New games suck, I'm back to D2

That's right, Fishy's coming home. *cue imperial march*

The last couple games I bought were massive disappointments to me. Dumbed down to 11, rushed, unfinished and overall just sad. Maybe I've just reached a point in my life where I just hate new things and view old stuff through the nostalgic goggles? But I don't think so... I believe I can recognise and appreciate quality when I see it... The thing is, I'm not seeing it these days... Pretty much the only thing that improves are graphics and everything else seems to suffer for it. I guess it's because vids and screenshots sell games and once their sold who cares if the game is actually good?

Most recently, my gaming heart has been broken my Dragon Age 2. What faith I had in Bioware is pretty much shattered. They've removed nearly everything that was good about DA:O and expanded everything that was bad and introduced a whole bunch of other bad as well. Bad. Baaaad. No wonder they had to write and upvote their own fake reviews for this PoS... Anyway... I could go on for longer than it took me to beat the game about why it sucks donkey balls, but let's not do that. You don't want to read that and writing it down in depth doesn't make my gaming experience any better either...

Why is it that each game assumes I've been getting dumber? Back in my day, we didn't have quest markers, we kept journals on a piece of paper or in - dramatic pause - OUR MEMORY. -gasp- Now? There is a big fat marker for the guy who gives the quest, preferably an arrow I can follow to him, too. Then a big fat marker / arrow on what I have to kill for the quest and then a big fat arrow showing me the way back. Gee, thanks for challenging me, game. Srsly, thanks. Ideally each level is a tube as well. I got as much freedom to explore as a freight train. Funny enough, I hit about as hard so maybe I'm on to something here...

I'd have to check when I last fired up D2, what I do know is that I was pretty sure that after 51 guardians and 15-ish Mats / Pats I'd be done for good. I guess I should have known better.

So yea. Screw new games. I've been playing X-COM, Tie-Fighter, Planescape: Torment, Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy 3 and now it's back to D2.

As I type this, I'm installing D2 and LoD again. Which is why there is so much text. Installing the game takes freaking forever...

I've been browsing the SP-MP forum as well and it seems there is sporadic interest in HC MP. I'll host a few games as I start fresh and untwinked and see if it catches on.

So... hi again. :badteeth:

Welcome back fishy!

Is it time for another sept sept or are you up to something more challenging now? :whistling:

p.s. hc vanilla is where the fun is ;)

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Welcome back, NF!

Never thought I'd see the day, tbh. I'd be into some MP with you, if you'd have me.

Which time zone do you live in? Oh, and I guess: would you even consider installing 1.13c, or would you stick to 1.12a, or whatever you used to play (1.11a?)

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Welcome back, Nightfish! I thought I was the only one around here who still played XCOM occasionally (LOL, I asked a guy with the username Krizalllid if he played, and he had no idea what I was talking about...), and Tie Fighter still rocks as well (though I have to keep an old win98 box around to play it...I never got it to run right in dosbox...)

Welcome back to real gaming! I guess you're not looking forward to D3 ;) ? (In all seriousness, I'm having my doubts about D3... could be awesome, could be lame, but that's a thing for another time.)

As much as I loved Secret of Mana back in the days... nowadays it can't seem to interest me anymore. I defeated to the Spring Beak boss and got Sylphid before quitting. I dunno why, it used to be in my top 5 games of all time. I guess it's too simplistic and linear. Oh well...

I've switched to HC a few months back and haven't looked back since. I expect my 6th Guardian in about a week, assuming things don't go awry, and my 7th right after. No deaths so far. So yeah, things are looking good, but I'm a looong, looong way from having a sept sept. :scratchchin:

Maybe I'll join the MP, but I usually don't play longer than one hour max a day, and I don't know when either. I'll be watching out for games, though.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Welcome back! X-Com r0XXORz - too bad they flubbed the sequel so bad. It's one of the few games I ever stuck with to finish completely.

Have fun with HC.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Welcome back

Currently in the process of building a fishymancer after years playing everything but a necromancer and loving it.

Thanks for your replies, guys. :)

Well, I'm still torn between playing with an inverted mouse or having Justin Bieber songs run in the background...

p.s.: I want's mah ladder roonwords, sorreh :P

Sure I'd haz you. :P As for the patch... Well, I just went and connected to battle.net to patch. In retrospect I will probably miss iron maiden, but I'll get over it, I guess. Timezone-wise I'm in europe, so my gaming time is around... now-ish?

