Years and years of playing, my best rune? A Mal from poking an urn in act 5 nm. Considering the amount of charcters I ran through hell in 1.09, I felt very cheated. Hopefully I'll have better luck in 1.10. 
Rune stories? Well, once upon a time there was a rune called El, and he had lots of identical brothers/sisters...
Highest rune I've found is Um (on Bnet, sadly) or Lum - both, unsurprisngly, from the Hellforge (NM and Hell respectively).
Back in 1.09 I got 2 Puls though. Amusingly, both with the same character - one from Hellforge (I think - memory's a bit hazy), other from standard monster-slaying in Act 5 Hell.

I have had quite some luck in finding runes. At the risk of being called a cheater, here´s what high-lvl runes I have obtained 
(Above Um):
1.09:
Ist: Traded from a very-trusted friend of mine.
Vex: Found during an Icy Cellar run. (Yes I ran SnapChip in 1.09).
Ohm: Cow-lvl
Sur: Cow-lvl
1.10:
Mal x2: Cubed using the new receipies.
Vex: Found from turning a rock in the Black Marsh in an MP game. :cheesy:
Sur: Found on the way to Andariel during an Andariel run.
The only runes I have used is the Ohm, (for a Chaos Scissors Suwayah), and a Vex, (For a Heart of the Oak flail).
I know that it may look weird that I have found both 2 vex and 2 Sur but that´s just coincidence. After the first Sur I would rather have a Jah or Ist drop, but that´s just me. Still thinking of cubing my two Sur´s into a Ber but haven´t decided yet. Oh, and by the way. These are NOT for trade.
Hope you guys believe me cause these finds are legit all the way. I wouldn´t gain ANYTHING by lying about something like THAT.

For me I've seen/picked alot of rune all in 1.10
Sur, Ohm, 2x Vex, Gul, Ist, 5x um after that pul, lem, Fal and Ko number is very big
My best runewords:
Bramble, Stone, Sanctury (all has been given away as I left :rant: )
story:
Sur: founded it in Flayer Dungeon lvl 2 as I was hunting for runs with my venomancer
Ohm: founded in pits with my fishymancer (MF)
Vex: droped in one of those WSK runs and was picked by Vorbiss, the other one droped in 1.10 beta and was deleted WRONGLY with my character :rant:
Gul: founded in WSK lvl 2 with my venomancer
Ist: from Hellforg
um: all from Hellforge, only one droped for me from a fallen near countess :lol:
that's it for now, I hope to have again much luck to find those runs again or better

Until very recently, the highest rune I've ever seen drop was a Dol... During a recent Andy run, I found an Um in a casket though.

The highest rune I've found was a 1.10 Ber Rune. I was horking the zombies in Pindle's garden on the way to the big man himself, and there it was. I immediately stopped playing and posted about it here as I recall...
Now I just need to decide what to do with it...

well, seriously, I guess the old timers here already know the story and the rest have heard it anyway so it's kinda pointless for me to share it here again. (Edit: but I did...again
)
I have two legitimately acquired Zod runes, one which was traded and later cubed from a Cham and other high end runes (enough to leave me with one Cham after that which was later traded to Lord_Vega who turned it into a Zod which was later donated to Durf).
That Zod became the centerpiece of my very first BotD which was built on an ethereal berserker axe, a simple 1.10 version. That Zod took me literally thousands of hours of gaming, starting from the very first day Diablo II was out to the very day I turned 26 (which was 14th december when my brother finally agreed to the rune trade, thus the easy to remember date). Now of course I know runes weren't there from the D-day of Diablo II, but the items were that I traded for it, or some of them anyway (others included a pack of tobacco, couple of cd's and stuff like that :lol: )
Anyway, I was quite happy with that BotD axe for a "long" time, meaning, it took about 3-5 weeks more and a Zod rune dropped during a Baal run I was doing. To this very day I still don't know what critter dropped it, all I do know is that everything was dead and I had cleared basically the whole floor from items before I even saw the rune there.
Now, before you all go berserk about the luck I had back then, think of it this way, it only took about 1-2 months more when I got so completely fed up with the whole game that I've stopped playing it entirely. It simply became too easy when I had the things I had wanted to achieve in the game, Zod and lvl99 (that I've done 4 times).
So...basically just play the game and have fun, enjoy the cracked dagger your lvl2 guy finds to replace your broken short sword before heading back to town and enjoy the more rare finds
