OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Interesting battle. I personally prefer "set pokemon" style of battle, where switching pokemons counts as a battle move even when one pokemon faints.
Yeah, that Dratini's 4X weakness to ice is insane, haha. You touch him, he faints from it. That was funny part of battle, Jdkerr goes in... Jdkerr fainted

As for my Battle Tower challenge
I decided to try out this team for lvl 60. If I'm not mistaken, this should be nice combo there.

Umbreon: (Leftovers)
Charm - lowers opponents attack by 2 stages
Toxic - poison
Moonlight - heal
Protect - well, protects from damage for one hit

Dragonite: (don't know yet)
Rest - sleep for 2 turns + full heal
Thunder Wave - free paralyze
Surf - water attack
Wing Attack/Fly - depends on will WA be strong enough

Snorlax: (Mint Berry probably)
Rest
Amnesia - increases Special Defense by 2 stages
Belly Drum - increases Attack by 6 stages, in case of Snorlax up to 999, deducts half of HP
Return - 102 basic power with full happiness, strong attack. Body Slam is another option for 30% paralyze, however I'm not sure is lower power worth it here, I don't expect to have 999 Attack in every battle)

Umbreon is wall for everything and is very strong with her strong heal and Protect. Before I used weaker Umbreon without both Charm and Protect and she was able to faint two pokemons, this one should be able to team kill in some circumstances. Charm will cripple physical attackers badly, and her special defense is huge.

Dragonite is here to get rid of physical maniacs, namely Machamp and Heracross. Also, he is here to get rid of rock types in general, but I'm not expecting Umbreon to have problems with them.

Snorlax is another wall, he is more like backup plan, but team sweeping backup plan if setting Belly Drum up is successful. Also, he is mainly special wall, and this teams Zapdos killer. Zapdos has Rest, that totally counters Toxic from Umbreon, but that is also major downfall of both Zapdos and his team here. All I have to do is force him with Snorlax to go sleep, while I set up that 999 Attack with Belly Drum and sweep whole enemy team.

This is theory, when I train those pokemons, I will test this and also I can put some battles here as example.

Nicely done, JDK ~ A shame that you kicked the bucket yourself, but that's good work either way. I think at least half his team has Blizzard in SS (and permanent Hail... and higher levels...), so it could've been worse. :p

Good to see others are making progress and joining in as well. The theory aspect of Battle Tower is fun, but the actual playing and/or grinding and/or suffering isn't worth it. :badteeth: Looking forward to more updates on that especially though.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Haha, very fast progress! Welcome and congrats on completing Blue Nuzlocke rules, Panda. Perhaps another generatioin will start, if there's any preferance for one.

@Jdkerr - I just finished Silver as well. I'll give details later tonight. Also, I found out that if you re-beat the Elite 4, Red appears back in the cave for a rematch.) Congrats on finishing. I was also very surprised at Red's pokemon levels.

@Gripphon - The Battle Tower challenge is quite interesting. I've never really bred any eggs, minus something as a main catcher (False Swipes, Mean Look and possibly a paralyze move,) nor checked out the Tower in Platinum for a competitive challenge. Good luck, and keep the updates coming.
Also, how is Protect useful in your setup? All it does is stop damage for one turn, but at the same time, you can't set anything up.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

You people are far too good at this. :badteeth: Well played.

Protect is probably for stalling for Toxic. A well timed one could eat an attack like Explosion, if such things exist in the tower.

Another generation could be fun, even if all of the newer games aren't as difficult. Sapphire especially is just a walk after Kyogre comes into play. >_> That beast can wipe out literally everything all by itself.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

I wouldn't say I'm any good at this. I lose half of mine while training, and so end up with one over-levelled, and one over-levelled backup. XD I would've loved to have an Electric type (that potential of Ampharos would've been great,) but killed him off shortly after getting him. XD

I have a feeling that the newer generations would be harder. In Platinum (only later gen I know,) you get something with Super-Effectiveness (Water vs Fire,) and the Fire-type knows Thunder! They can learn counters to their weaknesses.

