Matriarch Larina the Disciple

Here she is: Larina the Disciple. She is #5 in my set sept. The build is a mageazon, focusing on elemental damage from frozen arrow or immolation arrow. I'm quite proud of her, since she never died in hell, although I played on P3 except for act bosses, diablos minions and the WSK. Unfortunately, in NM some frenzytaurs got her once, so she isn't 'perfect'.

She was accompanied by a defiance merc. I had some plans with him, making a nice runeword armour to boost his defense. But I couldn't decide which one, so he kept the standard Shaftstop / Vamp Gaze / Reapers setup.

Now, what can I say about the Disciple set. It is a special set, because none of its parts give special bonuses when you have more than just this one item. Even worse, the general bonuses for more items are bad as well. Only the full set is useful (except LoH which may be used by itself). You get +2 skills, 100 mana and 50 res all. The minor bonuses are 150 defense, 22 poison dmg, 10 str and 10 dex... nothing you can't get elsewhere. For my build I looked for skills, resistances and mana, and there the set fit perfectly.

The mageazon by herself is amazing. My two guardians had a much harder time in hell. This one kills any non-CI foe in almost no time (ok, baal took a while). Immolation arrow has a timer, unfortunately, and can't be fired continuously. But it fried monsters well enough when they assembled around the merc. By the way, the merc is essential: you need something to stop the monsters in order to fry them and I had the idea to make a very high defense one. Well, plans change sometimes, but I kept the defiance merc nonetheless.

I had some trouble to decide which rings to use. I tried several, especially to overcome the huge mana costs. Note: mana leach just doesn't work. The physical part of the attack doesn't hit often enough. I guess the best would be just 2x SoJ.

Gameplay/notes:
  • I made the Silence as part of my effort to get as many RW's as possible. I'm not going for RW grail (that's crazy - I'd never make a Last Wish, e.g.) and I don't want to re-make my Infinity /w self-found runes just b/c I got one Sur in there in a trade and got my Enigma from Liquid_Evil.
  • Silence was a great RW in v1.09 (below Windforce), but made obsolete by v1.10, etc. by the presence of Faith. So nostalgia factor here for me. What's it good for? A Medusa-zon! Slow everything, knock it back, blind it, and make it run away. Nothing gets close.
  • Other gear restriction: she must wear a mask at all times to cover her (hideous) face. I went with gemmed (damage jewels) masks to the Face of Horror (50% monster flee) to Blackhorn's.
  • Also added to the theme: Open Wounds, which paired nicely with the Crow Caw (needed 30% IAS on the armor to hit best non-bugged Strafe frame rate). Everything bled. It was one of the damage items I had to kill PI's. I would have rather used Duress for its better mods, but it lacked needed IAS. One problem: Silence in a bow means you can only use a Hydra Bow or a Crusader Bow. Meaning you need 80% and 90% IAS to hit the appropriate strafe and normal attack frame rates. She had 95%.
  • And that was how it went. Cleglaw's went on as soon as she could equip it and everything was knocked back. Everything was slowed. Once Passion and then Silence were equipped, Anything that came near was knocked back, slowed down, and either blinded or started to run away, sometimes both (so it would blindly walk away). This also means I didn't get a good screen shot of the play action.
  • She was incredibly safe, too. Most everything was killed at, near, of off the edge of the screen.
  • I thought about using a Holy Freeze merc, but it's overkill on the slow and he's often too far away while things get knocked back to make the aura effective. I took might instead. I needed the damage.
  • The merc was set up so be an accessory and not a solo killer. I didn't want to use Reaper's b/c it would overshadow the curses from Silence. Pride itself fits the theme nicely because it blinds and freezes targets.
  • This was definitely an underpowered build. No LoH and no Fort being the two biggest non-bow gear choices I couldn't use due to item restrictions. No biggie. Norm/NM were at /p8 except for bosses, Hell was /p1 to start, the /p3 A2-A5 WSK2 except bosses and Ancients, and /p1 to end.
  • I had to start the Ancients over three times (plus a couple re-rolls), including once when the thrower was down to a few slivers of life because of a hotkey mess-up (where I thought I had Decoy I had TP tomb instead...)
  • PI's weren't so much of a problem, it was just that it took a while to kill with my elemental damage, OW, and magic damage. In A5 Hell I parked plenty of Ghost PI's in the various ice caves.
  • NM Hellforge was Lum, Hell HF was Hel. Can't remember the last time NM's drop was higher up than Hell's. Nothing else of note dropped, a function again of minimal (30%, from Ist in Silence, MF). Meh.
  • I re-spec'd once, to drop from an slvl 27 Valk (hence the +7 total to passives...) to an slvl 17, with the idea of dumping the rest of the skill points in Pierce. The valk got instantly weaker, and I wish I hadn't.
  • I had two skill points remaining. They and the rest of the points would go back to Valk to push her to slvl 27 on casting.
  • I personalized the bow and helm. It felt appropriate in this case.
  • No deaths! One NDE when I got hit by some range attackers (likely archers) in A5 hell, while cursed, and BO just ran out. She has about 980 life without BO. Ouch!

