Single Skill Tree Tourney

Oh.. and I found thunder stroke javelins.. but can't use them because of the +3 lightning thingie.. sucks

Yes you can :D, as long as you don´t use the Lightning Bolt skill. The rules are very clear about this. Only passive (and beneficial) skills from banned trees make an item forbidden to use.

Congratulations WoL, quite an achievement. As for my progress with Tanky, I've decided to withdraw. I've reignited my passion for Heroes of Might and Magic 3, and I just don't have a lot of time for Diablo at the moment, especially a character like her which I was not enjoying playing.

I also realised I can add a Crow Caw to my prize stash from Primal, I overlooked ity initially since it was equipped on my merc.

Ah cool.. I tried to equip it just to see how it effected my damage and my max damage was tripled because of the lightning damage on it (1-511)

I had better luck with the council members on Mephistos level.. One of them was cursed and threw aplify damage on us.. My merc didn't live long but my valkyrie took them out singlehanded, only with a little help from my decoy so she didn't take all the damage.. she hardly ever dropped in health.. I cleared the rooms and resurrected my merc and went for Mephisto.. He wasn't hard to kill at all.. especially not with my decoy arround cause he attacks that first..

Off to act 4.. I have been re rolling maps in hope for a plain of Despair without the burning souls.. So far no luck..

I've reached level 80

What shall I say... Mithuad is dead. He fell to a cursed undead stygian doll in severs level 2.

I got a bit distracted and just wanted to complete this last bit of the sewers. Big mistake, of course.

Well, perhaps I'll have better luck next time ;)

R.I.P. Mithuad. Nasty bugger down there, and there is not much room to fight either. Drawing a boss bone fetish is unlucky, Sewers lvl 2 is often completely empty (except for the three Stygian Watchers that are always there).

Mark and Isolde have progressed quite a bit (by my standards). An early poison cat boss in Lost City was exceptionally generous.

This is actually the first Goldstrike Arch I have seen, and that is with a character (or, in this case, merc) that can really use it. Talk about striking gold! :D
The "forced" wearing of our MF armors because of the lack of IAS jewels and Sol runes may have been a blessing in disguise.

Ha! I switched to /p3 right away, then did Ancient tunnels on /p5. I got it done, but it was a bit tedious even for me. Back to /p1 for the rest of the act, except for Duriel.

Good thing I took it down before the Claw Viper Temple! A Multishot Guardian boss was waiting for us, as close to the entrance as monsters can get. The Bone Warriors were cold immune even with Lower Resist on them, so there was no chance to shatter them, and there was as good as no way I could get Isolde to fire at the boss with them around (Terror doesn´t last long enough. It may have worked, but it wouldn´t have been easy to keep up the Terroring and positioning and dodging Unholy Bolts at the same time...).

I opened a door, but soon backed out. Another Guardian boss, and snakes too. What about the door right next to the first boss? Nope, the first square meters were completely PACKED with undead. I cast Dim Vision and ran (past some Embalmed) to the third door. The Embalmed, the skellies that the snakes that followed were Dimmed and shot. What? An Embalmed minion walked through the closed door?!? That´s so not fair! I quickly opened the door, Dimmed them and checked the boss. No FE, good. That means I don´t need to move away from the minion when it dies. The boss was CE. My very limited space made me decide to let Mark take that death nova, with 23% cold resistance. Ouch. After that ordeal, this direction was the way to go, and I cleared the entire floor easily.

I was very careful on level 2. Slowly advanced and secured space around the left side of the altar platform, then ran for it when I had the chance. Hell Fangskin has about 15% chance to spawn with FE, so I didn´t want to risk having her chasing us before I knew I could tank her. Good plan, since she did spawn with FE!

I decided to do a little bow comparison. I had three bows, and had plans to aim for another one once I had met up with Asheara.

Shadow Bolt does 67-119 damage (93 average), with attack speed of 15 fpa.

Double-Shaeled Ferocious Crusader Bow of Quality does 44-188 (116), 13 fpa.