My Final Silver Team was:

Kyoshi, ~lvl 63/64 Rattata
---- Headbutt
---- Pursuit
---- Quick Attack
---- Hyper Fang

AvatarAang, ~lvl 62/63

---- Aeroblast
---- Psychic
---- Fly
---- Recover

Due, lvl 12 Bellsprout (HM Cut, HM Flash)
A. Kuruk, lvl 20 Tentacruel (HM Surf)
Yue, lvl 25 Poliwhirl (HM Whirlpool, HM Rock Smash, HM Strength, HM Waterfall

The Final Battle Against Red:
I apologise, as I didn't write this immediately, and can't recall the exact battle. I was very surprised by Red's Pokemon's levels (all very high,) and wasn't sure how my two, around mid-60's would do. But basically went along the lines of:

Kyoshi, Hyper Fang!
AvatarAang, Aeroblast!
AvatarAang, Recover.

*uses potion as required*

Snorlax being a tank would've taken a few hits, but I sent out AvatarAang, as it could use Recover, on top of healings/paralyse removal potions when required, while still maintaining strong attacks.

I couldn't replicate the flawless victory on the next run (Kyoshi died against Red's Blastoise,) so maybe I got lucky with move/pokemon choices the first time, or did something silly on the second. Either way, Red was defeated first time without Kyoshi or AvatarAang dying, and the second time, AvatarAang finished the battle fairly easily after Blastoise killed Kyoshi.

Third time, I accidently sent Kyoshi against Snorlax, and that clearly didn't work. I definitely sent AvatarAang against Snorlax and Blastoise, thus saving Kyoshi completely.

Using emulator ultimate speed, I ran the Elite 4 a fourth time, knowing how the flawless victory was made.

Against Pikachu and Espeon were Kyoshi with Hyper Fang's
Against Snorlax and Blastoise were AvatarAang
And against Charizard and Venasaur, I probably kept AvatarAang out (Recover is an amazing skill.)

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

@Drystan

Why Protect, you ask? Reason lies in attack move named Toxic. Very unique move. His damage adds up every turn, you can read more about it on bulbapedia if you want to. When I set up Toxic, it lasts forever until cured with some move like Heal Bell, potion or Rest move. As far as I know, Rest is the only way how AI cures from poison, they don't use Heal Bell or potions to do it, you can't use potions in Battle Tower anyway.

So, after I set up Toxic, my offensive strategy is finished. All I have to do is stall, keep Umbreon alive until opponent's pokemon faint. Moonlight is strong healing move at night, but has only 5 moves, so Protect is here to keep Umbreon alive in a way Moonlight is and to prolonge that 5 pp from Moonlight to higher number. It takes 6 turns for Toxic to kill, thanks to Protect I will have more Moonlights to go for the next opponent. Charm is here for the same purpose: stall and keep yourself alive until enemy faints. There is not much else what Umbreon can do, her defensive stats are awesome, but offensive stats are bad, her attack is so weak it's almost impossible to make any kind of good attacker out of her. Toxic is the best way to go, with that move you use best stats Umbreon has - defensive stats.

You can try another strategy with her, that is somewhat riskier, but more team oriented. Toxic is standard, Moonlight too (unless you want to have Rest, that is also good option, but I prefer to have active heal and leave Rest for competitive playing or for situations when I have to deal with status ailments), Double Team and Baton Pass. Same strategy, but this time in between heals you use Double Team few times, that will increase your survivability, and then Baton Pass it to your strongest pokemon to steal the show.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

I am going to play again. I had planned on Emerald. If someone would like to do a different one, let me know soon. :)

This time I will go "set" style. I think I will also refrain from looking at evolutions, stats, and movesets at all (if I can bear it!), and I will favor >GenI pokemon (since that is all I had played prior to this thread, so that is an easy way to practice the principle of "pokemon you would not normally use").

