OT: Need a new TV series

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

1 for walking dead. and itt's true that it's more of a drama and less of a skull bashing (which I'd love), but I like it for some strange reason.
By the way, go oldschool, watch Sledge Hammer.
He's God of Gods!!!

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

Breaking Bad.

Arrested Development.

Heroes. Do yourself a favor and stop watching after season two. It ends with a cliffhanger, but leaving it unresolved is better than what they did with season three.

The Office.

30 Rock.

Firefly.

House.

These are all good, but Breaking Bad, Arrested Development, and Firefly are the BEST. Watch them. Now.

I have always heard good things about Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but haven't seen it yet. I should do that. . .

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

Lots of great suggestions in this thread already, so I'll only add the two that haven't been mentioned.

Fringe - without doubt the best science fiction show currently made. Not that that is a very hard achievement... :(
Extras - hilarious British comedy.

P.S. Babylon 5 and The Wire are the greatest shows ever made. Works of art.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

I like how some people think around here! :D

Breaking Bad is a MUST. holy :censored: !! you will watch one and at the end you're like, "WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?!!?" there are some slow eps, but not one of them is a bad episode. amazing!

Archer is hilarious!! def a must!

Lately, I've been watching Dollhouse. It's a show created by Joss Wheadon who did Firefly too (iirc) and it's only two seasons but I am hooked! I haven't had a whole lot of time to watch more, but I def recommend it. It has a VERY interesting premise.

If you like animated shows, Metalocalypse, Venture Bros., Invader Zim...

<---is a cartoon freak. >.>

good luck and have fun! :D

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

If you like Archer, you'll like "The Life and Times of Tim."

"The League" is pretty fun, too. "Bored to Death" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" are both excellent as well.

Big Bang Theory is frighteningly horrible, I find. No originality whatsoever, just a mindless retread of blatant stereotypes. I'd rather turn the TV off than punish myself with it.

Edit: "Justified" is a very good cop drama.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

I'm currently watching:
[* = Top recommendation]

Dramas (sci-fi/fantasy):
* Supernatural - still running, good show, lots to catch up on - 2 brothers that take on all manner of supernatural baddies
* Grimm - upstart kind of along the line of Supernatural - quite good so far, in the the first season.
True Blood - Vampires, werewolves, all that - and copious nudity. GG HBO!
Vampire Diaries - Vampires, werewolves, all that - without the nudity. Yeah, its for teenage girls - I just channel my inner OMG. Story drives FAST - very little stalling of storyline.
Walking Dead - Several votes for that, and I agree it's good, but it's not my favorite show
Being Human - Actually pretty good take on the Vamp/WW genre - I'm watching the US version
Once Upon a Time - a little lighter fare, but pretty compelling story so far - a little slow with copious flashbacks a-la Lost, but not nearly as confusing as, say, Lost
Alkatraz - Jury's still out, but it's kept my interest so far.

Dramedys:
* Psych - very excellent, long running but stil current show about a slacker that poses as a psychic.
The Finder - Good so far, still waiting to see if it delivers in the long haul.

Some series that I watched in the past but are no longer running:

* Battlestar Gallactica (the recent SciFi verision) - very well done revamp of the old 70s series, is MUCH deeper and more sophisticated
* Chuck - Dramedy about a nerdy guy that gets involved in the CIA
Enterprise - the UPN/CW last version of the Star Trek series that is a prequel to the 60s classic - I liked it quite a bit as it re-introduced many of the original alien species from the original.
Life on Mars (BBC) - NOT the ABC version - about a cop that has apparently gone back in time to 1973 - fairly short as BBC series have much shorter seasons than american, but very compelling story and great period sets and music. The sequel, Ashes to Ashes, is OK if you have to get more, but not nearly as good as the original. The ABC version is horrible as they ended it with a figurative finger to the network execs.
The 4400 - Cool USA Network series about all the people that have gone missing all showing up en masse with special powers.
Lost - only if you really want to delve into the maze of story turns to see if you can follow, or just have a ton of show-watching time you want to fill.

