Kind of funny obesrvation from the D3 Subs

There's atleast one thread talking about what people are going to name characters in d3, maybe more.

Point is, why would someone post a name thaey intend to use as a character name in public?

Think of it this way.

You post a name you want to use and within minutes of that post x number of people see it. Now your chances of have having that name be "unavailable" or "already in use" when you actually create that character go way up because by the time D3 does come out... thousands or more people will have seen it, and someone's likely to decide that they like that name and try to get it asap.

Because people want others to see what awesome names they can come up with. I'm sure by the time D3 comes out they'll have completely forgotten the names they came up with and use something like "pimpdaddythebarb"

Gorny, you assume that in D3 servers character names will have to be unique as in D2. IMHO it's pretty silly feature of D2 Bnet and I don't see a reason why it has to be the same in D3

Yeah but only accounts really need to be unique. Would not really hurt to have same names, and if they are in the same game just append the account like:

account.name

I fully expect D3 to not have the ridiculous restriction of having a unique name for each character. Within just a few days after D3 comes out there are going to be millions, probably 10's of millions of characters on each realm. With a unique name system you will have to get your cat to sit on your keyboard in order to find an unused name. Who really wants to be forced to use the name 'awegftiejwrk' or 'xXxFishSaucexXx' when they could use 'Fish Sauce on my Dumplings'.

@crawlingdeadman: I suggest we forge a strategic alliance with the D1 forum in order to reign supreme over the D3 horde.

I think D3 should just use the same system as Steam: when there happens to be two players in the same game with the same name, the second one to join receives a (1) at the end of the name. Example: A character named "Hercules" is in the game. Another "Hercules" enters, and automatically receives the name "Hercules(1)". Any subsequent "Hercules" to enter would receive a (2), (3), etc.
