from me.
Fiona the Fire Rogue was helping me out, (Isolde was available at a higher level, but I understand she's taken) until Act 2, when I hired a Defiance Merc and gave him an Eld-Eld rare bardiche with LL. After cubing several diamonds with the polearm recipe, I scored a Savage Partizan of the Leech, for future use. Nice.

As for Oberon, by Act 3 I cubed a Brutal Maul w/ 2 sockets. I gladly used a +damage/MF jewel to make this. Skill-wise, I continued to develop Dire Wolves, with only one point going to the pre-req Spirit Wolf. Our combined damage, assisted by level 1 Spirit of Wolverine and rapid p8 leveling, soon overwhelmed our foes. I tried out Carrion Vine as well, and appreciated the life bursts and corpse disposal it provided.
The Witch Doctor dropped some awesome boots! I've been on a hot-streak with boots lately. I also found Milabrega's shield, and the MF it provided marked the end of my two-hand weapon attack. By Act 4 the Merc and wolves were easily outpacing me on kills anyway, so I didn't need the maul anymore. I saw my worst Hellforge drop ever. (Eld, PSkull, Sapph)

Early in Act 5 I found my first Shael rune, and made a "Rhyme" Tower Shield. I had no problems finishing Act 5. I maxed Dire Wolf and began building Grizzly for the passive damage bonus for the wolves. I plan to use the wolves more than the Grizzly, to ensure my Merc scores most of the kills for the extra MF. The ravens have been working better than I'd hoped. Their constant harassment turns monster mobs into stumbling, bumbling fools.
A very unusual find in a bonus lava area: a demon dropped a MINOR healing potion. I never saw a minor potion that late in Normal. Game error perhaps?

Act 1 NM started well, I quickly found a String of Ears Demonhide Sash. I like the stats, but I can't help wondering if a plain ole' Resistance Belt of the Whale would be better, especially considering that Druids only get 2 life per stat point (how disappointing when I learned this!) Also, I'll probably build Oak Sage, which could double all my sources of life.
A Tristram monster dropped a new merc weapon. It's no Hone Sundan, but I'll take it. I upgraded a one-hander for Oberon, to help out a bit.

I tried to cube a 4-socket gothic plate before Andariel. I wasted a precious PTopaz on the attempt, and ended up with 1 lousy socket! Doh! My Topaz luck has not been good. My merc is still wearing the 3-chip topaz ring mail from Normal Charsi. Embarrassing! (At least he has a Circlet of Luck.) Oberon is wearing a 3 PTopaz Artisan's Great Helm and a 3-Normal Topaz Breast Plate.
However, my rune luck has been fantastic! By the end of Act 1, I had FIVE Shaels, along with a Sol, and a couple Amns/Thuls. Best of all, I found an Io from a coffin in the Catacombs. That was high on my wishlist, for making a "Black."

At this point, I was running dual PC/Mac systems, sharing a monitor in my home office. (I should have done this long ago.) So I installed ATMA on the PC and starting building my first-ever stash, via email transfer. Good timing, since I soon found some potentially useful freezing items, dropped simultaneously from different monsters.

I hired a Might Merc to start Act 2. I'll use him throughout NM. I might switch to a Rogue if I reach Hell, or possibly continue with Might. Item drops will help decide for me. I'll probably use a "Black" for endgame, although I did find an excellent weapon in the desert. Sweet! I rolled 160% on the ED, which is OK, and the +1 druid skill is nice, with other great mods too. A great weapon switch (with Sigon's shield) for casting summons and applying PMH.

Other useful finds so far:
Sigon's Gloves, Boots, and Shield
Crimson (+6 min damage) Jewel of Fervor
Hawkmail
Peasant Crown
Ocher (20%) Ring of Fortune (21%)

Oberon, Summons Druid, level 56, Act 2 NM, Jerhyn's Palace
"vanilla" 1.10 HC
Total MF: 263%, and 324% for Fazel´s kills

RIP to the recently fallen... good progress guys!
and congrats on the Conqueror WoL, some good finds there too

Just curios whether this name is connected to Oberon the King of Amber? Roger Zelazny is my favorite writer!

Good luck to Oberon anyway! I hope to read your farther reports about how you kill monsters in Hell difficulty with this build. :)

I knew my MF craziness would eventually pay off. An early UGP boss dropped one of the best items possible at this stage. Lovely! It increased our killing speed immensely.
(Of course, I could have found this item anyway, with 0% MF. No way to know that...)

I also found a 2-socketed Tower Shield. I regret that I sold the one I found in early act 3 Normal. Turns out that didn´t matter, as I haven´t found a Shael yet.

