Matriarch Maiden - Plague Javelin/Charged Strike Amazon with Magic Items

Introduction

I've been having this idea to do some magic/rare/craft only characters. This is the first that made it to the end. The build was inspired by a Lancer's Maiden Javelin of Replenishing I found, and the last incentive to start it already was when I wanted to name that Maiden's Maiden Javelin :p

So Maiden was started last summer, but she was put to a hold for some months. I have formed a habit of having many characters in different phases of the game. At least there's always many to choose from.


Build

Plague Javelin was chosen as the main killer. After that I bumped Charged Strike, but decided to forget all about Lightning Fury. In the gear I tried to aim for a decent amount of +life, resistances and skills. I also gave FRW some emphasis because I figured there would be some running around.

Mercenary was an Act II Might dude with the meanest stick I could give him. And yes, also the mercenary ran around with only magic items. Have to say, I was pretty lucky with that weapon of his; I haven't picked up a lot of blue polearms in the end, and that dropped after I had decided to do a magic only char and merc.

I had two pair of boots. Most of the time I used that 40FRW/40CR one. There were some other items also, but I never used them. I think I managed to put together all around nice set of items. Inventory wasn't totaly full as I usually have it. These are mana hungry characters, and I was drinking both mana and healing potions all the time. And yeah, I chose to put some non-magic things in the sockets. :rolleyes:


Journey

Not much to tell about the early playing. I think there was a Raven with a Claw. Stuff died.

For the NM I put some Strafer gear for fun. As far as I remember it was smooth sailing. By the end of Act 5 in NM I had already made the switch towards my end build. Let's take a look how the Hell went with some screenshots:

Preserved Deads took a while to kill. I think they have quite good Lightning Resistance. I was starting to weighing to get Lower Resistance wand on switch. Never tried it out so TP staff it was then to the end.. Not used a lot, but few times it helped. LR wand would've helped probably more, still.

There's some fresh air. Travincal was not bad. Throwing some javelins and then taking the councils for a happy walk around the Travi until they died. I played /players 3 for the first three acts and then p1 for the last two.

No problems whatsoever during this Act. Met some noble man here, judging by his name. He was rather hostile however.

Three little green men. Plague Javelin is bulletproof against Ancients. Almost too easy. Throw, run, throw, run. Repeat until all dead.

These were taken down mostly with CS. Manaburn was little annoying, as usual. No major problems during the earlier waves. WSK 2 had Souls, which were dual immune. Skipped most of that level, as I found my way down early. There could have been some real problems, I think. Also Frozen Tundra was horrible with all kind of immunes. Archers and cursing witches are not nice combo for a this character either, but thanks to my nice FRW I could dodge them enough. Lots of poison immunes in Act V in general. CS made short work of the most, though.


All in all this character worked out just the way I thought it would. I have been playing a lot of melee characters lately, so this was quite refreshing to play in that regards. Couldn't help but feel a little gutless with that much running away from monsters though :D

Distracted too many monsters, so not enough LR proc, so not used. Also, a merc probably would have died a lot since her killing speed was incredibly slow at times. Finally, it didn't fit the theme.

Beginnings:
She was conceived over the course of several months. I first wanted to build a PDR spearazon of some kind (I'd heard of the D/A/E buginess but never experienced it) after gambling a perfect Valkyrie's amulet of life everlasting. However, I was short a few pieces of gear, and have never been into trading. So the idea languished until I saw THC's mat thread (see below) and something clicked. Then I found a second Nature's peace and started socketing. In four attempts at socketing magical PDR circlets I got only one socket each time.:scratchchin: Finally, I just went for it.

She went through Normal/NM as a plain old furyzon. Ran NM Baal on /p8 to level 76 to put on Medusa's. Then re-gear (directly to end-game gear, with minor charm fiddling along the way) and respec before starting hell.

Tactics and Observations:
Her main skill was plague javelin (a nice fat cloud of pestilence--the four-second cooldown was slightly annoying but worth the trade-off. Poison javelin was hard to hit things with and doesn't have nearly as much dps). Lightning strike was used regularly, and some charged strike for stragglers. In general, loosely packed baddies were most easily dealt with using lightning strike, closely packed with plague javelin.

