Meet my latest toon , this one was a Guardian , a 1st for me

This project started as one of my goals in 2020 My motivation was 15 years playing and still no Guardian. Ithena was the first HC toon I had got through A1 normal, all for motivation reasons. She was also my 1st Assassin to reach Mat/Guardian. Much of this play was during 2020. I took a break from D2 for a while during 2020 so picked up the project recently and completed her during the current Covid lockdown.
The build itself was standard Trapsin splitting between Lightning and Fire with a decent Shadow and Merc. While is true I am an Assassin noob, with the good guides and info in the SPF I learnt about HC play and build. Just reading about posts and thread , seeking it out and learning helped a lot. The character was an untwinked extended stash version. I had never played HC before so it is another restart, I must be close to double figures. It took me a while to get through normal and level up where I could finish NM and have enough damage to do lots of Pit runs and some Countess runs to get 2 Lems.

Gameplay

Game play was combo Death Sentry with the right traps for the monsters either LS or FBlast sometimes all three at once. This was comboed with CoS and MB for defensive or LR for more damage. IMO, for untwinked, the LR wand is the most powerful switch for this build but the loss of control of the battle had to be managed. I used Fade as my main aura, BoS for town to when backtracking through a cleared area. I favoured FRW, FHR, res and mana charms over life charms to make the character more playable. The Assassin life is decent without a lots of life charms. I found some nice mana life and resists and life charms which are a bonus. I had no CNBF on main weapon which meant I needed extra caution . Those CNBF items just would not drop so I eventually just pushed on. I used the dual claws to use 47% Weapon Block and for the style points. For the stats I stated enough to greater talons on the original plan was to shop some claws and if those nice claws dropped
The merc was a prayer merc with Insight to maximise my survivability. I started every new battle with no amp, full and DR which massively contributed to survivability. The 40 life regen per 2 seconds meant i just needed the occasional rejuvie and mana pot. Also the endless mana allows me to spam scout traps the alert me to monsters. This running play is similar to my Amazon and Necro play when running. I use the decoy for the Zon and Clay golem for the Necro. This tactic allows me to save the CoS for crucial encounters.
I have a panic button skill for most characters and for this character that was Mind Blast. The panic button is always in the same key mapping whatever character I am is playing and the
I finished with A1 and A2 on p3 and A3 to 5 on p1

Close Calls there were a few but too to mention!
There were some close calls,
Hell Ventar was Fana and smashed the merc quickly because I used LR instead of CoS. I should have MB a few Lords first. The 2 SM casting tanked ok until Ventar bit it thenthe rest of the pack were tidied up.
Lister and pack killed the Merc again and pushed me back outside the Throne room. But their life was whittled away and they bit it too.
I was forced to abort one Pit run when a cursed MS Fana Archer pack where close of the entrance to Pits lvl 1. After 2 Merc res and 4 SM casts and 2 CoS and a couple of hits to me with a Full Rejuvie I went up the stair case and aborted.
ToD had a Snakes and Assailants (Invader) stair trap. Luckily not a nasty boss pack so they were despatced
But no true S&E or death moments

The Ancients - what was all the fuss about?
The Ancients fight was straight forward. The whirler had conviction, the Leaper Teleport and FE, the thrower had MR and was LI and CI, not was not CE because there was no frost nova when he bit it. They did not trouble the Sin. I used only 1 Full Rejuvie on the Merc and did not need to recast the SM. Whirler died first after I used LR on him with stacked LS. The Leaper followed shortly after. He managed to Tele and then tried a Leap Attack. I repositioned the Sin and LS and LR finished him also. The thrower was more resistant but eventually died to FBlast spam and being jabbed with the Merc's Insight. the fight last about one minute, mostly because of the MR double thrower


Apart of general item finding I tried some craft recipes

I rolled a caster belt and ammy, 2 blood rings, 1 blood gloves, 3 caster gloves, 1 caster belt and imbued a diadem. The caster ammy was gambled at 88 hoping for a 92 give me a chance at a Lvl 90 +2 miracle . The first blood ring the standout, the ammy useful +1 Sin skills but not as good as the +1/16pdr ammy. The other items are was useful but not as good as what I already had . The Diadem was so close +1 Sin, teleport charges (the readout in the full item dump) In the end I did not use it because I wanted max LR and did not want to spend the socket quest on it