I have a skill point saved, since I don´t know what I am going to do with it (and future points).

* I will need more points in Attract if it´s going to be useful later (3 seconds in Hell won´t be enough). But I don´t know if I want to use it. It feels "messy" and I only want to use it if it can control dangerous melee bosses/champions I can´t control in other ways (Decrepify + throwing weapon with cold damage and Knockback comes to mind). I need some more testing, but it looks like a boss isn´t fooled if I Attract one of its minions.

* There are a few desperate situations where high-level Iron Maiden could be useful (I picture Isolde dead, and Mark surrounded by tough melee Champions, where one of them is almost dead but Mark can hardly get any swings off. Then he could be saved by IM.)

* Lower Resist will mainly be useful against the select few PIs where Amp won´t break it. The diminishing returns are severe right off the bat. The second point I invested only added 6%-units to the resistance redution. It´s probably worth a few more points.

* I don´t want any more points in Amplify Damage. Level 4 is just right. I want to be able to select a couple of monsters to Amp inside a Dimmed mob. A bigger radius will make for a more blunt instrument.

* Confuse? Don´t know if I like that either. I suppose that if I ambush a boss pack before they have moved, I could turn all the minions against the boss and indirectly control and maybe even damage the boss. A longer duration might be helpful then. This is a long shot, especially since you can´t override Confuse with Dim Vision or Terror.

* Life Tap? Could be good for Isolde against some archer bosses. But it´s cheap to cast and the duration is good enough already at level 1.

Any suggestions?

@Warrior of Light:
As I understand it, Blood Raven raises "invisible" Hungry Dead corpses. A couple of times, I have been able to get her to stay in a small part of the graveyard, and then she eventually runs out of corpses to raise, even in Hell.
BTW, lovely rare boots and belt.

@Insane Wayne:
Welcome! I knew you were following the tournament, and I had a feeling you would eventually enter it.
Summoner Druids are cool. I had a Hunter in 1.09, but he had Armageddon as backup against PIs (as well as a decent Cyclone Armor). I guess your druid will play much like a Valkazon (and I know you can handle those...) when it comes to PIs in Hell.
Some nice finds there. Our friend Fleshrender again, and all those runes. Not bad! Have you completed the 'Black' weapon yet?
Good to see another "MF nutcase." You are ahead of me now, but I have potential to improve fast: Rhyme is hopefully mine soon, and Isolde has an empty socket in her Artisan´s Great Helm (no, she couldn´t escape it!). Nice gesture that you didn´t "borrow" Isolde for your character. ;)

I wish you could see “The Battle At The Entrance To The Burial Groundsâ€. Since Blizzard didn’t include demo recording to the game (blame Durf), I’ll do my best to write some sort of scenario in my broken English.

Acting persons
Soledad. The main hero. Toll white woman with black hair and brown eyes. It seems she have no taste in clothes unless it is modern S&M style. She wears black lather jacket and skirt under steel mail. On her head you can see strange brown leather cap. Her boots seems to be male heavy metal coated ones. She carry strange weapon and round shield.
Shadow Master. Twin sister of Soledad. You may distinguish them only by two strange swords, that Shadow carries. Unlike her sister Master are much more brave and skillful, however she doesn’t look much smart.
Haseen. Swarthy Arab. Wears red clothes and carries rather long stick.
Blood Raven. Keen white woman in stylish wear. Carries bow.
Zombies. Numerous undeads without definitive gender. Wears dirty rags with blood tracks on them.

Act 1. Cold Plains Waypoint.
Soledad enters the scene alone with Haseen. They come to tree shrine with a sign of open hand flying above. Hand sign disappears.

Soledad: Finally! I said you that we’ll find a skill shrine soon.
Haseen: Very well, now your Shadow will be much tougher at level 28.

Soledad does several passes with her hands with two metal claws in them. Shadow appears near hear.

Shadow: Indeed! We’ll kick some <censored>!
Haseen: Don’t say so before we did it.
Soledad: Enough talking! Move, move!

The group retires in direction of some Fallens, that wonder around.

Act 2. Burial Grounds.
The group enters the big graveyard. Spectators may see a lot of undeads there among graves, crypts and mausoleums. Our heroes doesn’t look tired at all, however Shadow’s weapon are coated with fresh blood and poison as well at Soledad’s one. Heseen looks perfect as always. You may see him emanating Might aura. During the act Shadow several times becomes transparent for a short period of time.

Shadow (creates few traps at the edge of metal fence around the graveyard): Doesn’t look hard. Just a pack of weak zombies.
Soledad: We should be careful. I know there we will find worthy enemy.
Haseen: OK. You are the boss. But where they is?
Soledad: She is hiding somewhere. Lets start by clearing the perimeter.