Her best strategy was to use plague javelin and try to get just surrounded enough to proc lower resist, but not enough to get chewed up. (Decoy was useful in some situations.) Plague javelin also requires little mana, and, not having CBF, jabbing things with CS was a tedious proposition a lot of the time.

Occasionally she used weird strategies like positioning to take arrows from some archers through a doorway while attacking other monsters.

The best areas had archers and swarming physical attackers. The beetle guys were fun to take out, and, with lucky monster spawns, much of A5 was a breeze.. The worst areas had elemental attackers and heavy hitters like urdars and your badder varieties of frenzytaur, which dropped her life rapidly with minimal chance to proc LR. Act 4 was the worst, as OKs were predictably annoying. Her most harrowing battle was against Frozenstein, who was cursed and extra fast, putting her in continuous hit recovery. Since she was also frozen, she was too slow to do anything but drink potions. Finally, LR went off and she was able to slip out a single PJ, which finished him off quickly.

She did suffer a few insta-deaths: against cursed ancients, while being mobbed by Lister's pack (that was dumb), and immediately after the first screenshot, in the CS.

In Conclusion:
win: PDR w/ Medusa's Gaze LR proc - with the right monster spawn, it's wicked.
win: plague javelin with lower resist - awesome.
lose: mass integer PDR as invincibility - it's not even close to that (with 106 pdr, anyway).

Well, what can I say? LF and CS ripped through pretty much anything they worked on (some stuff like Act 5 guest claw vipers did last for a little bit, but according to Arreat Summit those have 90% LR, so... <.<). I found Plague Javelin to be very much PvM-usable, partly because I could switch to the bow and try some slowing/wound opening while the poison worked and I would guess also partly because I "only" had +8 to javelin skills so I didn't have truly terrible lightning damage. The first 3 acts in Hell were simple enough (I almost had a bit of fun with Conviction Brem Sparkfist, except my resists are so bad that Conviction does very little :laugh: ). Act 4...I got gloams in Planes of Despair, almost full LI spawn in City of the Damned, but smooth sailing after that. Act 5 had pretty nice spawns for the most part, aside from LI frenzytaurs and tainted in Ancient's Way, but I found the stairs up to the ancients before some Fanatic bull boss pack caught up, so it was ok :laugh: .

The Ancient's themselves took some time, but very little danger. I respawned them to only get Madawc LI, but that turned out to be a waste of time since I fought them with PlJ and GA. When it was down to just the leaper, I let the valk distract him and then backstabbed with CS, but I forgot he was cold enchanted and died in the death nova <_<. Got the quest completion, though, so whatever >_>.

WSK spawns were fairly nice too (only LIs were zealots on floor 1 and scarabs on floor 2). Baal had fun with my low life and resists. I think he built up 5 corpses at one point, after which I gave up on being stubborn with CS and resorted to PlJ/GA again, which took me to an easy victory.

Future plans? I like how she did running Pindleskin, and while I haven't tried hell cows yet, that's an option too. I also have most of the suggested gear in the SP PvP guide for a poison zon, so I might do some of that too (in fact, I tried to build this off of LE's Sidewinder guide, only with LF instead of LB to be more PvM-friendly). Just need to spend those stat points a bit, huh? <.<

Oh, almost forgot. No really good item drops, HF gave Lem.

Well, she was a blast! I'd heard about javazons being pretty tough before for PvP, and I found it even more true for PvM. I wanted to try making a character without using a guide, though I've seen that there's at least one other out there (one by Nightfish), but I bet there will be some differences. While trying to decide between bow or jav skills I looked at all the skills and synergies, and couldn't believe how much poison she'd be able to dish out! Well, I didn't figure for the time it takes her to deliver a full dose as well as resistances in Hell, so a lot of times the Plague had to go on the back burner while the LF came out to play...and boy, did it ever play. I wanted a second skill in lighting for poison immunes, and LF was perfect because it didn't have to be synergized and left me several more points for playing with. I had no idea how powerful it was based on what was shown on the skill calc, but when that much electricity's being delivered to 20 monsters at the same time it's freakin' awesome, and it usually killed very fast!!