OK, there's my 2 (well, 20) cents.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

My personal recommendations:

Drama

Battlestar Galactica – An excellent political/war drama that just happens to be set in space. Certain themes in the later seasons can be a bit aggravating. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYjLrJRuMnY
Boardwalk Empire – Prohibition era gangsters and politicians fighting for control of Atlantic City. It has some stellar plot twists and phenomenal acting.
Breaking Bad – The best show currently on television.
Game of Thrones – Probably the most ambitious television adaptation ever produced. It is an absolute joy to watch.
Sherlock – A brilliant modern rendition of the classic tales. The episode quality is not entirely consistent, but there is definitely a lot more good than bad.
Spartacus – Gratuitous amounts of sex and violence with the added bonus of a solid plot. Unfortunately, the first few episodes are not very good.

Comedy

Archer – No other show has as many hilarious running gags and one-liners. Every episode has several gut-bustingly funny moments. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TR4ufW_V_o
Community – A sitcom not afraid to take a few risks. The theme episodes (Goodfellas, Halloween, Christmas, paintball, D&D, chaos theory, etc…) are usually astoundingly funny.
Venture Bros. – Takes retro stuff like Scooby-Doo, Jonny Quest, comic books, and pulp fiction and turns them on their heads in the funniest ways possible. Despite the standalone nature of most episodes, the setting and characters are continually evolving. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtB_jvznaNM

There are a lot of other shows I watch, but mainly only out of habit. For instance, I regularly watch HIMYM, The Big Bang Theory, and The Walking Dead, but I do not find myself truly enjoying most of the episodes. HIMYM has some great ideas, but it often falters in their execution. The Big Bang Theory sticks too close to standard sitcom fare and tends to go for easy laughs rather than take a chance on potentially funnier material. The Walking Dead is not terrible by any means, but the acting is often subpar and the show seemed to be treading water for first half of the current season; some people use the comics to justify this, but I believe in judging the show on its own merits. In any case, the shows I listed above are what I believe to be the best of the best in terms of what I actually watch. There are quite a few others shows I have not yet seen, yet have heard very good things about.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

My recommendations:

Breaking Bad: see above.

Rescue Me: A very good dark drama/comedy about firemen in post-911 New York. This is the best drama/comedy I have watched to date.

Something more marginal:

The Thick Of It: A British political comedy. Available on Youtube.

Black Books: A somewhat short British black comedy. Dylan Moran is awesome.

Yes! Someone else who likes Spartacus. I can't believe with the "violent nature" of this game we all love so much that it hasn't been mentioned more... I'm kind of a die hard.

I really liked the first season of Walking Dead and haven't had a chance to watch any of the second. It is a little slower of a drama and the acting can be rough at times, but it's a zombie show.

If you like toons, I've been a fan of most shows that come on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Robot Chicken and Aqua Teen Hunger Force are favorites though. Ridiculously stupidly awesome.

And I also like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo if you're into any kind of anime.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

I never quite got Heroes, but I do mean to watch it all in a marathon week sometime, I'm sure it'll be quite good done back-to-back,

I think S1 Lost is my favourite season of anything ever. Then I'd say its a long slippery slope, but this isn't unusual for JJ Abrams. For some odd reason I seem to listen to Alias to put myself to sleep but wind up watching an hour or two every night, just over and over. Once I get to the end, I just start from the beginning again. Alias has some of the best season cliffhangers.

ER. ER was amazingly amazing way back in the day and while the first few seasons look a bit dated now, it is still incredibly well written and acted.

And if all else fails, I get some 90s Star Trek on. TNG >= Voyager > DS9.

Currently I'm sort've enjoying Unforgettable. However, I may just be enjoying Poppy Montgomery

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

I can't believe I forgot Rescue Me. Amazing show. Amazing theme tune as well.

The American version of The Office is absolutely amazing, and is possibly my top non-drama of all time.

I really didn't like Chuck, and the entire premise of The Big Bang Theory is flawed and therefore null, though the episode where Penny plays Conan is amusing.
