Wouldn't normal gems be better for that, as you can farm a bunch in classic, and they have no actual use?

Yes that also works, IIRC. I don't think (but don't quote me on it) that you need any specific character level, so you can dump them all on a lvl1 mule with a couple of pairs of RTs and a cube and go for it.

Normal gems and flawless ones always give ilvl 30 with that recipe. Normal gems are for items which already have sockets, and flawless ones are for items which are already magic. Which means that normal/flawless only matters on the first roll, then it's open season.
