Patriarch Malustar - melee necro

Patriarch Malustar

I looked for a char that will make a good team with a strafezon and necromancer seemed like a good idea, since I already have the 3 cookie cutters I decided it's time to make the 4th necro type: a meleemancer

It took us (me & Face) about 2 months to finish those chars so I don’t remember exactly what happened during the early stages. We struggled a bit until level 24 but from then on it was down to: amp-->strafe & few sword swings-->strafe-->next group.
Normal, NM and most of Hell were quite easy but in the last act the troubles began…
It started with an annoying combination of siege beasts, imps and blunderbores that slowed us down considerably, then the Frozen River with a nice combination of gloams and witches that kept pushing us back whenever we engaged them, Glacial Trail was filled with frenzytaurs packs that almost bankrupted me with constant merc revival and finally the most scary moment in the game: fanatic frenzytaurs near the entrance to Crystalline passage. Neither I nor Face had a chance to see his mods because we were too busy trying to kill them before they reach us…definitely not something that I would like to face again in the near future.

I was quite surprised how well the char preformed in the game. Good crowd control, relatively fast killing speed and very good safety made him one of the best chars I have played lately. The AR problem was partly solved by using lightsabre with its ITD mod and by using a rouge merc (inner sight). I could use act2 merc for more damage but I figured that with amplify and one of the golems on my side I can use the rouge instead. Riphook and
Blackhorn's Face made her into mini HF merc, which turned out to be quite handy when I tested him alone.

It was hard decision on the armor slot; I could use the simple old treachery armor with all its bonuses that quite fit for this build, on the other hand it was a perfect opportunity to use 'bone' armor especially when it seemed like a perfect armor for this build…eventually I chose 'bone' and it worked even better than I thought. The bone armor (fully synergized) was such a good defense that I rarely used life pots during the game and with '15% CtC bone armor' it even recast itself alone from time to time.

In conclusion, very fun char and highly recommended one too.

Thanks for reading

Re: Patriarch Malustar - melee necro

Very cool, I love to see non-traditional builds like this. I think the Bone Armor was a good choice, although treachery is a tough one to pass up, of course a Fort would have been nice also, as one of very few options for ED on a necro. But the Bone is a very nice armor, and not very useful for most other builds, so its always nice to use something different when you get a chance. Gratz!

Re: Patriarch Malustar - melee necro

Grats on the Pat! I think an interesting alternative weapon would be Oath, with its CtC Bone Spirit. There are a few Pat threads like that floating around, if you're interested.

Re: Patriarch Malustar - melee necro

mir, that is AWESOME. I love not only seeing an awesome non-cookie build, but also one that uses realistic gear. You have in fact inspired me to make one of my own, which I will start this afternoon. Did you ever have twinking gear planned out for him, or maybe a "dream gear" build that you would like to have seen on him? Not BOTD dream, but realistic high-end gear?

Also, isnt there a Poison Dagger bug where if you cast poison dagger when switch weapons, you still get the AR bonus from dagger? I'm not sure if its still in 1.13 or if I'm thinking of the right thing, but did you ever feel you could've used that?

Re: Patriarch Malustar - melee necro

Congrats on the Pat. Bonus cool points for making a meleemancer. Is the character's name supposed to sound like molester?

Re: Patriarch Malustar - melee necro

Impressive character and tons of style points! How did he fare against bosses?

Re: Patriarch Malustar - melee necro

Thanks all

@ kestegs & Arkado

I'm playing vanilla so those runewords are unavailable for me, otherwise I would've used something much better then lightsabre like grief or oath

I heard about this bug long ago and, until you mentioned it, totally forgot about it. When I play him next time I will try this bug although I think they fixed it.
Regarding equipment, I didn't exactly planned his twinking gear because most of it can be used when you reach level 50 (if you have patience you can reach it before NM even) so I just grabbed the best rares/unique I had while equipping the planned gear when I reached the level requirements. I did planned hid end-game equipment so I will get the fastest attack speed, fastest block rate, high FHR and max resists, there are only 2 things I would like to improve: the damage and getting some source of 'deadly strike' ("dream gear"). Both things can be reached quite easily by using treachery instead of bone, mara instead of the rare amulet and some other weapon instead of lightsabre.

Good luck with your meleemancer:thumbsup:

Maybe. I took the name from one of the demon heroes in HoMM4 so maybe the developers wanted it to sound like molester…:whistling:

I never fought against act bosses alone with this build but I don’t think it will be too hard. The rouge will slow them down to 50% and with decrepify on top of it, it should be easy (although quite boring with only 700 damage).
