"Rare Pleasure" Tournament

My apologies to all: as stated in the original tourny rules, the Larzuk quest rewards can be saved until any difficulty. This is the one exception. I'd forgotten that tidbit, but I'm glad some of you didn't! I'd probably remember myself, if I hadn't died several weeks ago :flip:

As for having Anya stitch your name into your items... you're right: nobody cares! :)

Yowza! Excellent list! You get high marks for effort.
I don't trust myself to transcribe a list that long. I switched to the screenshots (to avoid occasional stat errors I've made in the past). Plus, I'm faster with screens than typing.

RalRal in your armor looks good. Nice boots too.
And the emerald in the lance was a great idea.

Yes, super descriptions jiansonz! The equipment list was very interesting. When I get some time I'll show my own. I am interested in how your LoM will fare against Hell Ancients. When I played a LoM I was never able to get past them. But judging by your tale so far, you've really got the hang of using them.

Yesterday I went to meet the Ancients myself, and they handed my hat back to me. I could barely scratch them before they sent me running to open a portal. Ursula was only clvl 60 at the time, so I will spend a while leveling up 5-10 more before I try again. My map has Bonesaw Breaker's glittery chest close to the Glacial Trail waypoint, with typically 2-3 boss packs in between. So that's a good place to do runs for experience and cash. I found a wand there yesterday with +2 Necromancer skills, 20% faster cast, and (IIRC) +1 Decrepify plus less interesting stuff. Sweet, but I sold it for the gambling money. I then gambled two more +2 barbarian skill clubs, but still nothing druidic!

More news after the weekend...

rarnonn killed the smith and andy. on his second run to andy, he ran into a room full of those guys that shoot lightning balls, and lost so much health that u could barely see his sliver of red health. didnt help that i tried and missed about 4 times pressing the full rejuv button. haha. luckily he survived. he also killed radement.

CrossCheck is now a conqueror....

She worked her way steadily through act V, first killing Shenk then rescuing some barbarian prisoners without any major surpises, or interesting finds. When she reached the frozen areas, she found stair traps at some of the stairs into the caverns, but the worst was entering the drifter cavern to find an extra-strong/CE archer pack and a might aura/cursed serpent mage pack at the door... ouch. That was a quick NDE. She put up a decoy and put the valk in the middle of the archer pack. Fortunately these monsters weren't that tough so their numbers were lowered quickly, and though the merc died, CrossCheck survived.

After rescuing Anya, she gave me a much worse item than she gave me in normal..... There was no excitement in killing Nihlitak, just a few explosions and he went down fairly easily. Onward to the ancients CrossCheck had a heck of a fight. She had to respawn them once, after a physical immune Talic just seemed too slow to kill. (could have eventually gotten him with MA, but it would have taken all night)

In the WSK one level was filled with flayers... why oh why did they put those in there... annoying as anything. Thousands of them...... but they were eventually destroyed. The throne room had gloams, minotaurs and OK's. fortunately Crosscheck doesn't have to worry about IM, so no great difficulty was had.

Finally, Baal was no problem, he dropped 5 rares and an ethereal darkglow, none of which was usefull....

So, Crosscheck will kill baal one more time, then the cow king for laughs, and it will be time for hell.... not looking forward to seeing her resists there. To that end, she started gambling rings. I also tried crafting a safety ring. It really turned out badly, so sold it. She did get one good one gambling, so now her gloves and ring slot 1 have been used up with gambles:

Chaos Coil
Ring
Required Level: 48
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 76
Fingerprint: 0x53e0244
+5 to Minimum Damage
Damage Reduced by 1
Fire Resist +26%
Lightning Resist +10%
Cold Resist +10%
Poison Resist +33%
33% Extra Gold from Monsters

Also, she gambled these boots earlier, but I am undecided whether to use them or not so she's been carrying them around but not wearing them. Comments anyone?

Raven Stalker
Chain Boots
Defense: 13
Durability: 16 of 16
Required Strength: 30
Required Level: 38
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 67
Fingerprint: 0xbce2f423
+9 to Dexterity
+27 to Maximum Stamina
+35% Enhanced Defense
Lightning Resist +40%
22% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
20% Faster Run/Walk

CrossCheck, lvl 72 Magezon, act V NM 117pts (I think)

Use them!!

Freddie has reached (and cleared) Lower Kurast. It has been very dangerous for him twice. On both occasions, I did some panic rejuve drinking.

* CE Gloam pack in Swampy Pit. Mages got slaughtered incredibly fast. Merc and golem held up well, and Corpse Explosion helped a bit. Since the boss had Stone Skin, Durga needed the poison Lance once again.
* CE melee flayer pack (boosted by Might from afar) in Flayer Dungeon. This one was worst, Freddie may have been down below 100 life at one instance.