Goldstrike Arch is hard to rate. With no further IAS, Isolde reaches 12 fpa with it.
The 5% chance to cast lvl 7 Fist of the Heavens on striking averages out to about 13 lightning damage per shot  , which is almost irrelevant (and the Holy Bolts are useless (other than looking cool!)).
The physical damage is:
vs. "animals": 30-150 (90 average)
vs. undead: 41-209 (125)
vs. demons: 42-214 (128)
So it beats the Ferocious bow in damage (except against animals) and it´s faster. Therefore, I sold the Ferocious bow and Shadow Bolt.
It´s hard for me to make Goldstrike Arch faster than it already is. I need either two IAS jewels or one IAS jewel and burn a socket reward + Shael to reach 11 fpa.
Another factor to consider is the huge AR bonus: +133%! Combine that with the fact that Isolde is now on par (and often above) the monster levels, it´s not strange that she misses very little with GA, even when she hasn´t cast Inner Sight.

Is it worth it bothering with rerolling an elite bow? Tough call. A Crusader Bow is not the way to go, because the IAS table isn´t nice for that type of bow if it´s to compete against GA. What about a Ward Bow? Suppose I can roll a good (+270% ED) Cruel with two sockets. Such a bow would do 74-196 damage (135 average), with the same attack speed as Goldstrike (if I double-Shael it). That would be better. Also, a single IAS jewel gets it to the next breakpoint.

Mostly safe progress during the rest of the act. Mark could tank mobs of 5-6 normal ghosts as long as they were kept Decrepified.

Check out this lucky situation! Big awfully-brutal boss got pwned by a row of urns! His minions too, for that matter...

Killed the slug (three no-drops of five on /p3, that´s unlucky. Got only a magical Coronet and a rare Dirk.). Killed the Waderer´s Flesh Beasts, then went bow shopping at Asheara´s Inconvenience Store. Really lucky, got a Ward Bow on my fifth visit!

Burned two chippie triplets, all regular gems (>100) and a couple of flawless triplets. No score. Now I am trying to decide if I should burn more flawless gems or if they should go to cube more perfects, so I can get more rerolling chances with my ilvl 43 jewel (I want 'of Fervor'!).

Oh, damn!

R.I.P. Mithuad.

It is so bad to die in last difficulty. As I said in my progress posts, I hate stygian dolls as much as Oblivion Knights, — two my worst enemies when I play melee characters.

Jiansonz, well done with nice progress! Watch for our favorite temples in Act 3. ;) I got a stair trap when searching Tome, easily handled it with Cloak of Shadows and Mind Blast, however skipped other temples for security reasons.

R.I.P. Mithuad.. Strygians are nasty.. they were the cause of my first chars (LiveAndLetDie) death too.. :( Are you starting up a new char??

Last time I was here I was trying to get a game without the burning souls in the Plains of Dispair.. First time I started up a game yesterday I was lucky to get such a game.. I found Isual and took him down and I proceeded to find the waypoint in City of the Damned.. I didn't have more time to spend so that is where I will start next time I have some time to play.

First order of business for Oberon: discard unlucky cube and replace with new cube from Halls of the Dead. Success! And I found Rattlecage along the way. I'll put that on the merc for end bosses.
With my new cube, I tried a few elite spear rerolls, and quickly scored a Savage (80%) Stygian Pike of Measure, with 2 sockets. I used two of my Shaels to get the speed up, and finally retired Fazel's "Hwanin's Bill" forever. It was a good improvement, but not great.

I continued a steady p5 clear of the desert, and soon found a nice new ring. Excellent AR roll! A plain stygian pike dropped with the ring, and I thought it would be good luck to try an imbue. The game tricked me again when I saw it was black, but only had +min damage. No good.

I had to break out my improved Djinn Slayer in the Maggot Lair, to deal with PI swarms. I went down to p1 to make it tolerable. After getting the staff, it was back to the desert fun. I had an NDE when I confused my ravens with Black Raptors. Yikes! They can hit hard, with a potent poison attack too.

