Green with Envy II Tournament

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

Travincal started off quite tough, with a Heirophant boss, a 4-pack of Champions and three regular Heirophants, all of these pretty much within sight of each other! Good thing I had enough space to lure back the Zealots to, and that I have a way to knock back enemies. I went to town twice to boost the cold resist with potions.

Council and Durance levels 1-2 were uneventful, but Dolls kept me awake. I made sure to stand well away from all explosions.

Bremm had his "old school" aura, Blessed Aim, so that was not a threat. His random ability was worse, though. Hooray for Blade Fury.
(Note the Fade on the Shadow. I love the "stick shift" aspect of this summon.)

I boosted resists with both Thawing potions and Antidotes for the Mephisto fight. My high life and Mephisto´s preference to attack the Shadow made the fight comfortably safe.

I found Doomslinger in the Durance and Meph dropped Bonesnap, but no more greens in the act.

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

Did you know that on the first kill (which is all us single-pass players will ever experience), act bosses are forced to roll rare or better for all weapons, armor and jewelry? So this a failed set Spear.
Oh yeah, the double-durability displeasure. In which case, Diablo also dropped a failed green brandistock, and failed green demonhide gloves...

I just spotted this thread, so I thought I would take a break from my Midas character to try this one. Random character and skill tab gave me a lightning sorc, so I have started my chargedboltress Sinead. I look forward to finding some greens.

EDIT: Just read the post about this tournament being closed. Hopefully I can catch it next time.

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

Venus was finally granted enough time to finish up Act I. It was pretty smooth. The Jail was full of Death Clan and Dark Ones, so Venus had quite a bit of fun teleporting into and out of the cages to attack with almost no danger. However she had one NDE when rounding a corner and getting pummeled by a Champion Bone Archer pack. Fortunately she has quite a big stockpile of rejuv potions. She’s been using teleport-in-place a lot, to pull the merc in front of her and take ranged attacks like these. Perhaps as a result she has been blowing a lot of gold on merc resurrections, instead of gambling for set amulets. She did find a skiller, but unfortunately it was +1 to Traps. Her Imbue went to a bone wand for a quick 35K.

Andariel was treated to a game of “ring around the fire lakeâ€, while juggling orbs. (I know fire would have been more effective, but I didn’t want Venus to stand still long enough to aim.) She dropped a very pathetic offering: 3 gems and 2 blues (failed sets, perhaps?).

The act did net Venus two new greens, Sigon’s Gage on the Tamoe Highland and Vidala’s Barb in the Catacombs. Both bring her to within one item of complete sets, but neither are worth it IMO. She had much more interesting unique drops: Djinn Slayer, Bladebuckle, Frostburn, Radamant’s Sphere, and the Crown of Thieves. (Now if only the latter had dropped for my Descendant of Midas!),

This week the firewall at my work started blocking diii.net, so I’ll probably be posting even less than usual from now on. :weep: Venus will still be progressing, though, until I announce her victory or death. Good luck, guys!

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

Wow, finally a character who does not mind spawners! They all died quickly in thick flames. But I am getting ahead of myself.

Like Pepper, Allisandrina fought Doom Knights who are immune to her main element. However, I have done one thing a little differently than what I´ve done with all my earlier Phoenix Strikers (that I´ve gotten killed in tournaments:whistling:): invested a little more in CoT than in FoF. My reasoning is that the Meteor attack is strong as it is, it´s the lightning storm that needs boosting more.

So my lightning attack is pretty good, which I appreciated against those stubborn knights. My meager AR and their high blocking makes it hard to release the lightning attack as often as I would like. Especially if there are flames around (from the Shadow, or from me if I have screwed up) so I have trouble seeing how many charges I have scored. I can sometimes hear the hits, but I can mistake the Shadows´hits for mine. The fighting situations were often relaxed, though (freezing from merc, and shadow tanking), so it happened quite often that I moved out of the flames to see how many charges I had, then back in.

Venom Lords are not bothered by a few flames. Solution: fry them in a LOT of flames! Or use the lightning attack.

Plains of Despair was kind to me, item wise. First a green jewel. They are always exciting to identify. Yes, this one was a winner!

