Shaft vs. Eth Arkaine on defiance merc?

I have a shaft and I'm thinking about trading for this 2100 defense arkaine's and I was wondering which would be better, end game vs. A5 hell for example. I'm not sure how defense and DR are applied so I was asking. Thanks

well im not an expert but i think the more def he has the less he actually gets hit. and with shaft, he might get hit more but take less dmg. just do a little testing to figure it out. take him to a place where hes surrounded and see he how long he lasts. a little trial and error is your solution.

With a Defiance merc, go with Eth Arkaines. The bonus from Defiance gets applied to the base armor, which would mean an Eth Balrog Skin, which would mean INSANE defense. I have a Glad Bane on a Defiance merc and he has around 8k defense. I'd imagine the Valor would put him above 10k. Just give him some leech and he'll be fine.

Also, the FHR and +skills will help a lot (depending on what patch it's from).
 
i dont know how long ago it was but i compared upgraded normal shaft vs eth x stone runeword with 2,8k def

it turned that the stonearmor with that def has a little more advantage over the shaft. basicly its like the first reply says. he gets more hits but not so hard.

when i compare 2,1k def with the little dam red on it vs upgraded shaft ~1,5 k def plus damage reduce% i bet the shaft is better and cheaper.

though arcaine has other advantages like the plus skills.

AR = Attack Rating of the attacker
DR = Defense Rating of the defender
Alvl = Level of the attacker
Dlvl = Level of the defender

Chance to Hit % = 100 x 9850 / (9850 + 2100) x 2 x 99 / (99 + 85)
Chance to Hit % = 100 x 9850 / 11950 x 2 x 99 / 184
Chance to Hit % = 87

Total damage = 100 [attacks] x 0.87 [Chance to Hit %] x 100 [damage per hit]
Total damage = 8700

2. You have DR = 600 from an average shaftstop and you are level Dlvl = 85. Baal has AR = 9850 and he is level Alvl = 99.

Chance to Hit % = 100 x AR / (AR + DR) x 2 x Alvl / (Alvl + Dlvl)
Chance to Hit % = 100 x 9850 / (9850 + 600) x 2 x 99 / (99 + 85)
Chance to Hit % = 100 x 9850 / 10450 x 2 x 99 / 184
Chance to Hit % = 95 (it’s 100 but the game has 95 cap)

Total damage = 100 [attacks] x 0.95 [Chance to Hit %] x 100 [damage per hit] x 0.7 [damage reduction per hit]
Total damage = 6650

Chance to Hit % = 60

Total damage = 100 [attacks] x 0.60 [Chance to Hit %] x 100 [damage per hit]
Total damage = 6000

For this test I used the toughest monster in the game = Baal in hell. Defiance aura from your merc or shout war cry could only override shaftstop.
 
Ah wow I see... that's a VERY good comparison. I can't believe the defiance aura gives such a relatively slight edge with the arkaine's compared to just a plain old shaft stop. Seems like I could just up my Shaft for cheaper + better. Thanks so much for the comparisons!

Chance to Hit % = 67.55

Total damage = 100 [attacks] x 0.6755 [Chance to Hit %] x 70[damage per hit]
Total damage = 4728.5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If only I could get an up'd eth shaft... yielding 4250 total dmg...

-Duress in Dusk shroud (15% Chance of Crushing Blow and 33% Chance of Open Wounds, +40% Faster Hit Recovery ,~ 1300 def)
-Gore rider (10% Chance Of Open Wounds, 15% Chance Of Crushing Blow and 15% Deadly Strike)
-Guillaume's Face with 14% all res jewel(+30% Faster Hit Recovery, 15% Deadly Strike and 35% Chance of Crushing Blow)
- Dracul's Grasp (25% Chance of Open Wounds,9% Life Stolen Per Hit and 5% Chance To Cast Level 10 Life Tap On Striking)
-Raven frost (+248 To Attack Rating and Cannot Be Frozen)
-Highlord's Wrath (1 To All Skill Levels,20% Increased Attack Speed and 33 % Deadly Strike)
-String of Ears (7% Life Stolen Per Hit, Damage Reduced By 15%)

total offense: 98% chance of Crushing blow, 68% Chance Of Open Wounds, 63% chance of deadly strike, 15% static field, 4 frames per attack (6.2 attacks per second), damage ~350 – 4500, excellent AR

total defense: all res 75%, physical resistance 50% (maxed), fast hit recovery over 86% which is 4 Hit Recovery Frames (0.16 sec to recover), Cannot Be Frozen, ~20000 def with merc aura when active, 22% Life Stolen Per Hit, 5% Chance To Cast Level 10 Life Tap On Striking

Imagine that you are attacked with 3 groups of hell lords (bosses with minions) at once. I think there is no way a single character could handle them solo especially if all 3 bosses are physically immune and have mana burn and curse. Except for this mighty Paladin. When he casts / triggers Lap Tap there is no way he can die. Try.

Btw: stormlash is the ultimate melee weapon for mass and single destruction. Much better then any BoTD.