And now for the story...

This was an amazingly fun character to play, except for Baal, which I will discuss later. The basic premise of this character was to get a high damaging bow to fire as fast as possible. I wasn't too concerned with the first shot, but I wanted to get the strafe shots down to 2 fpa (frames per arrow) With the goldstrike, which has 50% inherent IAS on it, I accomplished that. With the shael, two IAS jewels and gloves, I hit the 120% IAS breakpoint for a Hydra bow, which yields a 9/2 strafe speed. Rediculuously fast. 10 arrows (max) go out in 27 frames (1.08 seconds) and 7 (minimum) take only 21 frames to discharge (.86 seconds)

This build leveled very fast all the way through NM. Once I hit 46 from norm baal and equipped the Goldstrike, it was smooth sailing until Hell Baal.

She MP'd most of hell (act 2-4 and 5 to arreat plateau WP). With my setup, I could have done that myself at the cost of additional time. Thanks to all who played in the game a few nights back!

The rest of hell act 5 I vowed not to continue until I had KB. Until that point, I had been in a large party and other people tanked besides my merc/valk/decoy. Once I started solo in the Crystalinne passage, I realized KB is NECESSARY to solo hell.

The first big battle was with the ancients. I re-rolled them three times on account of the FE bug, and the fourth one, while not great, didnt' have the bug.

My merc died quite quickly, but by then the leaper was almost dead, so I continued the fight on the lower corner of the Summit. I used the pillars to fire my 7 arrows at only one ancient at a time, and Korlic was the second to go down after a long time. Then I pushed Mawdawc into a corner and with inner sight and Slow missiles, he died eventually, even though he was Stone Skin.

Getting to the Throne room was quite easy, except for I drew the absolute worst map for worldstone 2. The stairs and WP are on the complete opposite sides of the map. WSK 3 was fast, and then came Baal.

My merc died at least 3 times to Achmel (2nd wave) due to his lighting, him being decrepped and massive poison.

He died again once or twice on Bartuc due to his HF aura.

He survived the fourth wave!

Lister was trouble though. I wasn't that he had horrible mods, its just that the decrep didn't go off that much and he got pounded. I didn't park him, but I did need to revive him a couple times.

Baal was a nightmare though....

If you notice my gear above, I have 0% CB, 0% OW, no Prevent Monster Heal and 0% Deadly Strike, including on my merc. Thus, I emptied at least 600 arrows in the demon (i even switched back to Laying of Hands) and THEN he died, about 20 minutes later. You would think I would have learned my lesson by using a CBmancer to run Baal (70% CB on merc, 50% on 'mancer). But no. I just stood there and shot at Baal. I eventually got smart and bought a flamberge of Vileness (PMH), and wacked him with it. Baal duplicated himself twice, and both times I ran to a corner and picked up gold and waited.

As for my merc v. Baal, I burned about 300k gold resurecting the guy. Eventually with about 1/4 left on Baal's gauge i just screw it and just fired at him.

Overall, she died only a few times, and all were victims of the Lag monster in the MP game. Other than that, she never died in solo play, not even in act 5 hell. I also have never fought glooms/black souls with her....

What I learned:

Valk is amazing
Pure bowazons are viable
You need to incorporate DS, OW, CB, PMH into your gear.

So now Sniper is the 6th Mat/Pat in v1.10. Only a barb to go, and he's in act 3 hell. Expect to see a report and guide on him within the week.

When the character was originally conceived, I was figuring for an MF zon that would primarily run the pits when I felt like it. I wanted to use multishot because I like it far more than strafe.

When questing, I tooled up the IAS to 150 to hit an 8-frame MS. When I return to MFing, I'll likely drop that down to 90 or 100 (to hit the 9-frame breakpoint at 90) and swap out the Treachery, Kira's, Highlord's and one Raven for Skulders (IAS), Harle (IAS), Atma's Scarab (maybe) and a 30% Nagel. The Atma's is up in the air, but I figure I'll try it out.