I had Plague Javelin fully maxed about halfway through NM, and it pretty much rocked there. After maxing LF later I wasn't sure what to do with the other points. I started to put them all in Penetrate and Pierce, but something told me to have a little fun and try a Valkyrie, and wow, I was impressed! I've heard the word "tank" describe mercs before, but if a merc can be a tank, a sturdy Valk can be a battleship! 😃 With Valk maxed and 5 hardpoints in Decoy her life is 3,256 and her resistances are far from being maxed out. She died about once for every 20 times my Might merc bit the dust. She didn't do a ton of damage, but it was respectable. When I'd run low on gold to revive my merc I'd just leave him dead and take her along for a while, and she'd draw the monsters like flies and I'd poison or fry them to death. Once she took on 3 Champion Bloodlords alone in Hell and they couldn't kill her—I think Valks might be a bit overdone.

Normal and NM were played on /players 8 except for the Act bosses. Act V in Hell was on /players 5 most of the time, and /players 8 for The Pit and Ancient Tunnels while leveling up. After getting to level 82 or 83 I decided it was time to finish her, so I went /players 1 the rest of the way, though she could've gone higher.

The rough spots in Hell were mainly just the Act bosses. Even on /players 1 it took quite a while to bring them down, and I was surprised to find that Plague Javelin was much more effective than LF on them. Hmm.

Deaths and NDEs—well, I'm definitely not an HC player but I don't like to die and lose experience—but I did die along the way, mostly in Hell. Gloams and Burning Souls were usually what got me. I was reluctant with having Larzuk socket stuff (only gave my Merc a socket for a shael in his Reaper's Toll). I didn't add pTopazes or pDiamonds to anything because I didn't think UpYours would be a great MFer, and I didn't twink much top gear on her. Guess I'm funny, but I'm kind of cheap when it comes to Larzuk's sockets. ;)

She found a few regular set items and uniques along the way, but her best find to me was a 4 socket monarch shield in The Pit...I've always wanted a Spirit shield, and now I finally have one! She found another 4 socket monarch in LK I think later, and that one's safely in my GoMule stash for one of my Sorcs.

For runes she found an El when she killed Hell Countess (LOL) and a Lum at Hell Helforge. That was about it other than a few Shaels and Amns, etc.

Future plans for her are to take her out for a spin when I need to relieve stress—that Lightning Fury is really cool. 😁 She can run The Pit and AT well at /players 8, and I think she'll do well with Pindle also (haven't killed him yet), so I might stick my Skullders on her at some point and give that a try. She did fair with Hell Andy, but she was entirely too slow with Meph and Baal.

Oh, nearly forgot. I don't remember fighting a single lightning/poison immune monster the whole time.

She was very strong and I enjoyed playing her very much. Normal & NM on /p8, Hell on /p1. She had the usual problems with LI's, but jab & merc usually got the job done. In late Hell, I made her a peace armour and the valk worked wonders, keeping those LI monsters from swarming.

Toughest fight was with the ancients (no surprise). Possibly more than 15 tries. In the end she defeated them easily after the first one fell.

Well, I decided to do a Javazon when my first Titan's Revenge dropped from a MF run on NM Mephisto. I started this character up awhile back but didn't do much with her at first. This character was slow to get started as she plodded along through normal, but as soon as I hit lvl 30, things picked up quick. And the only end game equipment I didn't have when I first started this character was the Stormshield and Bonehew, so it made things a bit easier to plan out. She found the Stormshield in the jungles of A3 Hell. Surprisingly enough, Baal spit up another Stormshield for her when it was all said and done.

In large part to my equipment, this character wasn't all that hard to mat. If it wasn't LI, lightning fury usually made quick work of it, and if a monster was LI, the Demon's Arch on switch, a Bonehew-wielding merc, and a valk made quick work of it. And this character rarely received any damage. Having D/A/E at 50%, blocking at 75%, high resists, and a defiance merc made this a very safe character to play. Even the Hell Ancients didn't prove to be very difficult for this character.

About the only thing I would change on this character would be not to waste the points on getting Fend. I decided to try it to see if it worked better than jab, and IMO, it didn't. I would have put those points into pierce, instead. Charged Strike is an awesome skill (Thanks to those that led me in that direction when I asked about it.) that worked wonders in dealing with bosses and single monsters.

