OT: titan quest

Did anyone pick this up? I'm going to today most likely even though my pc aint in a state of functionality. Something to run thru and give me my "newness" fix.

If I ever get around to upgrading my PC, I will probably pick this game up.

Right now I'm still using a VooDoo 3 graphics card which I'm pretty sure dosn't stand a chance.

I'm curious to know what the other forumites might think about this one as well. It's probably the most promising-looking DII clone that I've seen, but the reviews seem kind of mixed.

I've played the demo and will be playing the game.

From what I have seen so far its really an up dated Diablo2. Game play is very similar but the graphics are far superior.

Aside from the setting (Ancient Greece, Eygpt and China). The character system is perhaps the most interesting. There are only two characters (male or female) and you select at level 2 a Mastery (read skill tree) from one of eight and then a second Mastery at level 8.

Each tree (has I think 20 skills available at different levels of Mastery) and you can put points into some or all skills. There are pre-reqs for some skills but its not like D2 here if you want a level 30 skill you sometimes have totake the whole tree.

When you level up you get points to spend on skills - either raising mastery (making higher level skills available) or individual skill levels. You don't have to spend points in a 2nd mastery if you don't want to and you can split the points as you likes.

You also get stat points to spend increasing your str, dex etc

So it looks like there are a lot of options for character types.

Whether the game will/can have the sheer depth of D2 I doubt. Whether it might become as complex with expansions (like D2 LOD) also remains to be seen. But if like me you fancy a D2 break for a while its probably worth checking out.

I didn't read anything about it, but I played the demo and liked it. I went the typical warrior route and bashed everything. I agree though, i dunno about replayability. Once you've tried the different branches, there may not be much interest left.

Had to send my mobo I ordered back DOA and they apparently don't stock the same thing anymore, so waiting on this to arrive and I can put my pc back together.

I tried the demo and I'm not impressed. It might be because of that all text in the game and menus was exchanged by "sub not found" or something. I did not manage to change the graphics because of said problem and the default wasn't very good anyway.

Overall I got the feeling that's there's nothing new about this game. A classic hack n' slash with decent graphics, looks and feels like it could've been released four years ago. "Nothing is new, everything is... old". It might be worth playing through but does definitely not appeal to me.

no appeal for me either
shiny weapon and a lot of grass. i need to pick monsters one by one.low stash size and no ATMA incorporated. i think that i'll play D2 until death.

I've been playing it since it's release and like it. That said, I'm very tired of D2 and haven't picked it up in 2-3 months after playing it for 4-5 years). The comments above by Day are fair. There is a great loot system and some other factors that are an upgrade over D2, but there is nothing vastly ground-breaking. It has come out a bit buggy and some people have struggled to get it to work well (I've been ok with some graphics issues). A patch should be out today that will hopefully fix this stuff. I definately think it is worth the buy and hope to be playing it for a long time, or at least until D3 comes out.

nebux - before the release, the developers were very active and accessable in the TQ forums and have acknowledged that SP transfer is an issue. That may be addressed in a patch as well, although I don't know if it will be addressed in today's patch.

A couple of comments. First, make sure you have relatively modern equipment before making this purchase. I knew what I was getting into from the demo, but I'm still looking at a video card upgrade before I really get my money's worth.
Secondly, despite some technical problems, this game really does some things right. The dual-class system makes you really feel like your building your own class. When I made my Stormcaller-Nature Mage character and found out the new combined class was now called a Druid, there was a definite cool factor, since that was just what I was going for.
Above all, this game captures what I think a lot of us on this board in particular find exciting about D2. When you find a new item class, set item or epic item, you really get excited to see your new toy. I've never gotten over that feeling in D2, and TQ has it in spades.

@nebux: note that d2 doesn't incorporate ATMA either :) One could hope that the TQ devs' openness to modification will allow this to be fixed quickly.

I'm in a queue to DL the demo of File Planet now (sadly I wasn't too surprised to see the full game elsewhere too while searching for a way to avoid the queue). The minimum requirements look slightly worrying too, but apart from my CPU I meet the recommended requirements, so it should run alright hopefully.

If it is any good I might have to get it, D2 can only last so long:cry:

I just played the demo and thought it was good, but not brilliant. And it was really similar to D2. The main things I didn't like were having to look into the corner for the map, and not having anywhere to keep items, except on your character, unless I've missed something.

Wonder what it's like MP, and what the average mental age of player is?

Also, I read that characters aren't stored server side for MP. This looks like an invitation for dodgy items, so I might leave it a while before buying, if I do:sad2:

Not really sure about anti-cheat measures for MP. I wouldn't play it online any more than I do D2.
There's no stash per se, but as you progress through the game you acquire bags which serve as extra storage space, and manifest themselves as tabs in your inventory screen.
The map thing is definitely true, but consider: With a less-geometrical game world than Diablo, it would be difficult to convey the information from the mini map in a way that could be overlaid unobtrusively on the game screen. You almost have to have a full-color map for outdoor areas.

I really don't mean to become the apologist for this game. I'm not running out and getting a TQ tattoo or anything  I just think it's a little too easy to dismiss it as a Diablo clone, which is roughly like dismissing every FPS as a Doom clone. When a game defines or redefines a genre, it's hard to stay out of its shadow, and actually quite easy to make a bad game by trying too hard to avoid the known conventions.

I advice anyone considering the purchase of titan quest, to have a look arounds message board of the game about the instability of the game with some video cards and settings.

I tried it on my computer, won't list stats but did run game smoothly.

But for me every 5-45 minutes game just crash and at some point caracters gets easily corrupted and unplayable afterward.
Otherwise game is hella nice, waiting for a fix from creators to keep leveling my pyromancer.

Another slight drawback for me, maps are ALWAYS the same and chest are ALWAYS at same spot, so are the boss. Makes ''mf'' easy but kills a bit of replayability in my opinion.

Isn't there supposed to be a level editor for the game kinda like NWN for people to run their own adventures?

Yes - I comes with what is supposed to be a powerful level editor. Some early returns are that it is a bit difficult to get used to. Also, since the game is so new, I thing more people are playing it than trying to build mods. But I think Iron Lore is banking on a good mod community to give the game some long-term legs, especially since maps aren't random, hence questioning the real long-term allure of the game.

But for now, it rocks - even if we are still awaiting that bug patch...

d/l'd during lunch, just need to install and see what TQ is all about...

Looks really cool, saw the Trailers...

I'll probably end up buying it and trying to get the wife to play it (she doesn't play any video games that I play so she always yaps about how much I'm on the computer...) But she enjoys games, so who knows :D And if she's interested, that means I would be able to build another computer :D

Aerwynd - good luck with the wife. I've had no luck whatsoever with mine!

I'll torture her until she plays on her own free will