The character was a blast to play, and twinked to the gills throughout. I ran the gamut on bows used throughout the game. I used a Pluckeye from 7-12; Witherstring from 13-19; Rogue's bow from 20-27; Skystrike from 28-41 (one of the best bows in the game when clvl requirement is taken into consideration); and a Shael'd 199% Lycanders until I got my Windforce at clvl 73.

Once I got to hell, I went to the pits and leveled up to 73. Walking around hell with approximately -60 resists is really damn exciting. That said, if anyone is going to do it, the Zon is fine because of Slow Missiles and Decoy.

Only a few hard areas of the game: I parked two PI/Stone Skin spider uniques in the Spider Cavern because I could not keep up with their life regeneration, even when decrep was on. One of the caverns and WSK1 had identical monsters: Frenzytaurs, PI Ghosts and Vipers. The going was slow and my merc took a few deaths.

NM Hellforge was an Um; Hell was an Io. Baal dropped crap and took a long damn time without CB.

On yeah, all 1.11b and I'm not upgrading.

And now, for some story. DX and Lone_Wolf (for their versions of the dexazon) get credit for the inspiration for this build, as does Hunky_Dory over at the Basin for his ancient guide on the Witchyzon.

But I setout to get as much dexterity as I could with the Witchy, which effectively quadruples your damage. So in reality, I was doing about 6k max physical damage most of the time. As a result, I did hell on /p3 (all except Duriel, Big D and Ancients). The going was slow though, because amp didn't trigger all the time. The added HP didn't help any.

There were so many deaths along the way I don't know where to count. Maybe 10. NM Durance levels took some from charging dolls. Firing a 10 arrow strafe into a charging pack of dolls without having knockback isn't really recommended.

Despite my low resistances, I only died from elemental damage in NM when I had to fight Gloams in Act 4 NM (before clvl 67 and the 40% LR circlet), and I rerolled a Frozen River map because of Gloams and the death they caused.

Many of the deaths were from being surround and having low FHR and low life. I took two consecutive death's in one of the open fields in Act 5 Hell from Firebolt-throwing boss packs.

Tough areas? Aside from the slowness of Act 4-5 hell, Act 3 Hell, in the Spider Cavern was tough. Lots of poison damage, and lots of antidotes. Those Spiders have a lot of HP too. But I prevailed. Durance is Hell presented it's ususal problems. Despite zero death's, there were a few close calls with dolls and a few smacks from Urdars. In the Frozen River in hell, I left my merc dead because the Succubi were making him an expensive pincushion.

Finds? Io from hell Hellforge (DAMN YOU! My last hell HF was a hel, so a minor improvement). Izzy in hell dropped a Boneshade Lich Wand. Diablo dropped a 199% Doombringer, and Baal dropped his ususal green breast plate.

What's next? Leveling my PvP trapper (avatar), and finally working on my lonely IK barb.

A couple of random thoughts on the play:
  1. Running Baal minions @ /p8 is incredibly fun (so long as you can get there quickly). FA demolishes everything and holds them in place. The ML from what I had available was sufficient to keep the bulbs at full, and a potion was generally needed to get through wave 2's skeletons (which went down quickly with exploding arrow, surprisingly).
  2. Norm/NM was /p8 all the way except bosses and Ancients.
  3. Hell was /p1, and most of the way it was one-hit-kills (from either arrow).
  4. Like most bowazons, she is a terrible single-target killer.
  5. Her physical damage was pitiful.
  6. This is the first zon I have ever played for any extensive period without Razortail, and I didn't miss it. I liked having the additional max mana and leech from Gloom's Trap, I guess.
  7. CoH/Enigma > Ormus's Robes from a pure damage perspective. The gains from Ormus are de minimus, and its additional stats are lacking compared to what CoH/Enigma/etc. offers.
  8. This gal was twinked to the gills. Set-up from clvl 42 to clvl 67 (when the circlet and everything else went on) was Lyc's Aim (which actually has more physical damage than Ice)/Vipermagi/P-Crown/similar gloves/+1 zon ammy /w ML, etc.), and I was a little worried in that it was taking more than a few arrows to kill most things in A5 of NM. Turns out I was just missing the Infinity, which like most elemental characters, does wonders.
  9. FA/EA does wonders in tightly packed groups because of pierce plus their AoE exploding damage. Ice's frost nova is a nice touch, as is its Holy Frost aura, but they're more style points than actual damage-doers. Example: Act 3's Flayer Jungle was a riot to walk through.
  10. I wanted dearly to use Nightwing's, but the mods from that circlet were too good to drop it for the additional damage (which wasn't needed for PvM questing; would have been nice for Baal minions to speed them up, at great survivability cost).
  11. Maxing damage on this character, or making it more mobile with Enigma + 70% FCR /w switch, is frustrating because you're trying to fit so many different types of mods into a limited number of slots (and one less b/c of the use of a bow). Facets aren't really an option if you want to hit 8 fpa (75% IAS; 20 of which comes from Ice itself). You need to get ML from somewhere, and your physical damage is quite low to start out (hence HW is a great ammy - skill, IAS, light res), and so SoJ/BKWB/Mara's/caster craft ammy is out. Nightwing's, a great helm, isn't a great option because it needs an IAS socket and it lacks what is otherwise available via a circlet (which is the one non-Ice piece of gear I think drives this character).