Then an 'inevitable' set item dropped: Isenhart´s Lightbrand. That means I now have the complete set. Allisandrina tried it out. Hmm, not bad. Not bad at all. Decent attack speed and AR, 10% more resist all and WOW, +30% blocking! That means the shield is at 71%, but when the partial +10 DEX is there, effective blocking is at 75%. This is a good setup vs. enemies I need to stand close to for a long time to damage them, like act bosses.

For general playing, I am still going with my 30% MF Tancred´s Crowbill/Mil´s Orb setup, though. The really low damage on this weapon made me able to ignore Iron Maiden. Another thing that made the CS quite easy is that OB Knights can be frozen in Nightmare.

I have probably shown similar screenies before, but I really do enjoy the fireworks that comes with this build.

I switched to full Isenhart´s setup vs. /p3 Diablo. I slipped up early and Narphet got killed. I was about to take a TP but decided to fight on. The Shadow held up surprisingly well (it helped that most Lighting Infernos started too far away from her), Diablo alternated his attacks between me and the Shadow(s) and I could shower the big lizard in nice thick flames. Lots of ducking in and out of the fight, jabbing and dancing going on (you should see the foot speed I have with Vidala´s boots, Isenhart´s full set bonus and Burst of Speed!)
I had put some replacement potions in inventory, and I needed most of those, but as you can see, there were enough for the whole fight, and some to spare. What a confidence boost to kill him in one visit!

I forgot to switch to the MF setup before he died. I can´t help wondering if that made me miss out on Sander´s boots...

Tal Rasha´s Horadric Crest, eh? That is a really nice helm. But isn´t the level requirement ridiculously high?
*looks at the helm*
*looks at the character screen*

The leech is not useful right now, but who knows what weapons I end up with later? The Isenhart´s setup still beats this mask for resists, but only with 3%-units, and that +60 life sure is yummy. I have decided to wear Tal´s mask for general play. Since I broke up the full set on the weapon switch, I may as well take Cleglaw´s Tooth back from Narphet (Cleglaw´s partial set bonuses and the sword itself has a big boost to AR) and give him Isenhart´s Lightbrand for some more resists.

Pepper has recently found 2 perfect GCs of Greed (and one with "only" 39%) :p

Perhaps, but then again you might have upgraded to Blackhorn's as well. So maybe it was better to forget about the MF? Nice green jewel btw!

Pepper also has donned Tal's Mask. It looks much better with her shiny Sigon's armor, compared to the Cap.

Ooh, that is a sweet jewel! And right before Act IV and the socket quest, too. Now the big question: what do you think you will use it in?

It feels like Tal's mask ought to be better then Isenhart's Horns, especially since you are likely to find something to replace at least one of the other items in the set and Isenhart's Finery isn't very interesting without the full set bonus. [Apparently green Death Masks are common; I hope Venus finds one too!]

Whatever item that is most likely to be used in Hell difficulty. Tal´s mask is a likely candidate, but I´ll wait until the act is over to decide.

Nicely done getting through Act I Hell.
Looks like there might be three women competing with that Necomancer in Kurast for the tourney title.

(btw, that was quite a number of interesting uniques. And I don´t even know what Radament´s Sphere is...)

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

All outdoor areas in the beginning of the act were quite easy. I just had to be careful with Slingers. They were in all three big areas. The Foothills version were the nastiest, because they have inherent cold damage.

Both Pit of Acheron and Infernal Pit had the "tricky" type of succubus (who are also cold immune). The best way to handle them was to unsummon the Shadow, then lure in 1-2 of them, cast CoS (so they would stay put and could not shoot their nasty missiles) and bombard it/them with 2-3 Meteors. A Champ pack was tough (I can´t easily control their moment), especially since it was accompanied by several fire immune Salamanders.

Near-disaster in the beginning of Crystalline Passage! I had just started the session. We were met by a 4-pack of Champion rogue archers, plus a bossback with some sort of Multishot boss. And they all do cold damage (often firing Freezing Arrows) and none in my party has CBF. Yuck! Very scary, but frantic Shadow resummoning, CoS and happy feet (and several potions) at least made it possible to fight a little. But they were too much for us, Naphet got killed and I fled further inside. Found a calm spot and opened my inventory to cast a TP.

I HAD NO TOME!