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Just because I like talking about shuckle so much:
Bide, rest, toxic, double team :) can handle most of battle tower in Ruby version, but cannot handle metagross.

I can vouch for protect + toxic on those who can learn it, too. Couple that with leech seed if possible!

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Battle Tower challenge:

Team:
Trained pokemons today, they turn out to be outstandingly great. Allow me to introduce my pokemons, this time it's a real deal, not a theory.

Team lvl 60

Umbreon @ Leftovers
Hp (231), Defense (178), Sp. Def (208), Speed (125)
Toxic
Protect
Moonlight
Charm

Her stats are slightly below average for a full trained pokemon, but she is fine.

Dragonite @ Berry (only to test, I have Gold Berry)
Hp (230), Attack (221), Defense (156), Sp. Atk. (171), Sp Def (171), Speed (148)
Wing Attack
Surf
Thunder Wave
Rest

His stats are average. Above average Hp, amazing 1 off perfect attack, lowest defense, average other stats.

Snorlax @ Mint Berry
Hp (308), Attack (192), Defense (127), Sp Def (191), Speed (81)
Body Slam ---> Return
Belly Drum
Amnesia
Rest

This thing is a beast. Average Hp, but 1 off perfect attack (again), 2 off perfect Special Defense and average other stats. Jackpot.

I can write more about how to get this things (Well yes, use TM, but I mean with breeding, passing moves etc.), some tips about breeding, about training stat experience and such. This is rather boring theory, but if someone wants to ask something related to that, I might know the answer to that question.
Body Slam is not good choice here, but don't have Return TM yet, so I'll wait for that to complete this team. Thing is with Body Slam I have 2 paralyze attack in team, and that is bad news for Umbreon.

First Battle Tower experience + demonstration of battle
Nothing unusual here, battle like every other in this topic and pokemon world. But this is challenging because opponents are the same level as you are, or higher, and have pokemons with great stats, just like every other perfectly trained pokemon, unless you get lucky with near-perfect key stats pokemon like I did with Snorlax.
This are first battles when I entered Tower for a good old times. And, as in good old times, enemies had much luck :P

Battle number 1:
I started with Umbreon, enemy sent out Golem.
I switched to Dragonite. Golem used Frustration (Dragonite has HP of 75% after taking a hit)
Dragonite used Surf. It's super effective! Golem fainted.

I switched to Dragonite. Parasect used Sludge Bomb. (Dra has 25% HP)
Dragonite used Wing Attack. It's super effective! GG Parasect.

Battle number 2:
I started with Umbreon, enemy sent out Heracross.
I switched to Dragonite. Heracross used Megahorn. It's not very effective. (Dra 75% HP)
Heracross used Megahorn. Dragonite used Thunder Wave. Heracross is paralyzed! (Dra 55% HP)
Dragonite used Wing Attack. It's super effective! Heracross hung on with Focus Band (1 hp). Heracross used Megahorn (Dra 25% HP)
Dragonite used Wing Attack. Heracross hung on again (1 hp -__-). Heracross is fully paralyzed.
Dragonite used Wing Attack. Heracross fainted.

Enemy sent out Umbreon.
Dragonite used Thunder Wave. Umbreon is paralyzed. Umbreon used Faint Attack. (low damage, Dra on 20 % hp)
Dragonite used Rest. Fell asleep and is healty. Umbreon used F.A. again resulting in low damage.
I waited 2 tuns for Dragonite awake and Umbreon attacked with F.A. dealing low damage.
I switched to Snorlax. Umbreon again FA.
Snorlax used Belly Drum. Snorlax cut its HP and maximizes his Attack. Umreon used FA. (Snorlax on 35% HP)
Snorlax used Rest and is healed now. Umbreon used FA. Snorlax recovered with Mint Berry and is awake now.
Snorlax used Body Slam. Umbreon fainted.