I have always loved Strafe. I have also made a lot of bad, failed characters. Really. A lot.

When Pindle was nice enough to drop me a Windforce a couple of months ago, I decided that I might as well try to actually make one right, so I headed to the build guides. And I read the strafer ones. And promptly forgot all about them, but this time I managed to end up with a viable Pit runner anyway.

It didn't hurt that I don't mind to twink like a mofo. This lady was sporting her Arctic Gear at level 2 thanks to a large stash of +Strength and +Dex grand charms. The cold damage was great and all, but the most fun I had the entire game was at level 28 when I started using Skystrike -- gogo Meteor goodness. Level 6 Meteor actually puts quite the hurt on the monsters in normal difficulty.

Normal and Nightmare at /p8 were a breeze thanks to the massive twinkage. I actually played through to the Hell Inner Cloister before I remembered to switch back to /p1 (I'm rather impatient in Hell). The sizeable punch of the Windforce along with a super-tanky Valk really kept me breezing through the first 2 acts without any problem.

Act 3 brought on her first of 2 deaths. I had been using my Decoy as a scout to draw the pack of flayers, but started to get a little lazy and a little cocky. I was jogging along at a pretty good pace when I crossed the invisible line separating the Spider Forest from the Great Marsh. And of course we all know what lives in the Great Marsh: ridiculous Gloam boss packs that are like multi-shot, cursed, extra fast, death enchanted, or something. I swapped out for a Kira's Guardian and the rest of the act went without incident. Had a couple of near misses with undead dolls but survived.

Act 4 went much easier than expected. HF dropped me a Lem -- could be worse, I guess. The valk and I left our dead moron 2 steps inside the Chaos Sanctuary and cleared the rest very quickly. I brought Alhizeer back to the party for the fight against Big D, but even that fight was over before I knew it. I had to dodge 2 lightning hoses, but the whole fight took about 20 seconds. I would have been more excited about his drop if I didn't already have a Lenymo, but still seeing a gold Sash from Hell Diablo did make me smile.

Act 5 was slow going. I had learned my lesson from the gloams, though, and was very careful with the Decoy as we advanced through the foothills all the way to the Glacial Trail. I love how strafe finds the doors and towers just as dangerous as the cat-people chucking spears at me.

I feel bad because the Glacial Trail is the only time through the whole adventure that I rerolled monsters. I'll admit that I just didn't feel like dealing with the PI Frenzytaurs. After rescuing Anya, I dealt with the bugged snakes on the way to Nihlathak as penance. The bug didn't really affect me since I was easily able to stand still and Strafe away. I never actually saw Nihlathak, but I guess I killed him since I got the quest reward.

It took me 2 tries to get past the Ancients. On the first attempt, I was done in by a single double-throw. That did not bode well for any further attempts. I got lucky on my second try, however, and was able to park whirlwind at the bottom while my Valk and I ran to the top with the leaper and the thrower. I spent the next several minutes running back and forth between columns, firing the occasional guided arrow while my Valk wandered around and poked things as she could. Once the leaper went down, I felt like I was in pretty good shape. My Valk was able to tank the thrower while I finished him off. Whirlwind died very quickly after that. Fortunately, none of them had spawned stone skin.

I don't even remember what spawned on WSK1, but it went easily. WSK2 had Rat Men and Poison Mages. WSK3 had the fabulous combination of OK's and Frenzytaurs. It made me very glad to be playing a ranged character. The throne room had the most bizarre combination I've ever seen -- Gloams and Gloams. There was *1* Vampire about halfway to the throne and *1* Hoaradrim Ancient in the actual throne room. Everything else was a Gloam. Baal's minions went down -- surprisingly easily. During the fight with Baal I had a close call with some festering appendages, but they and their master fell like all the rest.

