"Rare Pleasure" Tournament

If Diablo pulls off a Jailing, comes Charging and then decides to show Freddie his bad breath, it will become a question of exactly how fast I can punch rejuve buttons!

I've been able to TP out of D's bone prison before. I'm not sure if it works every time but I have used this for chars that can' teleport. Of course, then you have to run back in from the RoF, but that's no big deal.

Personally, I'd go for the firey spikes option.

Good luck! (I still find D the scariest Act Boss, with much scarier attacks than Baal)

Any ideas on:
- Which plan sounds best?
- Would you dare to take him on at /players 3?
- What do I do if Diablo jails Freddie?
I've played a LoM before (and would have in this tourney if you hadn't beaten me to it), and I don't recall jailing being a common occurence. What I do remember is the "ring of fire" smacks the mages down hard, so they probably wouldn't last more than one hit on /p3. My preferred technique was your 'Slow as Dirt', with bone spear as the primary damage source.
What have happened to the code thingy?
To keep things managable and readable, perhaps we should only update the code table whenever we complete a difficulty level or die. You would then just find the most recent post with the table in it, and reply with your stats changed. I think that was skunkbelly's original intent. People should still post their brief updates, though.

My brief update: midway through act2, I still haven't found any rares except for a few polearms. And those were so weak that I am using the Staff of Kings as my primary weapon...

Thanks, that´s very good to know. TP will be the first option I try if I get jailed.

I´ll just have to hope that at least one of them is lucky enough to find a safe spot, and that I will be able to keep Diablo occupied with golems, so he doesn´t move.

Bone Spear, huh? Too bad mine is soo crappy...

Hi Folks,

Glad to see everyone's having a good time, and progressing well.

For newcomers: it is too late to start, the deadline was May 1. But there will be a cool sequel to this tourney, so bide your time.

Also, probably the best thing, as a couple people have suggested, is to update your spot on the table only when you *must* according to the rules (upon completing Normal and NM, and then upon completing each act in Hell). That way, the thread doesn't get too bogged down with table after table.

Rare-Skunk fought his way to the Flayer Jungle last night, and found a rare ring (sort of crummy, but better than nothing). He has also found a couple of additional rare weapons, but all junk. I've been gambling boots like mad, without a single rare result (my current rare boots are ethereal, and only have 5 durability left). Current score: 25. Gambled items equipped so far: none.

The second day for the necro was much logner than the first, unfortunately not leaving much time for an update. A few significant events.

-Andariel fell very easily, it was just a matter of keeping a golem in her face.
-The Arcane Sanctuary is amazing with bone spear. I can't remember an untwinked character ever ripping through p8 monsters this early in the game like this.
-Duriel was more trouble than Andariel, but still not a big deal. I just filled up my inventory with mana potions, and alternated between clay golem and bone spear. It took a couple trips to town, but there was never much risk of dying.
-The Ruined Temple was a stair trap, but by then bone spear was at a high enough level that HCTornNecroI was able to force his way out without being in serious danger.
-Mephisto also fell easily, since he concentrated on the golem and bone spear and the mercenary knocked him out in no time at all.
-Hellforge dropped an Amn and a perfect topaz among other items, those two should be nice to socket at some point.
-Diablo was more trouble, since he destroyed my merc and golem in one shot. My resists also weren't great, so it was a matter of retreating, casting an occasional bone prison when he got close, and spamming bone spear. He fell eventually.
-Bloody foothill runs were very nice with the bunched up monsters, but missing out on Shenk's and Eldritch's experience and items after the first two runs was a letdown. Either way, HCTornNecroI gained a few levels, and ran his way to the Crystalline Passage WP, where he is now ready to rescue Anya.

Slots gambled at this point-
I'm trying to gamble my merc's weapon, but no one has been kind enough to give me a good rare pike. Gloves on the necro are gambled, but the rest (except for an amulet) is filled from drops.

Good rares:

Corruption Coil
Ring
+15 to Attack Rating
Cold Resist +19%
15% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
+1 to Light Radius
+1 to Mana After Each Kill
10% Chance to cast Level 3 Charged Bolt when struck

Carrion Touch
Demonhide Gloves
+1 to Dexterity
+10% Enhanced Defense
Fire Resist +20%
22% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
+1 to Light Radius
Half Freeze Duration
(these were found, and will be in use for runs with no possible lightning attacks on enemies)

Imp Fist
Heavy Gloves
+3 to Dexterity
+22% Enhanced Defense
Fire Resist +19%
Lightning Resist +26%
16% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
Half Freeze Duration
(these were gambled, and will be in use for questing)

The rest of my rares at this point are basically placeholders until something better drops or is gambled.