I had severe storage problems last session. I found many '>30k items', so I had sold my TP Tome to make more room. This session, I was so eager to play that I forgot to buy a new one. Crap! I now had two options:
1. Fight on without a merc, with a more than half-empty belt, against archers and two unknown monster types, until I find a scroll of TP.
2. Run back to the Arreat Plateau WP.

I chose the latter. The Shadow took the Multishot arrows and Alli made it back to the AP with only minor scratches. She had to try 3 times with Dragon Flight to get past a door on the last defense line (too many monsters around to take the time to burn down the door!). I made it there.

On my second try, I stormed past the archer party and opened up a TP in the calm spot, and we were in back in business. Phew!

Two green finds, and one was very nice: Sigon´s Wrap, my first piece of the set. Fire resist is more important than cold (which can be boosted with potions) and 4 more potion slots is great. Much better partial set bonus potential, too.

Then, in the last place I looked, the golden chest in Infernal Pit, I found Death´s Hand. In this tourney, if a golden chest drops very few items, it´s exciting to hit Alt.

Well i thought baal would be the end...but it seems it wasn't to be.

Today Fice was slain in the foothills after i foolishly teleported ahead of a group of monsters and got surrounded and so overwhelmed that she couldn't recover from the attacks to teleport.

Picked up Cathans staff before fighting diablo who fell pretty easy to the devestating effects of lvl 21 metoer.

Ouch! R.I.P. Fice.
What evil force possessed you to make such a move?

Set items: 17 x 3 = 51

How do you equip 17 set items? As far as I can tell, 16 is the maximum possible.

Yea..that should have went dwn to 15 instead of up because of the staff

So 149 is me total

Good luck to the rest of you!
Should get another one of these up and running again :)

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

Incredible number of monsters in Halls of Anguish, with both Devilkin and melee Flayers (gotta love those spawn packs of 12!). I think I earned at least a million in gold from all the loot here. No green item from the gambling, but I did find Angelic Sickle on this level. One more piece now, and that set is really going to shine. I am gambling only amulets and Ring Mails now.

Halls of Pain was a lot of work with Zealots/Heirophants and maggots. Ugh.

After I had played Ancients´Way, I thought the WP was too far away from the exit to quit, so I pressed on with the rest of the game (forgetting the Icy Cellar in the process - which means I still need to make it a long way from the WP - crap!).

I fought a Stone Skin Madawc, an Extra Strong Korlic and a CE Talic. As I had feared, it was a very tough battle. Narphet died early, but I fought on. Madawc did not last long, but the other two put up a very good fight. Fortunately, I lost Korlic on the other side of the Summit so I could at least fight one at a time. Shadow was completely ignored when I was meleeing an Ancient, so she was only helpful when I needed some short breathers to let healing potions work. The full blocking from Isenhart´s set was important. I needed all the potions I had brought except for one column of purples.
I have no idea how I can possibly win this battle if I make it here in Hell. :p

WSK 1-2 were easy but WSK 3 had a tough start with plenty of Doom Knights. I had to portal park most of that lot and return from the WP. It was still a really tough fight by the stairs and we made a heroic stand there.

Throne level was calm at the start. I played well against snakes, Burning Souls and vampires. The Minions of Destruction took freakin´ages to kill, especially Lister. Their fire resistance must be very high.

Naphet´s cold spells and the slowing from Cleglaw´s gloves were enough to make Baal´s Hoarfrost useless and kept him from teleporting. I needed most of the extra healing- and mana potions I had brought, but killed him without a town visit (on /p3).

Skills:
Phoenix Strike 20
Fists of Fire 8

Shadow Warrior 15

Death Sentry 5

Waypoints 78 * 1 = 78 (I don´t count Hell Rogue Encampment before I´ve done the rest in NM)

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

Congrats on Conqueror!
Perhaps this sin of yours will be a breakthrough for you, although it will be tough. I love those flayer-dense rolls in the Halls. Often the entire screen is filled with items. I have an update for Pepper, but it will have to wait a few days. I'm headed deep into some dense forests, for a few days of hiking.

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

Most of Pepper's notable Act 5 adventures occurred inside the red-portal areas. Very difficult monsters throughout: frenzytaurs, knights, fire salamanders, sirens, undead dolls, and super-poisonous horror archers. Lava-hovering sirens were machine-gunned with Fire Ball. To hell with their drops! Among all that hardship, I found one nice item, a duplicate body armor. This will help prepare Pratham for the start of Hell.