TL;DR Section
As the thread title subtly suggests, Medusa was created for Liquid_Evil's evil Diablo Character Vanity Challenge. As such, she was restricted first by a theme (Gods and Mythology in my case), second by the skills she could use (primary damage had to be either Poison or Cold), and third by the equipment she could use (at least one Set combination, but no complete sets; a Basinet or Great Helm type helm; and an item with a Dol or a rare jewel - I have both). Alas, I ahd only just started Hell when time ran out, so I elected to take my medicine and sport an ugly dog avatar (the punishment for not winning), and take my time to properly complete the character. In doing so, I was able to go through Hell on /players8, rather than do a mad p1 rush. She handled p8 with ease. The only real issues were the annoying number of dual immunes in Act 5 (mostly skeletons and gloams).

When I saw the theme, the first thing I thought of was the item Thundergod's Vigor. The second was everyone's favourite shield, Medusa's Gaze. Then my very limited knowledge of ancient mythology ran out. I considered going with my far more extensive knowledge of Christianty and making a holy Paladin, but in the end went with attempting to find some way of making a viable Medusa's Gaze wearing character. A nice little leap of logic took me from Medusa having snakes for hair to snakes being venomous to poison damage to naming my character Medusa. This had the added benefit of being able to wield a Medusa's Medusa's Gaze. Poison damage suggested either a Plaguezon, a Daggermancer, or a Venomsin. Naming the character Medusa ruled out the Necro, and the prospect of Lightning Fury as a backup skill ruled in the Zon. Considering I've never gotten a Javazon apst normal before, there was an extra motivation for this idea. (In case anyone is wondering, I couldn't think of any way of incorporating Medusa's turn-people-to-stone gaze, other than the name of the shield. If only this was D1 (good old Stone Curse)...)

For the item requirements, I used a Sigon's Guard socketed with a rare jewel to satsify the rare jewel or Dol requirement until Chains of Honor became available, then kept it for the +skill until Medusa's became available. The 'Lore' Basinet repalced Sigon's Visor (which was one of 2 S/U helms allowed - the other being Darksight Helm) at level 27. Sigon's boots were worn up until Telling of Beads became available to satisfy the set item requirement. Telling of Beads and Rite of Passage were chosen for the +skill and the decent FRW, and because the other Tarng's items were out of the question. Chains of Honor was a no-brainer. Skills, resists, and it has a Dol (thanks for that requirement, Liq 👍). Likewise Thundergod's Vigor - boost to max light resist, light absorb, powers up LF, and one of the two items that popped into my head when I saw the theme. I ran NM Baal to reach level 76 and equip Medusa's Medusa's before starting Hell. As it turns out, I had a rare jewel with 30 Fire resist that I could stick in it, so instead of Dol or rare jewel, I could do both. Overriding all this were the billion style points from calling my character Medusa and being able to run around with a Medusa's Medusa's Gaze. Thanks Liq for the encouragement to complete this often overlooked quest. As it turned out, the ctc Lower Resist actually helped against the aforementioned dual immunes (I think I got every possible dual immune spawn). Titan's is the bleedingly obvious choice for any Javazon, Trang's picked itself for the +25% Poison Skill Damage, and SoJ for the +skill. CtA + Spirit on switch to make an overpowered character even more overpowered, a rare ring for resists, as many skillers as I could cram in, and a bunch of SCs for resists and life complete the picture.

Skill-wise, the priority was Plague Javelin and Poison Javelin. Once both of those were maxed, Lightning Fury, Valkyrie, Pierce, and Decoy became the focus. I used the poison skills exclusively until Act 5 NM, when an annoying number of Poison Immunes forced me to bring the smackdown with LF. 1 point was added to Jab as an afterthought so I could help out with the dual immunes (or pretend I was helping out). The Holy Freeze merc was chosen to keep everything standing still for the PJ cloud. I didn't see a Frenzytaur in Hell, so safety was very rarely an issue.

Overall, I enjoyed this character a lot. Liq's restrictions barely handicapped her at all. I can't think of too many gear changes that would be worth the bother without any restrictions. She beat Hell on p8, which says it all about how powerful she was. A pity I wasn't able to finish her and do a write-up for the tourney, but I really wanted to fisnish her off properly after all the planning I put into her. And she was fun to play when not faced with dual immunes.
Best find was an Ist rune, found last night in the WSK.