After an uneventful clear of the Ancient Tunnels, it was time for the dreaded Viper Temple. At least there were no unravelers, so I went to p5. Plenty of FE mummies though, some with LE/Spectral Hit. I had to stay in the background.
I went down to p1 for level 2, and it was a good thing I did. Fangskin's pack was unusually close to the entrance, and the other half of the hallway was plugged by a mummy boss pack. There was no time to scout out the boss, I was face-to-face with Fangskin himself (or herself), and losing ground. As the wolves and I killed snakes, I noticed Fazel making no progress with the mummies. And no wonder! Not against this guy! Time for some decrep. Good thing I worked on the snakes, and not those mummy minions.

The rest of Act 2 was unremarkable. I had to drop to p1 for the False Tombs because of the PI ghosts. Duriel was extremely tough. He was one-hitting my wolves faster than I could cast them! Even the grizzly went down quick, needing a recast every few seconds. Luckily he completely ignored the merc. He dropped a new item for me, the unique Winged Helm, which spawned with +2 zon skills and went to the prize stash.

I went on a tear in the jungles of Act 3! No problems with p5 and still getting over 300% MF for merc kills. First, I found Laying of Hands Bramble Mitts, followed quickly by an ethereal unique Tyrant Club. And it has auto-repair!
That's some powerful one-handed damage. Boosted with Might, Oberon now deals about 1000-1700 damage, and that's not even counting +473% demon damage, Deadly Strike, or Decrep... :D

However, I sadly realized "auto-repair" doesn't apply to the Enchant charges. I would gladly trade the etherealness for unlimited access to Enchant. It would solve my AR problems for good. As it stands, I only use the charges for special occasions, like this guy, with his unbreakable PI. I have 9 charges left...

Another lucky find --- a "natural" 5-socket Thresher, produced in the field. I made an "Honor", and tossed the pike. I also socketed Fazel's Iceblink, and inserted a fervor jewel with +6 min damage. I have one more fervor jewel left, with +42 defense.

No problems with the rest of the forest, and soon I was pillaging Kurast. p7 for lower Kurast. p5 eveything else, and p1 for the Temples. Icehawk was CEFELE  . Handled him with care. I went to p8 before going to sewer level 2, and luckily there were no monsters there except the annoying river snakes. One of the chests dropped a sweet 303%ED rare scythe, but I lack the runes to upgrade it to elite. I ran into another CEFELE boss just outside the sewers. Sneaky game, trying to catch me off guard. What are the odds of consecutive CEFELE bosses??

Four of the temples had stairtraps. By far, the worst was a Might/FE/Spectral Hit Wailing Beast pack. Before things could get ugly, Fazel and Decrep took out the boss. Close call.
The last temple produced the unique Grand Charm. It's my second Gheed's ever, this one has great rolls on the MF and Gold Find. I love it! Now my full-time MF is up to 358%.

After dispatching a pesky pack of Heiro Champs (eventually using the bear's knockback for separation) I finshed off Act 3 without any problems. Meph's drop was lame.

I took Oberon to the City of the Damned waypoint, clearing all the areas on p3. Nothing noteworthy until the very last corner of the City. A new item for Oberon, the unique Mithril Coil. I gave up the MDR on String of Ears to equip this. It rolled low on the +vitality, but considering the life boost from Oak Sage, it's a good trade I think.

@Warrior -- congrats on your stunning Guardian run. I missed a few days, and suddenly you're finished. I've never seen such an amazing Hell blitz. Nice gear too, I see you put Rattlecage on your merc. I tried it but the Monster Flee drove me crazy. I prefer the freezing from Iceblink.

@Cormallon -- RIP Mithuad. That's the worst place to draw a boss doll pack. Very unlucky. At least your merc got to try that awesome thresher for a while.

@Shadefallen -- nice progress, we're about even now. Act 5 will be fun. Good luck.