Frozen River was also a problem area, jam-packed with gloams. I regret that I missed an opportunity for an awesome screenshot, which would've been one of my best. An absolute tsunami of lightning, unlike anything I've ever seen, filled half the screen with solid white as Pratham awakened several groups of lurking gloams at the same instant. They quickly scattered and the simultaneous effect was lost. Still, I caught a partial salvo, at the expense of a couple merc rejuvs.

I separated the Ancients with teleport. Korlic didn't last long, requiring only a couple merc healing potions. Talic was trickier to pin down, he doesn't like to stand still under meteors. After a Static barrage, I blanketed the area, which sufficed. Ditto for Extra Fast Korlic. Static has been receiving some attention lately. I want to build up a large effect radius.

Everything comes to an end, eventually. My multi-year streak of not parking a single monster was broken by Lister. He spawned at p8, with very high resistance mods. The merc couldn't tank him for long, even with heavy red potion support. I had forgotten to have Hwanin's belt (PMH) available, which would've worked. I simply couldn't damage him enough to overcome his regen. And I tried my damnedest! First, I trapped him in a couple locations with ledges. However, I could only reach him with indirect flames, not nearly enough to cook him off. I spoiled a golden opportunity to pin him behind 2 huge poppable coffins that spawned next to each other. But they disappeared after I'd opened them and portaled back to town. Finally I tried to stop him at some small pointy rocks, a technique I discovered a while back (and probably the only way you'll ever see an untwinked rogue merc solo a MoD). The problem here was the tricky set-up. It requires a strong character, at close range, to tank briefly. Pepper couldn't handle it. A single hit knocked her senseless, and a 2nd might have been fatal. I tried several times but failed. Lister was parked. :(

Baal was overwhelmed, and dropped yellows and golds. My final green of the Act had been a duplicate Tancred's Crowbill. It seemed unhelpful, but actually it's useful. I'll be questing in Hell with Tancred's Crowbill/ammy and Sigon's shield, plus Mil's shield on the switch. That way I can switch to Mil's for extra MF boss drops. But it only works if I have another Tancred's weapon to activate the amulet MF set-bonus!

Cows were incinerated at p7, providing no greens, but several extra gems. I cubed my whole collection to perfect, and re-rolled GCs. It was an absolute failure. Pepper's entire savings yielded a Tangerine (8) GC as the best result! My final reroll was a Shogukusha skiller. My last bit of NM business was the socket quest. Pepper's green jewels are terrible. Therefore, socketing was an easy choice: a perfect emerald in Pratham's Hwanin's Bill.

Naturally, within the first few minutes of Hell, I found this.

Pepper's Hell stats and fire skills. Notice her low lightning resistance. It was the best I could do. I sacrificed higher quantity fire/cold resistance charms, in order to equip tangerine charms, just to get into the positives a bit. Mana looks a bit low there, but I can add serpent's charms.

Meteor damage: 5237-5569, with additional 600-652 per second. Nice.
Fireball damage : 2453-2557.

Pepper's lightning/cold trees, featuring high-level Static. Spike-shattering for corpse disposal.

Gear: Tal's Mask, Tancred's weapon/amulet, Sigon's armor/shield/belt/boots, Trang's Bracers, Cathan's Ring x 2.
Weapon switch: Tancred's weapon and Mil's shield, socketed with green MF jewel.

Pratham's Hell stats.
Gear: Hwanin's Bill socketed with PEmerald, Berserker's helm, Sigon's armor.

Additional finds:
Cathan's Mask and Armor (a decent combo with the rings, but not better than Pepper's current gear)
(green) Jewel of Fervor
Immortal King's Helm
Ruby (29) GC of Life (9) Sweet!
Serpent's (30) LC
Lucky (6) LC of Life (13). equipped briefly in late NM.
Toothrow
Peasant Crown
Powered Amulet of the Apprentice. :azn:
Vermilion Jewel of Wrath, +22 max damage!