I think it is obvious the judges would have awarded full marks in every category, except for a lack of screenshots. So HanShotFirst should consider himself very lucky not to be sporting an ugly dog 'tar. 😉

Thank you to Liq for designing a tournament which allowed me to make such a fun and overpowered character (which I don't believe was necessarily his intention). Thank you to the various people who traded items to me to make the character properly overpowered, chiefly the skillers. And thank thank you to anyone who has bothered to read the TL;DR section.

I finally decided to mat my javazon after using her as my only MFer for months now. I finished off act 5 with no real problems at P3 or P4. Did once to a fire enchanted Korlic, then went back and Jabbed to lightning immune ancients to death. Worldstone keep was cake, the waves of critters all spawn close together so they died easily. Baal was his regular pansy self, and stingy as always didn't drop me a single unique (or even an elite base item). She'll continue as my MFer now, mainly on mephy with some cows and countess on the side. Pindle seems to hate her, so I don't even bother anymore.

The way of playing.

I like amazons, strong Java-amazons. They are one of the strongest lightning-build in the entire game.
I didin't use any skillers. No luck there with LK and rolling charms.. So when i get some skillers, she will be even more better. Normal was easy to clear out. I helped her out abit with my Candice, from time to time. Act4 hell had many LI's and not even my merc could help her out much. HF in nightmare was nothing to talk about and Hell produced me a Lum, kind of sad. I still need an Ist to get my Lo. Baal was not so hard to finnish even if Candice helped me during the baalrun, she could handle the queen just fine and became the Matriarch after all! She is really fun to clear out pindle and he's friends. Also cowruns is just a breeze to handle. Not much mf on her, but if i ever get my hand on a griffon, she will be more fun to rule the game with.

Next project could be a male maybe. :coffee:

Ghost spear has one big advantage aswell in the speed,as mentioned before it only needs 60% ias for 5fpa fend so no need for treachery:smiley: that meant i could use fortitude, which coupled with ~80% DS and the big stick resulted in one hurty zon.👍

There was still one big problem with this char though - The survivability.With no shield and no DAE skills she couldnt take much hits.Therefore i went with heavy leach gear-26% in the end.That still wasnt for some bosspacks,mainly for frenzytaurs and OK minions.

Game progress:Normal and NM was MP'ed with San's beserker,a few deaths due to lazyness but it was ez mostly.Hell was a different kind of story.Act 1 lvled in pits for lvl 83 (andys ugly helm) and died many times in this act,lost count after 10 deaths :undecided: .Act 2 was a lot easier then i expected-i was expecting to get pwnt by the undeads but with heavy use of slow missles and decoy i went through the act with no deaths:cool: Act 3 was easy aswell,only one death in the durance of hate lvl 2 by might doll and cursed Mauler pack.Act 4-This was where things started to get alot slower, because of the huge life the monsters have in this act.I got away with 3 deaths in total-one to gloams,2nd to a nasty venom lord boss pack and third to Lord the seis minions-that was surprising as i got The Seis down very fast,but the merc fell really fast for the minions and soon did i as well.
Act 5 had a nasty start as undead archers in the bloody foothills,but again with heavy use of slow missles and decoy got through it untouched.Crystalline passage welcomed me with extra fast cursed PI frenzy taurs-couldnt even push savenexit before deeds.Frozen river was nasty aswell,gloams and lancers and had to reroll it once,after that it went pretty ez,p8 ancients was a piece of cake after i got a roll with no cursed just had to use all my mana pots because madawc spawned mana burn.Throne had some gloams again coupled with invaders and ressurectors but it was doable.All baals minions except lister went down pretty fast and almost with no problems, but lister spawned with might LE so i ran as fast as i could off the throne,when i got back to my surprise they were all seperated so i could take em down 1-2 at time.Baal was really easy even on p8 and didnt drop anything worth mentioning.

Comments
On paper, Fate's gear looks pretty good for a mostly untwinked character. The only item she twinked on was a Wall of the Eyeless which she stole from lionheartthebrave. To be honest, however, more than half of her gear was exchanged only prior to fighting Hell Ancients. She was a little bit lazy about fixing her gear throughout the course of Nightmare and the majority of Hell, and this little lapse in judgment left her with resistances like these, not to mention no CBF.