Points:
Level 31 - -31 pts
34 WPs including towns - +34 pts
23 quests completed (imbue and socketing is still left to be done, but the quest is done) - +46 pts

Total: 49 pts

P.S. - At what point will good +mana and +3 necro bone skills be available on gambled circlets and amulets?

well.. I just finished off diablo :D at level 22, which is a personal record (before today my lowest ever was level 23). However it took me forever, even clearing the entire chaos sanctuary was faster.. but the reward was nice, finally an amulet and a nice weapon with somewhat lower damage then I used to have but with mana leech.
I'll update later on today since I'll probably play some more tonight..
points so far: 21*2+31*1-22=51
I think I'll level to 25 orso before heading upto the ancients.... that's the plan :p

edit: some running later.. 2 quests and 3 wp's further :D 23*2+34*1-22=58

I don't think you can use Choking Gas Potions, can you... they aren't a rare, because if we can I would have used a ton by now, my barb hits like a flopping fish.

On to the update in narrative format... I never appreciated how good Leap Attack could work until I got to the Arcane Sanctuary. I was able to just avoid most of everything in there and hit the chests before leaping straight onto the Summoner... boy that made for a fast fight. Duriel was a pain in the rear. It took quite a few merc revives before I figured out how to fight him. Kept forgetting to cast Battle Cry. Thankfully gambled a rare pike for my merc with LL on it so he hits well now.

Technically, the rules state that potions of all types are permitted. So I suppose throwing potions is permissible...

HOWEVER, that said, I consider it extremely cheesy, and would recommend that you don't use them. If I'd remembered that the things existed when I wrote the rules, I would have banned them.

(3 Tree skills are not available on rares)

Gambling alvl is set at clvl +6/-3 so once you hit 31 you can start rolling for +61-90 mana. Lvl 34 for +2 tree and 84 :uhhuh: for +2 Class.

First off, I want to give my condolances to those who have fallen in the pursuit of a madman's goals.

I had to actually gain a level to even get to Mephisto. I was lucky enough to have a WP that was relatively closs to the stairs down to Durance three, but I had to keep trying over and over again because my prisons were just not strong enough to stand up against mephy. Once I hit 26 I decided that it would be in my best interest to get a cold Iron Wolf just for the slow down until I can get myself a holy freeze merc. MY rogue was nice and her FA did some good damage, but like all rogues without a solid tank, she just spent so much time repositioning herself that she'd never attack. Irov Wolves, however, will attack even if their surrounded. They are also less dependant on gear than the other mercs, which is always a bonus. Once I had the cold merc, I was able to easily keep a chilled, decrepped Meph completely occupied with bone prisons and he never got a shot off while I tore him down with a hail of bone spears. He had a drop that brough a tear to my eyes. 5 rares, 1 unique. All the equippable rares were eminently useful. I also had the divine luck to have this drop as I was leveling from 24 to 26.

Empyrian Brand
Bone Wand
One-Hand Damage: 3 to 7
Durability: 15 of 15
Required Level: 24
Staff Class - Fast Attack Speed
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 27

+14 to Energy
Poison Resist +35%
+12 poison damage over 3 seconds
+1 to Bone Spear (Necromancer Only)
+1 to Confuse (Necromancer Only)
+2 to Decrepify (Necromancer Only)
150% Damage to Undead
+1 to Poison and Bone Skills (Necromancer Only)
10% Chance to cast Level 4 Fire Bolt on attack

It saved my from dropping points in Decrep and is invaluable for my guy.

I spent some more (read a fortune) of my money gambling, but haven't found anything yet worth equipping.

Right, of course, completely forgot about that. In that case, +2 tree will have be the likely course of action, since level 84 is too high in a tournament, let alone one in which being a low level is a plus.

When rolling with 6 perfect skulls, what level is used for the item? Is it based on the character, or the item itself, and what modifiers does it involve? Sorry for all the questions, but I am a bit clueless on some of the more technical aspects of this game.

I can't remember the exact formula, but it uses the item level, and the re-rolled item is created with a lower item level (unlike the recipe for re-rolling blue items, which keeps the level constant).

