New games suck, I'm back to D2

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

from time to time i get back to infinity engine games, also i discovered recently Nethack (Vulture eye) for some nice gameplay

Nethack is the best game I have every played, hands down.

It should be played in ASCII for full effect. @

Welcome back Nightfish!

That reminds me, after all these years, I still have to try the build that made you famous.
Though it's still not a Sorc, so that's a major challenge already... (or still, really)

Hi! \o/ That reminds me in turn: Did you ever finish your huge sorceress project? I forget what it was exactly, but I remember that it was pretty big...

As for trying my "signature" build... It's not mandatory. ;) Personally I like it alright, probably one of my 10 favorite builds, but I can see how it's not for everybody. And going from a purty sorc to someone who desperately hopes that inner values count for something is kinda hard. Easy on the eyes the necro is not...

I never did... Way too flighty state of mind back then. And I got sucked into WoW *hides*. BUT I still have the write-out somewhere, so I could do it again in 1.13. And it's not that big, just seven Sorces if I recall correctly.

I know it's not mandatory! Still want to try it one day, though, and go beyond level 20 *cough*. Also has nothing to do with looks at all, haha. Just with play style, really. Same with the bow-druid +wolf pack, it's less interesting to let a pack do something, whether the pack is wolves or skellies...

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

I dunno. I kinda like the play style. And once you get CE going it's not like you're not doing anything. You just need the ... primer of a corpse, if you will. But the everything falls into place. Well, various places, really, after getting blown up forcefully.

What I always really enjoyed is how the Skellies AI actually works pretty well. Maybe it's just me, but I really like that. They are pretty quick about finding targets and they take them down nicely.

Oh yea, and I'll try not to take offense at the comparison to a bow & wolfpack druid. I mean, seriously... That's like comparing and ICBM to spitballs... This is an outrage! Roar!

Anyway... If you want something more sorc-like, maybe you'll like my popular 'zon build. Doesn't really play that much differently than a sorc. Somewhat more durable and no teleport, but that's about it.

Hahaha, I'm sorry... Wolves are more...fluffy...though, a bit more cuddly! But AI-wise they're terrible! They're always off sniffing this stone or that wall or whatever and even when resummoning they seem more confused than eager to do my druid's bidding.

I kinda like the idea of a poison mancer, actually, with a back-up of something toothy if possible. But I fear I need better gear for that. I have found my old stashes (and characters!), so I do have heaps and heaps of gear, but for some incredibly unclear reason I'm hesitant to use anything from it, so I'm slowly rebuilding. And I'm actually enjoying having one stash per character and only using said one stash per that character. It's something different (to me) than just running bosses and then plonking the newest shinies on chars, etc.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Well, you can do a poison + CE mancer pretty much untwinked. If you mix in attract and decrep for act bosses he'll be very safe, too. I wouldn't mix bone spear / spirit with poison, though. Teeth... kinda needs lots of twinky gear to be good, I'm sorry to say.

(my main point about skellies was that they do great damage, compared to wolves. granted in part this is due to amp damage, but still...)

Wolves (...) They're always off sniffing this stone or that wall or whatever and even when resummoning they seem more confused than eager to do my druid's bidding.

Well... Have you ever seen a dog?

Not the same thing, I know, but close enough.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

(Although I will duel anyone saying Planescape: Torment is not perfect to the death. TO THE DEATH!)

Planescape: Torment is indeed one of the best, most deepest games that I have ever played. Brilliant storyline. The only problem is that it was much too short, and its a damn shame that there was no expansion for it (especially considering how the game ends). For me though, the Baldur's Gate saga remains the best game series ever made. P:T should've also used the BG interface, imo. Have you played Fallout (1 and 2)? You wont be disappointed with those two games either, mate.

Welcome back, btw.

PS. Try Eastern Sun Mod if you get bored with vanilla(-ish) D2.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Welcome back Nightfish!

You and Thyiads page were responsible for me picking up D2 again and cracking hell level with a Fishymancer for the first time, a common tale I know.

Just started the game again, trying a Windy Druid as druids are about the only class I haven't made all the way through to Mat/Pat.

Planescape and Ice wind Dale remain favorites..along with Temple of Elemental Evil, despite its story issues..

Anyway, great to see you back!!

Common tale or not, makes me happy every time I hear someone getting good use out of the guide I wrote. That's almost as nice as getting free waffles. :badteeth: Mmmm... Waffles.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Belated welcome back. :)

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Funny story, Nightfish. Your mancer build is so widely regarded the default starter build that when I first came to this site asking advice on build to beat the 1.09 patch, the Fishymancer was the response I received, and I actually started one before I realized that it very decidedly not the go-to build for a starter 1.09 character.

I originally planned to go with your build as my first post-1.09 character, but I ended up with good gear for a melee starter. I do plan to beat the game with a "Fishy" before my D2 days are done.

Yes dude, I saw people recommend that more than once... Thankfully, most of the time someone stepped up and was like "Eh, guys? This is 1.09. Skellies are the ssuuuuuccckkkkk in 1.09." I know I did if I ever caught it in time.

Still, in 1.10, this remains one of my favorite builds. It just synergises so well even though it uses no synergy at all. Might, Amp, CE, Skellies, etc. It just all falls into place as it should and... and... *snif* ... it's so beautiful.... *weeps*

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

You'll be pleased to hear Nightfish that one of my current projects is a not-quite-naked HC Fishymancer. I'm allowing him to wear a plain belt to hold potions, because I'm a wuss. I'm also using whatever charms he can find. Obviously slower than the average summoner, but a bit more interesting as I can't rely on +skills for the usual 1-point wonders Summon Resist, Gumby + Mastery, and Amp Damage, and have to invest some hard points in them.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

The silly thing is that this can actually work. I can't find the thread anymore, but at least one guy got a nekkid guardian that way before. At one point I probably tried that myself as well, but I don't know if I finished that project or if that was pwnd by hibernation, as it were...