Today, I though I should play a little. But I am also going to visit some friends today and after I´ve played just a little in Kurast Bazaar, I realized I won´t have time for it the Sewers and the two temples (I´d have missed the train if I had tried!). I had clearly not woken up yet, because I saved and exited and thereby, made two mistakes:

1. I had not picked up my town-stored gear!
2. There is nothing that says I must do the Sewers after the Bazaar, I can do it after Upper Kurast as well. There would have been time for Bazaar + temples.

The only extra gear that wasn´t lost were the gems, runes and the ethereal Colossus Voulge.

Freddie has taken a hit, but he isn´t floored. I´ll save up cash for a while now. Hellforge isn´t that far away, and if I find an Um, I´ll gamble a new Cruel weapon, dammit! I still hope for another ethereal elite but if I don´t find it before the Hellforge and I get an amethyst from it, I´ll imbue the CV and if it´s better than the crafted spear, I´ll gamble a 2-socketed armor.

Too bad about losing the Lance, but at least I am past ghost territory for a while.

I would equip those boots in a heartbeat. Use them!

For that reason, I don't trust myself with town storage (also I'm scared it might disappear). I rarely do it. When I have no other choice, I like to litter the ground with 20-30 small piles of gold, as a glittery reminder. It also helps that I never S&E from the field.

I am usually very disciplined with my storage, and I´ve had several characters that didn´t lose anything. Also, I visit town very often to sell stuff, so nothing disappears for that reason either. Most common reason I lose stuff on the ground is game crashes.

Well, CrossCheck has officially moved into hell. Nothing interesting from the Cow King, and not even a single rare from the second killing of Baal. For my imbue I tried a matriarchal bow, since I can't gamble a amazon bow I figured it would be a good imbue. Unfortunately it didn't turn out all that well, but about on par for damage with the Ceremonial Bow she is using now. I had though about rerolling it, till I stashed it in the cube, and remembered not enough skulls will fit...

Thanks for the replies on the boots, I was thinking maybe more resists could be had, but overall they are a nice package. I did equip them now, the lightning resist is too important in Hell. In fact, lightning is her only positive resist now.... ouch. She has a couple of item slots in need of improvement, there are no resists on the circlet or amulet she is wearing, maybe it's time for a second crafting attempt.

On entering Hell, Crosscheck quickly cleared the Den of Evil, then moved along to the cold plains. She found the way to the stony field quickly, so she continued on to the dark wood and rescued Cain. Now she will take on Blood Raven, before continuing towards the Monastery and Countess.

PS I guess it's my turn to update the table, I'll get back to it later.

Despite clearing all six temples, this was almost a dull session. I kid you not!

I had decided to keep some easy parts (parts of Sewers and the above-ground areas) "in reserve", so I could recruit an army from there. That way, if I had to retreat from a temple and the merc had died, I could come back to the temple with a full army, and with Thorns active. A good plan. (Like I said before, I don´t allow myself to recruit my army from areas that I´ve cleared before. That would feel like cheating.)

Only moments that were a little tense were the Kurast Causeway temples:

* Runied Fane had a bat boss pack above and to the right of the entrance, and 3 snakes coming in from below. I Dimmed them all and cast a golem in front of the snakes.
* Disused Reliqury placed Freddie in the middle of a beetle pack at the entrance. Snakes were coming in from below here as well. Thankfully, they were all regular critters. They died quickly to Thorns and CE.

Every rare elite spear/polearm is exciting to identify. Too bad they have all had something like +26% ED...

Best finds during the session were a Thul rune and Highlord´s Wrath unique Amulet (grail item).

im sad to announce you that my dear Fang has passed away.
Died to a boss pack of tainted in the catacombs .
as for my first HC char, i think i did pretty good.
RIP Fang, lvl 41 Amazon
dunno what was her score, but i doesnt matter no more.
good luck to all of the remaining contestants

good showing, phatbrava. Making a Destroyer on your first HC attempt is impressive.

Victor's having a lot of fun with Fanaticism lately. In my last few sessions, it seems like half the aura-enchanted bosses I encounter have Fanaticism. Most of the time it's not a huge problem, but it's cost me at least a million gold in extra merc resurrections.

It started with Sszark. Alone, he's bad enough. Boosted by a back-up boss pack with Fanat... things got ugly quick. Spiders swarmed around the golem, exposing the merc. Forget about it! Instant merc death. Even the golem went down quick, from poisoning and a severe beating. I was reduced to teasing out one or two spiders at a time. Sszark and the other boss were last in line. Sszark wasted Razan again in a one-on-one fight. Finally I got the golem to tank both spiders, and Razan earned his revenge.

