Random musings:
When I made Belbarak, I thought that Aldur’s set was getting in the way of a very good, if not great, build. I also thought that going hybrid Maul/Fire Claw was doing the same. So I decided to give the build another try, and I found out that in many ways, they were.
There is one fairly large elephant in the room when comparing Other_Barry to Belbarak, and that is the raw damage done, according to the LCS. Belbarak’s Maul damage was stated to be 1410 – 2244 and 1863 – 2990 when fully charged, while Other_Barry’s was 873 – 1008 and 1427 – 1622 fully charged with Fanaticism and HotW! Yes, the Grief was lightning fast in comparison to a triple Shaeled upper Aldur’s Rhythm, but I find it hard to believe that it did less raw damage.
I played the whole game on /players8 and had only three deaths, all in Act 2 Hell and all to the Scarab Beetle things. All three of these deaths were really weird. At the time, I had more than 3.2k hit points and 85% lightning resist, but when attacking these annoying bugs, the area around the character seemed to go white as if there were dozens of balls of lightning around me and I was dead before I could even hit a potion. It was like I was back in the 1.09 days again, and I was up against a dreaded MSLE beastie.
Playing on /players8 the whole time meant that I had to change the style of play that I had planned. I'd initially thought I could get away with just the Merc, Grizzly, and the HotW, supplemented by the occasional Shock Wave to keep everybody safe. Still, as I played through the early parts of Hell difficulty, I realised this approach wouldn't work. When I added wolves and Ravens to the mix and supported them with a lot more Shock Waves the game play became easier and allowed me to stay on /players8. Not that it was a piece of cake, I had to work harder than I normally like to in order to finish the character, but I got sick of saying “I could have finished on a higher players setting, but I ran out of patience.”
Why did I go for the Barb merc instead of a Town Guard? I don’t know, but I thought that the Fanaticism aura might have been more use to my Grizzly than even a Might aura and it helped me to reach the fastest attack speed as well. I did miss the extra Decrep procs, though, so swings and roundabouts, I guess.
