found vex before in cows...and lots of ists in cows back in the .09 days from the chests...best way to find runes : kill lots and LOTS and LOTS of monsters in hell 
How many have actually found high runes, vex,ohm,sur etc i

thats it... never anything higher then mal aside from hellforge.
this ladder however, every single one of my 20+ forges (counting nm and hell).... nothing higher then pul.

Unless you cubed a zod. Then bra-fricking-vo to you ^^I think the highest I found was an IST, but I think I'm wrong. I have NEVER found a rune that the hellforge can't drop. If you want to find runes, then make a javazon and clear hell cows, but only equip full killing gear so you can kill as fast as you can since mf does not affect runes.

I found a Vex in the Pits last ladder season. Then I cubed myself up to another Vex and made the chaos runeword. In the same timespan I got tired of d2 and went inactive, just a week(or two?) prior to the reset I got back to the game. I did find an Ist in the beginning of last season too, in the pits as well. 
And if I should count the SOJ's... 5. 3 of them came before 1.10 and 2 after. I haven't found one yet this season...

Let's see... Not counting hellforge, I've never found Ist... but I HAVE found a Mal, and two or three Ums off of hell cows.
I've also found : Vex (countess), Ohm (Chaos sanc), and Sur (Also chaos sanc)

Hc ladder2 selffound runes: Ohm from fallen boss act1 hell blood marsh,2 guls in pitrun and LO- rune in pit run.
Hc ladder 3: nothing.

i played sp until 1.10 when i switched to ladder...in sp i never found anything worth [highlight]****[/highlight]. on the ladder ive found 7 SoJs, 3 Vexs, many Ists and 2 Guls. the countess has dropped many ums for me as well. its all in the number of games you play

In the one year I have been playing, I have gotten a Mal as my highest DROPPED rune, an Ist as my highest Forge rune, and I got an Ohm in Nl a couple of weeks ago for helping a new guy on the ladder get a Hellforge Hammer for his starter guy. He was Nl-rich. But I have never found a Hr off an enemy before... On ladder, I have gotten 3 Ios, and I upped them to a Lum, which is my highest rune after 100 Countess runs.
As you all know, I got a SoJ about a week ago, which is my first. The unique jewelry I haven't gotten is a Saracen's, Atma's, Mara's, Seraph's, Highlords, Eye of Elitch, Metalgrid, BK ring, Carrion Wind, Nature's Peace, and Wisp Projector. Pretty long list, and it doesn't look like it's gonna get shorter any time soon...

Cham is the second highest rune, so that's allways useful. For example you could always trade ir for a rune u do need/want. But as to the luck thing: you prolly experienced it yourself too. Some days you run for hours (mf-runs that is
) and don't find anything mentionable. Sometimes not even 1 elite unique/better exceptional/'rare' set item. And the other day you start doing runs and from the 5th run on or so, there drops a nice item every couple of runs. (or what I consider to be nice)However the game and everything in it isn't random but mathematical and statistical I do believe in luck.
Then again there's another idea that's on my mind.

Say you have a 1% chance to get an item, ppl tend to think that when you do 100 runs, you would have the desired item by the end of those 100 runs.
But you could also do 198 runs and get nothing and then get the 2 items on run 199 and run 200. After all, that's still a 1% chance.
It could well be you are sick and tired of running and give up at run 150-160 and never get the item.
Then again you could actually find the item on your first run, and then find nothing on the next 99 runs.
So sometimes I think I'm the first player, and consider someone who says on the forum 'omg!!11 found xxxxx' to be the second 'type' of player.
I might do many runs and find nothing (to eventually find many on a row, but never get there cuz I don't play that much) and a player who only plays 2 hours a week, might find the item on his first run(s) and might not know how lucky he was, cuz to him the same mathematical odds seem different.
So you see, luck is a BIG factor in this game imHo.