Enemy sent out Arcanine.
Arcanine used Iron Tail. Snorlax used Body Slam. Arcanine fainted.

Battle number 3:
I started with Umbreon. Enemy started with Blastoise.

Umbreon used Toxic. Snorlax is badly poisoned. Snorlax used Surf. (Umb 60% HP)
Umbreon used Protect. Snorlax used Surf, but it failed.
I switched to Dragonite and finished off Snorlax.

Battle number 4:
This battle happened on second round. I could write about stalling with Umbreon and killing more things etc., but that lasts long and is boring. Toxic, Protect, Protect, Moonlight, Protect... Zapdos was the only interesting opponent left, and he died to buffer Belly Drum Snorlax in one blow.

I started with Umbreon. Enemy started with Dragonite.
Umbreon used Toxic etc etc...
Second opponent was Heracross, it was the same as before, but this time he really died from first Wing Attack.

Next is Wobbuffet. Now this is AI abuse, but who cares. :P
Dragonite used Wing Attack, Wobbuffet used Safeguard.
Dragonite used Surf. Wobbuffet used Counter. It failed!
Dragonite used Wing Attack. Wobbuffet used Mirror Coat. It failed!
Dragonite used Surf. Wobbuffet used Counter. It failed!
Dragonite used Wing Attack. Wobbuffet used Mirror Coat. It failed!
Dragonite used Surf. Wobbuffet fainted.

Conclusion to this team:
Well obviously Snorlax with Curse instead of Belly Drum is much better, he would fit in this team perfectly. However he is overpowered to use against AI. Like this its challenging, this team needs practice to be successfull. It is very important to know when to Belly Drum, when to Amnesia + attack, when to sent Umbreon out, when to use Thunder Wave etc... I made few mistakes, like Belly Drum at the wrong time (ended up with dead Snorlax ofc), forgot to switch Dragonite against Kingdra and such.

One battle was especially amusing! My Umbreon vs opponents Machamp. Well obviously Umbreon is weak to fighting type, and Machamp is the boss in that battle. But... Umbreon is faster, and that fact can be lifesaving for her. I started with Charm to lower Machamps attack, with that I effectively negated my own weakness cause his attack was 50% weaker. Machamp has Quick Claw, so he has 23% chance to attack first even against faster pokemon. Well, he did attack first in second turn, but that wasnt enought to kill me, and I used Charm again. After that, Moonlight, then protect, then again charm... And all is set up for Toxic party. Yes, Machamp died, and Umbreon had 80% HP after that battle. But that was only a test, only thing I could do is try to cast Charm first, if not, Umbreon will be at really low HP and become almost useless for further combat.

Weaknesses to this team on lvl 60 Battle Tower? Well, there is much room for you to make mistake, misjudgment and such. Also, critical hits are obvious downfall to this team. Machamp with crazy critical hits against Dragonite will win, and then I'll be left with Umbreon and Snorlax, both weak to fighting type. Umbreon can win if she gets attack first, but another critical will be game over. Snorlax has nothing to do against Machamp unless Dragonite or Umbreon with Protect empty Cross Chop moves (it has only 5). Also, CC has 80% to miss which is very helpful.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

I am inspired today for more pokemon battling, so here are more examples of how it looks like with my team. This time I had different approach to my team and changed few things around. Now Umbreon is holding ParalyzeCure Berry, Dragonite has Mint Berry and Snorlax is holding Leftovers.
I hope those battles will demonstrate how powerful Snorlax is cause he is often star in my team. When I moved Leftovers from Umbreon, her staying power decreased drastically so I had to focus more on Snorlax, and that is quite rewarding as you might notice in battle examples here

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

How many battles are there before winning? Is there a final champion round?

Also, why do you use Protect twice. I can't recall it working twice in a row, so wouldn't Toxic, Charm or Moonlight be better? Or is this a PP-related thing?

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Destiny Bond the destroyer of worlds. Looks like a pretty good team though.