I cleared a zombie-packed Great Marsh without trouble, and started the Flayer Jungle. CE took out the flayer packs, even as they scattered about. The long range even blasted the dart blowers hanging out on the sidelines. I kept Victor safe by standing near a few corpses. If any flayers attacked me (which happened often) I blasted 'em as they closed in.
At the end of one section of Flayer Jungle, I saw a dual-boss pack of Shamen/flayers trapped on an island formation. Their pathfinding caused them to spill out from around a bridge, catching my flank by surprise. They had extra strong and cold attacks, boosted by fanat. Merc died, Victor took a cold hit, and I'm crawling to get away. Two more hits, a rejuv, and finally a teleport to pull the golem back. They ignored the golem, stabbed me again, and I had to teleport across the river. Safe at last.

I got jumped again later by the Gibdinn pack. The map spawned the Gibdinn shrine on a tiny peninsula by itself. Usually the pack spawns off to the side and runs at you. This time, with limited space, the pack spawned around Victor. Heart attack! I squirmed out and teleported behind the golem/merc. Close call.
The Flayer Dungeon housed some powerful packs, but no NDEs. The Witch Doctor minions (FE Cursed Fanaticism) put up a good fight until CE took them out. Both Endugu "segments" dropped a pair of rares, two of which were elite armors (nothing good though).

Swampy Pit was the toughest yet, with Gloams, dolls, and mummies. Ouch. On level two the merc and golem rounded a corner, picked up a Conviction aura, and Razan disappeared. Just like that. I snuck a peek and located a LE Spectral Hit Conviction Gloam Pack. Dear God, I think I'll steer clear of that room. No thank you.
I pulled the golem's leash and luckily he pulled the boss with him. I resurrected Razan and got him to kill the boss before the other gloams came in. Phew!

Lower Kurast was a breeze, with weak monsters. Treasure rained in. Five uniques fell, including Blackhorn's Face and Thundergod's Vigor. My first T-God's, what an awesome belt! I also found a couple pairs of damage-boosting gloves. But what does Victor care about paltry greens and golds? Victor scorns second-hand crap. In search of more rares, I dove into the fearsome temples.

I entered Sarina's temple among a few spiders. No big deal. But then Sarina's pack stormed in ahead of schedule (yep, Fanaticism). There's no room to re-enter if I run out the door, so I teleported down one of the wings. Uh-oh... 3 wailing beasts in the end room. They picked up the Fanat aura when Sarina's pack closed in, and killed Razan. My poisoned Golem was fading fast. I TPed out, and re-entered through the main door. I teleported down the other hallway, which was clear. The golem blocked the doorway and we mopped them up.

All the remaining temples were tense, but the last one was the toughest. I rounded the corner of the entry room and ran into a dual pack of snakes (one boss had Fanat, of course). My formation was strong and the first three snakes were killed easily. For some reason Razan wandered deeper into the room and got killed trying to tank the Fanat boss (at least he scored a couple hits though). I exploded the three snake corpses which slivered the boss. The golem died and I was pushed back a little to the entry room. A new golem occupied them while I threw knives at the slivered boss. I almost had him. Then a lone minion came in around an alternate doorway towards the golem, suddenly changed his mind, and charged me. It scored four rapid hits knocking me back on each. I realized I was hitting F4 (instead of 4) trying to drink a rejuv. Two things saved my life:
1. The snake lost its Fanat aura as it pursued me, so the last hits were weaker.
2. The knockbacks sent me sprawling into the stairwell, which I used to duck out.
I had 60 life. Whoa! A new low for Victor. I went back in with Razan and the boss died quick. After that, piece of cake. I found Victor's third elite set item, Ondal's Almighty Spired Helm.

The Durance had plenty of scary sights, with FE dolls and such. I didn't risk any exposure to p5 doll death bursts. The open areas kept me pretty safe from that. Bremm had Fanaticism, but was the first to be lured out and killed alone, ending that threat before it started. Here's a screenshot of Victor using new toys against Mephisto. I used level 4 Ice Blasts from a rare ring (gambled), and cold arrows from this bow. Anything to help out. The bow has become Victor's preferred weapon on the switch. Cold arrows don't miss, and help keep Razan safe on occasion. It costs about 800 per charge, but p5 drops provide so much gold that I don't mind paying it.

Act 4 was cleared all the way the the CS easily, thanks to CE. Once Razan kills a few baby spawners, I set off a chain of CEs to kill everything. Same for the maggots/spawners in the River of Flame. It pays to be mindful of which corpses you CE, selecting mother corpses at key times to maximize damage.
At last, the Hellforge! Surprise! My first Ist! In my long D2 career, I've found Ber, Vex, and a couple Guls, but never a coveted Ist. It's not really too valuable unless you're a dedicated MF'er or twinker. I'd much rather have a Shael or Pul for the merc weapon, or an Um maybe. But I'm happy to find it nonetheless.