I looked around a bit on purediablo.com. This what I found -

The new formula is Ilvl + Clvl x .4 = new Ilvl.

The Ilvl will always drop somewhat, and stabilize at 67.5% (roughly) of your Clvl after 5 trials.

It's no longer possible to get +2 skills on an amulet using this recipe!

So, around level 50 for +2 tree amulets, or you can go a bit lower with an item at a high enough Ilvl if you want to get a new rare amulet every couple rerolls. With 6 perfect skulls per roll, I don't see too many great items coming out of this tournament from this method.

I have been saving every chipped skull, flawless, whatever and cubing them, I think I have 2 perfect, 1 flawless and assorted lower ones. Unless you run cows endlessly or find tons of gem shrines, I also dont think that more than 2 or 3 rerolls will happen for anyone.

I've started in NM, very easy as now I have gone to p1 permanently. I might do some rakinshu runs for fun/items, but I'm doing pretty good with what I have now
Can I use runes from countess runs for up'ing my rares?

skoolbus said:

Half the stick-your-finger-in-your-eye fun of this tourney is the difficulty of finding good items, but if we can't upgrade with the runes we find (or craft with them) outside of forge/barbs...

I'll sick the squid on yea.

Edit: Deeds, bah!

Well, take my two cents with a bit o' salt n blood then :D

Apparently I should've waited on B/O with duriel. I was in the business of making town trips and and jumping back down the hole, but... well with just armor and a voulge... def was a nasty issue.

Anyway, i have school to attend too, now wasn't the best time to sign up for a tourney (but the idea was too crazy too pass up, props to the notion!)

Best of luck you masochists! Cheers,

Radagast, the man of many deeds :teeth:

Well, Plak has defeted the Cow King on normal.

A quick walktrough:

Act 1:
Plak walked outside of camp and immediately followed the road to the Den of Evil. Killing all monsters was necesary(sp?), otherwise Plak wouldn't have done it. He was level 3 when he came out, victorious of his first quest and heading towards the first WP. Coldcrow didn't gave alot of trouble, might is strong at the lower levels.
When Plak got to the underground passage level he did what he would do alot in his life.. he ran. Alot.. Plak ran all the way without killing any monsters untill he rescued Decard Cain and had to kill the Countess for another quest. Being lower level was annoying but in the tower no real challanges arised. It was the Smith that gave Plak his first NDE. Not remembering you have to be 9 years old to pick up the malus Plak ran towards the rack but then stood still for a few seconds in doubt while saying ''impossible'' for a few times.. the Smith snook up on him and Plak had to slam down 4 potions to run away. He aged upto 9 killing Treehead Woodfist over and over again hoping for some rares. It worked, some rares dropped and even a 30% MF Nagelring (!.. ).
After he was 9 years old, nothing could hold him back in Act 1. Andariel fell and she dropped him a nice throwing axe which he promptly used to finish off Radament.

Act 2:
Radament was hiding in the sewers. To find him Plak had to run alot, not only trying to find him but also trying to steer clear of any combat. When he got to Radament, he ran into the room, dropped a town portal but instead of taking it he walked back luring all the skelletons away with him. He ran all the way back to the WP so that he could take the TP from the other side facing Radament alone. Not entirely alone.. Azrael helped Plak out, Azrael is a desert mercenary. Likes long walks on the beach, has a sharp eye and enjoys everything you give to him. Sadly enough Azrael was only level 9 so his Blessed Aim aura didn't show yet.
Plak ran all the way to the Far oasis. Grabbing the cube along the way he noticed the one thing that had bothered him the most.. no level means no stamina. Getting to the Maggot Lair Plak had to kill alot of creatures, sadly enough. However this is where Azrael shined and only few trips to town were needed. The amulet gave little trouble and even the levitating platforms owned by the summoner posed no real threat.. as long as Plak and Azrael stayed together.
Thinking I needed to get to age 12 to face Duriel with some confidence I stayed in the Canyon of the Magi a while and fought my way trough the tomb. Duriel actually was quite nice. Slurping down alot of yellow potions before the fight really helped and the big worm dropped the gloves that I'm still wearing today (IIRC.. lol).