Normal was normal. The going was slow until she managed to pop some Tir runes into a Kite Shield to empower her Charged Strike. Not surprisingly, none of the bosses really gave her much trouble. By Nightmare, she was spamming Lightning Fury with the help of the aforementioned shield. She went without 'Insight' for the majority of the act, but hardly noticed the difference. Then again, she was packing something along the lines of 19% ML, and was using a Cruel Throwing Spear. *whistle*

Hell was, of course, hell. The mercenary was dropping left and right, even in Act 1. In retrospect, equipping him with Tal Rasha's Horadric Crest prior to fighting Baal might have been a good idea, but hey. We all make mistakes. :D. Despite this, Act 1 still went pretty smoothly. With her resists being what they were, however, Fate had some *minor* trouble getting through Acts 2 through 4. Scarabs? :X. Council Members? Parked. Venom Lords? *flee* Souls? 1 hit KO! Practicing dodging in DotA has some advantages after all. Act 5 was the real killer though, as a lot of the bosspacks featured inherent cold damage. Once I got Fate some CBF and decent resistances, however, it really wasn't a problem. Go figure.

The javelins weren't really a problem. For most of the game, she used three stacks with a lot of %ED to go with her mana leech. Her current spears were shopped from Malah, I believe, and are really good at applying some pain. :D. They'll hopefully be replaced by Titan's Revenge eventually. Her stat points are kind of messed up though. I planned her for Titan's Revenge, Harlequin Crest, and Stormshield or 'Spirit', but didn't really consider Thundergod's Vigor or even War Traveler as far as items with bonus strength are concerned. *shrug* She really needs to increase her Pierce though, so Razortail will probably be better anyway.

Deaths? No more than 10. :p. One came from a random Scarab in the Maggot Lair, and the rest were a result of running around stupidly trying to find the exit in a predominantly Lightning Immune area. Incidentally, I don't believe Iron Maiden was ever cast on Fate's mercenary, despite her complete lack of special tactics against it. *shrug*

Finds? Vex rune was nice. She got a Pul from NM Forge, and an Io from Hell Forge. A couple of Lum runes dropped along the way as well. In terms of S/Us, there wasn't much. She got Head Hunter's Glory from Hell Eldritch, and Andariel's Visage from Hell Pindle. Not much else of note except a nifty Camphor (12%) Jewel of Fervor, a 43 resist all Sacred Targe, a Monk's Tiara of Life Everlasting (23 PDR), and all of her currently equipped items.

Future Plans
1) Fate is *probably* going to end up being my Baal runner, at least for the Baalthon, though her trip through the Frenzytaur infested WSK and Soul infested Throne really have me pointing in some other direction.

2) I have two level 14 LS/DS/FB trappers sitting at the Outer Cloister waypoint. One has max energy, probably as a result of wanting to speed up an MP game, and the other has max vitality. Don't really feel liking playing something with lightning damage next though. :D.

Kind of wrote this in a hurry (still took about 25 minutes), so I'm hoping there aren't any glaring mistakes or omissions, though there's not much to say about this kind of character anyway. Comments
1) With neither a Valkyrie nor a tanking mercenary, not to mention a squishy Decoy, Alicia had to be built to slaughter as quickly as possible. Her heavily synergized level 35 lightning abilities, and modest amount of -%ELR, got the job done for the most part, "despite" not having 'Infinity', although I'd be lying to you if I told you she didn't want Fanaticism Listers dying a tad bit quicker.

2) Killing non-LIs is simple enough, but it's the immunes that give you trouble, of course. With her mercenary not packing the greatest of punches, Alicia has to do most of the dirty work herself. She doesn't lug around her strange looking gear for no reason. With her potent set of javelins, damage/AR-oriented stat point allocation, 'Fortitude', and Highlord's Wrath, among other things, she packs quite a decent punch against most LIs, including those in the waves. (Granted, she hasn't fought an LI Lister...)