Final Thoughts
The HC experience was exciting and I needed to keep alert for it. There was no late night playing , well past 11pm. I just wanted to complete this project badly and with a level above 86. Originally, my original final target was 91. I did not quite get there abut ticketed off the 2020 goal. I can set another goal for 2022
In future she could become effective D-key runner in D2 R or Baal runner in the near future if I continue with HC play. With my playstyle and time of play I prefer SC because of the heavily twinked characters and fatigue. It is better to chill out with a few runs and if my toon dies then I just collect the corpse. I just prefer not to lose godly items like Enigma and Infinity and then need to spend hours to find these again because I am tired and do a stupid error.

I do understand so much this fear of HC when twinking... HC is made for untwinked journeys in my mind, but well, at some point....why not spend the wealth? ;-)

@Babyhell, I think this is a good long term goal. I add it into the 2022 perhaps for a 22/23 completion.

The eth rare myrmidon greaves I found, are they worth a serious skull reroll session to try to get self repair eths and some other good mods. It looks like the stats say eth greaves have the same kick damage as non eth version in ATMA anyway.

Iirc the skull recipe makes the ilvl of the item - defining possible affixes/available mods - lower each roll...I'll have to check to confirm that tho.

In my memories only diadems are worth rerolling as they can get any affix whichever the ilvl is.

6 Perfect Skulls + 1 Rare Item –> 1 Random Low Quality Rare Item of the same type

  • ilvl = int(.4 * clvl) + int(.4 * ilvl)
    • This recipe rerolls the rare item, resetting all the modifiers. The item level is lowered, but can still be fairly high, if the item and the character rolling it are high level. (Level 80 character and level 80 item would turn into 32 + 32 = ilvl 64.)

Congrats!! Guardians are always an achievement!

BTW, those rare boots will no longer be eth once rerolled. Found that out thinking I could reroll rare eth Crystals Swords in the cube.

That is useful information about the etherealness of items in the rare reroll.

Basically the boots have 13 durability which if used on a K/T sin , I expect would wear out quickly. If a long term goal is to convert her into a K/T build, would these boots be useful for her.? eg a personalise and reroll

This got me thinking about more about

1. Is kick damage increased by item etherealness?
2. If the item was rerolled to a minimum ilvl with Ithena, what would be the affix level of the mods on the rerolled item
3. Then what are the possible affixes that can roll on these to make it useful


After several hours of reading guides and research using search thanks @maxicek and @uzziah I found that for this scenario

1. Kick damage does not seem to be affected by item etherealness. Several sources seem to say this. Only def and str requirements are both affected of which to me are not deal breakers. I would be interested to hear if anyone as actually tested this in game.

2. This seems to be
a. for the math boffins, the 6 skull reroll done repeatedly approaches 2/3 of the character level . So for Ithena the ilvl will bottom out 58 for an lvl 8 8 character. I manually calculated this by calculating the 6 skull formula on calculator enough times for it to not change the ilvl

b.
then I ran the alvl calculator that reminded me that qlvl 85 items without a magic level will always spawn with at least up to affix lvl 71 . That comfortability covers any desired affixes on these boots.

The qlvl and magic level I took off the Arreat Summit for simplicity

From Uzziah's guide for Generating Items in game

@Babyhell , your diadem observation calculates the diadem as up to affix lvl 103 (qlvl 85 + magic level 18) no matter what the items actual ilvl is. I think that gets rounded down to alvl 99 further along the calculation. Again the qlvl and magic level were taken from the Arreat Summit for simplicity

3. My desired mods are FRW, with FHR or stats, then single high useful resist and -stat mods. Unfortunately the - stat mods suffix is not possible on boots, only weapons, body armour and shields. So there is no way to reduce the str requirment of rerolled boots. All of the other affixes were available

So the option to reroll the boots will allow me to at least use these but this may be a long term goal. I don't have the resources to do this in HC currently

Thanks . It is a great ring and it is hard to complain . Just wished it rolled with another useful affix instead of useless fire damage . Some AR, dex or MF ,even a small amount, would have been nice and wold have capped it off. I will definitely use as it is hard to beat for any weapon using character.

Yes thanks. It is a long term goal to at least complete another . I suspect a twinked Guardian will follow this one at some stage. But not same level of gear that my SC characters have.