M'avina's set gives a lot of +skills and +20% damage to cold attacks. Freezing arrow is the obvious choice of primary attack. For a backup, I wanted to try out a much-maligned skill, and the +skills helps there as well. Now that I have used it through Hell, I must say that Immolation arrow gets a bad rap mainly because it cannot hold a candle to Freezing arrow, Lightning Fury or Charged Strike. On its own, it's a very powerful skill. 1.8k damage, with pierce and an area of effect at 25 frames per attack. It combines well with the amazon's minion skills as well -- monsters attack the decoy and the valkyrie, not you. In combination with other skills the character possesses, I'd rate it a more powerful skill than Frozen Orb, which has a 1.4 second timer, lowish damage but chills everything sight and takes up fewer skill points.

Nothing to report from normal and nightmare. Early hell was easy: most monsters died in a couple of hits. At the end of act 1, I noticed that I did not have CBF anywhere in my gear. At the time I set aside the gear for this character, I didn't have a spare Raven Frost, so I threw in one of my SoJs, intending to replace that or my other ring with a raven frost when the time came. And I forgot all about it until the end of act 1 hell. I couldn't remember being chilled at all in act 1, so I decided to hold out a bit longer and see how often I got chilled in act 2. What began as a frivolous exercise soon became a serious challenge as I actively avoided getting hit at all. First monster to chill Gaewyn in Hell: a slinger with built-in cold damage and a piercing attack, in the Frigid Highlands. This is a safe character :) But after that, my play got sloppy and I was chilled a few times in act 5.

The later acts took a while as monster hit points steadily increased, but Gaewyn faced no real challenges until the ancients. After a few rerolls, she found an acceptable set of mods, isolated the ancients and killed Talic. When fighting Madawc, she looked for her potions on the ground and noticed that they were gone. The ancients had stolen the lot! What was worse, her spare arrows were gone too. And magic arrow didn't often enough to counter regeneration. Ouch, reroll. This was a serious setback. With freezing arrow heavily reliant on the booze (aka blue potions), there was no way this was going to work. Two options: rent-an-insight-merc, or use crushing blow. The former alternative would have been grossly unfair on her trustworthy companion, so crushing blow it was. Damien picked up the BKSC, Gaewyn used Fleshripper herself and it was easy pickings after that.

The Frozen River had a nasty monster roll: ghosts (cannot be frozen), gloams (cannot be frozen) and CI witches (cannot be frozen) with built-in amplify damage. Fortunately, they are all low hit point critters and could be dispatched easily.

I wanted to socket the bow with a Nef, but never got around to it. Gaewyn worked around that, so here's Gaewyn's lazy amaon's guide to knockback:
1. Freeze monsters in place
2. Take a step back

This has the added advantage of knocking back a screen-full of monsters at once.

Gaewyn didn't die even once *cue warm, fuzzy feeling*. She had a near-death experience in the worldstone keep, level 1, where right after entering, her troops were assaulted by cursing vile witches and a frenzytaur pack that couldn't be frozen. The merc and the valk died quickly but Gaewyn cast a portal and escaped before hit recovery lock happened. One of the ancients' rolls had amp + fanaticism + holy shock + conviction. In the fraction of a second that it took Gaewyn to size up the situation and cast a portal, the merc, valk and decoy were one-shotted. That could *easily* have been a death.

The act 5 mercenary was fun to use. Doombringer is such an awesome weapon that it made Damien very sturdy. Damien could wade into a group of amp'ing witches and stay alive, which is more than you could say about the act 2 morons. Doombringer had an important part to play in his survival:

Here you have it. The goddess of hunting made matriarch. I've had a strafer for a long time. And i really like strafe. But with the debate of strafe vs. multi i just had to try the other side of things.
Thus Artemis uses multishot. My strafer used magic arrow as a backup for PI's. This works pretty good most of the time. Only downside is she runs AT atm and some of those zombietypes are magic immune. So if they're also stoneskin i'm in trouble. Therefore i chose frozen arrow as a backup on this one.

Playing the game:

Not much to say about norm and NM. Twinking my way through. MS with some arctic pieces did very nice early on.

Died a few times in NM because i wanted to rush through to fast. Other than that things died, and they did it fast.