Conqueror Pepper, Fireball/Meteor/Static Sorc, level 75, Act 1 Hell, Cold Plains

Scoring:
Level 75 * -1 = -75
Waypoints 80 * 1 = 80
Quests 55 * 2 = 110
Greens 15 * 3 = 45

Total:160

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

I separated the Ancients with teleport.
This ability makes me envious.

Bring that belt from now on.

Allisandrina has no access to PMH or OW, and her poison duration is only 3 seconds (from a charm). So far, I have not parked anything but there is a risk it might happen.

My last bit of NM business was the socket quest. Pepper's green jewels are terrible. Therefore, socketing was an easy choice: a perfect emerald in Pratham's Hwanin's Bill.

Naturally, within the first few minutes of Hell, I found this.

Of course.

Do you have plans to replace the emerald with this, or do you think the poison is more valuable?

Pepper's Hell stats and fire skills. Notice her low lightning resistance. It was the best I could do.

Those resists are overall far better than what I have been able to accomplish. I have slightly better lightning resist, though.

Meteor damage: 5237-5569, with additional 600-652 per second. Nice.
Oh my, and here I thought my Meteors doing 644-738 damage were powerful!
(no, not really, this charge has always been about the afterflames (that now do 639-669 per second and can be heavily stacked))

Immortal King's Helm

Hmm, do you consider trying a barb merc if you were to find any of the elite set swords?

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

Poison all the way, for a couple reasons:
1. Hwanin's Bill already has 40 IAS. An additional 15 doesn't even reach the next BP. Nor would a Shael, if it was legal.
2. Even if it did, the PEmerald's impressive poison duration is probably more helpful for PMH than a minor speed increase, especially considering the weapon's sub-par damage in Hell, where prolonged monster regen is significant.

What I find amusing is that I go through Norm/NM finding crap green jewels, only to find a plausibly uesful green jewel right at the start of Hell!

Those resists are overall far better than what I have been able to accomplish. I have slightly better lightning resist, though.
I think I was spoiled by my previous green, Striker, who had maxed primary Hell resists with Angelic's set and even a perfect scintillating green jewel!

I was wondering how that was working for you. The flame-stacking does make a noticeable difference for me, and paramount for you.

Hmm, do you consider trying a barb merc if you were to find any of the elite set swords?
Sure. I've found Sazabi's cryptic sword many times, and Bul Kathos' mythical sword once. Anything is possible.

Re: Green with Envy II Tournament

@sequana: Yikes on that Endugu incident! He can´t have been standing this far away at his death, right? Or was it the "extra" death explosion from the little guy?

I just know that I wanted to be as far as possible, but he was still running around there, so most probably he came closer to Filip just in a while when merc + skeletons killed him. I was very close to death after his first death explosion, that's the reason why I don't have screenshot how it looked like, because I immediately drank full rejuv. before army killed that little nasty guy.

Filip, Necromancer, Act III Hell – Durance of Hate II, level 77, points 203

lvl 77..................-77
Qs 71..................142
WPs 105..............105
greens 11............ 33
-----------------------
Total ............... 203

Little progress. Filip in peace proceeded through act III. When he reached Travincal, game started to be more thrilling, those Cantor-type monsters were quite unpleasant with their lightnings. Council member’s were scarying but surprisingly quite well vanquishable - pic_1, pic_2. And then Durance of Hate. Map of DoH 1 was quite well rolled, that helped and in second level Filip just reached WP and parked there. The most dangerous were probably dolls here, but to have sound turned up helped quite a bit, so Filip could always find good far position while army was doing its job.

Next: Meph ... and I'm really scared from this point

One question: Let's imagine that Meph will kill whole my army and I stay alone with my poor merc. In such situation could I re-run little part just for re-building skeletons? (without picking up items of course)

EDIT: And can I for example return to previous act where are also some untouched areas?

I already know Morathi's answer...you can not rerun any areas. What you can do however is leave certain areas untouched and go back to these in order to resurrect monsters. Maybe it would be best to leave a majority of the durance level 2 unscouted in plans of the fight with mephisto.

And of course the same can be done for diablo.

That is correct bladejj.

There is no re-running of any kind in this tournament, as i stated in the rules on the first page. If you are having trouble with skeleton summoning, then i suggest you take bladejj's advice on leaving certain areas untouched with corpses.

PS. Great work to all the remaining contestants....keep it up .