Protect can work multiple times in a row, but it loses accuracy by some amount (not sure how much) with each consecutive one.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

There are 7 battles in a row, you must win all of them to get a prize. Well prize is bad, 5 random vitamins.

Protect loses 50% accuracy after consecutive use. So second time it's 50%, third is 25%...
Why Protect twice in a row? Perhaps it's not needed. I use that when I judge that is not bad option to use. Moonlight has only 5 pp, so when I don't really need healing or have no use from Charm, then I rather Protect twice in a row to avoid damage and save pp from Moonlight. If I take damage, well then I use Moonlight next turn to heal back up to good percentage. It's easier against physical attackers cause after two Charms they don't really damage me, so I can spam around more. Against special attacker I don't have use with Charm, and when on good HP, then I don't want to waste Moonlight (unless enemy is hard on damage and faster than me). In those cases I try double Protect rather than wasting precious heal on already high enough HP. Opponent can surprise me with critical hit, especially that Tyranitar dude. But without critical, his damage is silly.
Against Jynx, first Protect blocks her. Now I am on full HP, Moonlight is out of question, Charm is useless, and Toxic will fail cause she has Berry to cure her so I need to Toxic her twice. Instead I want to drain her Blizzard pp cause her damage is devastating with that attack. That's why I rather try twice Protect than something that is not useful to me. Twice Protect is saving pp of Moonlight. It's much easier to spend all Moonlight than Protect pp. Umbreon is tank, she can take a hit, even critical one with 50% more HP. Once I managed to use 4 Protects in a row, that saved me much Moonlight pp and Umbreon was like a new for second battle.

I battle the way I feel in that time, sometimes I kill Jynx with Umbreon, sometimes I rather switch to Snorlax to buff him up. Sometimes I want to set up Belly Drum on Houndoom, sometimes I want to kill him with Dragonite, sometimes with simple Body Slam. I like to test things, so sometimes I go head to head with Umbreon against Machamp. Stupid to do, but why not anyway.

Also, as I hopefully demonstrated in battles, Umbreon IS Toxic killer, but her role is not only that, she has many roles in a team, 3 to be precise. First, she drains Jynx's Blizzard pp because otherwise I have hard time tanking her with Snorlax, especially if she critical hit me or freeze me. Yes, Jynx deserves that special treatment, her Blizzard is ridiculous. Second role is to Charm physical attackers, then switch to Snorlax to buff him up or to Dragonite to finish opponent of. Third is Toxic killer. So, I don't always want to Toxic opponent. I think more times I simply use Charm and switch than Toxic kill with her, and sometimes I decide to kill all with her, or at least 2 pokemons if possible cause killing all is hard to pull off, because if any of Golem, Houndoom, Zapdos, Skarmory, Blissey, Heracross, Machamp, Wobbuffet came up, then I can't finish off killing. I could in a case of Blissey and Machamp, but is hard to do and requires much time loosing (Blissey) or much luck (Machamp with critical will 1 hit kill her). Golem will explode, Houndoom and Zapdos have Rest what renders Toxic useless, Skarmory is immune, Heracross 1 hit kills Umbreon no matter what and Wobbuffet is always under Safeguard protection, and even if not, he will Destiny Bond me with him.

Battle 8:

Is just to Battle 7 that gives you a prize, and further battles are just to test you further?

Thanks for the explanation. Interesting theory-crafting and planning. Something I have never even considered, and it looks like you have a solid plan/team with you. Good luck continuing!

@omgwtfbbqpwned - Join us! You know you want to.

@jdkerr - I've had a look, and I think Emerald is a generation/area I haven't played yet. I think. I'll join you in it, along with Set style. I'll also try to keep them all around the same level, and capable of battling.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

I finished crystal the other day, was good fun up to and including the elite guys but the other continent wasn't really a challenge, and none of my pokemon were even level 60 so i couldnt be bothered trying to fight red.