Even in hell the killing was smooth. Only 2 places where i had some trouble. First was the crystalline passage. It was crowded with those frenzytaur monsters, but there they were PI. I was very happy that i could still freeze them. Ran into 2 bosspacks with both and extra strong boss. The first pack i almost killed completely. Only one minion and the boss left. So i'm freezing the minion. Then suddenly i hear the boss teleport. I don't see him anymore so i think: ok he's tele'd some way back, out of my sight. Turned out i was wrong. He tele'd right behind me and killed me before i realised what was happening. The second pack wasn't that hard on me, but killed my merc several times (why don't these bosses attack my valk instead:undecided:).

After that i picked up some speed again. No trouble with ancients. Just running around and using GA until 2 of them were down. Then the last decides to attack my merc and valk so then it was just shooting some FA's and sometimes GA to leech back mana.

The WSK was easy. The second hard spot in hell was in the throneroom. It had gloams, OK's and unravelers. Because i'm playing ranged my fade wasn't active most of the time. And with some gloams shooting at me that really hurt. Even more because some OK decided my resists were still to high and cast lower resist. Only got out of that one by pushing a full juvie just in time. Then using GA and shoot around the corner.

From the waves only the second one was trouble. One of the OK's in the throne got ressurected by them several times and so my merc died 2 more times due to IM here. Other then that i just froze them and that was it. Even for Lister. Baal gave a little trouble because he cloned himself before my merc could slow him with his kelpie. Still not that hard though.

Finds:

From forges Ko and Pul. Other than that, she was pretty lucky. Found a shako, skullders, 5% res all sc and a nat's mark. Not sure if this was all, but these came to mind.

General remarks:

- Something i was afraid of was the 3/4 damage when using MS. As it turned out i didn't have to worry. Maybe with a not so good bow it would have caused trouble, but with a WF you do more then enough damage.
- I really liked strafe before, but i think i have switched to the other side. A lovely sight seeing all these arrows. No strafelock. And good damage.
- The treachery was nice for IAS, but hardly did anything for my resists. I just didn't get hit enough. Which means that when it was needed, it wasn't working.
- My merc died more frequently then i expected. Maybe a few extra lvl's will cure that.
- Her future is first some lvling. Probabely in AT's. Hopefully maxing cold arrow and penetrate (and some more points in MS, if i ever get that far). After that she'll go beef-hunting.
- Next project: unknown. But for now i'm gonna continue my tourny pally.

Gameplay:

Twinking early on. She started to get really powerfull once I got FA. From the end of normal until act 4 of NM most things were killed with one or two shots (at p8). The monsters were toast so to speak (well frozen toast anyway). After that it slowed down a bit (but not much) until the end of NM when just before Baal i could equip the full set. This gave me another great power boost. After that went to hell. Still very powerful. Only problem is there are more cold immunes. So I was required to switch to strafe more often. Luckily strafe was better at killing the CI's then I thought it would.
Didn't have any real trouble in hell at all. The ancients even went down without me using a single potion for either myself or my merc. There was a lot of running involved because Korlic wasn't interested in my merc or my valk. He just kept coming for me. Those two kept the whirler busy (I parked the thrower somewhere) while i kept running and firing guided arrows at Korlic (he was CI). After he died I pumped whirly full of ice. Shortly after the same happened to the last ancient.
All in all it was one of the easiest times I had. Did have 3 deaths, all my fault and mostly because I was trying to mat her asap. First was in NM in the kurast sewers. Encountered some dolls so i retreated behind my merc. But while passing him he just killed one and the deathexplosion took me out. The second was in the ancients way. I went around a corner and a bosspack of razorspines was waiting for me. Because of all the dodging my char did I couldn't move or use a potion till i died. Then died once more trying to get my body back. After losing my merc a few times and numerous valks i picked up my bodies and continued.
Forges were disastrous (is that a word?) shael in NM which was made up for by a monster near the forge who dropped an um. But then in hell it went wrong again, an io was all i got there.

Pro's:
- She's very powerfull. Even in hell in the WSK I could kill some monsters with one or two FA's (like skelly mages and flayers)
- With just the set you're resists are positive even in hell
- You just look great with the set
- Frozen monsters can't hurt you

Con's:
- No aura for decoy. I mean WTF. I have a shiny valk, but the decoy who should look exactly like me doesn't.
- Even with insight merc and some manaleech and mana per kill you still need to use pots sometimes.

As you can see she doesn't reach last strafe BP because with the gear I needed for that she wouldn't have max resists and I'm a big fan of max resists :) especially on chars that have less than 800 life :)

I didn't die once but merc died like 50 times when I entered WSK. I guess I need more practice using slow missiles and Decoy.

She didn't find anything valluable. Hell hellforge gave her a KO. Bleh.