@jiansonz -- Don't be discouraged when monsters walk through doors.
It's not a bug; some "doors" are simply an illusion created by an "evil force". That's what Blizz told me when I called to complain.
Excellent bow! I'm familiar with it. Goldstrike's ED stats are highly variable. Glancing at your numbers, it looks like you rolled poorly. And yet it's still better than 99.9% of other bows. Definite end-game material. Congrats.
I can't believe you did p5 in Ancient Tunnels. Good show.

Nice weapon, and I am glad I´m not the only player that thinks Iceblink on a merc is great. It´s a very underrated armor, IMO. At level 86, Fazel will shatter nearly any non-(CI or boss) he kills.

Not likely at all. Slightly more probable than normally with Icehawk involoved, though, because of the native CE.

These "illusions" are new in 1.10, right?
How come my character can´t walk through it if it´s an illusion? Or maybe I can? Have to try that sometimes.
(In Barracks, Jail and Maggot Lair, one can often walk though closed doors that you sort of happen to "double click" when you intend to open them. What´s needed to get them to stay open visally as well, is a very short and rapid mouse click)

Well, Mark has excellent crowd control, poison damage and PMH to prevent regeneration, and most monster types are slow enough that Decrepify and a little retreat room allows Isolde to fire dozens of shots before Mark even needs to do some tanking, so it really wasn´t dangerous. I play the level 85 areas so rarely that I want to take some grailing chances when I get there. But it sure took a long time, especially since I didn´t draw any wimpy mages, just mummies, zombies and Invaders.

Thanks! Actually I have spent a month playing in the Hell difficulty.

Poor Soledad never got an Iceblink to test. I tried this armor a few times with other chars, — it works impressive.

Monster flee wasn’t much problem too. I found two Rattlecages. One was equipped by Soledad, the other — by Haseen. When we came to a pack of monsters we fought in a line formation. So some monsters fled away to not-yet-cleared part of the area. When a monster was alone, we played a nice tennis game with him. Imagine this!

Good luck in the last two acts!

Easy progress, but Mark did suffer an NDE. The missiles from a cold enchanted Gloam boss were scary indeed. I went back to the Docks and buffed up our cold resistances with potions. Then it wasn´t so bad. You really need to be alert around these critters. Later, there was another such CE pack. I heard them fire in time to avoid all but a few minions shots. That could have been really dangerous if I had not been on my toes.

I stopped by Asheara to hear one of my favourite quotes:

Asheara: "Such a beautiful statuette, but you think it would´ve been better cared for. There´s a compartment here that´s full o´dust."

Isolde (whispering to Mark): "My word, she is dense..."

Flayer Dungeon was pretty intense at time. Dark Shape bosses, FECELE Undead Flayer boss (!). Fun stuff.

I turned out to be more tired than I thought I would be. Luckily, the passage to the Flayer Jungle waypoint was empty, so this was a good time to stop. Next session, I will only need to re-kill that flayer shaman (and buddies) at the passage entrance. I feel slightly guilty about doing that (what´s your comment about this, WoL?!) but I can live with it if I promise I won´t pick up any of their drops.

I ended the session by running a very long way from the Great Marsh WP to a golden chest alcove farthest away in the GM, in order to kill a river hydra that didn´t want to show up for 15 minutes when I was here the first time. Full clear means full clear!

We have the same opinion about many things in D2, but apparently not about the river hydras. They are one of my favourite monster types.

  What's to like? They spit poison in your face, knock you back, and play peek-a-boo under water. And for whatever reason, you can stab them with a dagger, but a desert merc often can't reach them with his polearm!
Actually, I don't mind any of that. I simply dislike them because they don't drop anything. Cheap snakes... can't they belch out a ring once in a while? And why not a boss pack for some variety?

I do like those frog-type creatures. Especially when they're aura-enchanted, and you can see the aura floating on the water, so you know where to flush them out.

Yeah, some items would be nice. I wonder if you can turn one into a boss with the help of a Monster Shrine? Probably a bad thing to do, since you miss the drop.

I still haven´t created a boss Flying Scimitar, or seen a screenshot of one.

