Re: OT: What are you listening to right now
Venetian Snares - Koonut-Kaliffee
I think I've listened to his music for four years now, and it just keeps evolving.
Because of this post, I decided to give Venetian Snares a second chance. I had acquired a few of their albums, but only really listened to a handful of songs. After a second listen, I'm finding more and more things I can enjoy about them... but I still think the music's got too much self-indulgence from the artist. Too many way-out-there time signatures in 80% of the songs, and it's basically impossible to keep the rhythm consistently. They've got a good sound, the super fast glitch and stutter makes me shake in my seat, but it's just too crazy and unpredictable. I'm not really a fan of math rock, either; I don't want to have to listen to a song twenty times to be able to follow it. I like crazy, I like different, I hate the same exact groove for six minutes... but I can't enjoy a song if I'm lost and confused most of the time.
Fat of the Land, though... classic. THAT I can follow. :whistling:
My stuff:
Dieselboy - Substance D
2562 - Aerial
Fabriclive 40 by Noisia
Mitch Hedberg - Do You Believe in Gosh?
edit: @ FastE: are you looking for just new-ish new dnb? The Dieselboy album above is decent as is that Noisia album, and the AK1200 album from 2007 isn't half bad, either. If you can find the Romance Explosion EP from Limewax, that's not a bad set of four songs. (I can help if you're coming up empty) But I'm struggling a bit to find new dnb I like, too. I've gotten a few albums lately that I've only listened to once or twice, so I'll be sure to give them another chance really soon. But because of my failure for locating entertaining stuff in the genre, I've been reaching out a bit to tech house and dubstep. All I gotta say is stay the heck away from the new Goldie release; it's absolute rubbish.
Oh, and if you're a fan of the Justice/Digitalism/MSTRKRFT trend of electro house, you can check out the Bloody Beetroots. Good stuff. And if you can find edIT's Certified Airraid Material, the first half of that album can rock your head; it's crunked-out glitch-hop, which sounds weird but it drops awesomely.