She will continue to run the WSK I guess. With the proper use of Decoy and Slow Missiles I think she will be safe. Only if she could kill Baal little faster...

It was a hard job for me especially after having a MeteOrb Sorc. This char was fantastically unlucky with her drop. I think, she had only Bloodfist from the unique items and Ist from the Hellforge(hell). Nothing better. I'm glad that i've finished her. The idea of the build is good, but the char is not very strong.

Solo'ed all game except Frozen River. (gloams=instant death, at least for this char) The low resists weren't much of a problem otherwise as long as Valkyrie was in front taking hits for me. Had to reroll Hell Ancients about ten times because of FE or other extra nasty mods. Baal took a long time but had no deaths. Baal dropped Steel Pillar. Comments:

The first time that I put so little in vit and neglected resistances. Normal and NM was easy , even on p8. For hell, most of the game was done in p8 except act 4 and 5, which was done on p3 and p1. I got anxious to finish her up. :D

She died a total of six times, which all of which was avoidable. Once in NM act 5 by infidels, once in hell chaos by a spawner while cursed, twice to hell diablo's fire attack
and 2 to FE ancients.

The control provided by silence was superb. Monsters are either blinded or running away in fear. Damage was lowish , 669-1971 with might aura from merc. but her gear wasn't completed yet and is still liable to increase.

PIs are settled by a HelShael Hellrack. This usage of the hellrack gave me the inspiration for my next zon: a non-burrito crossbow zon.

She shall run hell pits for the rest of her career, for the MFO. In all and all, a very fun build. Next up should be my convicted zealot, my fireball templar and a LF/PJ zon.

Twinked on Hsaru's + Berzerker sets at L3, Sigons at L6 (the shield came at L7), Skewer of Krinz @ L10, then bows from L18 on. Valkyrie basically cleared NM for me, and then turned into a 5000+ life meat shield in Hell. The only hard part was adjusting to Hell where I dies to a FE/MSLE boss and then to a cursed/LE boss in The Pits within 10 minutes of each other. As you can see, my gear leaves a lot to be desired, but the Death bow +gloves + GSA made up for a multitude of sins. I used Heartcarver to good effect in NM, slicing up Duriel and Mephisto with it. Once I could equip Tal's mask it was smooth sailing, as the double leach and +life/mana gave me a significant comfort margin. Hell Ancients were easy, though the did take 18 full rejuves. Died twice to Baal's manaflame cone, then regeared to Mav's Belt, Aldur's Advance, Rattlecage, +2 skills ammy and Guilded Arrow/Crushing Blow'd him to death easily from an angle behind a pillar--thanks for the advice 1.07 guys!

I never rerolled monsters, just used "Death" + IA to deal with PIs. That bow was my primary weapon for most of NM and all of Hell with the exception of the Arreat Plateau areas where Imps are everywhere. I wasn't looking to hit the uber breakpoints and topped out at 80% IAS, but the CtC flee + knockback +Ice Arrow & knockback from the merc made for a very safe build. If I hadn't have been in such an hurry in A1, I think I would have only died twice to Baal. The "Death" bow crushed Baal's minions and the Chaos Sanctuary inhabitants without remorse. Even though it is low damage, the bad guys never get close enough for it to matter. Highly recommended to any 1.07 Bowazon who can give up a Lem. The name comes from my favorite Judas Priest song "Rapid Fire" (though I only like it because of the High on Fire cover version).

Thanks again to the 1.07 crowd for helping me so much since 9/07. Up next will be my Claws of Thunder/Shadow Tree Assassin.

So this was not really with that strong Strafe after all. I wanted to see instead, that how strong that Valkyrie really can get. She was pretty sturdy. Original plan was to use my Cta GMB on switch for Strafing, but after testing it a little bit I re-spec'd char this way. Can kill CI monsters on P8, but it's a little bit slow. Fishy zon with LF and FA would be faster clearer overall I'm sure. I've seen some use those Fire arrows used as an immunity solver also.

This zon also became my first character to actually use that recent Tyrael's Might. Mind you that 'Um' in it won't be the final socket, but let's see what I need in it for the next time I use it... I used CoH before lvl 84. Behind the decision to use Tyrael's was that (besides to use it at least some) I though it might look cute with Holy Freeze aura and Nightwing's. I was right, this Amazon was really blue with that outfit.

Enough points in Pierce to have full effect with Razortail. Points in Critical Strike to give almost 100% chance to double damage after taking into account the DS from Highlord's.