Act 3:
Yes.. some more running. I didn't do quest 1, knowing that when I left it I would certainly get it later on. I ran all the way trough the Travincal. Briefly stopping at all the WP's was necesarry and actually quite tedious since not only the great march was way off (spider turned into flayer) but I got swarmed alot. The flayers weren't too dangerous but the Shamans could drain Plak or Azrael dry in no time. I aged up to 18 to get Holy Freeze and Vigor. My god did I ever thank myself for Vigor. Never did I use it so intensely as these days.
Offcourse the sewers let me run all the way round before showing me level 2, but .. murphy's law. The travincal was pretty dangerous, not only because of the High Council, but also because those dead mages could summon meteors there. Getting one of those on your head hurt alot, actually one smashing the ground next to you hurt alot too. With my head high I ran all the way trough to the Durance of Hate level 3 and there I figured it would be best to finish off the guys I had to pass to get to Mephisto. Good idea, but dangerous too.. luckily there weren't any bosspacks around, even though I had to ditch an extra fast pack of dolls on level 2. Mephisto was actually quite easy compared to the running away I had done facing his council. Glurping red potions saved my ass but I didn't have to use any TP's.

Act 4:
... you guessed it, running alot. I actually lured Izual to the stairs leading to the City of the Damned. There he had no backup and I could face him two on one. A pile of gold was the reward.. but also two desired skills. I had aged to 20 orso by that time so the monsters were getting a bit tedious. Running to the River of Flame WP and the Hell Forge took me a couple of rerolls to get rid of the frenzy taurs. Eventually I managed to kill Hephasto and slam Mephisto's Soulstone. The drop was pretty good, a Thul, Prefect Ruby and some other stuff.
The Chaos Sanctuary was real chaos. I had no choice there but to finish off the monsters inside. It started on the River of Flame where some dumb eggs exploded into a pathwide flock of little bugs which I had to kill to be able to pass, but with alot of patience and running back because of IM or hideous monster combinations I cleared the place. Azrael had left my side for numerous times now and he hadn't gained alot of experience, however going back to age him would mean more experience for Plak too.. so that was out of the question.
Plak was 22 now and ready for Diablo. With an inventory filled with potions and TP's he got ready to kill the lizard. A bit too soon I'd say if I look back on it but the fight was actually quite exillirating. Especially one time when I ran upto Diablo, he hit me with his frosty hand, followed by a lightning blast which I somewhat dodged by running around him (note I hadn't attacked him yet but was allready down to 1/3 of my life) but then followed by an undodgable ring of fire leaving me with 10 hp and off to my portal again. He died with glare though after a long fight where Azrael's BA really helped out the times he stayed alive.

Act 5:
Well.. I better run I guess. Running trough the foothills wasn't too hard, killing Shenk was neither. I finally got to the point of diminishing returns, I could kill stuff without getting alot of experience. I had to look a couple of times to find all the prisoners, but freed them without alot of hassle, and then I ran all the way to the Frozen River. There I figured I had to face Frozenstein (in front of Anya) anyway so I better clear the entire way so I had a place to run back to. Boy was I right about that one, the yeti's had an irritating stunning attack which hurt a bit too. I didn't gain a year though.
Anya was thankfull, and pointed me to face an angry Necromancer. Nihlathak was found after some running (patern?) and Plak just lured away all his friends before fighting him so he couldn't cast CE. The arctic blast was quite irritating, but not deadly.
Next stop were the ancients. Still by the age of 22 I feared them more then I had Diablo. I ran to the Arreat Summit and looked the the three statues. Knowing they wouldn't spawn with alot of bad mods in normal I engaged them. Sadly enough when I was fighting Korlik I saw Azrael walk to the after life again and when I realised I didn't bring enough potions to continue I casted a TP. Next I did something I now regret. I aged to 24 to get Holy Shield before facing the Ancients again. The fight with the Ancients after was actually unbelievably easy. Madawc was standing away a bit but he didn't hurt actually, Plak was fighting Korlic so that he couldn't use his Leap Attack. Talic was whirling trough at given times and he was the only one that was actually threatening Plak. When he wirled trough and hit more then twice it was getting dangerous (if he didn't hit often a potion did the trick). Azrael was standing on the opposite site of Korlic and strangely enough he was perfectly safe there. After Korlic died, we hunted Talic down and even though Azrael fell on the floor during that fight Talic was in no condition to continue either, which left Madawc.. the wuss. He ran more then I did untill he eventually blocked himself by running upto the altar in the center of the place so I could blow him away.
Running trough to the World Stone Keep WP was not hard, the Ancients aged me to 25 and I was perfectly safe while being on the move. Next stop.. Baal's Minions. Feared, but not alot. The first wave was annoying as was the second, but only due to Baal who decrepified Plak every oppertunity he got. The third and fourth wave were lured more to the back where they were ''off'd'' quite easily. With Lister's pack hell broke loose. For some reason the game thought it would be amusing if those hell beasts were extra fast. Even while being chilled by Holy Freeze Plak couldn't ditch them. He turned and faced them just outside the chamber... Azrael looked at the floor in no time and Plak had no choice but to run away a bit trying to brake free.. eventually I ended up running up the stairs again realising that if I went back down there I ended up as my trusty mercenary. Sad but with vengeance gleaming in his eye Plak picked another time of the day to face Listers pack (sadly the extra fighting also made me age to 27) and this time Lister was fooled by Plak's speed only to be left with empty hands.
Plak ran back to the Throne seeing Baal escape trough the portal behind the throne. Remembering the fight with Diablo Plak prepared with alot of potions and TP's before facing the Demon. As Plak ran upto Baal he got knocked back by a blast of ice, which made him realise that this was going to be a tedious fight again. However while Baal might be stronger then Diablo his close combat was far less dangerous. Gulping down a red every now and then kept Plak alive. Sadly enough the very second Baal cloned himself the throne got too dangerous to stick around .. I stayed the first time thinking no harm by the two twins, big mistake that was. Two cold ploughs and a mana drainer left me motionless with half my hp but also facing two brutes by myself. So, every time Baal summoned his brother a visite was payed to Malah restocking supplies. Baal dropped two rares, two weapons, both weapons really good and one is now in used by Plak and the other will be by Azrael.

