(kind of) OT - Unreadable CD keys

(kind of) OT - Unreadable CD keys

I used to enjoy Neverwinter Nights thoroughly, but uninstalled it when I was switching computers and never got to reinstall it. When I finally felt like playing again, I noticed my CD was terribly scratched. And yes, I was unable to install the game again.

Luck has struck me though: I just purchased the Gold Edition (NwN + expansion). It costs me a bit more than just the expansion, but at least it beats buying just the original NwN again. I had waited for quite a while to be able to play again, so I didn't really care about those few extra bucks. I began to install it again and was quite excited about it, until the thing asked for my CD key.

I swear, they need to strangle the guy or gal who came up with the font that blasted CD-key is written in. Preferably with barbed wire. And slowly. You see, I seem to have quite a few 0's, O's and D's in that key. Or maybe it's just quite a few O's. Or a few D's. Or just one D with a few 0's and a few O's. There is no friggin' way I can tell, and having spent about one hour and a half trying all sorts of combinations, I swear, you are ready to throw the damn thing out of the window when you see the next "This is not a valid cd-key".

Anyone ever had a similar experience?

PS: And no, I still haven't installed it.

(darn, can't edit anymore)

Okay, I have some good news, and some bad news. The good news is that I probably will be playing NwN in a while. The bad news is that it will give me a lot of headache.

After trying all possible combinations of 0's, O's and D's and getting slightly agitated because it still wouldn't work, I noticed that the "r" on "sticker" (which is written on the cd-key sticker in exactly the same font) resembles just like an "a". There aren't too many A's and/or R's in the cd-key, luckily, but I would have to use those combinations together with the combinations of, yes you guessed, 0's, O's and frigging flaming D's.

Excuse me while I go search for a decent wall to bump my head against. But hey, I will be playing the game again.

Hmm.. that's odd because when I purchased both NWN Gold & HotU the CD key was just printed inside of the instruction booklet..

Oh and don't forget to pick up HotU if you don't already have it, otherwise SoU is going to seem VERY short & lackluster. :P

Yeah, I was going to pick it up already next time I'll go shopping, but thanks for the advice nevertheless. By the way, I live in Europe so I have the UK version of the game, that might be the reason why the cd-key is printed on a sticker on the inside of the case. Which is in fact quite stupid, since the shop I got it from hadn't got a plastic wrapper around the case - people could just go look for a free cd-key there.

By the way, after a bit of searching combined with hair pulling and groaning, I finally managed to install it. It was a moment of glory when I witnessed the install bar instead of another "invalid key"-window. Of course, I immediately wrote down the cd-key I used on the sticker. So all's well now, and that game still rocks.

You know what worse? A CD-key, fully readable, but it's invalid, while you just bought it at the store. :grrr: x 100.

Worse indeed. Can't you return it?

You should be able to contact their tech support. They would probably issue you a new key provided that you provided you show a receipt.

I don't remember where I left that... so I really am screwed. I'll go find a cd-key generator, so I can screw others by using theirs

Argh, so there is probably no refund available either. Try to contact Tech Support nevertheless, you'll never know how they are going to react.