Apart from an aura giving them away, frog demons can be revealed with Cloak of Shadows. CoS works for spotting hydras, too. Otherwise, you need to come back from a TP or WP to see it (while it sinks down), if it´s in one of the 'stay hidden for a long time' periods.

Another weird thing about hydras is that you get the most XP from them if you kill the tail ends first. The tail ends collapse if you kill the head but then they won´t give anything. I have tested this. So once Isolde has destroyed a tail, I pull her over to the other side of the hydra...

Congrats on the Guardian WoL and good luck to everyone still plowing through

Jesus!!! My cheeks are red and my heart is pounding like a locomotive on drugs.. I have just closed Diablo after taking down the beast who gave name to this game.. I had some real close calls.. standing in his cage with him breathing his **** on me and my valkyrie desperately trying to distract him enough for me to get the hell out.. I don't think I have to mention that I used up all my full rejuvies on this guy.. all on me and all I have been saving up.. I also had to sell all my gems to keep up on repairs and health potions..

freaking 4 times I ended up in his cage.. 3 of these times I was close to dying.. phew.. but I am still here :) Bastid dropped me an Isenharts plate.. TY Diablo.. phfft..

Anyway.. I am still level 80 and I am in Harrogath now..

Sometimes this game can still surprise me, this time in a very unpleasant manner.

Progress was really nice in act 3, despite some extremely nasty Undead Soul Killer bosses in Swampy Pit (How about Stone Skin + LE + Fanaticism, or the real beastie: FE + LE + Extra Fast?!), very poisonous spider champs at the start of Disused Reliquary, and Extra Strong snakes in early Ruined Fane (the buggers killed Isolde).

Some nice finds: Jewel of Fervor in Lower Kurast, Sol, Amn and Dol runes later in the act.

Very easy Durance on the first two lewels. This is a great character for that place. My duo handled all four monster type with ease.

Time for the final floor. Had to deal with Fanaticism, both from a Blood Lord boss and Bremm Sprakfist. No problem, since Decrepify allowed us to keep the distance.

The usual CB gear against Mephisto. Buffed up cold resist with potions again. I have respect for the ice sphere. Here he comes. Decrepify applied. Now go in and slow him with the General´s Flail, then CB the crap out of him. Whoa! That´s some impressive lightning damage he dished out there! Full rejuve. Better close in so he doesn´t cast more. Just as Mark was on the verge of getting to him, he cast another lightning, and another! And...Mark died!

WTF!
(stares at death screen in disbelief)

If happened so quickly, I almost didn´t understand what had just taken place.
Too bad Decrepify doesn´t slow down spellcasting...

The death was partly my fault. I had totally forgotten that Mephisto uses lightning. I associate him more with cold (and poison to some extent). Mark was wearing Goblin Toe instead of the usual Amber boots of Acceleration. His lightning resistance was still 36%, not too awful. Mephisto brought down over 850 life with two lightning bursts within half a second. That´s just...
There must have been at least one critical hit involved, I think.

Mephisto got to score a kill. That can´t be common...

Oh well, adventuring with Isolde again has been a heck of a ride. What a major difference it makes that Attack and Throw wasn´t banned this time around, and I just LOVE the Inner Sight of the 'upgraded' 1.10 rogues.

I think I need a couple of days (maybe more than a week(!)) off from D2 now. Then I´ll work on my Gambler´s Delight assassin. Level 15 Lightning Sentry, Charged Bolt Sentry, Dragon Tail and Blade Shield. I wonder how that will turn out?

aww.. You were doing so great! Sorry to see you go.. RIP Isolde and Mark.. :(

Act 5.. sigh.. So filled with ranged enemies.. Managed to get to Schenk today and I also found the guys in Frigid.. Went into Areat Platau to see if I wanted to push forward to the wp.. Nuh uh.. filled with those cold sharman.. surrounded by tons of little helpers.. So I will go from Frigid next time and hopefully all the way down to the crystaline WP :)