The warriors form triangle formation with Shadow and Haseen at front and Soledad at the back organizing the attack. They strike nearest group of enemies, after that Soledad join others formatting a line. The battle looks like a front against front. Soon all undeads lie down and the heroes goes to the next enemies wondering around the graveyard. Heseen uses plain jabbing attacks, Soledal just hits with her weapon and blocks with the shield, so camera usually shows Shadow, that is demonstrating impressive dual wielding martial art skills with all kinds of jumps and kicks.

Eventually the perimeter of the graveyard becomes clear. The group finally spots the woman organizing the resistance of poor zombies. It is Blood Raven. It seems undeads are listening to her.

The voice or Blood Raven: Join my army of dead!
Shadow: Lets finish her off!
Haseen: Really, what we are waiting for?
Soledad: She can raise more zombies. Since we cannon kill a zombie in 1-2 hits we should try to lure them out of her then kill her when she’ll be alone.

Zombies start approaching to our friends. Blood Raven starts bow shooting. The warriors start killing them. The great battle begins!

While many zombies fall finally dead, more come from the graveyard with reinforcements raised by Blood Raven. Our heroes step back to the entrance.

Eventually the frontline stops exactly at the entrance to the Burial Grounds area. Endless amount of zombies, blinded by Cloak of Shadow cannot surround live fighters. At the other hand warriors cannot kill all zombies at once. The battle becomes long lasting. Sometimes our party kills most of zombies around and converts the rest, but more undeads come from the graveyard and all repeats. Sometimes zombies kills Haseen, but Soledad just teleports somewhere to bring alive resurrected mercenary back.

The party demonstrate even more deadly tactics: Life Tape rushes, total conversion, Lower Resistance Venom Attacks, Shadow Master’s Death Sentry Corpse Explosions and many others, but no luck. It seems the forces are equal.

Soledad: Well, we should stop.
Shadow: No! We will kill this <censored> <censored> Raven or die!
Haseen: Unfortunately I have to agree with Soledad. It would be better to retreat this time. But sometime we will be back!

Curtain.

@Warrior of Light: nice, I had a simular problem with Blood Raven.

I first tried to fight the huge pack of zombies as well, just as useless as your attempt was.

Than I switch to fighting blood raven only an try to ignore the huge pack. I casted my wolves directly next to her (a lot, as she moves fast). While moving myself in such a way that my merc also tries for blood raven.

Your advantage here is that blood raven is a lot faster has the zombie pack, as soon as she is away from it, it takes some time before the zombies catch up. Don't waste your time on the pack, keep focussing on blood raven.

OK, I think I can picture the battle. Great write-up!

Killing the "perimeter" undead is the right thing to do, then I suggest these three changes for future battles:

* Items with Crushing Blow. Make a Strength weapon if you haven´t found anything better. On low players setting, Blood Raven will go down a lot quicker if you have a good amount of CB.

* Before you start the battle, get rid of all the undead. ALL of them! Every time Raven sees you and there are zombies on the same screen, pull back your forces out of her awareness range, then approach slowly and lure the zombies to you. You may need to approach from different directions to get them all. The shadow is hard to control; you may need to Unsummon her during the luring raids and summon her back when you have collected an isolated pack of zombies to kill.

* Once you commit to the assault, chase Blood Raven relentlessly and don´t care about the zombies. Her fleeing behaviour will often get the two of you away from the zombie pack that forms (especially if you place your character between Raven and the zombie pack, so she runs away from them) and if you force her to run a lot, she won´t have time to summon that many. But if a monster-sized pack forms, Raven insists on staying among them and it gets too dangerous, you should abandon the assault and repeat the action in the previous paragraph ^.

Blood Raven doesn´t regenerate any life (unless you get so far away from her that she gets "respawned", or if she has a bow with life steal) so you will defeat her in the end. I have never failed to, not even with very underpowered builds.

Nope... It was beer that inspired my character's name. Durf is proud of me.
The name Oberon is Germanic. Possible meanings: "noble, masculine, and bear-like". I felt it was appropriate for a Druid.

To solve the PI problem, I might use a Fire Rogue throughout Hell. Her Inner Sight could also boost my poor AR. I haven't made the "Black" yet. First I need to find/cube a 3-socket Knout. I have a couple Elds ready, for the Low Quality --> Normal recipe you taught me.

MF is king. I hope I can get to ~450% for Fazel's kills by Act 5 NM. Like you, I'm suffering with sub-par gloves. Mine are Heavy Gloves of Fortune (25%). But I do have a decent pair for Hell, with 16% Cold Resist, 27% Lightning Resist, and 8% MF.