X-COM rules. Another franchise that went downhill after the first game... And now they're turning it into a FPS game set in the fifties. For the love of god, people, stop ra.....vaging my childhood!

Tie Fighter rocks indeed but I can't really get the joystick to work properly so I'm playing on hard with a mouse. Gives me quite the workout, I can tell you that... o.O

I'm half-way between anticipation and apprehension here.. Appretacion or anticihension, if you will... You know that facial expression the crew of Futurama got when they had to snoo-snoo the Amazonians? Kinda like that. (+5 approval rating for anyone who knows what I'm talking about)

Then again, it can't be a bigger let-down than Dragon Age 2. That one actually physically nauseated me. This is something no game has ever achieved. Print that on your box, I dare you...

It's a bit too easy and the story isn't really that good if you're not 12. FF3 holds up much better. But when I'm in a nostalgic mood I can still get into it. Was my first game for the SNES after all...

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Welcome back NF. HC ain't the same without you. I'd be down for some MP wit ya.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Welcome back! I too have read many of your guides. Any ideas on a first project?

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Tss you never learn do you nightfish:wink:

All the good games have been released already(at least it feels that way at times)

Hopefully soemthing good will be released in the future but as more crappy games are released eatch year it will be harder and harder to find them.

Good luck in d2 i cant play it any longer and besides i have +15 games to compleate even before i will look at that game again.

So the total amount of games i compleated while you where gone is "drumroll" 0 :whistling:

Did you ever do a wirtadin? just for kicks you could remake a classic:scratchchin:

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Welcome back! I look forward to more of your insight and very readable guardian threads / guides.

Agree with you 100% about how rubbish modern games are.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

So yea. Screw new games. I've been playing X-COM, Tie-Fighter, Planescape: Torment, Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy 3 and now it's back to D2.

Except from FF3, those all belong on the lovely list of my favourite games of all time. Secret of Mana (played through it all again ~a month ago) and X-COM (called UFO where I come from) in particular. Tie Fighter holds a dear spot in my heart as well, it was the first PC game I ever bought. It was on three floppy disks I think and I played it on my parents' Pentium 100. Recently played Torment almost to the end, just have the final chapter left. Best writing ever.

As for X-COM, I recently found this and I am following it closely:

Might be disappointing, but might also turn out to be a jewel. God knows the small production value is more of an advantage than anything else. Let's hope noone decides to invest more cash in it and ruin everything :badteeth:

Nostalgia-induced rant is now over. Welcome back Nightfish, I will try to take your advice about killing ancients with no decoy on the Fishyzon. I wish I was as good at D2 as I am/was at those other games :)

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

My MP thread thingy can be found here: NF goes MP!

I'll update it whenever I'm on and think of it.

Seriously, isn't it? That game literally blew my mind. Not because it's spectacular. It's just... Wow. Definetly the best game I ever played and I have no doubt it will never be surpassed for me.

@Lone-wolf: You're too right... Btw, what games have you got sitting around that need playing? Maybe I've missed a few gems myself. Rarely happens, but sometimes a good game slips under my radar.

@HeadKick: I think the time for projects is over. ;) Just gonna dabble a bit for the fun of it.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

Ohhhh... I remember the first X-COM. It. was. awesome!

I played it on a monochromatic monitor (!), usually with a friend of mine. I was like the only guy in school with a computer. I think I played "Terror from the deep", as I recall many underwater fight scenes. I recall that many times, the Earth has fallen to the aliens under my command...

Welcome back d00d!
I've been getting the urge to return lately too; 'still resisting somehow.

Re: New games suck, I'm back to D2

"The term nostalgia describes a yearning for the past, often in idealized form."
Wikipedia

Yes, gaming development has taken a wrong turn making games with less ambition and more focus on accessibility and a tight, fast, high paced storyline with little focus on maintaining the general feel of older prequels. (CoD excluded, it will never change or improve, though it does have a REALLY fast and narrow singleplayer)

But refraining from the 'feel' of prequels isn't necessarily a bad thing, even if you actually are just hoping for a continuation of your most loved games.

Evolution in game development comes from straying away from the old, safe way of making a certain game and reconsidering every apsect of the prequels to make a new experience with improved and revised game mechanics.

This might all sound like some developer cliché but I think it's actually a good way to make games.