3) As far as her defenses, she has max block and generally decent resistances, but also a minimal investment in Dodge. I had read about somebody trying this (Ugla?), and figured to give it a go myself. Not having Avoid or Evade kept Lightning Fury rolling smoothly, and having Dodge occasionally proved useful while using Charged Strike or Jab. She also has Thundergod's Vigor in inventory, for usage in getting to the waves themselves. Particularly handy, as she has to get up close and personal to Jab away at LI Scarabs and Souls.

4) The last thing you might notice is that she carries around a Kelpie Snare on switch. Stop giving me those looks. :crazyeyes: As you might have guessed, she uses this for Baal himself. With her respectable AR, it virtually never takes Alicia more than half a second to slow the demon, and the effect lasts more than long enough for her to swap back to her javelin, and down her quelled foe. She also employs the tactic against nastier foes, such as LI bosses from the /p8 waves, and it's worked wonderfully thus far.

Concerns
1) Her 'Faith' mercenary dies from time to time, occasionally to Lister, but usually to an onslaught of elemental damage (Souls or Hydras). I've considered playing around with her gear, as she's only got around 60 FR, but still haven't completely figured out how exactly to pull it off.

2) She's got 600 life. All the preparations and tactics are well and good, but just one unfortunate bosspack, and/or stroke of poor luck, will have her dead in a flash. For this, I've considered 'Call to Arms' in the cube, but it probably won't add very much, considering she's got so little multipliable life.

3) Her plain ol' Gemmed Monarch is ugly to look at. :p On a slightly more serious note, I'm not sure where to toss her future skill points. Some points in Critical Strike would probably help the most, boosting her Jab damage, but the desire for more lightning damage, relatively meaningless or otherwise, is always quite tempting...

Closing Thoughts
A highly unoriginal build, with noticeably broken gear. The first time I've gone without Valkyrie though, and I must say the lack of D/A/E (well, A/E) really cleans things up quite nicely. Not having a Valkyrie wasn't too bad, although sometimes it certainly wouldn't have hurt to have had one...

As always, thanks to anyone bothering to read through this cookie cutter, as well as anyone who can give input on any of my concerns, and those who helped me piece together the gear.

Ramblings
1) This was by far the most time consuming Matriarch/Patriarch EVER.

2) Decoy is awesome. Plain and simple. It made everything possible.

3) A cold Iron Wolf is equally awesome. Combined with a decoy, it gives you quite a respectable amount of crowd control.

4) Battles were simple. Check for piercing ranged (ie. Souls/etc.) See some? RUN LIKE HECK. Nothing? Check for ordinary ranged. Lure any melee units away with a Decoy, and cast Slow Missiles on the ranged. Recast decoy next to any ranged units, blocking their line of fire. Play leapfrog, killing one ranged unit, recasting decoy, and repeating. Only melee units remaining? Lure them to a small doorway/stairway/opening/bridge/etc., cast decoy, let your mercenary freeze them, and pick them off one at a time.

5) Evading and countering is a decent strategy. Bait something into attacking you, dodge, and strike. It was quite serviceable against unfreezable monsters.

6) It takes about a full second for Impale to land. This is slow. Speaking the obvious for 200, please. This lack of speed, however, facilitated even bigger problems. Iron Maiden was one of them. Imagine getting Iron Maiden'd halfway through the slow Impale animation. Combine that with Impale's ridiculous damage, and you get death!

7) Stuff breaks. Quickly. How quickly? In a nine level span, I broke more than my fair share of spears. Seriously. In total, 83 spears were destroyed in the making of this Matriarch. Even a Hone Sundan would break, self-repair modifier and all. Nagi always carried two at a time until Steel Pillar became available.

8) Yes, the gear sucks. Get over it. Yes, I could easily have done better. Would it have mattered? Probably not. Hellmouth?!? Eyecandy, my friend.

Well, after two "signs" from d2 gods, I decided to make javazon. Those signs were eth titans and nice crafted java gloves. I started her, played to lvl6, forgot her for a week or two, then played through the game in 3 days. Quite fast to play, if you don't care clearing the whole game.

Well, I really suffered because of mana. 7% mana leech from Vampire Gaze didn't seem to be enough and I had to drink more mana bottles than my other pat's/mat's had together! I guess it was like 10 thrown LF and my mana pool was empty. Though, I didn't bother to do anything to fix it 😁