Cow level:
Well, as soon as I killed Baal I made an atma dump from my stuff and got behind my sisters pc to write all this stuff.. only to realise I wasn't done yet. Revamping Plak in normal mode was amusing. Running trough Tristram ignoring the monsters reminded me of the first time I ran trough Tristram. Also ignoring the monsters.. but then for other reasons
Luckily the red portal spawned right next to the King's hideout, so I didn't have to look far. The cows were not harming Plak or Azrael now, the cowking was somewhat dangerous because of his lightning but evetually he fell. He dropped a rare shield, but it was worthless opposing to what Plak was wearing. I finished up and will adventure once more in Normal before I will move onto Nightmare. I still have an Imbue, a Naming and a Socketing Quest waiting for me.

So there you have it, Plak finished Normal difficulty at level 27. Along with him his trusty sidekick Azrael who had a real hard time, but will hopefully level some in the near future so he can wear his shiny new staff (he's now level 21).
You can see my gear and stats right here.
As you can see my gloves are some sweet stuff, as is my weapon.. I haven't tried it yet but it will be cool.

Freezydin has defeated duriel and is ready to start act 3.

i breezed through pretty quick because i had it on players 1.
duriel was a difficult monster to kill though.

the only differance in my equipment is that i replaced my 2-7 damage scimitar with a 11-27 damage broadsword.

Death -thy name is Duriel

Well, once again I've lived up to my name: Quickdeath.

Fenris the Rabid Fury WW was at clvl 24 whne he tackled Duriel at P5 (my first mistake.) He was struggling mightily, going back & forth to town. I took my eye off the main screen for a second to check which summons were still alive and Duriel must have lunged mightily. I heard that terrible cry and my eyes returned to the screen to see that Fenris was gone - killed by the gruesome slug.

Fenris had 18 WPs and 11 quests, so I finished with 16 pts. Oh well.

Only one unusual thing to report about Fenris' quest. At one point, Fenris kicked a jar and three rare items appeared - chain mail, spiked shield and a Wolf Head. What a great jar that was for a druid in this tourney. I'm not sure I've ever seen three rares from a jar.

A fun tourney - good luck to all the survivors!

RIP Fenris! Duriel is such a PITA. I'm not looking forward to that battle either...

CrossCheck killed Andy one more time, and got a pair of rare gloves and a rare longbow from her. I switched from the light crossbow to the longbow because of the speed and it also does more damage. She then did some work in Act II, collecting the staff of kings from the Maggot Lair and getting as far as the lost city WP. In the process she also reached lvl 23. She should be 25 by the time she reached Duriel. Kinda funny when you look at posts like Sint's where they finished act 1 by level 27...

At this point neither CrossCheck nor her merc have an armour. That godness I didn't try a melee char at least at range not to much is whacking on her.

Quests: 7, WP 15, level 23, score 6
Good luck to all!