I've now started emerald (a game and generation I haven't played before on cartridge) and I've switched to set style aswell. So far I've wiped twice, first to the fighting trainer and then to the 2nd encounter vs my rival. On my 3rd try I've rolled the water/ground starter and the two other pokemon I've caught have half water typing aswell so I think I'll just skip the 2nd rival encounter because STAB super effective moves are too much for these low spd unevolved pokemon. This time Ill overtrain my pokemon and bulbapedia new pokemon since I am generally unable to predict their typing by their appearance or name.

My displayed battles here are not from the same round of battle tower challenge, I thing that they are randomly selected battles from 3 different challenges. You go in, you fight 7 consecutive battles (if you win that is, otherwise you lose), and then you are a winner and go out with a prize. I didn't show 7 consecutive battles from one battle tower challenge cause some battles are rather boring and many battles are basically the same, with repeating strategy. Boring in a way I have Dragonite out, and enemy first sends Rhydon, then Golem. All I can show from that battle is how I 1 hit kill them with Surf. Or when something like that happens.

Thank you, I will continue my challenge. Need to find a new strategy with new pokemons, but it's not easy, not for level 60 that is. Now I have more experience from lvl 60 battling and can't think of new strategy without at least one major flaw in it. But that's why I like battle tower, you learn about true strengths and weaknesses of each pokemon, something you learn only partially in a simple questing through game. You learn how to use some moves along. Downside is that requires time, speed abusing in game to breed faster, to train faster, fast killing elite 4 to level up and farm money...

@ Panda
Exactly that. You beat elite 4 with pokemons of level 50+, or like 60 like my Magmar was, and then go to Kanto where opponents are waker than any member of elite four with overleveled pokemons. I had Magmar around level 60 and Poliwrath near that level, Meganium around 55... with that I simply won every battle in Kanto without even trying. Blue was first so called challenge there.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Well I'm really starting to like emerald. The new pokemon are generally cool with mixed typings i havent seen before, and there are some cool new skills aswell. I'm still annoyed at having to waste skill slots on HMs, and then I didnt catch any pokemon that learned cut so I had to catch an oddish just to progress. Then theres rock smash which is **** aswell so I'm just using a low level pokemon for that.

I just fought my pap in his gym and lost my hariyama to counter from slaking and numel was just 1 shotted by facad which was pretty lame aswell. Wish I would've remembered slaking only attacks every other round then I couldve just bulked up with hariyama a couple times and then one shotted slaking.. After those two deaths I switched in swampert and just only attacked during the idle turn, using potions or bide or curing sleep in between to be safe from counter. I have a slugma and a machop that can replace the lost ones but being unable to fully upgrade machop makes him unappealing and slugma's evolution magcargo has bad stats and bad typing so I might just wait and try to catch something else.

Now I just caught a jigglypuff that I was leveling, wanted to get it to lvl 34 for body slam before using my moonstone but 2 levels away and ****ing linoone gets a crit on me.

Ok, things are much more interesting here in Emerald. My own rules:

(1) Set style
(2) No pokemon numbered in the original 150.
(3) No online resources whatsoever (unless I am stuck somewhere by the story).

I have already lost a number of pokemon (four, perhaps?), so that is good. Currently, I am working with my starter (grass again), some sort of moth, and a recently captured fire/ground turtley fellow. I just found my way to a town surrounded by ash.

Re: OT: The Nuzlocke Challenge (Pokemon)

Good luck jdkerr, especially once you reach your dad :P The ****er wiped everything but my starter and when I fought rival again I didnt stand a chance with 1 pokemon and had to start over.Several hours later and I'm back to where I was.

I've resorted to using online resources all the time, because otherwise theres no tactics involved.. I mean when I cant see what typing a pokemon I'm facing has or what the move he just chose does then the only tactics available is overleveling everything, and when I can't choose freely between the pokemon I find and catch then its not possible to have a counter for everything.