IM killed Razan eight times in the CS, but we got the job done. Lord de Seis (Fanat of course) killed Razan again, but thankfully switched auras (Holy Shock) when I returned. Much better. Hopefully that ended my Fanaticism curse.
Diablo had a grudge against Razan. He refused to stick to the golem. Razan could tank a Decrepified Diablo (with a little Life Tap) except for Firestorms. Firestorms wiped out Razan instantly. So whenever Big D conjured one (both arms raised with glowing hands), I teleported away to pull Razan with me. It was comically easy to detect, due to decrep + golem slowing.

I finished the socket quest of Act 5, and made some major final decisions with my gear. Failing to find an ethereal stygian pike or thresher, I imbued the eth Colossus Voulge; hoping for Cruel, IAS, or reduced requirements. I didn't get any of those, but I still got a great result. The increased damage is well worth the loss of some attack speed and life leech. I Heled the runes out of my armor, used the Hellforge PAmethyst, and gave Razan his new toy. He now does 631-3609 damage, before Amp.

I equipped Razan's armor, socketed it, and made this. I simply had to use that rune.
Other gear changes included these field-found scarabshell boots, made possible by a +18 Str rare demonide sash and a +19 Str rare ring. If I can get the resist scroll, my fire/cold resists will be maxed again (lightning is already maxed)

actually what pleases me the most is that it was untwinked and played unde these kinda steep rules.
but all in all it was fun

What I think you could have done here instead of throwing knives, is cast IM on the boss. One hit on the golem (or Victor) and the boss would have been dead. Then CE...

As for Ruined Temple, now that was intense. If that last escaping possibility had hosted a boss pack, then you´d have been in real trouble!

Very nice gear overall. I like Victor´s armor. Apart from those resists and MF, it has perfect 'of the Colossus'.

The boots are excellent. Well worth going out of the way to be able to equip them. They even have credible Defense...

Yep, that was an ideal time for IM, which only occured to me well after the battle ended. 80% of the times when IM would be helpful, it slips my mind. I use it so rarely, I can't remember to keep it in my rotation. One exception was the CS, where I used it to finish off several knights.
Another skill I under-use is Terror. I just don't like it. If I use it against monsters surrounding the merc, some of them head towards me. Also, it sometimes doesn't work at all against monsters attacking me, or heading my direction. Maybe 1 point isn't enough against Hell monsters. I much prefer Howl or Monster Flee.

I've been looking for an excuse to wear that armor. +60 life is attractive. And it has 400 defense. With the boots, Victors defense climbed to 732, which probably does more good than 6% blocking. I even upgraded the gloves (there's no shortage of rune drops at p5, might as well use them!).
One item I refuse to upgrade: the circlet. No male characters of mine will be wearing tiaras, if I can help it! :)

Good luck vs D Mordalles. I have always found him the hardest boss of the game.

Cross Check finished Act I today, defeating Andariel to move along to Lut Gholein on Warriv's caravan. She hasn't had much luck collecting any more decent rares, though a brandistock with 240% ED dropped (and an additional bonus vs Undead), so that, upgraded to a war fork, was given to the merc. She also found a cruel repeating crossbow... but magical not rare.

Hybridizing to freezing arrow was a good choice with the number of immunes. She does decent damage now (though on p1) and it is a large boost to her merc, keeping monsters still.

Her resists still suck, but that only is going to be a problem if she gets hit! :teeth: I hope to get a decent rare ammy soon, and crafting one is a definite option. It would be nice to improve her weapon too, so the next reflext/ceremonial bow she finds will get imbued in one last try to boost her damage output.

Freddie and his team mopped up the rest of act 3. Everything was easy, except Bremm Sparkfist´s pack. His aura was Conviction and one of his extra abilities was Cursed! Between the sparks, hits and lots of Hydras (Bremm has minions too, you know) my whole army got pwned. There were also two Blood Lord champs entering the fight. Somehow I managed to lure Bremm (and nothing else) far down in the first room, then escape up the stairs. With the help from Dim Vision (to remove the Hydra spamming) merc and golem could now slowly kill the council minions, while the two Blood Lords were still having fun. The Blood Lords also got slain without Bremm noticing us.

Freddie: "Heere, kitty, kitty, kitty..."
Bremm: "You insolent heretics! Bow down before the might of Zakarum!"
(*Amp*, golem in front of Bremm, *BLAM! BLAM! BLAM!*, dead Bremm).
Yep, the council minion corpses were neatly piled up here. :D

With help from the two Blood Lord corpses and the corpses from Bremm, Wyand, Maffer and a few more Blood Lords, Freddie pulled together an almost-full army. It had the important cold mages. I like it when my army is doing well.

The Hellforge drop will decide how I try to get my hands on a better merc weapon. Feels like it needs to be better for the last act.