Journey

It's been so long since I originally made this character that I have no idea how normal/nm went. I suspect that I leveled her as a LF/CS zon, as I already had used one re-spec when I started playing her again. Levels 81-84 (basically whole Act 2) was made with a different re-spec. There was no Valkyrie, but I had maxed Strafe instead. After the Tyrael's there was a need for a stat re-allocation, so I decided to try out a really strong Valkyrie for a CI solution (along with Mercenary).

Acts 2, 3 and 4 were played /players 8 all the time. No problems whatsoever, but it was act 4 when those cold immunes started to play an irritating role. I wanted to prove myself however and didn't lower the players settings, and killed most of them with strafe and my two helpers. Everything non CI melts really quickly.

Knowing Act 5 and its possible monster spawns I knew that it would take just about forever. I wanted to get this done today so I ran through it with /players 1. Act 4 took long enough, and I proved that CIs are doable, but taking a long time. It was a little bit too easy that way, but seeing what I came across, I believe there could've been some major problems with the highest settings.

There was no deaths, and not really even close calls. Don't get too up, close and personal with monsters and then this is a really safe char. Souls could provide a problem. There weren't any besides Throne, but it was /P1 then. I had some resistance charms ready for swapping but didn't need to do it.

Stormtree and the gang. He felt a little sturdy. There was quite a few Flayers before this, those are unbreakable CI too. They might have been a problem if I couldn't slow them down with my HF aura. I killed these after I had visited Flayer's Dungeon, and already explored LK. At first I ran past Stormtree and went for the WP instead.

Ahh, easy. HF+Frozen Nova procs + FA splash still freezing them all. Team VV going strong. Strafe not so strong. As you can see, I have two rows of mana all the time. Most of the time monsters dropped enough mana potions to keep it up, as well as enough arrows.

CS wasn't bad. Oblivion Knights could be taken care of with Strafe & Valky & Vikhyat. I ran a lot around dodging their missiles.

Last thoughts

So it appears that this kind of an FA zon variant is doable too. Probably one would like to go LF/FA for even more power. Or use one of those fire arrows as a backup. But all in all, I can recommend trying an FA zon, and especially if you have runes for 'Ice'. Such a wonderful little bow. She is sucking that mana pool really really fast down without a 1.07 MPK ring. If you haven't one, I'd maybe test Silkweaves and have some mana leech in the ring instead then. My dream gloves for this build would probably be an 1.07 caster craft with 3B&C/20IAS/MAEK/Res/xx...

In the future I'm planning to run a little Travi with her. For that I will unfortunately be going to give up wearing that beautiful blue armor and put on Enigma instead. Valkyrie won't be necessary there, and I don't want to have D/A/E anyway when running an area where Hydras are spawn.

Abyssinia is the first Strafer I have played, and was a great deal of fun. From the start, I planned not to take D/A/E and Valkyrie, but to save skill points for them if I deemed them necessary. I wanted to avoid the D/A/E bug with Strafe. Not having played a Strafer before, I didn't know how serious it would be, and I have nothing to compare with so I can't recommend one way or another taking those skills. I had intended to take Decoy and max CA/FA, but in the end neither seemed essential and by that point I just decided to hoard unspent skill points.

Abyssinia did suffer more deaths than I would have liked, though almost always it was due to lack of caution on my part. As long as I fired first, moved later and kept my merc ahead she was fine. Perhaps if I had taken the skills mentioned above some deaths would have been avoidable, but mostly they were because of over-aggressiveness on my part rather than a lack of utility skills on hers.

The only notable finds were the decent Gheed's she carried to the end and a Stone of Jordan (found in NM Durance).

The merc died about 3 times to Baal's minions, but Baal was easy as usual.
This one has been quite fun to play despite strafe being such a brainless skill. Putting FA on left-click has saved her life many times despite having only 2 points in it, like when I accidentally run into a monster!

I think I'm going to do some runs with this character now, I was thinking Pits/Pindle/Baal, when I get the runes to up the WWS for PIs this will expand to Pits/Countess/Meph/Pindle/Baal. What do you think of the current equip for this run? OK/should be changed?

Artemis was the Hellenic goddess of the hunt and she often was depicted as a huntress carrying a bow and arrows.

From what I remember, Artemis was entirely as a Strafezon using Witchwild String for most of her career, only using Windforce after making Matriarch. After Matriarch, she went on to run various areas and put points into Multishot. My GoMule readouts are for her at present, but I think she is wearing most of her original gear. She had a good roll on Harmony (probably rerolled several times), although I seem to recall it being a superior base.
